The post The Long, Lived-In Fringe Is The Chicest Hair Update Of 2026 appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

I’ve always been intrigued by a fringe, but hesitant to commit. The appeal is obvious; the permanence less so. A haircut you can’t quietly grow out without entering an awkward, forehead-dominating phase.

Enter: the long, lived-in fringe, a style that feels less like a declaration and more like a suggestion, and one I’ve already seen everywhere in 2026.

Miley Cyrus debuted hers at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Ariana Grande followed at the 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards. Daisy Edgar-Jones is currently wearing a soft, sweeping version on set of her upcoming heist film Here Comes The Flood. Consider this less coincidence, more quiet consensus.

Long, lived-in and deliberately undone, this fringe is effortless, feathered and quietly transformative.

The length and density can be customised to suit most face shapes, and it works just as beautifully on fine hair as it does on thicker textures. In other words, it’s forgiving, flattering and refreshingly low-commitment – the holy trinity of modern hair decisions.

Tempted? Here’s what you need to know.

What Is The Long, Lived-In Fringe?

The extra-long fringe may be enjoying a moment, but it is hardly a novelty. In truth, it is one of fashion’s most reliable sleights of hand: a way to recalibrate your look without committing to a full aesthetic overhaul. For decades, it has been quietly favoured by those seeking a considered shake-up rather than a dramatic reinvention. Subtle, yes, but never accidental.

So what defines a long, lived-in fringe? Think of it as a modern offshoot of the butterfly fringe, designed to frame the face without feeling overly considered. It is not boxy or immaculate, never so precise that it looks styled within an inch of its life.

Ideally, it is cut to fall in soft, delicate sections, skimming the forehead and cheekbones rather than forming sharp lines or rigid structure. The emphasis is on texture, movement and air.

The result is framing rather than covering, movement rather than structure, and a finish that feels deliberately undone.

What Face Shape Suits A Long-Lived In Fringe?

The appeal of this style is in its flexibility, with density and length tailored to suit almost every face shape.

It softens the forehead on heart-shaped faces, creates balance on longer face shapes, and introduces movement where it’s needed most. Better still, it works across hair types, sitting just as naturally on fine strands as it does on thicker textures.

How To Style A Long-Lived In Fringe At Home

Styling should be minimal. A quick round-brush blowdry or even air-drying with a touch of texture spray is often all this fringe will need.

For a more separated finish, prep the hair with something lightweight, like Living Proof’s Restore Perfecting Spray before building texture with Living Proof’s Full Dry Volume + Texture Spray to give definition and hold without stiffness.

The hair growth category is surging, as hair loss evolves from a taboo topic into a booming business. In Australia, the hair restoration market is projected to reach $400 million by 2030, growing around 10 per cent a year. Once dismissed as a concern solely for men or post-partum women, thinning hair is now being recognised among younger generations.

“Up to 90 per cent of men and nearly 50 per cent of women will experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime,” says Dr Michele Squire, scientist and founder of Qr8 Mediskin, adding that the emotional impact can’t be underestimated. “In one study, 40 per cent of women reported marital problems and career difficulties they attributed to hair loss.”

Christopher Chu, Aveda’s head of education, says, “Frequent heat styling, tight hairstyles and chemical processing can weaken hair.” Pollution, hormones and even weight loss can also play a role.

All that considered, it’s safe to say that the hair-growth industry will continue to, well, grow. Here’s what’s new and what’s next.

Scalp In Focus

“Think of the scalp as the soil from which your hair grows,” says Chu. “Supporting the scalp’s health with revitalising treatments helps create optimal conditions for healthy hair growth.” Brands like Aveda, Nioxin and Typebea are using biotech-powered complexes and actives to fortify and aid hair strength.

Try: Aveda Miraculous Oil High Shine Hair Concentrate, $64. Nioxin Hair Booster Serum, $121, at adorebeauty.com.au. Typebea G1 Overnight Boosting Peptide Hair Serum, $80.

“More than 50 per cent of hair can be lost before thinning becomes visible”

Daily Dose

Supplements aimed at supporting strand strength are increasingly popular, helping to tackle deficiencies linked to excessive shedding. While not a quick fix, they can work to address underlying issues such as low iron, zinc or vitamin D – all linked to poor hair quality and increased breakage. Many formulas include collagen to support growth from the inside out. “Nutritional deficits are a major contributor, particularly for women,” says Squire. However, she adds, “prevention lies in early identification and consistent, evidence-based treatment”.

Try: Bouf Flouf Factor Growth Supplement, $39.95. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Aveda Miraculous Oil High Shine Hair Concentrate, $64. Calecim Professional Advanced Hair System, $550. Nioxin Hair Booster Serum, $121, at adorebeauty.com.au. Typebea G1 Overnight Boosting Peptide Hair Serum, $80.CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet, $1159. Bouf Flouf Factor Growth Supplement, $39.95

Let’s Get Clinical

For those wanting professional support, in-clinic options are evolving rapidly. Microneedling and platelet-rich plasma treatments can help stimulate dormant follicles, while prescription platforms like Qr8 Mediskin offer personalised formulas supported by doctors. “It’s a luxury- medical hybrid,” Squire explains of Qr8. “Precision care, plus safety and convenience.” She also emphasises the importance of early intervention. “More than 50 per cent of hair mass can be lost before thinning becomes visible, so seeking help as soon as possible is essential.”

Try: Qr8 Mediskin hair regrowth; qr8mediskin.com.

Turn On The Lights

As Chu notes, hair health is now viewed as an extension of self-care, as technology offers more options. Light therapy has moved from the clinic to at-home devices for skin and, more recently, hair and scalp, with LED helmets and combs using low-level light therapy to stimulate follicles and improve hair density. But while a high-tech device for daily use is appealing – particularly for the time-poor – results rely on consistent use, so be realistic about your time commitment.

Try: CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet, $1159.

Hormone Shifts

Shedding can ramp up during life stages such as perimenopause and menopause. “A decline in estrogen and progesterone can make hair follicles more sensitive to DHT, a hormone known to shrink and weaken follicles,” says colourist Simon Bright of Sydney’s Jonny & June salon. Bright uses the six-week Calecim Advanced Hair System program, which employs stem cell ingredient PTT-6.

Try: Calecim Professional Advanced Hair System, $550.

Jordan Mylius: “Resilience And Mindset Are Everything” https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/jordan-mylius-hairification/ Thu, 04 Dec 2025 10:06:10 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1500841 Jordan Mylus, founder of Hairification shares how he created a multi-million dollar company in under two years.

The post Jordan Mylius: “Resilience And Mindset Are Everything” appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

With runs on the board working in the self-tanning industry, Jordan Mylius saw a gap in the haircare market two years ago. He has turned it into a global winner.

He shares with Marie Claire his insights into the beauty business and what it takes to be successful.

Where It Began

When I started Hairification in 2023, my vision was clear: bring the science and results of premium skincare into haircare, and make it accessible to everyone. Accessibility and efficacy are our brand ethos.

Skincare had gone through a revolution: consumers could access proven, active-rich products at all price points. But haircare was lagging. It was confusing, often overpriced, and lacked the kind of efficacy people were starting to expect. I saw a clear opportunity to create a results-driven, science-first haircare brand that belonged on everyday supermarket shelves without compromising on performance or design.

The Brand’s USP

What sets Hairification apart is our ability to merge clinical-grade efficacy with mass accessibility. We use active ingredients at percentages backed by clinical studies and we build efficacious formulations that are free from sulfates, parabens and silicones.

Our H24 Mask became Priceline’s #1 performing hair mask in three months, and we’ve ranked in their top 10 shampoo and conditioner brands in under two years. Consumers trust us because they see faster growth, stronger hair and better scalp health.

Standout Moments

There have been so many pinch-me moments. Launching Hairification nationally in Coles from day one was huge – I went into the meeting with
a concept and samples, and left with a deal. Another highlight is seeing Hairification surpass $20 million in revenue in under two years, making us the fastest-growing haircare brand in Australia.

As was expanding into the UK, Ireland and South Africa, with Europe and the UAE on the horizon. Those moments remind me why the early grind was worth it.

Hairification H24 Complex Hair Repair Blonde shampoo and conditioner, $25 each.

What It Takes To Be A Beauty Founder

Resilience and mindset are everything. Every day I wake up and tell myself Hairification will be a huge success. That mindset keeps me moving forward, no matter the challenges. I’m also naturally curious. It’s that mix of discipline, optimism and constant learning that fuels me.

Best Advice

The best advice is to nail your fundamentals: know your cost of goods, your wholesale margins, your RRP. Without a commercially viable model, it doesn’t matter how good your branding is, you won’t scale. That discipline has shaped every decision we make at Hairification.

I’d tell my younger self to back himself more. At 22, I bought my first salon, and while I was ambitious
I didn’t always realise how much I was capable of. I’d say: take the risk, trust your gut and don’t worry about not having celebrity ties or big financial backers. Hard work, creativity and resilience take you a very long way.

Lessons Learnt

I’ve discovered that I thrive under pressure. The early days were a race against time to hit retailer deadlines, and even now, with global expansion, the stakes are higher than ever. But I’ve learned I can balance calculated risk-taking with resilience, and that
I genuinely love the challenge.

What’s Next

In the immediate future we’ve just launched an H24 Complex Hair Repair Blonde shampoo and conditioner with Priceline exclusively. We’re also extending our hugely popular H24 Complex Repair range with a new conditioner.

How To Get Your Hair Into Balance https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/how-to-get-hair-into-balance/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 03:28:01 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1497394 If flakes or redness are keeping you from your best hair, here's your route to lusciousness

The post How To Get Your Hair Into Balance appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
In case you didn’t get the memo, scalp health is the latest frontier in the quest for shiny, healthy hair. No longer something to slip furtively into your basket at the pharmacy, scalp-care products are out and proud, and ready to help our poor, distressed tresses.

