It’s called beauty sleep for a reason. But if you can’t always get what you want (or need), here are some other ways to look like you’ve just bounded out of bed

Look After Your Skin

Actual sleep will help get skin glowing. But if you have burnt the midnight oil, the next best way to look fresh come morning is to get gleaming with skincare. Here are fast fixes and sustained complexion strategies for radiant skin.If you’ve burnt the midnight oil, the best way to look fresh is skincare.

Right Now

Wash Your Face With Cold Water In The Morning.

Just as effective as rubbing your face with ice cubes, “this improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, whilst reducing inflammation, puffiness and redness”, explains Jocelyn Petroni, facial advisor for La Mer Australia. “It feels like a mini facelift every morning, refreshing without freezing.”

Her tip: keep a jug of water on standby in the fridge.

Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream, $94. Lanolips 12 Hour Overnight Lip Mask, $19.95;

Layer On Lip Balm.

Apply a generous amount and let it soak in overnight. Then when you wash your face the next morning, “submerge your lips in water for a few seconds before gently rubbing away the excess – the balm rolls off with all the dead skin cells for smooth, pink and bright lips.”

Jump In The Ocean.

“A sunrise swim cures even the worst sleep deprivation as the ocean’s minerals and salts holistically rejuvenate your skin and being,” says Petroni. Not seaside? “Splash your skin with a hydrating toner that contains all the goodness of the ocean.”

The Long Game

Invest In A Shiatsu Facial

Inspired by the Japanese massage, the facials “stimulate energy paths and acupressure points on the face, neck and head, helping release tension, improve circulation and detoxify skin for a more radiant and youthful appearance”, says Petroni. No pain, all gain.

Repair Your Moisture Barrier

The easiest way to do it: layer a lipid-rich or deeply calming formula over the top of your AM/PM moisturiser.

“Sounds simple, but physically retaining water and super-saturating your skin with compatible oils is the quickest way to repair and strengthen your hydro-lipid skin barrier,” says Petroni. “The long-term benefits are endless – and glowing skin is inevitable.”

Face Gym Multi-Sculpt Gua Sha, $96; La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+, 100ml, $42.95.

Pre-party prep

Whether the invite arrived a month ago or landed in your inbox just last night, here’s how to put your best face forward.

Two Weeks Before

Sylfirm X Advanced RF Needling at Silk Laser Clinics, from $449

Straight from South Korea – a nation forever doing cool things in skincare – this next-gen microneedling device utilises dual-wave technology, with both continuous and pulsed radio-frequency (RF) energy, so it can tackle pigmentation and tightening at the same time, and deliver results in fewer sessions.

The ultra-fine needles have an adjustable depth and can go as shallow as 0.3mm, making it ideal to treat delicate areas, like around the eyes; plus, they’re gold-tipped, which can help disperse the RF energy more evenly for better results, and makes it more suited to sensitive skin types. If you weren’t already sold, it also promises less discomfort and downtime.

This product is only available in clinic and is not available for purchase by the general public.

One Week Before

Mesoestetic Perfect Day Treatment, from $280 (60 minutes)

The accumulation of dead cells on the skin’s surface interferes with the reflection of light and dulls your glow. But this peel makes quick work of that.

It features the usual double-cleanse, mask, moisturiser and sun protection, but it’s the second step that does the work: a professional-strength pre-treatment solution and treatment ampoule is customised to your skin and goals, so the therapist will either apply and leave alone for a bit (beginner), rub in with gauze (intermediate), or rub in with gauze and add some microneedling (advanced).

Post-facial day peeling is not unusual, so ensure there’s enough time before your event. After the shed, expect hydrated, plump skin.

Day Before

Vanessa Megan Golden Hour Facial, from $260 (75 minutes)

Fun fact: as a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, gold can help soothe stressed skin and stimulate circulation – a win-win for luminous skin.

Following a double cleanse and gentle exfoliation, the brand’s Auric 24k Gold Serum and Nature’s Elixir Oil are layered on, before sheets of gold leaf are placed over the top (open your eyes at this point and sneak a peek, it’s so luxe!), and the whole thing is worked in with a face and décolletage massage. Heaven.

On The Day

Don’t underestimate the power of a sheet mask to impart instant dewiness. Kick things up a notch and double mask: apply an eye mask before layering a face mask over the top, then hang tight for five while they do their thing.

The Modern Way To Wear Glitter https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/how-to-wear-glitter-adult/ Wed, 17 Dec 2025 06:03:13 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1500755 It's glitter, but grown-up

The post The Modern Way To Wear Glitter appeared first on marie claire.

Forget festival sparkles and chunky, unforgiving flecks, glitter has officially grown up – and it’s now the shimmering crown of the season’s makeup statements. Here’s how to wear it

Wet-Look Lids

Glitter reads as chic rather than childish when placement is strategic. “A soft, subtle sparkle through the centre of the eyelid or in the inner corner can create a wet, multi-dimensional effect,” says Ocea McKenzie, MAC education manager for Australia and New Zealand.

Her trick? Press loose glitter on with a firm, dense brush, then lock it down with a setting spray. McKenzie rates the MAC Reflects Glitter in Pearl, as the shimmer looks glossy instead of glitzy (yes, there’s a difference).

Inner Light

If you want to test-drive glitter, start subtly. “Choosing just one feature will make it a highlight without overpowering the entire look,” says Make Up For Ever Pro Collective Artist Karyssa Leigh.

Her go-to is a dusting of ultra-fine pigment over the tear duct for an almost imperceptible glint. Leigh suggests the brand’s Star Lit Diamond Powder in white silver or white gold are flattering across skin tones for a refined twinkle.

Graphic Glitter

For those who favour a classic cat’s eye, swapping black liner for glitter is an updated twist. “Glitter winged liner is modern and wearable – pick a focal point and commit,” says Leigh.

Use a liquid glitter formula for precision, tracing just above the lash line and finishing with a flick at the outer corner. It’s playful yet elevated, and perfect for the party season, especially in gold or champagne tones.

“I’m a more is more kind of girl, so you’ll never have to twist my arm about glitter”

MAC’s Ocea McKenzie.

Make Up For Ever Artist Color Crayon Multi-Use Stick in Starfire Gold, $57, at Sephora. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Ruby Shimmer, $59. Chanel Les 4 Ombres Boutons in Boutons Baroque, $144. Mecca Max Eye Max Shimmer Gel Eyeliner in Bronzite, $25.

Twinkle Tips

According to McKenzie, “Glitter on the skin feels more festive, but a glittery nail can look effortlessly cool and elevated.”

Whether it’s a sheer shimmer veil over neutral polish or dense sparkle delicately placed across every tip, there are a multitude of sophisticated ways to add dazzle to your digits. For a trend-led take, consider negative-space glitter tips or a glazed manicure layered with ultra-fine shimmer.

All-Over Glimmer

Glitter needen’t stop at the eyes. “Grab your favourite liquid or powder highlight and wash it over collarbones and shoulders,” Leigh suggests.

Mix pigment into body oil or moisturiser to transform any hydrator into a luminous veil, or tap the same shimmer onto cheeks to dial up the glow. For a more natural finish, choose balms, sticks or creams to create a dewy sheen rather than full sparkle. Make Up For Ever’s Color Crayons are a no-brainer if you’re after mess-free application for eyes and cheeks.

Soft Shimmer

Yes, minimalists can still play with glitter. “A fine glitter can catch the light in the most delicate, unexpected way,” says McKenzie.

Leigh is partial to Make Up For Ever’s Star Lit Diamond Powder dusted over a soft brown shadow – “a magical moment,” she says. Apply sparingly with finger or fluffy brush for an incandescent finish that feels polished and wearable for any occasion.

Morphe Python Code Eyeshadow Palette, $26, at Mecca. Half Magic Glitterpuck Multi-Use Pressed Fairy Dust in Dopamine Sparkle, $51, mecca.com. Dior Addict Lip Maximizer in Sunlit Amber, $65.

High-Key Sparkle

From smudgy metallic lids to full-impact reflective pigments, glitter is swinging back towards fearless expression.

“Personally, I’m a more is more kind of girl, so you’ll never have to twist my arm when it comes to glitter,” says McKenzie with a laugh.

Leigh notes the resounding impact of brat summer on party makeup.

“We’re seeing more ‘unpolished’ makeups in the spotlight – smudgy liner with washes of colour, including glitter, especially metallics.”

Whether it’s a single saturated shade or a complex, multidimensional finish, this look is unapologetically party-ready.

Is Our Skin Really Smart? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/cle-de-peau-beaute-at-david-jones/ Wed, 17 Dec 2025 05:40:27 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1500613 One luxury beauty brand believes our skin has the ability to learn, adapt and thrive.

The post Is Our Skin Really Smart? appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
There’s a luxury beauty brand that believes our skin has the ability to learn, adapt and thrive – and it has just landed here with some serious A-list backing.

We investigate whether it lives up to the hype

Skin Intelligence

Beauty devotees who once generated thousands of flyer points to get their hands on Clé de Peau Beauté can now add to cart here. Previously, they’ve had to stock up in Tokyo, Paris or New York, but this month the luxury skincare and makeup line launches exclusively at David Jones (starting with Chatswood in Sydney and Bourke Street in Melbourne), bringing with it its signature philosophy of skin intelligence.

Confused about how skin can have inbuilt smarts? The brand invites us to think of it like this: our skin has the ability to learn, adapt and repair itself when given the right tools in the way of ingredients.

Owned by Japanese powerhouse Shiseido, Clé de Peau Beauté (French for “the key to skin’s beauty”) is built on innovation surrounding research into skin intelligence. Rather than seeing skin as a passive surface, scientists at Clé de Peau regard our outer organ as capable of not only recognising stressors but also distinguishing between good and bad stimuli.

“We believe the skin is very clever,” says Kiyoshi Sato, chief technology officer of the company’s lab. “It has the innate ability to distinguish negative conditions to maintain optimum conditions for itself and thrive. We take luxury and we combine it with disruptive science to help the skin cells self-optimise.”

Cle de Peau Le Serum is the brand’s cult favourite product.

How To Train Your Skin

It’s this duality of a highly scientific approach paired with sensorial luxury that sets Clé de Peau Beauté apart. “Think of it as your complexion’s personal trainer,” says Nancy Thong, regional brand director at Shiseido for Clé de Peau. “It awakens your skin and conditions it to its best performance so it can protect itself and boost that defence mechanism.”

The Serum, the brand’s hero product that acts as a prelude to all other products in the collections, is a good example of this. The clear, featherweight formulation is rich in ingredients such as lily concentrate, lemon myrtle and a kelp complex to help awaken the skin’s innate potential, improving moisture levels and supporting barrier function in as little as seven days, all while feeling like a deeply luxurious moment of self-care.

Feel The Luxury

“Every detail of our products, from the texture to the packaging, reflects the highest standards of craftsmanship, beauty and luxury,” says Mizuki Hashimoto, Clé de Peau Beauté’s chief brand officer, who sat down with marie claire in Los Angeles. “It’s a harmonious celebration of science and luxury.”

Makeup Artists love the Cle de Peau Concealer.

Its unique DNA stands the brand in a category of its own. “It blends the French elegance, with its global language of luxury, together with a strong heritage of Japanese culture, which encompasses science, meticulosity and attention to detail,” says Nicolas Baudonnet, chief marketing and business officer. “Those two things together create a brand that is special.”

