The fitted bodice, meticulously hand-embroidered with vertical black sequins, sculpted an effortlessly sleek and structured silhouette that contrasted beautifully with the ethereal fluidity of the skirt.

The A-line shape of the gown was formed by gathered layers of silk tulle, with the inner layer in a softer hue to add sculptural depth. Raw-edge finishes on the frills lent an airy quality, enhancing the gown’s breathtaking movement.

The embroidery itself was a labor of love: 50,000 black “cuvette” sequins, each a mere 5mm in diameter, were hand-crocheted by five artisans over the course of 180 hours.

The sequins, arranged in a “rivière” style, allowed for a seamless flow that was both eye-catching and fluid. A total of 25 meters of silk tulle were used to create the gown’s delicate layers, with the overall design taking 300 hours of painstaking work.

At the awards, Guillermo del Toro was honored with the Vanguard Tribute for Frankenstein, a film that celebrates the human-driven artistry of cinema. It Was Just an Accident by Jafar Panahi emerged as the evening’s big winner, sweeping the awards.

Akinola Davies Jr. took home the coveted Breakthrough Director award for My Father’s Shadow, while Tessa Thompson was recognised with the Spotlight Tribute.

Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman were honoured with the inaugural Musical Tribute, and One Battle After Another won Best Feature, with Paul Thomas Anderson accepting the award and dedicating it to his wife, Maya Rudolph, on their anniversary.

Meanwhile, Rose Byrne’s performance as Linda in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You was a standout of the evening, earning her recognition in the Leading Performance category. In this unflinchingly raw role, Byrne portrays a mother desperate to maintain control as she cares for a child with a mysterious illness.

Add a dysfunctional marriage, a sinkhole in their New York apartment, and a tense feeding schedule at a Montauk hotel, and you have a narrative that is both absurd and heartbreaking.

Byrne, at 46, delivers a performance that is both harrowing and beautifully controlled—an elastic band stretched to its breaking point before finally snapping. It is a career-defining moment, an immense feat of emotional restraint, and one of her most compelling performances to date.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You earned four nominations at the Gothams in total, including Best Film, Best Director (Mary Bronstein), and Best Screenplay, making it one of the night’s most talked-about films.

Though it didn’t win any awards, its nominations were a testament to the film’s profound impact and a clear indication of Byrne’s raw talent and range.

What Is LACMA?

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (better known as LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection spanning more than 6,000 years of creativity. Each November, its Art+Film Gala brings together Hollywood’s biggest names and the art world’s brightest minds.

Never shy of risk, she’s built a fashion gravitas that feels equal parts fearless and self assured, while still maintaining the laid-back Aussie cool, easy-going factor she is known for.

With the help of long-time stylist Andrew Mukamal, the actress has seamlessly shifted from ingénue to industry style force, blending taste with experimentation at every recent red carpet.

Mukamal being the same genius who turned her Barbie-era wardrobe into a cultural moment, the stylist has continued to refine her fashion identity by balancing archival treasures, with contemporary couture.

In the lead up to the success of the 2022 hit film, he spoke of their enduring collaboration, “Margot and I marathoned through 50 or 60 outfits”, he recalled of their Barbie fittings. An effort that paid off in dividends and proved the meticulous work behind her most striking moments during that press tour.

Her ascent began long before her current reign. After being dressed by Calvin Klein for the 2016 Met Gala and later starring in their ad campaign, it wasn’t long before she was being scouted by major international fashion houses.

The launch of Armani/Archivio is more than just a retrospective. Developed for the fiftieth anniversary of the brand, the platform is a living, digital museum: fifty-seven looks from the house’s archive, now accessible to the public as well as Armani Group employees. Think of it as a time capsule – razor-sharp tailoring from the 1980s, whisper-soft eveningwear from the 1990s, all reborn for a new, digital-first audience.

In a nod to sustainability, Armani is also taking the archive off the screen and back into the world. A curated selection of iconic pieces will be made available in seven boutiques globally, embracing a circular approach that allows archival fashion to inspire – and be worn – again. 