The truth is that a red, inflamed or itchy scalp can be the result of many factors – and it can affect just about all of us at some point. From a build-up of products or too many sweat sessions at the gym, to diverse factors such as stress, hormones, weather or ageing, scalp issues can feel like they come from nowhere.

Why Is My Hair Flaking?

What’s happening at cell level is usually an impaired skin barrier. Just like the skin on our face and body, if the barrier is compromised, skin will become red and inflamed and will possibly feel irritated when products go onto it.

“Flakiness or redness is commonly caused by things like dermatitis triggered by excess oil, or by contact dermatitis,” says Nicole Kae, creative director of hair-care brand Evo. “This is typically a reaction to products with high levels of fragrance or preservatives. But even weather plays a big part. So does stress.”

An impaired barrier can present in a number of skin issues, some of which seem at opposite ends: from flakiness and dryness to itchiness, irritation and oiliness.

“When your microbiome – your scalp’s ecosystem – is imbalanced you’ll notice quite a lot of change in your scalp,” explains Kae.

EVO Head Start Scalp Exfoliator

How Can I Fix A Sad Scalp?

A great place to begin repair is with a hair expert. They can take you through what will work for your hair type and scalp issue.

“In salon, I will always recommend a scalp exfoliation,” says Kae, who likes to use a combination of Evo’s Head Start Scalp Exfoliator and the brand’s professional scalp treatment, Top Drop Scalp Concentrate (which is only available in salon). “I pair that with a good massage to help the blood flow.”

There are things you can do at home, too. “Keep your scalp happy by not over-washing, especially with harsh products,” says Kae. “But on the flip side, don’t under-wash, because too much oil can feed the problem.”

Kae recommends washing two to three times a week, using lukewarm water and Evo’s Common Ground Scalp Shampoo, which helps tackle an out-of-balance scalp. Next, she suggests following up with a hydrating product like Evo’s Ground Control Scalp Treatment. Both are from the brand’s new scalp collection. “Don’t be shy to massage the product to activate blood flow,” says Kae.

EVO Ground Control Scalp Treatment.

Exfoliating the scalp works much the same as it does with your face: by removing dead skin cells, excess oil and product build-up. So make sure you do that once or twice a week, then follow with a balancing treatment such as Evo’s Home Base Scalp Serum. Dosed with cooling and calming peppermint and eucalyptus leaf oils, Evo’s scalp-focused collection works synergistically to help restore balance, support the skin barrier and reduce redness and irritation.

Other Routes To A Healthy Scalp

But it’s not all down to your bathroom routine – lifestyle factors also count when getting head and hair in harmonious balance.

“Keep your stress in check and get enough sleep,” recommends Kae. “Also incorporate scalp massage into your routine and get enough of the right nutrition in your diet by eating foods rich in protein, omega 3s and vitamins. And the big one is plenty of hydration: drink all that water!”

The Hair Tools Actually Worth Investing In This Black Friday https://www.marieclaire.com.au/shopping/best-hair-styling-tools/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 02:09:25 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1295175 For red carpet worthy hair...

The post The Hair Tools Actually Worth Investing In This Black Friday appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
There’s no denying it: Sabrina Carpenter’s hair has become a cultural moment in its own right.

Between the bouncy blowouts she sported on the Short n’ Sweet tour, and her long, curly locks in her Manchild music video, it’s safe to say we’re obsessed. So forgive us for trying to replicate her look at home.

The Best Hair Styling Tools To Shop During Black Friday, According To marie claire:

Unfortunately, we don’t have access to the same glam squad and Miss Carpenter, so we’re left with the next best thing: hair styling tools.

I know, I know — not quite the same. However, the right hair tools can save you a lot of money in the long run. And once you master how to use the Airwrap? The world is your oyster!

From cult classics to clever new releases, we’ve rounded up the best hair styling tools that really deliver — so you can get big hair energy, minus the big effort.

The bonus? Black Friday is just around the corner, so it’s a great time to invest in a professional-grade hair tool. Most (if not all) of these styling tools will be heavily discounted, which makes it the smartest time to purchase.

Of course, if you’ve heard of the Airwrap, you’ve heard of the Shark FlexStyle — the tool that starts as a powerful hair dryer, flexes to a versatile multi-styler. It’s recently had a powerful upgrade and now boasts 1,650 Watts for a powerful and versatile hair styling.

It still comes with auto wrap curler attachments, a styling concentrator and oval brush so you can achieve salon-quality results at home.

It would be remiss of us to write about hair styling tools and not include the Dyson Airwrap. The latest release — the Co-Anda 2x™ Multi-Styler And Dryer — features a new AirSmooth2x™ finishing attachment, as well as the curling barrels, volumising brush and fast dryer that the original airwrap offered.

Compatible with the Dyson app, this 6-in-1 styling tool really does it all — and without heat damage.

If we’re talking about Dyson hair tools, the Aistraight also comes in at the top of our list. Straightening as it dries the hair, this tool uses air (not heat) to straighten, meaning reduced frizz and flyaways. The bonus? No hot plates to accidentally burn your fingers on.

The Airstraight also provides exceptional shine, with glass bead thermistors that regular airflow up to 16 times per second, and help to maintain the hair’s natural shine.

If you’re wanting a 2-in-1 hair tool but aren’t looking for a super straight finish, the GHD Duet Blowdry Brush is the answer to your prayers. Transforming the hair directly from wet to a perfectly-styled blowout, this tool heats the elliptical-shaped barrel plate and bristles rather than the strands of your hair, ultimately minimising the damage.

Limited to 120°C, the Duet offers consistent low temperatures for a frizz-free, voluminous blowout with minimal effort.

It wouldn’t be a styling-tool round-up without a mention of Cloud Nine’s Original Iron — the straightener that’s become a cult classic. Beloved for its mineral-infused ceramic plates and temperature control, this iron glides through hair to create a glassy finish with less damage.

But don’t be fooled by the name: yes, it straightens like a dream, but it also bends, flicks and curls with ease — making it a true multitasker.

Meet the brush that makes the blow-dry basically foolproof. The BondiBoost Infrared Thermal Bounce Brush combines ceramic barrels with infrared technology to lock in shine while minimising heat damage. The result? Smooth, bouncy strands that look like they’ve just stepped out of the salon.

Designed for both volume and polish, the large round barrel lifts at the root while the vented body speeds up drying time. Bonus: the handle is lightweight, so your arms won’t be aching before you’ve even finished the back sections.

When it comes to big, glossy waves, Mermade is the name on everyone’s lips — and their latest M Infrared Waver is designed to deliver them with extra shine. Featuring infrared technology, this three-barrel styler works by heating the hair from the inside out, reducing frizz and damage while creating those signature mermaid-worthy waves in minutes.

Lightweight and easy to use, it’s built with multiple heat settings so you can tailor your look to your hair type — whether you’re chasing soft bends or full Hollywood ripples.

What Hair Tools Will Be On Sale For Black Friday?

Most major styling brands will have deals this Black Friday, and often these are the biggest discounts offered throughout the year. Whether you’re considering investing in Dyson or Shark, it’s a great time to splurge on the hair tools you’ve been eyeing off.

Do All Hair Styling Tools Cause Heat Damage?

Thankfully no. Technology has come a long way, and these days, we’re treated to hair tools that limit heat damage. Ceramic plates, ionic airflow and adjustable heat setting are designed to minimise breakage.

How Do I Choose The Right Hair Tool For Me?

It all comes down to your hair type and goals. If you have thick, frizz-prone hair, you might look for a good quality hair straightener, whereas if you have thinner or flat hair, you might prefer a volumising blowdry brush.

Are Expensive Styling Tools Worth It?

Not always, but sometimes it is worth spending the money. Higher-end styling tools usually mean faster drying, longer-lasting results and less heat damage. That said, there are plenty of affordable options (and great sales) to look out for.

Here’s How To Achieve Summer’s Hottest Colours At-Home https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/summer-2025-at-home-hair-colour/ Thu, 13 Nov 2025 22:46:53 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1496268 No missing out on fresh hair here...

The post Here’s How To Achieve Summer’s Hottest Colours At-Home appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
The summer season is upon us, and usually that means a trip to the salon to refresh the strands and get ready for the warmer weather. But if you’re feeling the pressure of the rising cost of living, dropping a few hundred dollars at the salon is probably the last thing you’d want to do.

But just because an expensive salon visit is out of the question doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve the season’s trending tones from the comfort of your own home. Jaye Edwards of Edwards and Co gives us the inside scoop on all the colours we can expect to see this summer season. And with the help of Clairol, we will show you how to achieve the look for a fraction of the price.

At-Home Summer Colour

Glassy Brunette

clairol summer glassy brunette

A huge trend at the moment is ‘lived in’ healthy hair. Edwards has been seeing a “big shift towards glossy, light reflecting brunettes. Think hair that radiates health and that ‘expensive’ finish.” To recreate the glossy tone at home, you’re going to want the perfect toned brown, courtesy of Clairol’s Nice’n Easy in ‘Natural Medium Brown’ ($9.99 at Chemist Warehouse). With the brand’s ColourSeal Conditioning Gloss worked into the formula, you’ll be seeing shimmering, glossy colour and silky soft strands from the get-go. The key to keeping the ‘glassy’ finish is to maintain your hair hydration with a good in-shower wash routine, and top up your root colour with the easy-to-blend Clairol Root Touch up in the same colour ($13.99 from Chemist Warehouse).

No Bleach Bronde

clairol no bleach bronde summer tone

A bleach-free colour is the perfect way to add long-lasting (and easily maintainable) dimension. Edwards suggests this colour is for “naturally light brown clients wanting a pop of warmth and dimension.” Opting for the blending, toning and highlighting Clairol Nice’n Easy in ‘Natural Dark Blonde’ ($9.99 from Chemist Warehouse) will give your tresses those moments of sun-kissed warmth while still being easy to maintain.