Enlist An Expert

Experiencing a brand is key to truly leaning in, and Clé de Peau Beautés arrival promises not only decadent product but also luxury service. David Jones will host extensively trained Clé de Peau Beauté specialists inside high-spec treatment cabins to deliver indulgent facials. These treatments, one for radiance and renewal, the other for lifting and sculpting, combine lymphatic massage, micro-circulation stimulation and cutting-edge skincare (of course).

Fronting the global campaign is Nicole Kidman, a longtime fan of the brand who says the alignment was simple: “I use it,” Kidman tells marie claire at the Maybourne Hotel in LA. “I use the La Crème and I use The Foundation. My makeup artist put me onto it. My skin has completely changed.”

Cle de Peau Beaute La Creme is a favourite of Nicole Kidman.

A-List Backing

Says Baudonnet, “Radiance is not just what you see on the surface, it’s what comes from within. Nicole embodies the philosophy that we have on radiance, not only how she looks but how she is as a person. She is confident, she is elegant, but she has also championed meaningful causes that help women.”

Kidman is a goodwill ambassador for UN Women, a role that aligns perfectly with Clé de Peau Beauté’s long-standing partnership with UNICEF, which supports girls’ education in STEM and encourages young women to find confidence through learning.

Of course, no luxury line would be complete without striking packaging. The crystal-cut jars, luminizing palettes and gem-lidded serums are the stars of the collection, all refillable and designed to be as sustainable as they are beautiful. From the newly reformulated La Crème night treatment – a jewel in Clé de Peau’s crown, formulated with more than 60 ingredients and what Sato describes as his career’s work – to the cult-followed The Foundation, this is tactile product to covet.

Above Nicole Kidman became global ambassador for Clé de Peau Beauté in July.

Skin intelligence makes sense when you drill down to the meaning behind it: giving skin the best environment for it to feel strong, make good decisions and flourish. Just like the girls supported by UNICEF can do when given the right support. As for Australian beauty lovers? We too are about to gain a new way to glow from within.

Clé de Peau Beauté is available now at David Jones

The Affordable Moisturiser Beauty Influencers Can’t Stop Talking About https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/olay-super-collagen-peptide-moisturiser/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 04:11:23 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1500603 Hello, hydration

The post The Affordable Moisturiser Beauty Influencers Can’t Stop Talking About appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Every so often, a beauty product cuts through the noise — not because it’s new, flashy or exorbitantly priced, but because it works. In 2025, that product appears to be Olay’s Super Collagen Peptide Moisturiser, a quietly powerful cream that has gone from pharmacy shelf staple to full-blown beauty phenomenon.

The numbers alone tell a compelling story. The moisturiser has officially claimed the title of Australia’s number one best-selling facial moisturiser, with one jar selling every four minutes. In an industry dominated by prestige price tags and luxury branding, Olay’s rise feels refreshingly disruptive — and beauty influencers have taken notice.

So what’s behind the hype?

At the heart of the formula is 25 times more collagen peptides, engineered with a micro molecular mass designed to penetrate deeper into the skin. The result? Visibly firmer, more lifted-looking skin in just 28 days. Add 99 per cent purity niacinamide, known for strengthening the skin barrier and boosting hydration, and you have a moisturiser that delivers 24-hour moisture while actively targeting sagging and deep wrinkles.

What makes the buzz louder is how confidently this cream holds its own against products priced well into the hundreds. That tension between performance and price is exactly why influencers are rallying behind it. Pia Whitesell, Lindy Klim, Eleanor Pendleton and Lana Wilkinson have all shared their love for the moisturiser online, praising its visible results and lightweight feel. In Australia’s often unforgiving humidity, texture matters — and Olay’s ultra-light formula absorbs quickly, sitting comfortably under makeup and sunscreen without slipping or pilling.

The most compelling part? The price tag. At $69.99, Olay’s Super Collagen Peptide Moisturiser offers results that rival creams ten times the cost, making it a rare crossover hit — beloved by dermatologists, influencers and everyday users alike.

The Head-To-Toe Guide To Firmer, More Radiant Skin https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/head-to-toe-guide-to-firmer-skin/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 04:08:54 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1497586 Your all-over rejuvenation routine

The post The Head-To-Toe Guide To Firmer, More Radiant Skin appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
From the age of 25, your skin gradually loses suppleness and elasticity. Many studies have shown a significant decrease in collagen production year on year1. While this sounds daunting, there are plenty of ways to help keep your skin looking and feeling plump and firm.

A key factor in creating that fresh, firm skin is hydration. If your skin is dehydrated, it won’t look healthy, firm or bright. And we’re not just talking about the skin on your face; we’re talking about keeping you hydrated, supple and firm from head to toe (all without hitting the gym). Here’s a simple three-step approach to fresher, firmer skin.

Feel Firmer Head To Toe

Plumped Up Skincare Routine

olay regenerist serum and moisturiser

When it comes to keeping your skin fresh, firm and rejuvenated, most of us focus our efforts on facial skincare. Though you may have your daily skincare routine sorted, adding in an ultra-hydrating duo is bound to benefit your routine.

When applying your skincare: the golden rule is to begin with the most lightweight option, then layer thicker, creamier products on top. So, in an ideal routine, start by applying a serum-like product, such as Olay’s Ultra Firming Serum ($69.99 from Chemist Warehouse), perfect for supporting your skin in your plumping endeavours thanks to the inclusion of ingredients such as P coumaric acid (PHCA’s), bakuchiol and collagen peptides.

Once your firming serum has sunk in, layer it with the innovative hexapeptide-formulated Olay Super Collagen Peptides Moisturiser ($69.99 from Chemist Warehouse). Not only is this an ultra-hydrating moisturiser, but it’s also gone viral, and is now Australia’s number one selling facial moisturiser*. And for good reason, with skin lifting benefits like this one is, you’ll want to slather yourself in it morning and night.

Using this power-packed duo can help to visible increase your skin’s firmness and isn’t bouncy hydrated skin what we’re all after?

Refreshing Shower Essentials

olay regnerist firming body wash

To see all-over skin-plumping benefits, switch to a targeted body wash and add a few extra steps to your shower routine.

If you’re not already dry brushing or doing a regular physical exfoliation, this is your sign to start. Both techniques work to boost your circulation (known for being fantastic for supporting skin elasticity and oxygenation levels), along with shedding dead skin (a great way to promote skin cell turnover).

Once in the shower, opt for products that aim to deliver results. Olay’s Niacinamide Body Wash ($24.99 from Priceline) not only washes away the day but, with a niacinamide-rich formula, it will work to hydrate and nourish your skin.

Post-Shower Body Care

olay niacinamide firming body lotion

The key to keeping your skin firm and supple is head-to-toe hydration. Hot or warm showers can strip your skin of its natural oils. So, to keep those hydration levels up, you’re going to need to add a lotion into your post-shower routine.

Similar to your in-shower routine, you want to find a lotion that offers not only incredible hydration but targeted skin-supporting ingredients as well. Olay’s Niacinamide Body Lotion ($34.99 from Priceline) offers a hydrating formula of pro-glycerine, lipids and a vitamin B3 complex (where you’ll find that nourishing niacinamide). And with a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula, this lotion promises to not leave you feeling greasy or sticky.

]]>
Ever wish you could capture that fleeting magic of twilight — the moment when the world softens, and your senses feel sharper than ever? London-based niche fragrance brand Electimuss has done exactly that with Vesper Reverie, crafted alongside master perfumer Arturetto Landi.

Think of it as the scent of day slowly melting into night, where juicy fruits meet elegant florals and a warm, woody base that lingers like a whispered promise. It’s dreamy, seductive, and utterly hypnotic — the kind of fragrance that feels like a little luxury for the soul.

The Scent

Vesper Reverie is all about contrast in the most elegant way. The top notes are a juicy, slightly gourmand mix of blackcurrant, mango, peach, blood orange, star anise, green tea, and a hint of marine accord. These juicy, sparkling tones settle into a heart of hibiscus, champaca, jasmine, lily of the valley, rose, magnolia, and iris—florals that feel both bold and soft at the same time. Finally, the base unfurls with Madagascan vanilla, sugar cane, amber, oud, sandalwood, leather, and musk, creating a warm, almost hypnotic finish. The result? A fragrance that feels like twilight captured in a bottle: luminous, mysterious, and lingering.

The Mood

This is the scent for the twilight dreamer, the person who thrives in moments of quiet elegance and understated allure. Perfect for evenings out, late-night cocktails, or cozy dinners where you want to leave a lasting impression without saying a word. Vesper Reverie pairs as effortlessly with autumn’s crisp air as it does with a sultry summer evening—think of it as your signature sunset scent.

The Shelf

If you’re a fragrance collector, Vesper Reverie deserves a spot front and center. Its rich, layered composition works beautifully alongside lighter florals or even a touch of smoky oud from your cabinet. It’s the kind of scent you’ll reach for when you want to feel enveloped in mystery, sophistication, and just a hint of playful seduction. Worth every penny—and then some.

There’s something sacred about an evening skincare routine. Sure, there are some days that I’m so tired I just want to scrub my makeup off as quick as humanly possible, but on the days where I allow myself the time to indulge in a ritual, it’s truly transformative.

Regardless of whether I’m in a rush or have time to relax, one product I can’t live without is a cleansing balm. Designed to remove makeup, skincare and impurities all without stripping the skin, it’s an essential for me at the end of the day.

One that has been top of mind recently is the new Eye of Horus Skin Butter Cleansing Balm. A gentle balm-to-milk formula enriched with mango seed butter, marula oil, pomegranate oil and shea butter, it dissolves makeup and strengthens the skin barrier all at once.

“Each ingredient was chosen not only for its ability to dissolve makeup and impurities but also to replenish hydration and protect the skin barrier,” Holly Schleich from Eye of Horus tells us. “For us, designing clean, high-performance formulations is non-negotiable — it’s about delivering results without compromise.”

The balm-to-milk formulation is designed to be used by applying a pea-sized amount of the product to dampened skin, and adding water to activate the emulsion process.

After rinsing off and wiping away any excess product, the skin is left clean and hydrated without feeling like the natural oils have been stripped away.

Skin Butter Cleansing Balm is hand-blended in Australia from 100 per cent natural ingredients. Designed for all skin types, it’s a non-stripping formula that helps to strengthen the skin barrier and enhance product absorption.

Eye of Horus are also conscious of our planet – ensuring that the Skin Butter Cleansing Balm is packaged responsibly with post-consumer recycled plastic, while also being vegan-friendly, cruelty free and ethically sourced.

Available at Eye of Horus for $69, the Skin Butter Cleansing Balm could be the cleanser your skin has been waiting for.

The post This Skincare Newbie Could Be The Secret To Looking Younger In Just One Month appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Have you ever wanted to turn back the clock? Step back in time and make better decisions for your skin? Whether you wish you’d followed a more consistent skincare routine in your 20s or had been more aware of sun protection in your youth, most people have a skin regret or two.

But even if you’ve always been an A+ skincare student, as you age, your skin not only starts to lose elasticity, but it also can have an increase in ‘zombie cells’, affecting how your skin looks and responds to skincare.

What Is The Zombie Cell?