Yet the night wasn’t only about fashion history. True to form, Armani used the occasion to give back. The event raised funds for UNICEF, with the designer pledging support to the Global Humanitarian Thematic Fund, which provides rapid aid in crises- be they conflicts, natural disasters, or epidemics – with a particular focus on children’s rights.

As the lights of Venice flickered on the water, it was clear Armani had orchestrated something bigger than a party. This was fashion as cultural memory, as philanthropy, as community. And in a season where spectacle often overshadows substance, Armani reminded us why legacy – and generosity – never go out of style.

Now, as the A-listers and Hollywood heavyweights join Europe’s most notable creatives on the steps of the Palais des Festivals for the 78th iteration of the prestigious event, our attention switches – albeit briefly – to the return of Croisette style.

Although we’re promised a sartorial schedule as glittering as ever, the 2025 Cannes red carpet might look a little different, as celebrities and their stylists were thrown a couture curve ball by way of a last-minute dress code update. However, as history tells us, guests are rarely bothered by the strict dress codes or formal fashion rules handed down by the committee, so we doubt we’ll be seeing a dialled down version of past years.

The festival, which runs from May 13-24, will kick off with a welcome from this year’s jury, comprising Juliette Binoche, Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, Alba Rohrwacher, Payal Kapadia, Leila Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sangsoo, and Carlos Reygadas. And, with an array of highly-anticipated films and directorial debuts from the likes of Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor The Great), Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Jennifer Lawrence (Die, My Love) and everyone’s favourite future-Beetle, Harris Dickinson (Urchin), there’s plenty to look forward to.

“The first time I was 18, so I was kind of coming in very fresh,” the actress reflects hours before walking the Metropolitan Museum’s steps for a third time, in celebration of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” “I feel like the more times that we work together, I feel almost more freedom to experiment, to play a little bit.”

The 2025 Met Gala red carpet culminated in Peak’s most personal Chanel look yet. She says she didn’t necessarily “take a risk,” but she was more vocal in deciding how the “Tailored for You” dress code, honouring the style legacy of Black dandies from the 19th century to the present, would be tailored for her.

She landed on an entirely custom outfit crafted over 385 hours at Chanel’s Maisons d’art. The basis was look 36 from the house’s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2025 collection—which the Sunrise on the Reaping star’s input transformed into a custom dress made from raspberry crêpe and mousseline. It flows into an asymmetrical buttoned skirt with black sequin tweed, and comes topped with a braided jacket (plus, a jaunty tweed hat).

“I’m happy with where we landed because it’s kind of a balance,” Peak explains. “It’s classic and it’s tasteful and it’s made for me and it’s colourful. I feel like it’s a good representation of where I am in my life and how I want to play with fashion.”

While the shimmering black tweed and tied bow blouse are steeped in Chanel‘s DNA, Peak wove references to the matriarchs in her life into the look as well. “It’s just very heavily inspired by the women that have inspired my life and my sense of fashion,” she says. Some of the nods come from her personal history: Peak mentions how her mother and grandmother dressed for family occasions when she was younger, elegant and regal.

Reflecting on the sweeping history of Black dandyism at this year’s Met Gala, she also sought to pay homage to legends like Eartha Kitt and Josephine Baker. “They would have these beautiful, very overly feminine and extravagant looks, but then they would also wear a very well-fitting suit and a little hat and have like a cigar coming out, you know what I mean?”

Peak selected Chanel high jewellery and a never-before-seen watch with a personal philosophy: “I just wanted to feel powerful and confident. So anything that I saw or that I put on that made me feel that way, I was like, yeah, this is it.”

She chose Lune Talisman Buttons earrings in 18k gold, along with a stunning ring that combines 18k white gold, 18k yellow gold, diamonds, sapphires, garnets, and Japanese cultured pearl. Her Première Galon watch, set in 18k gold with a braided motif bracelet, won’t be available in stores until October 2025—an extra-luxurious complement to her custom dress.