Buttercream Blonde

clairol buttercream blonde

You can’t go past a summer season without seeing an influx of blondes. The rumours are true, they really do have more fun. So, with that in mind, take your strands to a fresh, vibrant tone this summer. Edwards tells marie claire that ‘Buttercream Blonde’ is “defined by its dimension, darker roots and pops of brightness at the front, creating a luminous blonde”. Our favourite aspect of this colour is how easy it is to achieve. Normally, taking your hair blonde can take several harsh tries before nailing the perfect colour and tone. But with the deeper roots, you can simply brighten the mid to ends of your hair with the Clairol Nice’n Easy in ‘Light Beige Blonde’ ($9.99 from Chemist Warehouse). Bonus points if you also pick up Clairol Frost & Tip Blonde Highlighting ($20 from Woolworths) to add the brightening face-framing pieces.

Why You Need Peptides In Your Haircare Routine https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/nak-revive-peptide-haircare/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 03:08:25 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1498040 Help strengthen hair and repair damage in just one treatment.

The post Why You Need Peptides In Your Haircare Routine appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
There are products that slot seamlessly into your day – the reliable cleanser, the time-saving dry shampoo – and then there are game-changers that alter the way you think about self-care forever. NAK Hair’s K.REVIVE Peptide Leave-In Power Mask is firmly in the latter camp.

The premise is simple enough: a leave-in formula that works harder than your average mask, tackling invisible – and often cumulative – effects of damage. We’re talking colouring, styling, sun, pollution, even the occasional “why did I do that?” phase with bleach. Most of us don’t realise just how much our hair endures daily, until suddenly it shows: breakage, dullness, an inexplicable refusal to shine.

Luckily, this new recruit steps in like a reset button. What sets it apart is its peptide technology. Peptides have long been the preserve of high-performance skincare, the heavy hitters in serums promising plumpness, bounce and repair. To see them now in haircare feels both overdue and very welcome. In this formula, they don’t just coat the hair, they penetrate and bind, mimicking natural proteins often stripped from our strands. It’s clever science, with great results: softness that’s not slippery, shine that doesn’t feel synthetic.

I first applied it with my usual scepticism – I’ve been promised “instant transformation” countless times. But the texture is lightweight, almost serum-like, which sets it apart from the heavy, oil-laden leave-ins of old. Worked through towel-dried lengths, it disappeared without residue, as though my hair drank it in. Next morning, strands felt less brittle, more elastic, with a rare combination of smoothness and body.

Over the weeks, the ends – usually my weak point – looked sharper for longer between cuts. Colour felt more luminous. Even blow-drying time shortened, the brush gliding without the usual snag-and-tug routine. For someone who views styling as both ritual and chore, that felt revolutionary. Another surprise was the price – along with its 24 biomimetic peptides that increase efficiency, the mask is far better value than some less effective alternatives on the market.

NAK K.REVIVE Peptide Leave-In Power Mask

But beyond the sensorial pay-off, what I love about K.REVIVE is its simplicity. It respects the way women actually live with their hair. We don’t all have time for 10-step rituals or hour-long masks. We need products that deliver results in the background while we get on with our day.

”We all want the same thing: to reverse the heat, colour and chemical damage and reclaim our healthy hair,” says Hannah Cash, CMO at NAK Hair. “That’s why we’re so excited about our game-changer, K.REVIVE. It’s simple and effective, clinically proven to repair and strengthen hair by up to 97 per cent in just two minutes.”

This mask isn’t about chasing a fantasy ideal. It’s about restoring hair to its truest, healthiest self. Consider it the hair restorer your tresses didn’t know they were waiting for.

In this formula, peptides don’t just coat the hair, they penetrate and bind, mimicking the natural proteins

With runs on the board working in the self-tanning industry, Jordan Mylius, the beauty founder of Hairification, discovered a gap in the haircare market and turned it into a global winner with his budget-friendly haircare brand, hairification.

How It Started

When I started Hairification in 2023, my vision was clear: bring the science and results of premium skincare into haircare, and make it accessible to everyone. Accessibility and efficacy are our brand ethos.

Skincare had gone through a revolution: consumers could access proven, active-rich products at all price points. But haircare was lagging. It was confusing, often overpriced, and lacked the kind of efficacy people were starting to expect. I saw a clear opportunity to create a results-driven, science-first haircare brand that belonged on everyday supermarket shelves without compromising on performance or design.

Hairification Brand founder Jordan Mylius. Photography Sevak Babakhani.

What’s Special About The Brand?

What sets Hairification apart is our ability to merge clinical-grade efficacy with mass accessibility. We use active ingredients at percentages backed by clinical studies and we build efficacious formulations that are free from sulfates, parabens and silicones. Our H24 Mask became Priceline’s #1 performing hair mask in three months, and we’ve ranked in their top 10 shampoo and conditioner brands in under two years. Consumers trust us because they see faster growth, stronger hair and better scalp health.

There have been so many pinch-me moments. Launching Hairification nationally in Coles from day one was huge – I went into the meeting with a concept and samples, and left with a deal.

What It Takes To Become A Beauty Founder

Resilience and mindset are everything. Every day I wake up and tell myself Hairification will be a huge success. That mindset keeps me moving forward, no matter the challenges. I’m also naturally curious. It’s that mix of discipline, optimism and constant learning that fuels me.

The best advice is to nail your fundamentals: know your cost of goods, your wholesale margins, your RRP. Without a commercially viable model, it doesn’t matter how good your branding is, you won’t scale. That discipline has shaped every decision we make at Hairification.

Hairification H24 Complex Hair Repair Blonde shampoo and conditioner, $25 each

Lessons Learnt

I’d tell my younger self to back himself more. At 22, I bought my first salon, and while I was ambitious I didn’t always realise how much I was capable of. I’d say: take the risk, trust your gut and don’t worry about not having celebrity ties or big financial backers. Hard work, creativity and resilience take you a very long way.

I’ve discovered that I thrive under pressure. The early days were a race against time to hit retailer deadlines, and even now, with global expansion, the stakes are higher than ever. But I’ve learned I can balance calculated risk-taking with resilience, and that I genuinely love the challenge.

What’s Next?

In the immediate future we’ve just launched an H24 Complex Hair Repair Blonde shampoo and conditioner with Priceline exclusively. We’re also extending our hugely popular H24 Complex Repair range with a new conditioner.

The Must-Have Hot Tools For Holiday Hair https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/silver-bullet-holiday-hair/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 02:52:02 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1498119 Get your hair looking sleek, frizz-free and sophisticated fast

The post The Must-Have Hot Tools For Holiday Hair appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
During the Holiday Season, the need to look put-together can come around more often that usual. This season, we are trending towards hair styles that look relaxed but with some clear effort involved. To get you there, we round up four must-have hot tools to get your hair looking sleek, frizz-free and sophisticated. Here are the tools and tips you need to know (you can thank us later).

Silver Bullet Fastlane Titanium Curling Iron, $109.95.

Curling Tong

Every hairstylist has a curling tong in their kit. Why? It’s the best way to create everything from glamorous waves to defined curls and loose, beachy texture that lasts. Even heat distribution and the ability to adjust the heat setting for your hair type is key.

Silver Bullet SuperStar MultiStyler, $349.95.

Multitasking Hot Tool

If time is short, buying a tool that does it all makes sense. “The dryer attachment can replace the need for multiple tools,” says Tanya Nelson, who nominates Silver Bullet’s Superstar Multi-Styler. Using aerodynamics to create bouncy curls, “the brush attachment will dry and style at the same time and is great when you need a style refresh”, she says. Plus, the directional curl attachments will create loose to defined curls without heat damage.

Silver Bullet Titanium 230 Supernova Hair Straightener in Rose Gold, $279.95.

Straightening Iron

A straightening tool is worth the investment. “For everything from humidity-resistant, pin-straight hair to luxury waves and bouncy curls, this is my absolute go-to styling tool,” says Tanya Nelson, national educator for Silver Bullet. Aside from plate width and glide-ability, seek a tool that provides temperature control. “This is one-pass styling,” says Nelson of Silver Bullet’s Titanium 230 Supernova Hair Straightener. “It’s fast to heat up and ensures even styling.” The tool allows you to select low, medium or high temperatures – and conveniently remembers your preference for next time.

Silver Bullet Black Velvet Paddle Hair Brush, $31.95.

Paddle brush

An essential hair tool, a paddle brush ticks a lot of boxes. It can detangle and smooth without snagging, but make sure you recruit one with heat-resistant bristles, like this professional model from Silver Bullet. Plus, its ceramic base keeps frizz at bay.

Why You Need To Be Thinking ‘Skinification’ For Your Hair https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/how-to-skinify-hair/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 00:42:17 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1293689 The key to transforming your tresses

The post Why You Need To Be Thinking ‘Skinification’ For Your Hair appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

The ‘skinification’ trend has well and truly taken over our feeds, ultimately transforming the way we view our hair and body care. The trend looks at how we care for our skin, not just on our face, but everywhere else.

For our hair, caring for our scalp as skin is key to seeing improvement, whether that be longer, stronger strands or if you’re looking to rid yourself of an oily, flaky scalp. Dr Leona Yip shares some of her insights into why ‘skinification’ is the trend worth adopting.

Why Should You ‘Skinify’ Your Scalp

Much like the rest of our face and bodies, our scalp is actually skin. Sure, it’s easy to forget our scalp’s needs when we’ve gotten so used to our simple shampoo and condition routines.

Video: Supplied

If healthy, shiny strands are at the forefront of your wishes, then start with your scalp. Properly looking after your scalp can encourage not only hair growth, but it can also work to improve your scalp health, which in turn addresses any scalp concerns you may be having.

Dermatologically Backed Haircare

Finding a haircare routine that’s backed by science and dermatologists alike is key to having the hair of your dreams. Much like you choose active ingredients for your face, it’s time to start incorporating them into your hair wash routine. Dr Yip tells marie claire “just like when you choose skincare products, it’s important to remember that active ingredients alone are not enough. You also need to consider product formulation and scientific innovations to determine whether the product will work well to target your scalp concerns.”