Senescent or ‘zombie cells’ are what start to happen as your cells stop growing but continue releasing inflammatory and tissue-degrading molecules1. These zombie cells degrade collagen production and can cause visual signs of ageing.

The Skincare Newbie Formulated To Help

According to Olay’s new research, there are three key skincare ingredients that can work to support your skin throughout this senescent process.

Firstly, PHCA or p-coumaric acid: This breakthrough ingredient has been found in a recent study to reduce the occurrence of zombie cells, which can lead to an improvement in pores and fine lines.

Secondly, bakuchiol: This plant-based, retinol-like alternative offers the same skin-supporting benefits without the UV sensitivity. This makes it stable enough to include in both your morning and nightly skincare routine.

And finally, collagen peptides. As your collagen production slows throughout the ageing process, opting for skincare products that offer a hydrating collagen mix is essential.

Olay Ultra Firming Serum

olay ultra firming skincare routine

10 years in the making, the Olay Ultra Firming Serum ($69.99 at Chemist Warehouse) has been designed to help visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines, firm-up skin, reduce the visible size of pores, smooth skin texture and even improve skin hydration. If all that isn’t enough, it’s also suitable for all skin types – as it comes with the dermatologically tested seal of approval.

Plus, the serum promises the lifted and firmed skin results in just 28 days. Yes, in just one month, you could be seeing the benefits of adding this lightweight, nourishing serum into your daily skincare routine.

Rewinding The Clock

Even though rewinding the clock might feel like the perfect answer to all of your skin concerns, the best approach is to diligently apply your skincare routine while embracing the mindset of ageing gracefully. Because at the end of the day, everyone’s skin shows a different story. So, as much as we’re all for a power-packed routine designed to help you look and feel your best, remember to be kind to yourself.

Has This One Step In My Skincare Routine Been Destroying All My Hard Work? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/shopping/polso-cleansing-cloths/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 22:36:23 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1497641 Time to go back to basics

The post Has This One Step In My Skincare Routine Been Destroying All My Hard Work? appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
I have to confess, there’s one thing in life I refuse to give up. Some might see it as a character flaw, but I see it as an investment: expensive skincare.

But what if all the hard work my luxury skincare is putting in was undermined by something as simple as a face cloth? Well, unfortunately, that might be the case.

Yes, that’s right, the humble bath towel or washcloth could be compromising the effectiveness of your skincare routine, thanks to millions of bacteria just waiting to land on the skin.

The bathroom is, after all, a breeding ground for bacteria, which can ultimately trigger breakouts, redness or even infection on the skin.

To combat this, Sydney-based brand Polso have created biodegradable, single-use face towels that offer a clean, hygienic (and eco-friendly) alternative to drying your face with a towel or washcloth.

“After years of struggling with acne, sensitivity, and endless ‘holy grail’ products that never quite delivered results, we discovered that our towels were undoing all the good work we invested in our routines and products,” co-founders Cami and Freya explain. “Spreading bacteria, exacerbating our rosacea, and causing unnecessary irritation — every single day!”

Made from 100 per cent viscose, the Polso Cleansing Cloths are a bacteria-free way to remove cleansing balms and oils or to wash off masks and treatments.

Gentle on even the most sensitive skin, these cloths are an effective way to pat the skin dry without spreading bacteria.

One box contains 50 wipes which will last you between one and two months. However if you’re like me and always forgetting to replenish, Polso offer a subscription option, which offers discounts when buying in bulk.

Currently on sale for Black Friday, you can nab the Polso Cleansing Cloths for 25 per cent off!

On a warm October evening, Sydney’s Curzon Hall glowed under chandeliers and candlelight as celebrities, makeup artists and beauty insiders alike gathered to celebrate the arrival of Clé de Peau Beauté. The global luxury skincare brand is finally available in Australia at David Jones stores.

Hosted by Erin Holland and guided by the theme “The Key to Radiance is You,” guests moved through a multi-sensory experience which was designed to showcase the brand’s signature fusion of science, craftsmanship and luxury.

Each room offered a deeper look into the brand’s groundbreaking concept of skin intelligence the belief that our skin can learn, adapt and thrive when given the right hard-working formulations.

“We believe the skin is very clever,” explains Kiyoshi Sato, the brand’s Chief Technology Officer, who presented at the event. “It can distinguish between good and bad stimuli to maintain its best condition. We combine luxury with disruptive science to help skin self-optimise.”

What is Clé de Peau Beauté?

Owned by Japanese powerhouse Shiseido, the brand (its name translating to “the key to skin’s beauty”) the Clé de Peau Beauté skincare and makeup collection has launched exclusively at David Jones. The first counters to open are department store’s Chatswood Chase store in Sydney and Bourke Street store in Melbourne.

Skincare devotees who have had to fly to beauty mecca’s such as Tokyo, New York or Paris can now get their hands on the brand’s award-winning La Crème. The jewel of Clé de Peau Beauté”s crown, La Crème is the culmination of the brand’s extensive research.

Still not convinced? Formulated with over 60 ingredients, Sato describes La Crème as his career’s work, bottled.

Nicole Kidman is global ambassador for Clé de Peau Beauté.

Nicole Kidman As Ambassador

A fan of Le Creme is Nicole Kidman. Kidman has recently been announced as the global ambassador for the brand. A longtime user of the brand, she tells Marie Claire that her skin “completely changed” after using La Crème and The Foundation.

The A-lister’s partnership underscores Clé de Peau Beauté’s mission to empower women worldwide: a commitment reflected in the brand’s UNICEF partnership, which has supported the education of more than 12.4 million girls across 11 countries since 2019.

The Clé de Peau Beauté skincare range

Cult-Worthy Products

There is a lot in Clé de Peau Beauté’s range that is worthy of investment. But one that you should look into when you first head to counter is The Serum. Formulated with radiant lily and lemon myrtle extract, this ultra lightweight serum acts as the precursor to all other skincare in the range and works to support skin barrier recovery, smoothness and luminosity.

At the event, the products drawing attention were the La Creme, The Foundation and The Concealer, which makeup artist to the stars Max May told Marie Claire he couldn’t “wait to get his hands on”.

Luxury Treatments

Also at the David Jones counter are annexed luxury treatment rooms that offer facial treatments that not only feel like real luxury but also have the ability to let you walk out looking radiant and lifted.

It’s this duality that defines Clé de Peau Beauté: scientific innovation meets censorial indulgence.

“Think of it as your complexion’s personal trainer,” Nancy Thong, Regional Brand Director told Marie Claire before the event. “It awakens your skin and conditions it to its best performance so that it can protect itself and boost that defence mechanism.”

“It’s all about awakening what already exists in the skin,” explains Thong. “We’re not masking or repairing; we’re re-educating.”

Clé de Peau Beauté The Serum, Lotions and Protective Day Emulsion are all cult-followed products.

What Makes The Brand Unique?

At the heart of the brand is its dedication to exquisite craftsmanship. “Every detail of our products, from texture to packaging, reflects the highest standards of beauty and luxury,” says Mizuki Hashimoto, Chief Brand Officer.

With crystal-cut jars, refillable packaging and formulas that marry art and science, Clé de Peau Beauté is redefining radiance from the inside out.

As Nicolas Baudonnet, Chief Marketing and Business Officer, explains to Marie Claire, “We blend French elegance, the global language of luxury, with Japanese precision and attention to detail.”

Australian beauty lovers, your key to glowing, intelligent skin has arrived.

The post The Double Hydration Boost Your Skin’s Been Waiting For appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
The Koreans understand it, so do skin experts: hydration is key to plump, glowing, juicy-looking skin.

For a long while, though, it took a back seat to things that seemed more action-packed, like vitamin C, fruit acids and retinols. These ingredients play key roles in our skincare, but they don’t work at their peak without hydrating replenishment.

One of the vital ingredients to get skin back to bouncy and glowing is hyaluronic acid. Lauded as being able to hold 1000 times its weight in water, it’s masterful at adding back the hydration your skin loses daily from sun, air-conditioning and travel.

Size matters

Absorption is important. Some argue that hyaluronic acid can sit on top of the skin and not penetrate to where it works best. But science has come to the rescue with new, updated tech that tackles that issue. Take Elizabeth Arden’s latest hyaluronic acid and peptide-dosed serum and water cream. Both have been powered up with next-generation hyaluronic acid molecules that have been downsized so they can penetrate the skin’s surface layers easier.

“Hyaluronic acid has become a daily essential for many,” says Susan Zuckerman, vice-president of global marketing, skincare at Elizabeth Arden. “Our new Hyaluronic Acid + Peptides innovations deliver high-performance, visible plumping, filling and firming benefits, instantly and over time.”

Combine with Elizabeth Arden Hyaluronic Acid + Peptides Ceramide Capsules Hydra-Plumping Serum

The importance of absorption

With five different types and molecular weights of hyaluronic acid at play in these two new formulations, the magic really happens when the HA gets to its destination. Once absorbed, the size-shifting hyaluronic acid expands to fill and plump the appearance of skin.

This added support gives skin the look of firmness. It also helps support the skin’s natural ability to synthesise its own hyaluronic acid, meaning the complexion can retain more moisture over time.

Support ingredients

To help bolster collagen reserves, the new releases also include a peptide complex (which boasts an impressive 16,000 peptides), to help further firm, fill and volumise the look of skin. And phytoceramides in the cream help replenish and support the skin’s moisture barrier.

Layer up

Fans of the brand’s biodegradable capsules will love the mono-dose delivery of the serum, which ensures freshness, purity and potency every time you pop. The addition of the water cream allows for a drenching layer of moisture (which formulators say will help deliver up to a whopping 240 hours of hydration) to leave skin gleaming.

If things are looking a little lacklustre at pore level, daily doses of hydration could just be your skincare routine’s missing link. So by all means, keep the actives. Just don’t forget to layer them up with the ingredients that will also give your skin that juiciness it needs.

Where Are You At In Your Retinol Journey? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/retinol-journey/ Mon, 06 Oct 2025 23:51:41 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1295092 marie claire’s guide to building a retinol routine...

The post Where Are You At In Your Retinol Journey? appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Are you using retinol already? No? Here’s why you should be.

Retinol can sound like a daunting skincare ingredient, but when you have the right intel on hand and a skin-supporting product by your side you’ll soon be seeing smooth clear skin results.

If you’ve never even contemplated adding retinol to your skincare routine, this is your moment to pause and reconsider. You might have assumed that the ingredient is reserved for older skin or blemish-prone skin, but just about everyone can benefit from adding retinol to their routine. You’ve just got to see all the options available first.

The Retinol Journey

Before you delve into the world of retinol, you should first understand what the active ingredient is. Retinoids are an active derivative of vitamin A. The three most common forms of retinoids are retinyl esters, retinol and retinal, with retinol being the most commonly used ingredient.

Retinol offers a range of skin-supporting benefits, such as its ability to visibly improve skin tone and texture, while working to visibly smooth fine lines. Which in turn can help to keep your skin looking more youthful. Plus, it helps to keep your skin feeling soft and supple.

How To Build A Retinol Routine

retrieve one retinol

Building a retinol routine takes time. The two main things we need everyone to remember when it comes to retinol is to start low and slow, and that results aren’t instant.