The focus turned back to legendary women in fashion history when it came time to add the finishing hair and makeup touches. Makeup artist Tyron Machhausen looked back at Pat Cleveland and Diana Ross to craft a ’70s glam moment that softened around Peak’s eyes and created a dewy effect on her skin. “The focus of this look was the lip. A deep, glossy lip always feels luxurious to me—bold, but still wearable,” he says. “I chose a rich shade, with a high-shine finish, to channel that sense of drama and indulgence.”

Hairstylist Naeemah Lafond emphasized the placement of the tweed Chanel hat, with Peak’s hair cascading over her shoulders behind her, revealing only a glimpse of a braided kiss curl on her cheek. “I just wanted to have a little more drama and the hat definitely served in that category,” Peak says.

Peak was just as excited to take in the new Met Gala exhibit as she was to debut her custom Chanel look. The nods to historic Black figures in her outfit were only the beginning—”Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” traces a centuries-long legacy. “It feels like such a celebration of our culture and our people and our influence on fashion,” she says. “And for people that aren’t Black, it’s an opportunity to educate yourself and to actually learn and be curious about how Black people have influenced today’s culture, time and time again. I just think it’s a great conversation to open up.”

“For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,” the code reads with an added stipulation against “Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted.” In other words – no naked dress, no frothy tulle faux pas, and no fun?

While the festival has always held itself to an air of European elegance, it could be argued that these latest regulations were penned in direct response to Bianca Censori and Kanye West’s sartorial shock and awe strategy at this year’s Grammys. Or, it could simply be a push against the naked dress trend that holds celebrities in a couture chokehold.

Whether it’s sheer gowns that cause a stir, or figure-hugging creations covered in barely-there beading so delicately placed it could make Grace Kelly blush, the committee have made it clear that anyone not playing by the Cannes fashion rules will be prohibited from walking the red carpet.

Whatever the festival’s raison d’être for insisting on such guidelines, such stipulations are hardly nouveau when it comes to the iconic Croisette of Cannes.

For decades, actors, models and provocateurs have used that same staircase to protest, challenge and subvert the Cannes fashion rules imposed upon them – sometimes silently, sometimes in stilettos, and sometimes in no shoes at all. In banning naked dressing in 2025, the festival appears to be reacting not just to shifting tastes, but to how fashion is being used. When style becomes a statement, it also becomes harder to control – and thus the tension between traditional notions of “appropriate” red carpet attire and its regulation of the female form, continues.

So What Exactly Are The Cannes Film Festival Fashion Rules?

As per the committee’s charter, guests attending any Grand Théâtre Lumière screenings must adhere to the following:

• Evening wear consisting of: “A little black dress”, a cocktail dress, or, a “dark-coloured pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants,” for women.
• For men: A tuxedo in black or navy with bow-tie or “dark-coloured” tie.
• Shoes: Must be “elegant” and can be sandals “with or without a heel.”
• Bags: Tote-bags, backpacks or large bags are prohibited.
• Voluminous outfits: “In particular those with a large train.”
• No taking personal photographs and/or selfies on the red carpet.
• Naked dresses: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited.”

After a 2024 presidential campaign that saw Harris lose her bid for the White House, the former VP had quietly stepped away from the spotlight. Would she run for governor of California? That’s always been the trick with the Met Gala. For fashion subscribers, the avant-garde theatrics of the Met Gala red carpet makes the first Monday of May one of the most hotly anticipated days in the sartorial calendar. 

Only adding to the lead up is the pre-event speculation over who will make it onto the guestlist and how will they interpret this year’s theme? 

The notoriously secretive event rarely reveals such things before the red carpet begins, let alone what actually happens inside the Met Gala main event. 

The 2025 Met Gala Theme On The Red Carpet 

Of course, we can hazard a guess as to what this year’s red carpet will entail based on the theme ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ and dress code ‘Tailored For You’. 

We’re expecting plenty of nods to the work that inspired the exhibition, Monica L.Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity infused with tailoring and menswear.

Also central to this year’s theme is Black Dandyism. The sartorial and style movement was led by figures such as figures like Beau Brummell in 18th-century Britain and sought to move away from aristocratic fashion to instead favour sharp tailoring and refined grooming.