Look for ingredients such as salicylic acid and selenium disulphide to target the likes of buildup, oils and dandruff.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) that works as a gentle exfoliant. For your scalp, that means banishing buildup and opening up your hair follicles to allow for healthy, clean growth. And, as Dr Yip tells us, “it’s safer to use a chemical exfoliant than to scrub your scalp. Salicylic acid can unclog the skin pores and remove skin cell debris.”

Selenium Disulphide

Found in many dandruff shampoos, this antifungal, antiseptic active targets the source of flaky concerns and works to rebalance your scalp’s bacterial properties.

Dercos Anti-Dandruff DS Shampoo

$29.99 at Priceline

dercos ds shampoo for dry hair

This dermatologically recommended shampoo is here to disrupt the dandruff market. Clinically proven to treat dandruff at the core, the shampoo offers relief from itching and irritation while eliminating up to 100 per cent of visible dandruff from the first wash*.

The shampoo features a unique formula with dermatologically backed actives — selenium disulphide and salicylic acid — designed to ensure your scalp’s microbiome is balanced, without causing any additional irritation of its own. These ingredients have earned their spot in the formulation with their science-backed results.

Due to its balancing effects, the Dercos Anti-Dandruff DS Shampoo is suitable for daily use and is even gentle on sensitive skin. Plus, with a pleasant fragrance and easy-to-use texture, the formula will leave your strands looking refreshed. Unlike other dandruff shampoos, Dercos combines the worlds of cosmetics and dermatology to provide scalp-supporting products that are also going to keep your hair looking and feeling the absolute best.

Key features:

 • Pleasant scent
 • Dermatologically recommended
 • Sensitive skin-friendly
 • Non-irritant formula
 • Visible results from first use

Available at:

$29.99 from Priceline

My Hair’s Three-Minute Makeover with TYPEBEA https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/my-hairs-three-minute-makeover-with-typebea/ Mon, 22 Sep 2025 06:08:21 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1294024 Finally, hair that forgives past mistakes.

The post My Hair’s Three-Minute Makeover with TYPEBEA appeared first on marie claire.

I’ll admit it: my hair has been through things I’d rather forget. Endless straightening, a fling with Sun-In as a teen (if you don’t know what that is, you’re far younger than I am. It was basically cheap bleach that turned your hair orange not blonde), and now, as an adult, years and years of being a “natural” blonde. My strands have seen it all – colour, bleach, humidity, heat, split ends. Like most of us, I’ve been forever chasing that elusive combination of strength and shine – hair that looks glossy and effortless.

So when TYPEBEA – the performance-led haircare brand co-founded by global artist Rita Ora and beauty entrepreneur Anna Lahey – dropped a new Repair Range, I was first in line. Rita says it best: “My hair’s been through it all – blow dries, bleach, back-to-back shoots, you name it. We built TYPEBEA to grow stronger strands from the roots, and now our new Repair range takes hair health one step further. It’s our root-to-tip philosophy in action, giving you hair that’s stronger, shinier and truly resilient. I’m so proud of this next evolution.”

Meet your new bathroom cabinet icons: TYPEBEA’s Repair Range. A four-piece, bond-building toolkit designed to reverse heat, colour and styling damage - leaving hair resilient, glossy and touchably soft.
Meet your new bathroom cabinet icons: TYPEBEA’s Repair Range. A four-piece, bond-building toolkit designed to reverse heat, colour and styling damage – leaving hair resilient, glossy and touchably soft.

Why Repair, Why Now?

According to TYPEBEA, over 60% of women report concerns about hair damage, while 71% struggle with dry, frizzy strands thanks to heat styling, colouring and environmental stress. And then there are those of us who can’t seem to grow hair past a certain point because of breakage. TYPEBEA’s new four-step Repair system sets out to help restore strands to near-virgin state. Think 80% less breakage and 52% stronger hair after one use.

The technology at its core is RDS Bond Technology – exclusive to TYPEBEA – a powerhouse combination of:

 • Repair: hydrolysed keratin (91% homologous to human hair).
 • Defend: encapsulated antioxidants (Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E) to shield from UV, pollution, and split ends.
 • Shine: banana, pineapple and cacao extracts to add hydration and deliver 37% more gloss – without the brittle feel protein-heavy formulas can cause.

Anna Lahey says: “Hair damage is so prevalent. Almost 60% of women are concerned about heat styling, colouring and chemical treatments, and dry and frizzy hair is the number one concern globally. Developing our Repair range was no small feat, but with RDS Bond, we’ve built a unique multi-layered approach to repair. It’s a true performance system, designed to transform hair in just one use.”

Root-to-tip revival: TYPEBEA’s Repair Range harnesses RDS Bond Technology to restore hair close to its virgin state - stronger, shinier, and visibly repaired after just one use.
Root-to-tip revival: TYPEBEA’s Repair Range harnesses RDS Bond Technology to restore hair close to its virgin state – stronger, shinier, and visibly repaired after just one use.

The Four-Step Routine

Step 1: R•1 Pre-Wash Damage Repair Mask

This is your weekly pre-game treatment. Creamy and cushiony, it soaks in before you even touch shampoo. You smooth it onto damp or dry hair, chill for a bit, then rinse. It penetrates all three levels of the shaft, softening and hydrating, preventing tangles, and sealing the cuticle for frizz-free resilience.

Step 2: R•2 Damage Repair Shampoo

This isn’t your usual squeaky-clean shampoo. It’s pH-balanced, so it gently lifts excess oil and build-up while protecting strands when they’re at their weakest – wet. Expect soft, volumised roots, enhanced slip, and a noticeable increase in shine after just one wash.

Step 3: R•3 Damage Repair Conditioner

Thick but weightless, it’s a dream detangler. It deeply nourishes, smooths, and addresses split, damaged ends without heaviness. Squalane is the secret here: frizz is clinically reduced by 29%. I loved how my hair felt: hydrated, bouncy, never limp.

Step 4: R•4 Intense Repair Leave-In Treatment

The finale, and honestly, my favourite. Post-shampoo, you skip conditioner, towel-dry until damp, then work 1–3 pumps through (depending on your hair). Leave it in for just three minutes – don’t rinse — and style as usual. It’s high-performance, powered by RDS Bond, and after one use hair looks and feels smooth, glossy, and properly healthy.

The Results

I’ll get to the point – the transformation was immediate. My hair felt bouncier, more resilient, more glossy – but crucially, not crunchy, the way some protein-heavy treatments leave it. Instead, it felt touchable. Light. As if the years of bleach, colour, and heat styling had been rewound.

Like TYPEBEA’s cult G•1 Overnight Boosting Peptide Serum – the #1 hair serum at Sephora and a multi-award winner that supports growth from the root – the Repair Range is about giving hair its full length and strength potential. Together, they’re a root-to-tip revolution.

And because it’s Certified Clean at Sephora, free from sulphates, silicones and parabens, it’s suitable for all hair types.

If TYPEBEA’s Growth Serum was a root revolution, then the Repair Range is its perfect partner – a root-to-tip rescue mission. For me, it’s proof that the right formula really can undo years of styling sins in just three minutes.

So yes, my hair has been through it all. But it finally feels like it’s come out the other side – shinier, stronger, and far less regretful about that Sun-In phase.

Blonde Kate Middleton Has Entered The Chat – And Yes, She Looks Incredible https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/kate-middleton-blonde-hair-2025/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 04:12:26 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1292623 Her boldest look yet

The post Blonde Kate Middleton Has Entered The Chat – And Yes, She Looks Incredible appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
It’s not often that Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, manages to eclipse her own royal agenda – but last week, she did exactly that. Forget the Natural History Museum gardens, forget the damp London drizzle. All eyes were locked on the Princess’s hair, which debuted in the most dazzling new shade: a honeyed, sun-bleached blonde that’s instantly rewriting autumn’s beauty mood board.

Yes, you read that correctly. Kate Middleton, famous for her glossy, chestnut waves – the same ones that have spawned a thousand “Chelsea blow-dry” appointments – has gone full blonde. Not bronde. Not caramel. Not even “just a touch of balayage.” This is blonde with a capital B. Think creamy wheat at the roots melting into ribbons of gold, amber, and honey. It’s fresh, it’s radiant, and, dare I say, it’s downright luminous.

Blonde Kate Middleton
Blonde Kate Middleton. Image: Instagram

A Royal Flip Of The Script

Traditionally, September is the month when many of us retreat back to darker shades – swapping iced coffees for oat flat whites and highlights for lowlights. But not Catherine. She’s flipped the script entirely, lighting up autumn with a shade usually reserved for beach holidays and Aperol spritzes. And it’s exactly the kind of playful, optimistic energy we didn’t know we needed from the royals.

Even her styling spoke volumes. Rather than the safe, softly tonged waves we’ve come to expect, her hair was dialled up to maximum volume. Lift at the roots, bounce through the lengths, and an extra curl or two that gave the whole look a sense of movement and fun. Rain or no rain, that hair had presence.

Is Kate Middleton’s Hair A Wig?

In short: no. While a few online commentators suggested her golden locks looked “too perfect” to be real, hair experts and royal stylists agree this is all Catherine. The Princess has famously thick, glossy hair, and her blonde transformation was achieved with skilful colouring – not clip-ins or wigs. The volume and body seen at the Natural History Museum were simply the result of a masterfully executed blow-dry, paired with fresh, dimensional highlights that catch the light. Far from a wig, it’s proof that the right shade and style can be every bit as transformative as a brand-new accessory.

Blonde Ambition – Or Blonde Revolution?

Royal hair watchers (yes, they exist, and yes, they are forensic) are calling it her boldest change since she introduced the “big chop” lob in 2015. But this feels different. This isn’t about a small tweak or an “evolution.” This is about Catherine embracing transformation. Coming back from an undeniably difficult year, the symbolism of a fresh colour isn’t lost on anyone. Sometimes a haircut is just a haircut – and sometimes it’s a reset.