Increasing your retinol usage and strength takes time. When starting on your retinol journey, choose a low strength and apply it once or twice (depending on your tolerance) a week in the evenings. If you have no reaction, then you can increase the frequency of use until your skin can tolerate nightly use.

If you’re looking for a retinol that can take you throughout your retinol journey, let us introduce you to ReTrieve. One ($64.99 from ReTrieve.One). This brand new serum is the highest non-prescription strength retinol available, offering a one per cent concentration that is formulated with hyaluronic acid and peptides and is enriched with buddleja flower extract.

The main tip for using retinol effectively is to employ the ‘sandwich method’. The long recommended derm tip found popularity on TikTok where users let you in on the secret of applying a layer of moisturiser, followed by retinol and then topped off with another layer of moisturiser. Basically, moisturiser is essential and protecting your skin from the sun is crucial. Be sure to apply SPF50+ religiously (topping up throughout the day) and follow sun safety guidelines.

If all of this sounds overwhelming or if over-the-counter options aren’t enough, speaking to a doctor can help guide your skincare journey. A doctor will be able to help you customise a personalised treatment plan that’s right for your skin. And while you’re there, it’s always worthwhile getting your skin assessed with photoageing technologies, as it can optimise your long-term skin health.

Embrace Your Skin

When building a skincare routine, you’re not only going to want to add in products and ingredients that support your skin’s needs, but also create a routine that you find easy to follow.

By creating a ritual around applying your skincare, the process of caring for and protecting your skin will become a welcomed moment in your day. And can even help you to embrace the skin that you’re in, just as it is.

Do you need a little help to celebrate your skin? Then you’re in luck, because the key to great skin is a science-backed skincare routine. So, if you’re over playing the skincare ingredient guessing game, head to ReTrieve. One, where you can connect with an AI skincare assistant to better guide your journey, or link you to a doctor to give you the best skin treatment to suit your skin needs.

While purchasing the best face cream sounds simple enough, the task can be deceptively daunting once you’re confronted with shelves of products — not to mention countless pages of options courtesy of online shops.

With thousands of different formulas on offer – each promising the elimination of wrinkles and discolouration, pump skin and unparalleled hydration – pinpointing the exact face moisturiser to add to cart is next to impossible.

Sure, you can take the recommendations of celebrities with flawless complexions as gospel, spend countless hours watching beauty influencers on TikTok or do your own research into the benefits of a single ingredient. But gaining intel on the face moisturisers other people claim to be their favourites – and buy on repeat – sure does help.

As does knowing when and how to use them. For super-soft skin that has a lit-from-within glow, apply your face moisturiser on clean skin (with clean hands, too), layered over a serum. Start in the centre of your face and work outwards, gently patting your moisturiser onto your skin.

Scroll down to see the round-up of the best-selling face creams from Australia’s top beauty retailers.

Some beauty products are fleeting trends. Others, like Lancôme’s Advanced Génifique serum, become benchmarks. Now, fifteen years on, the cult serum has entered a new era with Génifique Ultimate, a reformulated version that takes “repair” from beauty buzzword to biotech reality.

So what’s different? At the heart of the upgrade is Beta-Glucan-CM, a biotech-derived ingredient made from yeast cell walls. Don’t let the science-heavy name throw you: it is designed to boost the skin’s own ability to recover from daily stressors like pollution, UV exposure, late nights and life.

In Lancôme’s words, it “switches on” the skin’s repair mechanisms, helping reduce redness, smooth fine lines, and strengthen the moisture barrier. In each dropper sits an almost cinematic 90 trillion Beta-Glucans.

“If your skin needs a glow-boost, Génifique Ultimate is perfect for adding smoothness and hydration to skin.”

Sally Hunwick, Marie Claire and ELLE Australia‘s beauty director

“A strong skin barrier is key to a radiant, plump complexion. If your skin needs a glow-boost, Génifique Ultimate is perfect for adding smoothness and hydration to skin,” Sally Hunwick, Marie Claire and ELLE Australia‘s beauty director. “I love this new formula, which has been updated with beta-glucans, an amazing ingredient to help repair skin and promote a strong skin barrier, while hyaluronic acid and prebiotics help hydrate and firm up skin.”

There is also a nod to the microbiome conversation that has dominated beauty in recent years. Génifique Ultimate retains its seven pre- and probiotic fractions to keep skin balanced, plus hyaluronic acid for hydration and licorice extract to calm irritation. The result, according to Lancôme’s testing platform which involved 1,000 people across skin types and tones, is visible repair in just one week.

Of course, this would not be 2025 without a sustainability update. The new Génifique bottle is refillable, sleek in its black and silver redesign, and engineered to cut packaging waste by more than half. Think less guilt, more glow.

For a product that has always balanced French luxury with hard science, Génifique Ultimate feels like the logical next chapter. It is less about chasing eternal youth and more about helping skin recover from the pace of modern life, which might just be the most luxurious treatment of all.

The Innovative Ingredients Taking Over Your Skincare Routine https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/innovative-skincare-ingredients/ Tue, 26 Aug 2025 22:52:11 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1290529 Plus, the powerhouse products that deliver the ultimate dose of hydration

The post The Innovative Ingredients Taking Over Your Skincare Routine appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
If there’s anything we’ve learnt from the evolution of skincare, it’s that hydration is key and non-negotiable in every routine.

Gone are the days of harsh skin-stripping cleansers and heavy face creams. Because today, beauty lovers are looking for effective, science-led formulas that work with the skin to restore a plump, healthy glow.

If you’ve been following along with the latest and greatest in the beauty world, then the powerhouse trio of ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides might just ring a bell.

These innovative ingredients are reshaping everything we thought we knew about optimal skin hydration, offering a new wave of result-driven routines.

A Powerhouse Trio

We often think of hydration as just slathering on a moisturiser and calling it a day. But, to achieve your glowiest skin yet, it requires a more sophisticated process.

This is where your ceramides, hyaluronic acids, and peptides come in, with each one playing a unique role in nourishing your skin.

 • Lock it in with ceramides: Often thought of as the skin barrier protectors, ceramides are key to locking in moisture and keeping out any unwanted stressors. When the skin barrier is supported with ceramides, hydration lasts longer, and skin feels stronger.

 • Fill it out with hyaluronic acid: Referred to as the moisture magnet of the skincare world, hyaluronic acid can attract and hold 1,000 times its water weight. Depending on the specific formulation, the molecules in hyaluronic acid are designed to sit at different levels of the skin. Some are created to sit on the skin’s surface, providing an almost instant boost of hydration. While others are made to dive deeper into the skin’s layers to replenish the hydration where it is needed most. The result? Skin that feels full, bouncy, and most importantly, fresh!

 • Firm it up with peptides: Made up of short chain amino acids, peptides help support the skin’s natural collagen production. This can range from helping with skin firmness, overall elasticity, and achieving that youthful-looking glow.

When working together, this powerhouse trio can almost act like a natural filler for the skin. Hyaluronic acid plumps, ceramides lock it in, and peptides help to firm and sculpt.

Skin Science Meets Innovation

Known for their science-led approach to beauty, it’s no surprise that Elizabeth Arden is utilising this innovative trifecta in their latest formulations.

Featuring a new cutting-edge formula, the Hyaluronic Acid + Peptides Hydra-Plumping Ceramide Capsules combine size-shifting hyaluronic acid (HA) with collagen-supporting peptides. This will deliver a precise dose of hydration wrapped up in a biodegradable capsule.

The formula uses micro-HA that are 500 times smaller than traditional hyaluronic acid to deeply penetrate the skin’s surface layers. Once absorbed, they expand to fill and plump the skin, delivering a firmer, more hydrated skin.

Hyaluronic Acid + Peptides Hydra-Plumping Ceramide Water Cream was designed to help firm and restore, delivering a potent dose of hydration. At the heart of this advanced formula is 5D Hyaluronic Acid technology. This uses different types of Hyaluronic Acid to penetrate multiple surface layers of skin for both instant and lasting hydration.

Plus, the gel-cream texture is lightweight on the skin!

Designed to be used in conjunction, each product will fit seamlessly into your routine, whether that be before your SPF in the morning or as the final step in the evening.

Together, they create a streamlined yet powerful ritual for skin that looks plump, firm, and radiant.

The Surprising Link Between Skincare And Happiness https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/neurocosmetics-skincare-nervous-system/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 05:56:15 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1282308 Mood, meet moisturiser

The post The Surprising Link Between Skincare And Happiness appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Picture this: you’re in the bathroom after a hectic day, your breathing is uneven and a headache is not far off. You pluck a serum from your line-up and, as you massage it over your face, your skin starts to flush from the kneading, not surprising, but wait … there’s also something happening inside – your mind quietens, your heart rate settles and your breathing steadies. That serum? It’s not a magic potion, it’s neurocosmetics.

Beauty and wellness brands are embracing neurocosmetics, a category of products, therapies and treatments that, the theory goes, interacts with and impacts our nervous system, and influences our emotions and behaviour.

The idea that a beauty product might deliver a benefit that goes beyond the surface is not entirely new, as brands, influencers and editors (ahem) have long espoused the mood-enhancing benefits of “self-care”.

The entire fragrance industry is also built on the emotion-altering premise that our sense of smell can trigger memories or feelings – how a whiff of white florals takes you back to that balcony in Positano – and that’s also why many sleep-inducing products are scented with lavender.

Skincare

Today’s neurocosmetic-inflected fragrances, however, go one step further: they don’t want to stir up old memories but help create new ones. “Scent could be associated with changes of the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions like heart rate, blood pressure and sudation [sweat secretion],” says Dr Christelle Porcherot, a principal scientist at fragrance and taste company DSM-Firmenich. For example, peppermint is “associated with the stimulation of the nervous system, leading to increased alertness and reduced fatigue”, she says.

“We know the skin and brain are linked; the nervous system connects with the entire body”

Neuroscientist Dr Sarah McKay

France’s Initio Parfums meanwhile, works with DSM-Firmenich scientists and perfumers to create fragrances that Initio says heighten consumers’ positive emotional experiences. How? It’s developed a protocol that combines neuroscience, linguistics, psychology and AI to measure both conscious and unconscious emotional responses to its fragrances.

Other emotion benders included Narciso Rodriguez EDP Radiante, which features a cotton flower note that perfumer Aurélien Guichard believes elicits a feeling of relaxation, and the floral-fruity Elie Saab Elixir Love, which includes an exclusive “love accord” that the brand says prompts the pleasure sensors and stirs up feelings of attachment and seduction.

Skincare Meets Sound

Spas have always sought to mellow the mind: music, candles, the waiting room sofa texture – all conspire to de-stress before we’ve even slipped on a robe. “Our senses are our way back into our bodies,” explains Freya Berwick, founder and director of Melbourne’s Sense of Self bathhouse and day spa (a Sydney location is due to open this year).

From a curated playlist of music to “our signature scent, the bathhouse and massage studio design, the materiality used, the way our staff communicate” – all help “to guide our guests to a place of calm”, says Berwick.

Tanya Alijani, a sound-healing practitioner, meditation and breathwork guide, seeks to soothe the senses via sound and vibration. “Since everything in existence carries a frequency – including us – certain sounds have the power to shift our state of being on a deep, cellular level,” she says.

Sound waves aren’t confined to our ears; they move through the body so that we “feel” the sound. By exposing the nervous system to specific frequencies and vibrations, Alijani explains, sound healing “can guide the nervous system from stress and overactivity into a state of harmony, where the body’s natural healing mechanisms are activated”.