And for the accessory aficionados playing along at home, Lisa chose a Speedy P9 Bandoulière 20 evening bag adorned with hand-encrusted pearl Monogram to top it all off.

“Created for Zendaya by Men’s Creative Director Pharrell Williams, the tailleur echoes the superfine spirit of Black Dandyism and its zoot suits in the statuesque female adaptation of classic men’s tailoring in the 1980s, the era’s notion of power-dressing, and the suit-centric fashion photography that captured it. The hat reimagines the fedoras worn with men’s suits by Black female artists who trailblazed the rhythm-and-blues fusion with rock ‘n’ roll in the 1970s,” the Maison says of the Zendaya’s look.

The 28-year-old kept her makeup golden and glowy with a subtle metallic sheen to her lip and soft smokey eye.

Sadly for us, Zendaya and Tom upheld their tradition of walking the red carpet separately. And, much to fans surprise, the actress also appeared on the red carpet without Law Roach.

The creative duo have previously appeared alongside one another at various major events, including their iconic 2019 Met Gala red carpet arrival which saw Zendaya don a Cinderella-esque gown while Roach took on the role of Fairy Godmother with a wand and smoke.

However, Roach revealed earlier this year that they planned to arrive separately for the 2025 Met Gala.

“We are going to be on the Met Gala steps,” Law told E! News’ The Rundown, adding: “Yes, separately this year.”

“That’s going to be really amazing,” he continued. “We’re doing our own thing this year which is exciting.”

The Academy Awards marks the end of the awards season calendar, and typically, the star-studded guest list saves their best red carpet look for last.

Now in its 97th year, there’s been no shortage of impeccable Oscars style, with every frock being chosen with purpose and intent throughout the years.

From Audrey Hepburn’s 1955 dress by Hubert de Givenchy which marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship to Angelina Jolie’s velvet Atelier Versace dress with show-stopping thigh-high split, every Oscars look has the potential to become iconic.

With Demi Moore, Cynthia Erivo, Mikey Madison, Ariana Grande and Zoe Saldaña all nominated this year, we’re particularly excited to see what the Oscar-hopefuls wear.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the sartorial statements made over the last 97 years.

From glamorous gowns to statement frocks, every Oscars dress is chosen with purpose and intent. And – as author Dijanna Mulhearn writes in her historical tome Red Carpet Oscars – impact that goes beyond surface level to reflect the styles, and values, of that era.

Offering a rare glimpse behind the scenes of Oscars history, Mulhearn reveals the enduring legacy of Hollywood’s most famous red carpet, sharing the stories behind some of the most significant looks from the last 97 years.

Red Carpet Moments That Made Oscars History

Bette Davis (1936)

After being initially overlooked for the previous year’s award, Bette Davis was finally acknowledged by the Academy and chose to make a visual statement in what would be the first example of “protest dressing”.

She arrived “unsuitably gowned” in Orry-Kelly intending to look like something “the hired help” would wear.

Hattie McDaniel (1940)

Winner of Best Supporting Actress and the first African American to receive an Oscar, McDaniel was forced to enter the “whites only” hotel by a different door and sit at a segregated table.

McDaniel stood proudly for all African Americans with gardenias (said to be a symbol of purity) on the turquoise beaded jacket that matched her gown. Hollywood columnist Louella Parsons described her as “up to the queen’s taste” as she delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech to rapturous applause.

Audrey Hepburn (1955)

Performing Ondine on Broadway on the evening of the awards, Audrey Hepburn was rushed across town with a police escort just in time to accept the Oscar for Best Actress. The fit-and-flare shape and open back of her deceptively simple lace organdie dress were designed to frame her fine upper features and shapely shoulders, while the flowing skirt softened her strong dancer’s legs and diminished what she called her “big feet”.

It was the first time she’d been seen in a dress by Hubert de Givenchy, and so began their devoted friendship and collaboration, which marked the beginning of the designer/celebrity affiliation.