And the people noticed. Social media was flooded with comments: “Honey blonde looks good on the Princess of Wales,” wrote one fan. “You are gorgeous, Kate. A true princess. You can wear anything and change your hair in any style and colour.” Another supporter added: “Your new hair is beautiful… if I ever go through chemotherapy, may I look as wonderful as you.”

Of course, in true internet fashion, not everyone was in full agreement. There were murmurs of “I think she looks best with darker hair.” But even those comments were peppered with compliments: “truly lovely either way.” Because here’s the thing: when it comes to the Princess of Wales, the consensus is clear – she radiates beauty regardless.

Why Blonde, Why Now?

We don’t know for certain, but the timing feels telling. Catherine has returned to public duties after a summer of recovery and rest. The blonde feels less like a style experiment and more like a message: brightness, strength, renewal. A way of stepping into autumn not just as the Princess of Wales, but as a woman unafraid of change.

There’s also the simple fact that she looks incredible. The honey hue flatters her complexion, softens her features, and feels refreshingly modern – less traditional duchess, more contemporary icon.

As one fan perfectly summed it up: “Catherine is beautiful, however she decides to wear her hair. That’s the fun of it.” And honestly? We couldn’t agree more.

How To Get Perfect Party Hair Every Time https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/party-hair-shark-beauty/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 05:19:25 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1291179 With pops of colour and style for days, we round up nine looks for curls and waves to celebrate our 30th anniversary in style

There’s nothing more striking than glorious curls or a bold wave, and a diffuser is the key to defining them. Madison Voloshin, celebrity stylist and hair director for Shark Beauty, tells how to get them and keep them. “Starting with Oribe Curl Control Silkening Crème, I worked with the natural texture of Soleil [pictured left] by diffusing it using the Shark FlexStyle with the diffuser attachment. For Summer’s hair [right], I used the diffuser again then ran my hands through the lengths to keep her natural curl looking effortless.”

Beauty note: Nothing says party like a statement lip. Apply a bold shade, keeping the rest of the face clean and fresh. Brush blush over cheeks and nose to up the pretty stakes.

Statement Curls

To really amp up curl volume, Voloshin recommends using the Shark FlexStyle tool twisted into hairdryer mode without an attachment. “I blew in some air to get more volume at the roots – I worked the hair backwards and forwards to really get air in there.” He then popped on the concentrator attachment to “stretch out the hair to make it as big as we could”.

Natural Attraction

Enlist a Mason Pearson brush for this look, then add heat at the root. “We brushed out her hair with a Mason Pearson brush, then I used a little bit of styling cream – the Oribe Featherbalm Weightless Styler,” explains Voloshin. “With the FlexStyle and the concentrator attachment, I added a minimal amount of air to smooth down the roots to keep it as natural as possible.”

Bounce To It

To create big, voluminous curls, targeted heat is required. “I used the Shark FlexStyle with the auto-wrap curler attachment,” says Voloshin, who worked from left to right pinning the curls as he went to keep their volume and hold. “Then I used a little bit of Oribe Superfine Hair Spray to lock it in. When I pulled out the pins, I brushed out the hair with a paddle brush to smooth.”

Chic Sweeps

To comb out Soleil’s curls, Voloshin enlisted the FlexStyle’s wide-tooth comb, which is part of Shark Beauty’s BYO (build your own) FlexStyle range. “I went through using the wide-tooth comb attachment to brush Soleil’s hair as straight as possible.” Beauty note: Add a cream shimmer to your lids, sweeping the colour up towards the brows.

Textured Waves

“Start with a bit of texture spray – I used the Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray,” says Voloshin. “I work with the natural hair, but then mess it up a little by using the Shark FlexStyle with the paddle brush attachment.” Then it’s all in creating volume. “I brushed her natural wave before using the diffuser on the hair and adding more product to give it a lived-in texture so it’s a bit gritty.”

Shine On

Natural waves look so chic paired with styling designed to celebrate. Voloshin rakes his hands through curls to give an air of effortlessness. “After using the diffuser on the FlexStyle on both Summer and Soleil, I added heat at the roots using the concentrator attachment to smooth.”

Hairstylist and Shark Beauty ambassador Dane Wakefield creates bouncy blow-dries to die for. Here are his top tips, non-negotiables and what he has learnt as a salon owner.

Hair Ethos In Five Words

Confident, fun, empowering, expressive and quirky.

On Creating A Blow-Dry With Body And Bounce

shark beauty dane wakefield
Saint Laurent Spring 2025 Runway

I always start by rough drying the hair 70 per cent upside down. This preps the foundation for volume and reduces your styling time massively. My top tip is to always over-direct the hair, which means blow-drying it in the opposite direction to where it naturally falls.

It might feel strange at first, but it creates incredible lift at the roots for that bouncy salon finish. Also, never skip the setting step. Once you’ve dried a section, pop it into a roller or clip it up to cool down in place. This locks in the shape and gives you long-lasting volume.

On Adding Shine

While products such as shine sprays and oils can definitely boost the finish, the real magic comes from sealing the cuticle. That means using your hairdryer to smooth strands in a downward direction, letting the heat gently polish the surface.

A personal fave of mine is the RapidGloss Finisher attachment on the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle High-Velocity Dryer. It instantly smooths flyaways for those high-shine styles.

In The Toolkit

Shark Beauty
Shark Beauty SpeedStyle RapidGloss Finisher & High-Velocity Dryer, $249.99, sharkclean.com.au

I’m obsessed with the Shark SpeedStyle. It’s powerful, super lightweight and gets the job done so quickly. Whether I’m creating big bouncy waves or sleek glossy lengths, it delivers. The best part is: it does it all without heat damage.

Life’s Necessities

Human interaction – 100 per cent. I thrive off connection. Whether it’s chatting with my clients, my team or even strangers, that daily dose of energy and conversation is what fuels me.

On Starting A Salon

I was so ready to begin the journey but signing the lease was definitely the scariest leap. It was terrifying in the best way possible.

On Progress

Professionally, the salon has opened doors I couldn’t have imagined. My name has grown in the industry and I’ve been able to work on amazing projects and connect with incredible people. Personally, it’s made me so much more confident. I’ve learnt to back myself, make tough decisions and take full accountability for everything. It’s been a huge journey of growth.

On Stress Relief

Saunas and ice baths. They are total opposites but together they’re incredible for decompressing. There’s something about the physical reset and mental calm that comes with the contrast. It forces you to be present and is great for de-stressing.

The Non-Negotiables

Being a respectful person. It’s the foundation of every good relationship and creates the kind of environment I want to be in.

Styling: either a bouncy blow out or embracing and enhancing natural texture. And colour would be no-bleach brunettes and muted blondes. We’re all about that healthy hair.

On What Beauty Means

To me, beauty is all about looking and feeling like the best version of you – not anyone else. It’s about embracing your individuality and expressing yourself in a way that feels authentic. My idea of beauty has evolved. It’s not about one type of hair or one standard of beauty, it’s about celebrating every texture, every style and every individual.

I know that true beauty is health, confidence and owning who you are, and I’m so glad the industry is moving in that direction too.

The Best Haircuts For Every Face Shape, According To The Experts https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/best-haircut-for-face-shape-expert-guide/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 05:19:18 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1286921 The no-fail guide

If you’ve ever left the salon wondering why that “It-girl bob” didn’t quite hit the Bella Hadid mark, chances are you weren’t working with your face shape. While the right haircut can’t change your bone structure, it can enhance it – and the difference between lacklustre and life-changing can be as simple as learning to work with your angles.

We asked celebrated stylist and creative director of Salon Her, Michael Kelly, to break down the most flattering styles for every face shape in 2025 – plus how to actually figure out what your face shape is in the first place.

A man sitting on a leather sofa smiling.

How To Find Your Face Shape

Before you start collating inspo pics to show your stylist, take a good, honest look in the mirror – ideally with your hair tied back. Michael recommends tracing the outline of your face on the mirror with a lip pencil or eyeliner to get a better sense of your proportions.

What You’re Looking For

 • Where your face is widest: forehead, cheeks, or jawline?
 • Is your face longer than it is wide?
 • Are your features more soft or angular?

Once you’ve determined the answer to the above, use this cheat sheet to decode your face shape.

Oval = balanced proportions

Round = wider cheeks with soft edges

Heart = broader forehead, narrow chin

Square = strong jawline, equally wide forehead

Diamond = high cheekbones, narrow chin and forehead

Michael’s biggest tip? “Don’t get too fixated on one category. Most people are a blend of shapes. Work with a stylist who sees the nuances in your features and brings out your natural architecture with shape, texture, and movement.”

Best Haircut & Style For Oval Face Shapes

Daisy Edgar Jones Oval face shape

If you’re lucky enough to be the proud owner of an oval face shape, then you’ve got a range of styles and cuts to work with. But, while the options are varied, that doesn’t necessarily mean every style will suit. “Oval faces are incredibly versatile; they can wear almost anything.”

“This face shape is evenly balanced, so it’s all about working with the hair’s natural texture and the client’s personality & their sense of style.”

What To Ask For

 • Blunt-cut bobs with internal layering
 • Low-maintenance shags with movement and curtain bangs
 • Sleek centre parts – “think Daisy Edgar-Jones – a timeless winner.”

What To Avoid

While nothing is strictly off limits, admits Kelly, it’s best to steer clear of overly heavy, face-hugging styles that can obscure your cheekbones.

“You want to show off that naturally balanced shape,” not play it down.

Best Haircut & Style For Round Face Shapes

Lola Young round face shape
Image: Getty

In order to get the most out of shape, opt for height at the crown with soft vertical lengths and strategic layering for movement and shape. “The goal with a round face is to create elongation by adding subtlety to your existing angles,” says Kelly.

“Think our girl Lola Young, her layered and textured look really adds depth to her facial structure.”