Let’s get back to skincare, and the intriguing question: can a neurocosmetic serum influence the communication between the skin and nervous system, and modulate chemical levels to alter your mood?

“We know the skin and brain are linked; the nervous system connects with the entire body, and the skin is no exception,” says Dr Sarah McKay, a neuroscientist and science communicator. When you hug a loved one or get a massage, that touching of skin impacts nerve fibres and can trigger the release of the oxytocin hormone, which can soothe psychological or emotional stress.

“With about one million sensory nerve fibres, the skin is the organ with the highest density of sensory fibers in our body and is thus able to communicate continuously with our brain, and vice versa, through neuromediators,” says Pauline Poussin, scientific communication manager at Neuraé, a neurocosmetic skincare brand from Sisley Paris that launched overseas in 2024 (no word when it will be available here).

Is Skincare Communicating With Your Nervous System?

Neuromediators operate like SMS, transmitting messages between the skin and brain. Think back to our massage scenario: all that skin kneading generates the “release of oxytocin and beta-endorphins that induce a feeling of relaxation and emotional wellbeing”, says Poussin. We also know that psychological stress affects the skin, releasing excessive amounts of cortisol, which can impact both the immune system and skin barrier, and lead to conditions including redness, sensitivity and blemishes.

There is a whole category of products formulated for stressed skin, and these “generally work on moderating the skin’s local sensory captors, in a similar way that a sensitive toothpaste helps to moderate the teeth’s response to heat, cold and pressure”, explains Charlotte Turner, head of education at Clarins ANZ.

A number of ingredients can be beneficial in these situations, including adaptogens, which can help the body adapt to stress (Kiehl’s Vital Skin-Strengthening Serum is one of these), and clary sage, which “works directly on soothing the skin’s sensory captors to lessen the redness and inflammatory response”, says Turner, whose brand produces Clarins Calm-Essentiel Soothing Emulsion.

The Verdict On Neurocosmetics: Hype, Hope Or Healing?

While there is some early analysis around neurocosmetics, a definitive, scientific link is yet to materialise. Can a topically applied ingredient effectively interact with neuroreceptors to interrupt or activate the skin’s receptors and nervous system pathways? I ask McKay: are neurocosmetics working only on the skin response, and not the central nervous system response?

So, in the case of stressed skin products, are they lowering skin stress levels without actually tapping into the brain’s emotional or stress levels? “I’d say your hunch is right,” she says. “While the ritual of skincare can be soothing, the idea that a cream can ‘neuromodulate’ emotions starting at the cellular level in the skin is pretty far-fetched.

“Certain ingredients might interact with skin receptors and influence redness or sensory perception, but the evidence for direct impact on mood or brain function is very limited,” explains McKay, surmising that “most effects are likely come from texture, smell or the self-care ‘ritual’ versus the actual ingredients in the product”.

The takeaway: scent seems to be the most effective route to a change in mood that we have at hand right now. But that’s not to say that our skincare routine isn’t doing our mind some good too.

So you can chalk your six step Sunday night self-care routine. Stress releases excessive amounts of cortisol, which can lead to inflammation, sensitivity and blemishes. as more than just skin deep.

Nicole Kidman Uses This $810 Cream To Keep Her Skin Looking Good https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/nicole-kidman-cle-de-peau-beaute/ Tue, 05 Aug 2025 00:01:44 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1288670 And here’s why she’s putting her Hollywood cred behind it

If “Babygirl” is anything to go by, Nicole Kidman is showing no signs of slowing down in her career. And with her flawless, pore less skin bravely on show sans makeup for good portions of the film, Kidman certainly looks incredible – even while making us squirm and giggle uncomfortably in our seats.

As we gaze at her on our screens, as well as marvelling at her performances in every hit show Kidman stars in, we also wonder how on earth she is able to keep her skin looking so good.

The It turns out that the A-lister has a secret weapon. And it comes in the form of a gold and pearl-dosed night cream by luxe French brand Clé de Peau Beauté.

The brand’s star La Crème night cream is decadent and chock-filled with skin-restoring ingredients such as amino acids, Japanese Pearl Shell Extract and Platinum Golden Silk Extract.

It’s an overnight decadent helping-hand for things like contouring, smoothing and brightening up skin while you sleep.

Movie star-worthy skin comes with a price tag though and you’ll need to flex the plastic for overnight restoration of this calibre. This investment cream will set you back US$810 for a 50ml pot.

Kidman has long been a fan of Clé de Peau Beauté so the announcement of her coming on board as Global Brand Ambassador for the skincare and makeup brand makes good sense.

And while the brand is certainly worthy of the Hollywood partnership, the collaboration is not all skin deep. As a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, Kidman will work with Clé de Peau Beauté to champion initiatives focused on empowering women and girls.

The brand has told Marie Claire that, together, the partnership aims to drive positive change “by promoting education, economic opportunities, and combating gender-based violence” to inspire “confidence and drive positive change through beauty”.

With an Aussie as its face, we are all fingers crossed that this means the French brand will finally be available on our shores.

Neutrogena’s cult-favourite Hydro Boost is turning 10 – and it’s celebrating with a splash. Enter: Tate McRae, the 21-year-old singer, songwriter, dancer, and now, Neutrogena’s newest global brand ambassador. The face of a fresh new campaign, McRae is fronting the relaunch of the brand’s best-selling Water Gel – a product so beloved that one jar is sold every two seconds globally. Yes, every two seconds.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Neutrogena – a brand I’ve trusted since I was young,” McRae says. “What I love about this campaign is how real it feels. We’ve all been there – those moments where your brain just won’t stop spiralling, and the last thing you need is the overthinking messing up your skin.”

Her solution? Hydro Boost. Powered by hyaluronic acid and a featherweight formula, it’s skincare that doesn’t overcomplicate things. “It keeps my skin hydrated and is the perfect reminder that skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to work,” McRae adds.

The campaign also marks a bold new chapter for Neutrogena, launching under the tagline ‘Beauty to a Science’. It’s a nod to the brand’s 90-year legacy of blending dermatological credibility with feel-good results. Think: serious science, but make it sensorial.

To help tell that story, McRae is joined by none other than Dr. Muneeb Shah – yes, that Dr. Shah, TikTok’s most-followed dermatologist. Together, they’re spotlighting the real (and often overlooked) link between stress, overthinking, and your skin barrier.

“By featuring Tate and her infectious energy alongside Dr. Shah’s expertise, we’re bridging the gap between beauty and science,” says Andrew Stanleick, Kenvue’s President of Skin Health & Beauty. “With Neutrogena Hydro Boost, we’re redefining hydration and showing how skincare can empower you to feel your best every day.”

The campaign will roll out globally across social, digital, and in-store platforms – with McRae even integrating Neutrogena into her upcoming So Close To What world tour. (Expect dewy skin with backstage access.)

As far as celeb-brand pairings go, this one’s a no-brainer. McRae’s got the reach (12.6 billion+ streams and counting), the credibility (multiple #1 hits), and the real-girl relatability that perfectly matches Hydro Boost’s vibe: effective, no-fuss, and actually fun to use.

Hydrated skin. High notes. No stress. That’s the glow-up we needed.

marie claire’s Guide To The Rise Of Skin Cycling https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skin-cycling-guide/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 20:51:15 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1286022 Is Skin Cycling over?

The post marie claire’s Guide To The Rise Of Skin Cycling appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

With the rise of social media trends, we’ve seen skincare go from being an inconsistent chore to a nightly non-negotiable. The ‘clean girl’ aesthetic had people leaning heavily towards a pared-back beauty routine, focusing on potent active-packed formulas to deliver dewy, fresh skin.

But with this newfound skin confidence, many were unknowingly compromising their skin’s moisture barrier, by ‘cannonballing’ their skin – in other words, incorporating too many harsh products too quickly.

Many went in search of a gentler routine that wasn’t going to irritate their skin but would still have them seeing results. First, we saw the rise of the efficacious skin cycling routine, and then as we became more invested in multi-beneficial products, we saw multi-tasking must-haves take over.

What Is ‘Skin Cycling’?

This massively popular way to apply your skincare is the practice of alternating between active ingredients in your skincare routine, moving between exfoliants, actives and a hydrating gentle recovery day. The practice ensures that your skin is getting everything it needs, by maximising the effects of each product while also aiming to reduce any potential irritations.

The derm-founded routine started as a four-day cycle. But since its meteoric rise in popularity, thanks to Beauty Tok, skincare devotees have understandably taken matters into their own hands with how they cycle through their products. The three key ingredients that are kept separate include:

Vitamin C

Known for its brilliant brightening power, vitamin C is best used in the morning to fight free radical damage. But when combined with other ingredients it can become unstable and significantly less effective.

Retinol

This potent powerhouse ingredient should be used with caution. Retinol works to increase skin cell turnover and renew the skin. But when combined with other active ingredients, the combination can strip your skin’s natural oils.

AHAs/BHAs

These incredible exfoliants are wonderful for sloughing away dead skin and buildup on your skin, but when paired with anything active, their reaction can be too harsh for your skin.

Are Multitasking Products The End Of Skin Cycling?

Does the rise in convenient multitasking products spell the end of the skin cycling routine? Honestly, we’re probably not about to see the end of it soon. However, the current love for multitasking, results-driven, hard-working products is why we’re willing to spend big all while saving time and energy.

Can The Way Skincare Products Are Mixed Change?

lancome Rénergie C.R.x. Triple Serum Retinol

If like us, you never thought you’d see the day when previously uncombined ingredients would be mixed into a non-irritating, skin-benefiting formula, then we’ve got some exciting news for you. Lancôme’s latest launch, Rénergie C.R.x. Triple Serum Retinol ($244 at Myer) is throwing out the preconceived rulebook and sees for the first time retinol combined with vitamin C. The revolutionary formula comes as a total multitasking game changer for your skin. It also shows Lancôme’s leading innovative abilities to be able to blend safely previously unthought-of ingredients together.

The serum is dispensed from three separate chambers, only mixing once applied to your skin to give you rejuvenating retinol results, combined with the brightening effects of vitamin C, along with an extra treat of hydrating, skin-supporting x-peptides added to the mix.

The post Suddenly, Celebrities Are Getting Candid About Their Cosmetic Surgery appeared first on marie claire.

It will likely come as no surprise to hear that, as many celebrities do, Khloe Kardashian has had some work done. But now, she’s chosen to speak openly about exactly what she’s had done to her face.

There’s been endless speculation, side-by-side comparisons and surgeon-led explainers over the years, particularly directed at the Kardashian family’s faces and bodies. Much of which has been met with deafening silence – until recently.

In the past month both Kris and Kylie Jenner have gotten candid on social media about surgery and cosmetic procedures. The latter, surprising followers by replying to a fan’s request for details on her breast implants to take to her own surgeon.

After years of women denying that cosmetic intervention is to thank for their youthful appearance – further fuelling unrealistic beauty standards amongst women – suddenly, the veil of secrecy is being lifted. Why now?

kardashian family pose in gowns at christmas

“We’ve moved from secrecy and stigma to empowerment and ownership,” US plastic surgeon, Dr Lara Devgan, told People

“Today’s public figures are reclaiming their narratives, acknowledging that looking beautiful often involves intention, planning and professional help from expert surgeons.”