Julie Christie (1966)

The first woman to wear pants to accept an Oscar, Christie and a friend made her gold lamé jumpsuit from a commercial pattern. The homemade outfit encapsulated the Youthquake movement, appealing to a young American audience poised to reject a conformist society. 

Time magazine would go on to state that as a symbol of her generation, Christie was more influential than the “ten best-dressed women combined”.

Sacheen Littlefeather (1973)

Marlon Brando won Best Actor for a second time and asked Apache/Yaqui actor Sacheen Littlefeather (also known as Marie Cruz) to reject it on his behalf. She mounted the stage in a genuine Apache buckskin dress to demonstrate against the clichéd “treatment of American Indians … by the film industry”.

Cher (1986)

Cher’s red-carpet style had always been highly anticipated, but this revealing punk-meets-showgirl creation by Bob Mackie topped them all.

Deeply disappointed the Academy had not acknowledged her performance in Mask, Cher wanted to prove she still had it at 40, and instructed Mackie to go wild with a design that would make her impossible to ignore.

Having stolen the spotlight, Cher eclipsed every other star at the ceremony and her ensemble continues to be regarded as one of the most iconic Oscar outfits of all time.

Sharon Stone (1998)

Sharon Stone (pictured with then-husband Phil Bronstein) wrote her own rules on red-carpet fashion, wearing a satin Vera Wang skirt with a simple white button-down Gap shirt. The unorthodox pairing redefined modern glamour, making it more attainable, and catapulted the classic white shirt to the forefront of fashion must-haves.

Gwyneth Paltrow (1999)

The winner of the Best Actress Oscar, Gwyneth Paltrow epitomised the all-American sweetheart in a taffeta ball gown by the foremost fashion purveyor of instant American classics, Ralph Lauren.

The dress arrived slightly too big and Paltrow was slammed by the media for her fashion faux pas, but it only served to enhance the image of a delicate, youthful actress humbled to have made a big splash in Hollywood.

Anne Hathaway (2009)

Through this decade there was one woman who revolutionised the modern red carpet: Rachel Zoe. The LA stylist had become a celebrity in her own right, building her brand with a television show and an army of online devotees. She was responsible for many A-listers’ looks, including Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway’s custom Giorgio Armani champagne column gown.

Inspired by “Shanghai in the ’30s” and merging screen siren with sea siren, it was lined in Swarovski crystals, the round paillettes shimmering with pearly iridescence and graduating from tiny circles that increased in size as they spiralled diagonally around the body, accentuating Hathaway’s curves before pooling at her feet.

Angelina Jolie (2012)

Angelina Jolie showcased her sumptuous velvet Atelier Versace dress by playfully thrusting her leg out of the thigh-high split. The pose went viral and launched a thousand memes.

Along with then-husband, Best Actor nominee Brad Pitt, the power couple dominated the media and Jolie’s pose became part of popular culture.

Jane Fonda (2018)

The Oscars capped off an awards season that saw women band together and speak up against sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment business. Led by the godmother of Hollywood protests, Jane Fonda, many sported a Time’s Up pin to show support.

Billy Porter (2019)

A chance meeting with Christian Siriano inspired Billy Porter to take a stand in a tuxedo gown that embraced the gender fluidity dominating the social agenda. The velvet jacket, white shirt and black bow tie typical of a traditional gentleman were seamlessly combined with a classically feminine silhouette.

It was “a walking piece of political art” that sought tolerance and said, “I am not a drag queen, I’m a man in a dress.”

Kristen Stewart, Timothée Chalamet & Zendaya (2022)

Young Hollywood’s biggest stars took the reins to redefining the red carpet in a way not seen since the late 1960s youth movement, and skin was definitely in.

Dressed in Valentino, Zendaya’s cropped silk collared shirt had many recalling Sharon Stone’s 1998 look.

Another star not bound by red-carpet rules, Kristen Stewart mixed rebellion with the elegance of Chanel, styling her haute shorts suit with an open shirt.

Timothée Chalamet showed himself to be Hollywood’s leading male fashion icon, bucking gender-specific clothing in a sequinned black Louis Vuitton jacket with lace trim plucked from the spring 2022 womenswear runway.