What To Ask For

 • Layered lobs with a side part or curtain fringe
 • Pixie cuts with volume up top
 • Long layers that frame the face vertically

What To Avoid

While the urge to replicate the Gracie Abrams bob is one we can all relate to, it’s a cut that doesn’t work for everyone. “Avoid chin-length bobs with no layering,” suggests Kelly. “They can make the face appear even rounder

But that doesn’t mean bobs – or blunt fringes – are off the cards. Instead, he says, make sure the stylist knows how to work with your features to customise the cut to your shape and natural hair type.

Best Haircut & Style For Heart Face Shapes

Jennifer Lawrence Heart face shape
Image: Getty

When it comes to heart-shaped faces, it’s all about balancing the width of the forehead with the narrowness of the chin.

“Styles that soften the upper face while adding volume around the jawline are ideal,” says Kelly, citing Jennifer Lawrence as a great example of this.

What To Ask For

 • Side-swept bangs
 • Soft face-framing layers
 • Mid-length flicked-out cuts
 • Textured bobs with curtain bangs

What To Avoid

Kelly suggests heart shapes should steer clear of styles that add volume at the crown, likewise slicked-back or tight styles that pull away from the face.

“These styles can really emphasise the width of the forehead and make the chin appear sharper,” says Kelly.

Best Haircut & Style For Square Face Shapes

Margot Robbie square face shape
Image: Getty

Angular and pronounced, square face shapes usually carry strong jawlines and broader foreheads. The key to working with these features, says Kelly, lies in softening the angles with layered styles that diffuse the proportions.

“You want cuts that add movement and gentle curves. We love Margot Robbie for these moments.”

What To Ask For

 • Layered mid-length styles
 • Side parts and tousles waves
 • Wispy bangs or a soft curtain fringe

What To Avoid

Unless you’re wanting to emphasise a strong jawline – as is your right and power to you tbh – then avoid blunt bobs that end exactly where the jaw sits.

This can have the effect of accentuating squareness. Likewise, says Kelly “sharp, geometric fringes will compete with already-strong features.”

Best Haircut & Style For Diamond Face Shapes

Diamond face shapes feature high cheekbones, a narrow chin, and often a narrower forehead. The aim is to soften the cheekbones and create width at the forehead and jaw.

“A cut that adds softness around the jaw and fullness through the crown brings gorgeous balance,” says Kelly, who counts Megan Fox and Gracie Abrams as good examples of how to style hair for a diamond shape.

What To Ask For

 • Tousled lobs with side parts
 • Shag-inspired cuts
 • Curtain bangs that open up the face
 • Styles that add fullness at the crown and jawline

What To Avoid

The key to maintaining a balance with the proportions of a diamond-shaped face is to avoid overly narrow styles. Similarly, cuts that tuck too tightly behind the ears, or focus too much volume on the crown can also be ill-fitting for some heart-shaped faces.

“These can make the cheekbones look overly dominant and elongate the face too much,” says Kelly.

What If You Still Can’t Decide?

Best haircut for face shape
Image: Getty

If you’re stuck between shapes (which, honestly, most of us are), it’s less about rigid rules and more about proportion and movement.

Salons are already seeing an increase in clients requesting more natural-style cuts, particularly ones that work with the hair’s inherent flow, rather than against it – just like these examples.

The best kind of haircut is the one that works the best for your hair type, texture and importantly – lifestyle. A haircut is only as good as your ability to style it, and if you’re not able to maintain a high-needs number, then look to your stylist to recommend a cut that can enhance your hair’s individual characteristics.

Whatever your requirements, there’s a style to suit, and armed with this handy guide, your best hair days are on the horizon.

If “natural”, “wearable” and “authentic” describe your dream hair, join the club. Instead of seeking to wrangle hair into the opposite hair type of someone on your feed, in 2025 there’s a shift to easier natural cuts and styles. “Compared to a few years ago, when we saw a lot of high-gloss finishes, glass hair and hyper-styled looks, today’s trends are all about effortless polish,” says Daniel Jianing Liu, founder and creative director of Usfin Atelier and a Shark Beauty ambassador.

Led by stars like Zendaya and Margaret Qualley, this new era means haircuts that suit your hair’s unique texture, and colour that works back with natural shades. “We’re all after colour that still makes a statement but doesn’t require being at the salon every six weeks,” says Alannah Read, salon director and leading colourist at Ella & Jade and also an ambassador for Shark Beauty.

“It’s less about following trends and more about enhancing the individual,” says Liu. “That’s a beautiful evolution.” Here’s how to tap into this new era.

How Do You Know What Haircut Is Best For You?

“Clients are moving away from heavily styled looks and leaning into cuts and colours that feel organic and low-maintenance but still elevated,” says Jianing. That means “cuts that work with the hair’s inherent flow rather than against it”.

For your salon visit, take references, but also be prepared to divulge your weekly routine. “It’s crucial to have a detailed consultation where your stylist tailors the cut to your natural hair type, density and lifestyle,” says Jianing. “Bring in reference images, but also trust your stylist to customise them. The best results come from collaboration.”

What Is The Hime Cut?

Worn by Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga at this year’s Grammys, the hime is easy to maintain, notes Jianing. A Japanese cut dating back centuries, the hime (“princess”) “is a wellstructured Wolf Cut tailored to the individual’s natural texture”, he says.

Crops

Blunt bobs and lobs are key looks in 2025, thanks in part to The White Lotus star Leslie Bibb’s blunt crop, which hairstylist Chris McMillan cut on social media. It was a defining anti-trend moment, which renewed focus on hair “that feels personal, expressive and effortlessly wearable”, notes Jianing, who says it translates to a “done but undone aesthetic”.

The Pixie Cut

Pintrest data says that searches for “long pixie cut” are up 225 per cent while “pixie cut” is up 55 per cent. So it’s clear that there is a short hair moment happening with A-listers such as Emma Stone opting for a tightly cropped do.

Colour Update

In favour are colours that work with your natural tones, rather than altering your look completely. “It’s a great way to feel like we have had a change while keeping it low maintenance,” says Alannah Read.

Brunettes:

“Try complementary shades one to two tones lighter or darker than your base,” says Read. “That allows dimension and variation without compromising on condition and losing shine and lustre.” Pantone colour of the year Mocha Mousse is a good all-round bet, as its “warmth and creamy undertones are timeless on all complexions”, she says.

Reds:

“Try mixing it up by weaving different shades of red throughout the hair to give your red depth and dimension,” suggests Read. If you want a shade that packs a punch, Dua Lipa’s cherry-cola red has evolved, and is “even more vivid and bold and edging towards a more striking auburn shade,” says Read.

Blonde:

“Blondes have been paring it back for a while now,” notes Read, and this will continue. “Lowlights and breaking up saturated blonde ends is the way forward; you will actually feel brighter with your blonde, but the level of maintenance will halve.”

Shine Tips From Daniel Jianing Liu

Section your blow dry

“The trick is to work in smaller sections and take your time. It really makes a difference to the end result.”

Enlist a serum

“Add few drops of shine serum or a light oil on mid-lengths and ends after blow-drying.”

Cool it

“Don’t forget a cool shot at the end; it helps seal everything in and gives your hair that extra gloss.”

Tool Up

Great hair needs care, and a sheeny look needs heat. “Consult your stylist on what suits your colour and hair health,” says Read. “Start with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, and once a week treat your hair to a glossing mask or deep conditioner,” suggests Jianing who also recommends a protectant when heat styling. “Then use a tool that smooths while you dry for that polished finish without the heat damage,” says Jianing, who recommends the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle RapidGloss Finisher & High-Velocity Dryer.

Its attachments for all hair types made it a hit at Australian Fashion Week. “It helps create that salon look at home but also not affect your colour by overuse of a straightening iron,” adds Read.

The post The One Thing Maria Thattil Swears By for Great Hair at Fashion Week appeared first on marie claire.

Maria Thattil‘s hair isn’t full of secrets (in fact, she’ll happily share her good hair guide with you), it’s full of stories.

“My earliest memories of hair are my mum giving me beautiful ayurvedic scalp massages with special hair oils. For South Asians, looking after your hair is an act of love,” recalls Thattil, an author, speaker and Shark Beauty ambassador. “Mum would get me to do a hair swish like they do in the shampoo commercial, and I just loved it.”

In her teens, Thattil began experimenting with her locks, playing with different styles, colours, and cuts. On one occasion, she pinched a pair of her mum’s kitchen scissors before sneaking off to the bathroom to cut her hair into a mullet.

“When I was 14, it was very cool for girls to have mullets, so I took the scissors and butchered my hair, thinking I was cutting layers. A good mullet looks hot, but my 14-year-old self didn’t quite nail the brief.”

“Then, when I was 15, The Pussycat Dolls came out with a music video where Nicole Scherzinger had a blunt fringe. So, again, I played hairdresser and cut a blunt front fringe.

“When I got older and worked in corporate, I would leave the office and get a blowout during my lunch breaks. My colleagues would say, ‘You don’t need to do hair for [work]’ and I would say, ‘I’m not, I’m doing my hair for me.'”

For Thattil, her hair is never an afterthought, but the starting point for the energy she brings to each day. Which is why for Fashion Week this year, Thattil has teamed up with Shark Beauty to create a series of runway-worthy hair looks.

Of her approach to planning her looks, Thattil says that her hair typically informs her sartorial choices.

“I start with the hair, because it frames your face. It just shapes everything and communicates a tone for your look,” Thatill says. “What I’m looking to serve this week is very different, versatile looks.”

Go-to Hair Tool For Versatile Styles?

“I want all of my Fashion Week hair looks to be unique and different, which is why the Shark’s Speed Style Rapid Gloss Finisher And High-Velocity Dryer is perfect. It’s got so many different attachments, so your hair can go from wet to dry and then be styled to a bouncy, wavy or textured straight look.”

Favourite Low Maintenance Look?

“If you’re running late for Fashion Week and you’ve literally just come out of the shower, I would do this hack that Chris Appleton taught me. First, use the Speed Style Rapid Gloss Finisher and High-Velocity Dryer to dry your hair.