It was again speculation over the 41-year-olds appearance by London-based aesthetic doctor Jonny Betteridge breaking down the procedures he believed Khloé might have had, that saw her reveal the details.

Khloe Kardashian Reveals Plastic Surgery & Cosmetic Procedures

Undoubtedly our favourite of the Kar-Jenner clan, Khloe cleared up any confusion with her typical no BS demeanor.

“I take this as a great compliment! I think these photos are about 15 years apart, but here’s a list of things that I have done,” she wrote in response to the video.

She went on to reconfirm she has had a nose job, and a bevy of other treatments that we legally cannot print here.

Ultimately, the choice to have work done and share the details is a personal preference, but the growing shift around transparency is a welcome one to (so very) slowly breaking down unrealistic beauty standards.

This Brand New Skincare Formula Contains All The Trending Acids https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/what-acid-is-right-for-you/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 01:07:21 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1284518 From A to Z

The post This Brand New Skincare Formula Contains All The Trending Acids appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

When it comes to solidifying your skincare routine, incorporating active ingredients such as acids is a must. Sure, the term ‘acids’ sound a little daunting, but we promise these face-saving ingredients are a must for your routine. The acids found in your skincare line up are designed to ensure your skin is left looking and feeling it’s best.

But how do you decide which acid will work the best for your skin? Without a skincare guide on hand, it can be difficult to traverse the skincare aisles. Our top tip? Start by assessing your skin concerns. Then, do your research. And if you happen to be dealing with blemish-prone, adult skin, we’ve gone and done it for you.

Which Acid Is Right For You?

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a true shining star in the skincare ingredient world. The trending ingredient has seen a recent escalation in popularity, with many across social media showcasing its benefits.

If you’re new to azelaic acid, you’ll soon see why it’s a must-have once you’ve experienced all it has to offer. Not only does it help to neutralise free radicals, through gentle exfoliation, it will work to reduce the appearance of blemishes and address any uneven skin tone concerns.

Hyaluronic Acid

This powerful humectant is genuinely quite hard to avoid in the skincare world, and for that, we’re eternally grateful. But what really is hyaluronic acid? Well, this active ingredient works by binding to your skin, attracting and retaining water — up to 1000 times its own weight — to boost your hydration levels.

How do you benefit from increasing your skin’s moisture level? Well, not only will you see a stronger skin moisture barrier, but you’ll also notice a difference in how plump and firm your skin can appear.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA for short), which acts as an exfoliant, gently buffing away dead skin and build-up. The gentle yet powerful acid is able to encourage skin cell turnover while helping to unclog pores. It can even help with blemishes past and present.

But how is it going to help you with your blemishes? Well, the powerful acid is able to help balance your oil levels (also known as sebum control) associated with your current breakouts and even working to fade the appearance of post-blemish marks.

Can you apply multiple acids at once?

Absolutely you can apply multiple acids at one time. But the most important thing to remember is that not every acid will play nicely together. Our two top tips are to either oscillate between your actives in a skin-cycling routine or find a singular product that’s going to answer all your skin concerns.

And while finding a singular product to address all your problems is a massive ask, La Roche-Posay, the French answer to just about all skin solutions, may have just done it.

la roche posay effaclar AZ gel cream acid formula

If you’re dealing with blemish-prone adult skin, along with the inevitable signs of ageing, then this latest launch will be your skin-saving hero. The La Roche-Posay Effaclar A.Z. Gel Cream ($65.95 at La Roche-Posay) is a seriously lightweight (read: fast-absorbing) moisturiser designed to hydrate and exfoliate simultaneously.

The tri-acid formula incorporates trending azelaic acid, hydrating hyaluronic acid and salicylic acid to work to address your blemish-prone skin concerns. You’ll likely be seeing a noticeable difference in blemishes, post-blemish marks, and even those fine lines, all from applying this one sensitive skin-friendly cream.

Kris Jenner Surprised Fans By Revealing Details Of Her Past Plastic Surgery https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/what-has-kris-jenner-done-to-her-face/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 04:54:44 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1282194 When every celebrity starts to look the same, what happens to real women?

The post Kris Jenner Surprised Fans By Revealing Details Of Her Past Plastic Surgery appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
We need to talk about Kris Jenner’s face. In Paris recently, Jenner quietly soft-launched what appears to be one of her most polished looks yet. The 69-year-old matriarch of reality television’s first family stepped out looking not just radiant – but almost unrecognisably youthful.

Her slicked-back hair, oversized blazer, and sunglasses were classic Kris. But the porcelain-like cheeks, taut jawline, and glow-from-within skin were, well, new. Very new. So new, in fact, that some fans mistook her for daughter Kim Kardashian.

“She definitely saw Lindsay Lohan’s surgeon!! That facelift did her some good justice,” wrote one Instagram user. Another added: “I thought that was Kim! She looks INCREDIBLE 😍🔥🙌.”

And just like that, Jenner’s fresh face became the latest talking point in the ongoing debate around ageing, aesthetic culture, and beauty standards in the influencer age.

What Procedure Did Kris Jenner Have?

To be clear, Kris Jenner isn’t doing anything the rest of Hollywood isn’t already doing – she’s just doing it better. At least according to the internet.

Speculation ranges from a surgical facelift to more subtle interventions. Now, Kris Jenner has revealed exactly what work she’s had done… not this time around, but in the past.

Following suit from daughter Kylie, who revealed this week the exact details of her boob job, the momager also spilled the surgery tea, revealing she had a facelift had done 14 years ago.

Commenting on an Instagram post from Surgeon, Garth Fisher, Kris wrote: “You did my first facelift in 2011… 14 years ago!!! and made it the most amazing expereince ever.”

It’s clear that Jenner’s latest refresh has been meticulously planned and while we don’t have as much detail, we do know who was responsible.

A rep for Jenner told Page Six: “We can confirm that Dr. Steven Levine did Kris Jenner’s recent work.”

We weren’t given any further details on exactly what procedures Dr. Levine performed on Jenner, but you can bet we immediately began googling the New York City-based surgeon.

According to his website, “Dr. Levine, a board-certified plastic surgeon is known for his unique ability to customize the most contemporary surgical techniques. Facelift, rhinoplasty, eyelid rejuvenation (lower blepharoplasty and upper blepharoplasty), body contouring, and breast augmentation and reduction.”

For a woman whose entire brand revolves around maintaining image – not just her own, but her family’s – this glow-up is business strategy as much as beauty philosophy. Which raises a bigger question – why are we still surprised when older women in the public eye refuse to age on anyone else’s terms?

Kris Jenner. Image: Instagram

The Kardashian Effect – And The Cultural Whiplash It Causes

Of course, this isn’t Kris Jenner’s first time in the beauty crosshairs. The Kardashian-Jenner family has long been accused of moving the aesthetic goalposts. Whether it’s the rise of Brazilian Butt Lifts or the arrival of Ozempic-thin red-carpet silhouettes (cue Kim on the carpet at the Met Gala in 2024), there’s no denying that the family has influenced what women think they should look like.

Few have spoken more openly about this than British actress and activist Jameela Jamil, who’s previously called out the Kardashians for promoting unrealistic body ideals. From waist trainers to appetite-suppressing lollipops, their influence isn’t just aspirational – it’s commercial.

Speaking on Rylan Clark’s How To Be… podcast, she pointed out the media’s complicity – and ours.

“We’re the ones who click on these celebrities, we’re the ones who give them algorithmic attention, we’re the ones who buy the magazines that have them on the cover. So the media is only ever going to supply what we demand.”

In short, if Kris Jenner is the poster girl for ageless beauty, it’s because we made her one.

The Psychology Of Perfect Faces

There’s something unnerving about the way all celebrity faces seem to be converging into one… lifted, sculpted, poreless. It’s as though there’s a single AI-generated template for what “good” looks like – and everyone’s chasing it. Jamil put it bluntly:

“Even if [celebrities] are different ages, different heights, different ethnicities, they’ve all got the same bodies – so that must be the correct body. And [people think] there’s something wrong with me because I don’t look like that.”

Now it’s not just bodies, but faces too.

The result is a kind of aesthetic homogeneity that can be deeply damaging, especially to younger audiences. We consume these images daily, often without question, and then internalise them as goals. If even 69-year-old women are expected to look 40, what chance do the rest of us have?

Where Do We Go From Here?

Kris Jenner’s face is her business – and she’s running it well. But as the beauty world reacts to her new look, it’s worth asking why we still find transformations like hers so jarring. Is it envy? Admiration? Or is it something more unsettling – a collective anxiety about ageing, invisibility, and the lengths we’re willing to go to avoid both?

If Jenner’s glow-up proves anything, it’s that the beauty standard hasn’t softened. If anything, it’s become more demanding – youth, but not too obvious; tweaks, but not too extreme; perfection, but still natural.

For many women, that’s not just unrealistic – it’s exhausting.

So yes, Kris Jenner looks great. But maybe the more interesting question isn’t what she’s had done – but why we still expect women, especially famous ones, to look untouched by time. And more urgently, what it costs us to keep playing along.

The post Why Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel Is the Moisturiser I Keep Returning To appeared first on marie claire.

There are certain things in my beauty cabinet that I happily invest in. A beautifully blended foundation that doubles as skincare, a perfume that makes me feel expensive, a brow gel that won’t budge during an afternoon Pilates class. But when it comes to moisturiser – the humble, twice-a-day essential – I’m surprisingly frugal. I’ve tried the best. And yet, the one jar I always come back to is a quiet achiever: Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel

While it may not come with a designer price tag or reside in a frosted glass jar with gold foil, this water gel hybrid does precisely what it says on the jar – and then some. For dry-skinned girls like myself (the kind who are perpetually chasing that dewy, post-facial glow), it’s nothing short of a revelation.

What Makes It So Good? Let Me Count the Ways

At first swipe, you’ll notice the texture: cooling, jelly-like, almost pudding-y. It glides over the skin like silk pyjamas and sinks in instantly, leaving not a hint of grease – just the kind of plumped, glassy finish usually reserved for editorial shoots or Korean skincare commercials. The star of the show? Hyaluronic acid. The Water Gel delivers a hefty dose of it, drawing moisture into the skin and holding it there like a sponge. I’ve found it particularly useful under makeup -the perfect canvas for a sheer skin tint or even nothing at all.

Then there’s the packaging. No-nonsense, yes, but delightfully chic in its own quiet way. The transparent blue pot reminds me of a Balearic holiday – cool, clean, and completely unfussy. It also lets you see exactly how much product is left, which (in a household with multiple users and a small child who thinks moisturiser is finger paint) is more helpful than you’d think.

And let’s not forget the most important factor: it works. Whether I’m navigating the recycled air of the office or braving the elements during a windswept school run, my skin feels hydrated and comfortable. It doesn’t flake, it doesn’t tighten, and it doesn’t scream out for another layer. In short, it delivers, consistently.

Neutrogena® Hydro Boost® Gel-Cream
Neutrogena® Hydro Boost® Gel-Cream, $38

A Formula That Plays Well With Everyone

The brilliance of the Hydro Boost Water Gel is in its universality. It’s fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and suitable for all skin types. My best friend, who’s acne-prone and suspicious of anything even remotely rich, uses it post-retinol without a single breakout.

It’s also worth noting that the Hydro Boost range now comes in a few different formulations: a nourishing cream, a thicker Hyaluronic Acid Night Cream, and this, the Water Gel (formulated with extra-dry skin in mind). I stick firmly with the latter. Not only because my skin laps it up, but because it’s as versatile as it is dependable.

The Verdict? Don’t Let the Price Fool You

At $38, Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel is cheaper than most gels. But it behaves like a product ten times the price. It hydrates, soothes, layers, and primes. It’s my go-to on no-makeup days and my secret weapon beneath foundation. Most importantly, it’s the one cream I’ll actually finish, and – perhaps more telling – I’ve repurchased multiple times.

In a world where skincare is increasingly expensive and complicated, there’s something comforting about a product that simply does its job – and does it beautifully.

How Richard Parker’s Rationale Revolutionised Skincare with Topical Nutrition https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/richard-parker-rationale-skincare/ Tue, 27 May 2025 07:05:18 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1282760 The science of glow

The post How Richard Parker’s Rationale Revolutionised Skincare with Topical Nutrition appeared first on marie claire.

For over three decades, Richard Parker has quietly reshaped the skincare landscape – not by chasing trends, but by combining his background as a chemist and classical musician to craft formulations that protect, repair, and celebrate natural beauty. From healing his own sun-damaged skin to pioneering personalised rituals backed by genetic insights, Parker’s Rationale brand has become a global beacon of innovation and radiant skin. Here’s why his approach to “topical skin nutrition” is the must-know secret for your healthiest glow yet.

Richard Parker, founder of Rationale
Richard Parker, founder of Rationale. Image: supplied.

The Start

I was a competitive swimmer through high school and university, so by my early twenties I had serious sun damage from constant outdoor training. Once I qualified as a chemist, I was able to experiment on my own skin, identifying active ingredients and creating formulations that were able to [target] the sun damage and help protect my skin from further solar damage. I discovered that 80 per cent of facial ageing is caused by the sun so I decided to dedicate my career to developing the most advanced formulations for solar protection and repair. Those early experiments became the basis of the Rationale Essential Six Formulations.

Prescribed Rituals

The Essential Six is like the perfect diet or nutritional plan for skin. It consists of topical vitamins, minerals, proteins and lipids that help protect skin during the day and repair at night. Three steps in the morning to help with immune, antioxidant and solar protection, and three steps at night to support the skin’s barrier, a healthy pH level and rejuvenation. We call this concept “Topical Skin Nutrition”.

Creative Synergy

Music and chemistry both involve creative problem-solving, resulting in a physical manifestation of beauty. The commitment to the daily discipline of research, experimentation, determination and sheer hard work are common to my training as a formulation scientist and a classical musician. One strengthens the other, and I am so thankful for this synergy that has enabled me to create so many industry innovations.

The Ethos

Healthy, glowing skin is achievable at any age, but it’s a moving target. The effects of the environment, genetics and age all play a part and need to be factored into your customised regimen. Rationale deploys genetic testing [via a buccal swab] to discover your inherent strengths and weaknesses then creates a customised skincare ritual to meet all your skin’s needs. But the end result is always our signature glow!

Must-try

I usually like to start new clients on #1 The Serum and #6 The Night Crème for overnight repair.

The Highlight

Every day, clients write to tell me about their skin transformation and the positive change in their lives when their skin glows with health. It’s my most treasured reward.

The Frontier

Our clients expect perpetual innovation and upgrades of their Rationale formulations and treatments. We evaluate the medical evidence for new ingredients and devices and incorporate these into our offerings. Two recent examples are the upgrade of our iconic #6 The Night Crème with three forms of vitamin A and the introduction of our EpiNova Express Facial that delivers visible improvements in just 45 minutes for those who are time poor and need rapid results.

Hailey Bieber Swears By This Beauty Hack – But Does Ice Face Dunking Do Anything? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/face-dunking-ice-water-benefits-hailey-bieber/ Mon, 12 May 2025 21:32:23 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1281028 A quick glow-up

The post Hailey Bieber Swears By This Beauty Hack – But Does Ice Face Dunking Do Anything? appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
By now, you’ve probably seen the viral clip – Hailey Bieber dunking her face into a bowl of ice water before the Met Gala. While it might have seemed like an impromptu beauty hack, face dunking is having a serious moment – and it’s not just about achieving that red-carpet glow. So what exactly are the benefits of face dunking?

From beauty experts to neuroscience researchers, ice-water face immersion is being hailed as a quick ritual with surprising benefits – all backed by science. In her book Smarter, wellness educator Emily M. Austen calls it “the best way to reset before a big event or stressful day.” Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner (both of whom have been spotted reading Austen’s book Smarter), and Jennifer Aniston are reportedly converts.

So, what’s behind the cold splash, and why is it becoming everyone’s go-to self-care hack

What Are The Benefits Of Dunking Your Face In Ice?

Before we answer that, let’s start with what Hailey Bieber likely had in mind – that instant glow. Ice water can help reduce puffiness, calm redness, minimise pores, and tighten skin – all essential steps before applying makeup. The cold temperature boosts circulation, delivering a healthy, radiant flush to the skin, making it appear firmer and more even.

But face dunking isn’t just about skin-deep benefits. According to Emily M. Austen, face dunking can “stimulate the vagus nerve, a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system,” which is responsible for relaxation and stress regulation. Austen explains that this stimulation can help calm the body, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation.

But that’s not all. Dunking your face in ice water also triggers the diving reflex – a natural physiological response where the body slows down heart rate and redirects blood flow to vital organs, helping to conserve energy and oxygen in aquatic environments. Austen points out that “this reflex can lead to a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure, contributing to feelings of calm and relaxation.”

What Are The Brain-Boosting Benefits Of Ice Face Dunking?

Cold exposure has also been linked to the release of mood-boosting neurotransmitters like dopamine and endorphins. The shock of cold water isn’t just waking up your skin – it’s firing up your brain. Austen suggests that this type of cold therapy can help improve focus, reduce procrastination, and alleviate anxiety in the moment.

“The practice of dunking your face in ice water may offer a quick way to activate the body’s stress response and reduce anxiety,” Austen notes. Plus, the cold sensation itself offers a form of sensory distraction, helping to pull you out of a heightened state of anxiety and back into the present moment.

How Long Should You Submerge Your Face In Ice Water?

To try face dunking at home, simply fill a clean bowl with cold water and ice cubes. Dunk your face for 10-15 seconds, breathe deeply, and repeat if you’d like. Some people swear by doing this first thing in the morning, while others use it as an energy reset mid-afternoon. If you’re not up for full immersion, an ice roller or chilled face cloth offers a gentler version.

Essentially, if you’re looking for a quick fix to calm your mind, shrink your pores, and channel your inner Hailey Bieber, all you need is a bowl, some ice, and a good splash.

Wondering What Your Skin Barrier Is? marie claire Spoke To A Dermatologist To Find Out  https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/la-roche-posay-skin-barrier/ Mon, 12 May 2025 07:04:23 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1280424 The top tips to supporting and protecting your skin…

The post Wondering What Your Skin Barrier Is? marie claire Spoke To A Dermatologist To Find Out  appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

If you’ve recently taken a scroll through any beauty sites, you’ll have been inundated with articles telling you to take care of your skin’s moisture barrier. But what exactly is the skin barrier and why is it so important?

Well, to answer these important questions, marie claire chatted to Dr Kate DeAmbrosis to deep-dive into not only what the skin barrier is but also how to support, protect, and repair it.

What is the skin’s moisture barrier?

While you might have some vague idea about what your skin’s moisture barrier is, dermotologist Dr DeAmbrosis is here to explain it in full. “The skin’s moisture barrier is the outermost layer of skin with the important job of maintaining your skin’s condition, vitality and protection from external elements,” Dr DeAmbrosis says.

Dr DeAmbrosis states that she considers the moisture barrier as a shield working as a barrier to any potential irritative threats. Making sure your skin’s moisture barrier is strong is important for keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy.

What is moisture loss?

To understand moisture loss, you’ll first need to know about the three layers that form your skin barrier.

As a collective, these three main “layers work together to protect the body from excessive water loss, avoiding [signs] of premature ageing from environmental stressors and maintaining overall skin health”.

Layer one: The top, outermost layer of the epidermis is called the stratum corneum. Its main function is to act like a brick wall, maintaining hydration by preventing water loss while at the same time stopping any potential irritants from entering. The building blocks (AKA cells) that make up this layer are ceramides, cholesterol and lipids).

Layer two: The epidermis is the middle layer that essentially works to support the top layer.

Layer three: This is the all-important microbiome layer – it’s a microorganism-supporting layer that is pivotal in maintaining the skin’s moisture barrier.

Dr DeAmbrosis tells us that moisture loss occurs when the “outer layers become compromised by corneocyte breakdown or lipid loss.” This means that the layers are no longer able to retain water leading to flakiness, dryness, tightness, sensitivity, redness, breakouts and irritation. Some potential causes of this irritation include environmental factors, hot water (which can strip the skin), harsh cleansers, ageing and over-exfoliation.

What are some steps to help protect, repair and support your skin barrier?

What are the steps to take to help protect, repair and support your skin’s moisture barrier?

Well, Dr DeAmbrosis suggests looking for products that contain vitamin B5, — also known as pantothenic acid — glycerin and microbiome-nourishing prebiotics.

While also taking steps to making sure you are moisturising your skin consistently, using a pH-balanced creamy gentle cleanser and most importantly wearing sunscreen (and following sun safety guidelines; slip, slop, slap, seek and slide).

Following this simplified routine — especially when you notice signs of damage — is the best way to support and repair your skin’s moisture barrier. Opting to use a gentle cleanser and increase your moisturising routine by including a rich, heavy occlusive balm such as La Roche-Posay’s Cicaplast Baume B5+ ($42.95 at Adore Beauty).

]]>
A few years ago, we could only dream about some of the treatments and skincare products available today. Now, we are looking for non- invasive procedures with minimal downtime as well as skincare that delivers results.

To keep up with the very latest, I go to as many educational clinical conferences as possible. I recently attended a conference by ASCPD (the Australian Society of Cosmetic Procedural Dermatologists), which was chock-full of amazing new arrivals. I have handpicked the ones that got me really excited.

EMFACE

Firstly, EMFACE has just introduced its EMFACE Eyes applicator for treating under the eyes. This was always a problematic area of the face to treat because of the fine texture of the under-eye skin. It now makes three different applicators that are available to treat the full face and neck as well.

EMFACE is a hands-free treatment that requires four clinic visits of 20 minutes each, once a week for a month. The results are amazing, simultaneously treating muscle and skin using radiofrequency and HIFES TM. energy to revitalise areas of the face.

EMFACE Eyes improves the overall look of the face and smooths the appearance of fine lines. It is recommended that the EMFACE treatment is repeated every 12 months to maintain the result. There is little downtime post-treatment.

This treatment is available in-clinic only and the product is not available for sale to the general public.

UltraClear Laser-Coring

Next was UltraClear Laser-Coring, offering laser and fractionating rejuvenation using 3D MIRACL and 3D IntelliPulse technology. This technology gives greater efficacy and improved safety in this laser device.