“Then, put your hair up in a ponytail and use the curling wand attachment to curl massive sections of the ponytail; spray it; take it out, and you end up with this insane blowout that looks like someone’s done it at a salon. The whole process should only take 10 minutes.”

How To Lean Into Your Natural Texture

Recently, I’ve been transitioning my hair back to its natural state and colour and one thing I’ve noticed is that my hair has a very natural wave and a bit of a curl to it.

“I have never used a diffuser in my life, but recently, I have found myself reaching for one on those days when I want to work with a little bit of natural texture. I’ll put some product in it to maintain a bit of grittiness, and then I use the diffuser, and it just looks like textured beach hair on me.

“I’m so used to having a glossy blowout or straight waves, so it’s been fun to experiment with my natural texture.

“Many people grew up thinking that their natural hair texture was something to be ashamed of because it was perceived as unruly, unprofessional, or messy. So to have tools now that say there’s nothing wrong with what your hair looks like organically is incredible.

Carla Zampatti’s return to the runway at Australian Fashion Week 2025 was not only a tribute to the late designer’s enduring legacy, it was also a showcase of this season’s standout runway hair trend – bold side parts and sculptural waves.

Crafted by Shark Beauty’s Hair Director Madison Voloshin, the hair look was inspired by Zampatti herself – strong, polished, and deeply feminine. “Carla had beautiful hair with a lot of strength,” said Voloshin. “I once had the privilege of styling her hair, and this was my way of honouring her brand’s DNA.”

The show, held at Circular Quay West in Sydney, was a masterclass in simplicity, with the hair amplifying the designer’s clean, powerful lines. And as the official hair sponsor of AFW 2025, Shark Beauty ensured every model’s look held its shape against the waterfront breeze.

Strength, Simplicity, and Side Parts

The backstage team worked with Shark Beauty’s hero styling tools – the Shark FlexStyle™ Air Styling & Drying System and Shark SpeedStyle™ High-Velocity Dryer to create waves that felt both structured and touchable.

“To get the hair to float as models walk – but also hold its integrity outdoors – you have to prime the hair properly,” Voloshin explained. His team began by applying a volumising mousse for body and control. Hair was sectioned in a brick-lay pattern and curled using the FlexStyle auto-wrap attachment, ensuring lift from the root for volume and polish.

After each curl was clipped to cool in place, the set was brushed through with a soft dressing brush, creating that fluid, sculptural wave. For textured or resistant hair types, stylists used the Shark SpeedStyle with a round brush to smooth the roots and lock in shape using the cool shot setting. “This look is about balance,” Voloshin said. “It’s feminine but grounded. Minimalist, yet bold. It’s classic runway hair, updated for today.”

How To Recreate The Look At Home

This runway hair trend isn’t just for models. According to Voloshin, you can recreate the sculpted side part and soft wave hairstyle at home with a few expert tricks:

 1. Prime hair with a volumising mousse while damp.
 1. Blow-dry sections using a round brush and the Shark FlexStyle, focusing on smooth roots.
 1. Wrap hair using the auto-wrap curler, curling away from the face.
 1. Clip and cool each curl for long-lasting hold.
 1. Brush out with a dressing brush for seamless waves.
 1. Finish with cool air using the SpeedStyle for extra shine and structure.

Top Hair Trends from Australian Fashion Week 2025

From the elevated blowouts seen at Carla Zampatti to the natural texture-forward looks elsewhere on the AFW runway, one thing is clear, 2025 hair trends are leaning into architectural structure and wearable elegance.

With Shark Beauty leading the charge on tech-driven styling tools, their high-velocity dryers, curlers, and finishers are built not just for professionals but for everyday users who want salon results at home. As Voloshin summed it up: “Hair shouldn’t overpower the look – it should complete it. This season is all about quiet power, and the right hair brings that message home.”

‘I Saw Gracie Abrams Live & Now All I Can Think About Is Getting A Bob’ https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/gracie-abrams-bob-haircut/ Wed, 07 May 2025 06:07:29 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1280539 Will a bob change your life?

The post ‘I Saw Gracie Abrams Live & Now All I Can Think About Is Getting A Bob’ appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Serious question. Do I genuinely want a bob, or am I just bored? And more importantly, is it odd to be this obsessed with Gracie Abrams’ hair when she’s 25 and I’m 43? I’m acutely aware that I’m nearly two decades her senior. Also, my tween and all her friends got bobs last year. They’re 11.

But it isn’t just Gracie.

At the 2025 Met Gala, Nicole Kidman debuted a newly cropped bob that tapered so elegantly into the nape of her neck, it felt architectural. Shortly after, Pamela Anderson appeared with a chin-length cut and whispery baby bangs – soft and utterly modern. Both women are in their 50s, and neither looked remotely mumsy (my greatest fear is that a bob will make me look older).

For the longest time, I believed the bob belonged to a particular demographic – namely, someone older than me. Grown-up women who wore sensible shoes and always had tissues in their handbags (if I’m being honest, that’s me). But then I took my girls to see Gracie Abrams on The Secret of Us tour. The music was phenomenal, but so was Abrams’ jaw-skimming brown hair. It had the nonchalance of youth but the precision of a very good stylist. I was obsessed.

So back to my serious question – should I get a bob?

Because when the Met Gala aired, and those bobs stared me in the face – Kidman’s, Anderson’s – I couldn’t ignore it anymore.

“The bob we’re seeing right now is softer, airier, with a real sense of ease,” explains Michael Kelly, leading colourist and founder of SALON HER in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. “It’s less rigid than the classic version – layers are subtle, the finish is light, giving that kind of effortless texture that feels really fresh. Think relaxed and a little undone, but still polished.”

Naturally, I had questions.

Does A Bob Make You Look Younger Or Older?

“It depends entirely on the cut,” Kelly tells me. “A well-shaped bob with movement, tailored to your bone structure, can lift the face and bring lightness. But too blunt, or at the wrong length, and it can look severe. It’s all about precision and personalisation.”

What’s The Most Universally Flattering Hair Length?

“That really comes down to face shape and personal style,” he says. “Generally, anything between the lips and collarbone works well. A chin-length bob opens up the face, but if you want something softer, just skimming the collarbone can feel more wearable.”

Why The Idea That Long Hair Is Youthful Is Outdated

We’ve been conditioned – through shampoo commercials, rom-coms, and endless cultural ideals – to believe that long hair is synonymous with femininity, desirability, and youth. As though length alone could guarantee allure. I’ve kept my long-ish hair partly out of habit, partly out of fear. It’s been a sort of security blanket.

“Bobs suit all ages,” Kelly says. “There’s no age limit on a brilliant haircut. The beauty of a bob is its adaptability. On younger clients it can be cool and playful, and on more mature women it brings structure and elegance. It’s all about how it’s cut and styled to suit you.”

Why the Bob Haircut Is the It-Girl Style of 2025

So – will a bob transform your life? Maybe. Maybe not.

But if you’ve stared longingly at that photo of Gracie Abrams you saved or found yourself wondering whether a little chop might be just what you need, then you probably already have your answer.

If you think hair loss is a male issue, think again. In fact, it’s a very female problem. Studies suggest that up to 50 per cent of women will experience hair loss in their lifetime. And it can happen at all ages.

In addition to this, in Australia, one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. A common side-effect of chemotherapy is hair loss or thinning. It’s an issue that paediatric nurse, Martine Le Moy experienced when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I started chemotherapy, and then about two weeks later my hair started to fall out,” says Le Moy. “I decided to get my medium-length hair cut into a short style. It felt good to take a bit of control. I wish I had done it sooner, as then it fell out dramatically. At that point, I got my husband to shave off the remaining hair.”

Wigs weren’t a priority for Le Moy but she did find the transition emotionally challenging. “It was strange to see the shape of my head, and I was [initially] worried about how to cover up.”

“My daughter, who was seven years old at the time, worried that other kids at school would ask me questions about it. But once we explained it to her, she and her friends didn’t really give it a second thought.”

Italian model Bianca Balti has also been open about her hair-loss journey.

On Instagram, the mother of two, who has battled stage 3 ovarian cancer, has posted many hair-free images along with such statements as “what didn’t kill me made me love life a lot more”.

Balti shows that a full head of hair is not where a person’s beauty lies. It’s a powerful stance in a world obsessed with luscious manes. But the fact is that even a little thinning can be traumatic. And the reasons for hair loss are numerous.

Female pattern hair loss, or FPHL, is “the most common form of hair thinning in women,” says Dr Kenneth Brito, who treats both women and men for hair loss at Dr Zacharia clinic in Double Bay.

“It usually occurs around menopause, causing a reduction of hair especially in the central, frontal and side scalp.”

Kérastase K-Scan is available at Kérastase salons and uses tech to measure hair thickness and density.

Other factors can cause hair loss. Vitamin deficiencies, contraceptive pills, chemotherapy and some antidepressants can all lead to hair thinning.

Brito also points to stress. “Stress can lead to acute and chronic hair loss,” he says. “Pregnancy and childbirth can also play a role in hair loss, as can issues such as an iron deficiency, endocrine disorders [such as thyroid hormone imbalance and polycystic ovary syndrome] and the fact that your mother had the issue.”

Hask Repair Series Bond Building Leave-in Treatment Cream, $27. Using a TripleBond Complex, this hydrating leave-in cream helps fortify the hair shaft and leaves hair looking smoother and healthier.

Tips From A Trichologist

Chelcey Salinger, a consultant trichologist at the Australian Trichology Centre who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss and scalp disorders, explains that good scalp care is essential. “Shampooing frequently is recommended, preferably with a shampoo that has a pH of about 5.5,” says Salinger who recommends Hask haircare to her patients. “Cleansing the scalp frequently will prevent dandruff and oily scalp problems on the scalp. Choosing the right products to address your hair and scalp challenges will help rebalance the scalp microbiome.”