It provides a fast, comprehensive solution to multiple skin concerns through to supporting collagen production. It can administer a light laser peel with almost no downtime, or help to revitalise and rejuvenate the look of the complexion with a longer downtime for a more damaged skin.

The treatment, which takes up to 30 minutes, was recently awarded Best Non-Surgical Treatment for Younger Looking Skin by New Beauty Awards.

This treatment is available in-clinic only and the product is not available for sale to the general public.

Rejuran

Rejuran Skin Boosters was another cutting-edge piece of technology on display. It is a micro-needling treatment that enhances skin rejuvenation. It combines polynucleotide (PN) with micro-needling techniques to promote skin rejuvenation.

PN is derived from wild salmon DNA and is able to increase collagen production and skin elasticity. It helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven skin tone and acne scarring. There is some downtime depending on the level of damage being treated.

This treatment is available in-clinic only and the product is not available for sale to the general public.

Why You Still Need Skincare

You may be thinking, well I don’t need active skincare if I use these amazing treatments. Wrong. One of the guest speakers at the conference was Dr Frank Lin, a cosmetic plastic surgeon from Melbourne. He has two clinics but his EST clinic offers only skincare and non-surgical treatments.

According to Dr Lin, healthy skin is the foundation of all aesthetic treatment, surgical and non-surgical. “There is little doubt that high-quality professional-grade skincare elevates all treatment modalities,” he says, which is why the skincare brand SkinCeuticals is his EST clinic’s skincare partner.

Every one of Lin’s patients receives a comprehensive skincare program specifically tailored to their skin’s needs to support their cosmetic enhancement journey, through the treatment process, recovery and beyond.

Skinceuticals

At the conference, SkinCeuticals introduced its latest offering, HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan, a serum targeting volumising and plumping. To address the appearance of fine lines, it contains 1.3% pure hyaluronic acid and 12% proxylane, which is a sugar protein hybrid. The skin looks plumped and rehydrated for 24 hours after application.

Hyaluronic acid is one of those wonder ingredients that is found naturally in many areas of the body, including the skin. It is often referred to as a water magnet for its apparent ability to draw moisture into it. HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan is free of parabens and fragrance and can be used by all skin types.

Alastin Skincare

Alastin Skincare, the skincare brand in the Galderma Cosmetic enhancement treatment family, was also introduced at the conference. It’s a small range of daily restorative skincare and post-cosmetic enhancement treatment products. There are only six products in the bespoke range, which is based on a multi-blend of peptides using Tri-Hex technology.

Serums are best used at night and any other moisturisers and creams should be used on top. Serums generally have a smaller molecular structure so are absorbed much more effectively into the skin.

As the skin experiences a full thickness skin regrowth every six to 12 months, for best results use your skincare regularly for long enough to see an improvement. Using a skincare product for a month and then stopping will never give you the full benefits.

Make sure that you have a consult with a cosmetic enhancement clinician rather than deciding what treatment and products you like. This way you will be given the right treatment and skincare plan.

Dry, Dull, and Tired-Looking? Here’s How to Get Your Skin Winter-Ready https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/winter-skincare-glow/ Tue, 06 May 2025 06:55:07 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1280325 Get your winter glow on

The post Dry, Dull, and Tired-Looking? Here’s How to Get Your Skin Winter-Ready appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
As the temperatures drop, your skin might start acting up – think dryness, redness, and that annoying dull look. The good news? Now’s the perfect time to switch up your skincare game and get to know your winter skincare ingredients a little better. We asked Clare O’Connor, senior research scientist at No7 in the UK, to break down exactly what your skin needs during winter – and the best ingredients to get results.

“Summer and winter challenge the skin in very different ways,” says O’Connor. “In summer, we deal with excess oil, breakouts, and sun exposure. But winter brings cold air, indoor heating, and low humidity, which strip the skin of moisture and can lead to flakiness and irritation.”

Her advice? Start prepping now if you want your glow back by summer. “Give your skin at least one full cycle – around four weeks – to show visible improvements,” she says. “Look for products that target hydration, radiance, tone, and texture. You’ll also see a reduction in fine lines and excess oil when you’re consistent.”

What Are The Best Skincare Ingredients for Winter?

The combination of cold air outside and artificial heating inside creates the perfect storm for skin stress. Humidity levels plummet, moisture evaporates more quickly from the skin, and you’re more likely to experience irritation, redness, and flakiness.

With all of this in mind, if you want to do skin repairs, the winter months are the best time. This is because “some actives that we use to drive changes to our skin appearance can also lead to a greater sensitivity to sunlight,” explains O’Connor, who lists alpha-hydroxyacids (AHAs) and retinol as active ingredients that may bring on sensitivities. “This makes winter [with its reduced sunlight] an ideal time to … introduce these [skin rebooting] actives into your routine.”

But it’s not just about actives. Switching to richer formulations is also important, as this can help keep skin hydrated and protected against the elements. “A richer facial moisturiser and night cream, along with your regular serum, reduces the impact of skin dryness and aids the appearance of fine dehydration lines and skin turnover,” says O’Connor. “[Moisturiser helps with] radiance, so it should always be incorporated into any winter skin reset.”

Cold air, wind chill, and indoor heating all strip the skin of moisture, so layering hydrating products becomes essential. Think of it as giving your skin a protective winter coat – one that seals in hydration and strengthens the barrier over time.

Peptides 101

If you find retinol difficult to tolerate, we have a solution. Peptides can make a very good substitute. “While retinol will tackle many skin issues, there are some great alternatives, like peptides,” explains O’Connor.

What Are The Benefits of Peptides?

“Peptides are small fragments of proteins that can act as signalling molecules to help support skin repair,” says O’Connor. “The unique peptides within the No7 Future Renew Repair Serum signal to the skin to encourage the production of structural proteins, leading to an improved look.”

“No7’s unique peptides are designed to improve [the look of] multiple signs of skin damage, including lines, wrinkles, loss of radiance … and uneven texture,” explains O’Connor of No7’s new peptide range.

Also enlist the help of a serum. “As the mode of action for peptides is to [help support skin] from within, using a format that absorbs quickly is most effective,” says O’Connor. “Serums often contain the highest concentration of actives.”

“Now’s the time to introduce skin rebooting actives into your routine.”

Is Drew Barrymore The Most Natural Woman In Hollywood? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/skincare/drew-barrymore-plastic-surgery/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 04:51:31 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1279339 It sure seems so

Conversation around the cosmetic work of the celebrity set is louder than ever. From instagram accounts dedicated to before and after pics to the onslaught of critique that comes anytime an A-lister steps out looking slightly more snatched, it’s increasingly difficult to escape the pressures to look perfect and defy aging.

What often makes these unachievable standards worse is an unwillingness to talk about having said work done. Thankfully, there are celebrities like Drew Barrymore, who remind us that aging is a beautiful process–and one we should be okay discussing.

Drew Barrymore On Avoiding Plastic Surgery

During an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the host and actress was asked by an audience member what her secret to aging gracefully was.

“I haven’t done anything and I want to try and stay that way,” she told the crowd.

“But I also am like, do whatever works for you. The only thing I do know is don’t judge other people because they do things differently. We’re all on our own path and we have to support each other.” She went on to add that she had insecurities, but was more focused on accepting them than trying to change them.

“I see a lot of turkey neck or I have a lot of other times where I’m like ‘Oh Wow, we’re there now.'”

The Charlies Angels actress, now 50, is undeniably one of Hollywood’s most beautiful stars, inside and out. She went on to tell her audience how important she’s found it is to be kind to yourself, hinting that it is her secret to staying so youthful.

“I want to tell myself not to be so mean to myself. I cannot believe the first thing we say and do when we look in the mirror. How many beautiful moments do we even get the privilege of seeing our reflection and that person looking back at us is us?”

“So the kinder, more patient, more resilient, more loving, embracing, less dismissive that we can be, the better it is for our mental game and spiritual game, which affects the face,” she said.

It’s not the first time Barrymore has spoken about her resistance to going under the knife (or needle). In late 2023 she told People: “I have a highly addictive personality, so I worry I’d continue to chase it, get this and that done.”

“That scares me, just because of my own approach to things. So, I’m waiting on making any alterations.”

She then added: “I look forward to seeing what I look like as a leather bag in the future!”

Anne Hathaway’s Face Is Trending – But Why Are We Still Policing Women’s Appearances? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/anne-hathaway-face-trending-beauty-standards/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 02:32:49 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1278916 The internet is spiralling

The post Anne Hathaway’s Face Is Trending – But Why Are We Still Policing Women’s Appearances? appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Anne Hathaway is trending again – not for a performance, not for a new role or award season buzz – but for her face. You see, when she recently attended the Ralph Lauren fall 2025 show in New York, she was glowing. Like, seriously glowing. Naturally, social media has questions.

Like… ‘Why does Anne Hathaway look younger?’ or ‘How does Anne Hathaway still look so good?’

Google queries are climbing, and headlines are once again obsessing over her age-defying beauty. But buried beneath the fascination lies a deeper question: why are we still so intent on scrutinising women’s appearances, especially when they dare to look good while ageing?

What Does Anne Hathaway Do For Her Face?

Hathaway’s skin doesn’t just glow by accident. Her long-time facialist, Su-Man, once revealed the Oscar-winner’s surprisingly simple but consistent skincare routine. Every day, Hathaway reportedly massages her face, puts on a mask, and applies SPF 30 – no exceptions.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped the internet from spiralling.

“Glowing, Sculpted, Effortlessly Refreshed”. An Aesthetic Expert Weighs In

Dr. Jonny Betteridge, a London-based aesthetic doctor recently shared his professional (and highly speculative) insight into how one might look to mimic Hathaway’s ageless look on Instagram. “She’s glowing, sculpted, and effortlessly refreshed without ever looking ‘done’. Anne is the poster girl for refined beauty work where non-surgical meets surgical to enhance, not change, her natural features,” says Dr. Betteridge.

“Anne Hathaway is living proof that aging can be intentional, elevated and undetectable.”

Still, he emphasises: this is purely speculative. “I have no personal knowledge of any treatments Anne Hathaway may or may not have had.”

The Anne Hathaway Syndrome

This isn’t the first time the internet has spiraled over Hathaway’s looks. Last year, when The Idea of You trailer dropped, headlines declared that she was too hot to play the role of a forty-year-old single mum.

It’s known as the Anne Hathaway Syndrome. Coined in 2015, it describes a paradox where a woman who seemingly “does everything right” – works hard, looks the part, wins awards – is still punished for it. As The New York Magazine asked: Why do women hate Anne Hathaway (but love Jennifer Lawrence)? We’re also wondering.

“It does get to me… I know my own mind and I am connected to my own feelings,” she told Vanity Fair last year.

Embracing Herself

That Vanity Fair profile highlighted Hathaway’s recent evolution. After giving up alcohol, becoming a mother, and turning 40, she began embracing her true self – both publicly and privately.

“This is the first time I’ve known myself this well,” she said. “I don’t live in what others think of me.”

She’s also shifted her aesthetic: bold colours, edgy silhouettes, Met Gala slays. Donatella Versace called her “dangerous but sexy.” On screens, she’s embracing roles that defy ageist expectations, like her portrayal of a sexually empowered 40-something in The Idea of You

“People were advising me that I armor myself and keep a distance, and that I have two selves.… I don’t do it that way.”

She’s not hiding. She’s evolving.