Salinger recommends scalp-soothing tea tree products such the Hask Tea Tree Shampoo, $17 and Hask Tea Tree Oil 5-in-1 Leave-In Spray. Also enlist an ergonomic brush to massage the scalp such as this Natural Bristle Hair Brush from Toni and Guy.

Toni & Guy Natural Bristle Hairbrush, Hask Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Tea Tree Oil 5-in-1 Leave-in Spray.

If you’ve ruled out the usual suspects for hair loss (eg, lifestyle changes, stress increases and any recent product change), then more intensive treatment may be required such as medication and other therapies.

Treatments For Hair Loss

Here are some ways to get hair thick and healthy:

Medication: Some drugs can help stimulate hair growth “by increasing the anagen or growing phase of the hair cycle”, explains Dr Brito. Medicine can either be applied topically or taken orally, though they can take 12 months to show signs of improvement. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): “Containing numerous growth factors capable of stimulating the proliferation of stem cells, PRP helps stimulate healing and cell repair,” says Brito.

Microneedling: “Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure in which fine needles are rolled over the skin to puncture the very top layer,” says Brito. “Microneedling induces a wound healing cascade with minimal damage to the epidermis that [helps] induce collagen formation and growth factor production of the treated areas.”

Low level light therapy: “This is commonly used in conjunction with other medical treatment options to supplement results,” explains Brito.

Supplements: While some supplements containing amino acids, biotin, zinc, palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, or marine protein complexes may be beneficial to hair health, experts are divided. “There are several [ways] which both iron and vitamin D have possible effects on hair growth,” adds Brito.

Hair transplants: These may be an option for severe of female pattern hair loss, says Brito. Small bundles of hair are transferred from the back part of the scalp to the affected bald area. “The number of grafts needed to be harvested depends on the severity of the hair thinning. Growth spurt starts from six months [post procedure] and continues over the next few months.”

There’s a secret to having fantastic looking locks, seemingly at the drop of a hat: don’t leave it to the last minute. Those in the know put in some careful groundwork early, so they can kick back later with easy-care hair that looks polished yet effortless, with the right amount of bounce and shine.

Women such as Demi Moore and Alycia Debnam-Carey are able to straddle that line between “done” and “undone” with chic dexterity. The secret, says Brad Mullins, celebrity hairstylist and ambassador for Hask, is clever prep work, getting hair into peak healthiness and working with your natural texture. The key is making sure your hair is in great condition,” says Mullins, who has tended to the locks of Elsa Pataky, Celeste Barber and Alycia Debnam Carey.

“Sometimes it’s all about embracing your natural wave and adding a bit more body with heat styling where it’s needed to create that perfectly cool, undone, It-girl look.”

Here, Mullins answers all our burning questions on how to get hair and scalp health at its peak – nail those, and you’ll be able to jump out of bed and get on with your day looking effortlessly chic.

What’s the key to getting undone hair that still looks polished?

“You should do a treatment once a week and ensure your natural-dried hair is healthy. If you air-dry your hair and it tends to get frizzy, that’s a sign you need more moisture. Use a treatment once a week, along with a serum, a leave-in conditioner and a heat protector to regularly keep hair hydrated and protected. It makes all the difference.”

What’s your current favourite red carpet hair look?

“How can you not love Demi Moore’s long, sleek, glossy locks? It’s absolute dream hair. I also really loved Selena Gomez’s sleek wet look at the BAFTAs. That was so chic and sophisticated.”

How do we get shine into dull-looking hair?

“The best way is by using a hydrating treatment once a week. My go-to products are the Hask Leave-In Treatment Cream and the Hask Argan Oil Repairing Oil; they keep hair healthy and polished.” If we want effortless waves… “I’d suggest using a large tong and then brushing it out with a bristle brush after curling. If it’s still too curly, apply a serum to weigh the hair down and help create a soft, beautiful wave.”

How do you give stars like Alycia Debnam-Carey and Elsa Pataky their beautiful, relaxed yet chic style?

“I absolutely love it every time I work with Alycia. She has amazing hair with its own natural wave, which I like to enhance using a styling tong on parts for that cool, undone feel. Elsa has a beautiful natural wave in her hair, too. Sometimes I like to work with her hair wet, adding shine and moisture, and using a diffuser to enhance her own natural wave.”

What are your best maintenance tips for healthy hair?

“Invest in a good bristle brush and brush your hair before shampooing. It is also very important to use a great shampoo and conditioner and treat your hair once a week. Don’t forget to use a heat protector before styling as well. These simple steps can really keep your hair in top condition.

The bad news: between the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, people are getting fewer haircuts. And with that arises a slew of concerns previously sorted by regular salon visits (and a professional eye). The good news: there are a huge range of damaged hair repair products that can help!

It’s hard to fix hair once it’s damaged, but there are ways to protect your locks from being compromised by heat and poor styling techniques. It’s all about proper prep, maintenance and regular check-ins with your scalp and strands to identify what your hair needs at any given time.

And luckily, a mass of effective formulas targeted at damaged hair repair are just a same-day-delivery away. It’s now just a matter of sifting through to identify what products, treatments and techniques will help…easy right?

Queue the experts. We enlist hairstylists Anthony Nader (founder of RAW salon) and Jaye Edwards (founder of Edwards and Co) for their top remedies to treat common hair woes and maintain overall healthy locks.

Split Ends

Supposed split-end saviours are on the rise (and amassing millions of views on TikTok’s #hairtok). But Nader warns these “revolutionary” products may not be giving the results we had hoped for. “Once the hair is split, it’s split,” he explains. “There are products on the market that can ‘mask or seal’ a split end but it’s not permanent.” Nader’s solution? Regular haircuts because “why do you want to grow unhealthy split hair?” So if your last trim is a distant memory, preventing frayed ends from splitting further up the hair shaft sounds like a very good reason to book in.

How To Repair Overall Damage

To repair damaged and frail locks, Anthony Nader recommends investing in a quality hair mask. “Think of it like a facial for your hair.  You can improve the longevity and healthy by applying a supple moisture or protein masque once a week. The more you feed your strands the more productive your hair styling will be” says Nader.

Prevent further damage (and rough texture) by considering your hair’s exposure to heat. When using hot styling tools use a heat protective spray and experiment with temperature. Nader suggests using your tools on half the heat temp and closing the hair cuticle post shower by switching to a cool water temperature at the end.

For a boosted improvement to hair strength, try an at-home bond repair treatment. Previously reserved for the salon, Jaye Edwards advises “I would stick to using a bonding product weekly and consulting with your stylist in salon. Once you have repaired your damaged bonds, using additional treatment will just wash down the sink. You cant fix what isn’t broken.”.

How To Protect Against Colour Harm

Much to our dismay, colour treating your hair runs the risks chemical damage.

Edwards can attest “I see a lot of blondes who have been over highlighted, causing breakage and inconsistent colour… Using non salon quality products at home will also create build up and affect your colour.” His advice? “Put down the bleach, have a decent trim and invest in a quality restorative treatment STAT.”

We suggest L’Oreal Professionnel’s Metal Detox Serum In Oil, which helps to repair damaged hair and protect against harmful metal deposits seen in colour treated hair. Eleven’s Blonde Toning Spray is a great option for neutralising tone and brassiness.

To extend the longevity of colour services, and reduce you’re exposure to high intensity chemicals, Edwards suggests “booking in for regular glosses, these are quick 15 minute in salon treatments that help make your colour pop again without booking a full colour service”.

Locks lacking lustre? Nader suspects your shower routine may be to blame. “If your hair strands are frail and lack shine, I’d say you’re using the wrong shampoo and conditioner,” he explains.

“Ask your hairdresser to prescribe the best products for your hair type.” Other factors can be diet, sunlight and chemical damage. Try adding serums from Iles Formula (dosed with Australian botanicals) or Guerlain (enriched with black bee honey) into your daily hair routine, to promote vitality and shine.

Nader’s preferred application involves “a few drops onto damp hair. It blow-dries in beautifully and doesn’t appear dirty or feel heavy”.

Hydration is key for combating frizz, says Jaye Edwards. He suggests applying products right after you shower to lock in moisture; think of it as “skin flooding” for your hair.

While there are external aggressors that contribute to frizz, it often comes down to genetics, so “work with your natural hair texture, rather than against it.”

For wavy to curly/kinky hair, products such as Bread’s Curl Capturing Gloss gel are essential in reducing frizz and taming flyaways while retaining texture and volume. Living Proof’s Smooth Styling Serum is a great option for straighter hair types and will leave locks looking polished and sleek.

The root cause of dry, oily or greasy hair could be your scalp care (or lack of). Investing in your scalp care can help promote growth, stimulate more manageable oil production, and encourage a healthier, more damage-resistant head of hair in general.

The new wave of scalp-care products focus on a holistic routine, with ingredients like salicylic acid and others offering exfoliating properties that aid in the removal of product build-up and help other treatments penetrate your strands properly. When it comes to the Academy Awards, it’s hard to keep your eyes off the fashion. However, if we drag our attention away, we’ll come to see some of the most memorable and glamorous Oscars beauty looks to ever grace a red carpet.

From Audrey Hepburn’s micro fringe at the 1954 Oscars, to Zoë Kravitz’s rendition of it in 2022, we see the styles that just keep coming back throughout the years.

As far as award ceremonies go, the Oscars is as much of a big deal as they get. Thus, we see many celebrities playing up the glamour, with chic, but not necessarily daring looks. It’s not about being the most ostentatious, it’s about exuding that Old Hollywood glamour and reminding loyal watchers of the gravitas of the movie star.

While the makeup is quite simple and glamourous, the hair is more playful. From Nicole Kidman’s 2004 updo that channelled a kind of curly mohawk (made oh-so-chic) to Halle Berry’s impressive afro at the 2017 awards, there have been so many hair looks that we can’t help but celebrate.

The makeup and hair trends may come and go over the eras, but these looks will forever have a place in our hearts.

Emma Stone, 2024

Emma Stone took home her second acting Oscar in 2024. While we adored her seafoam green Louis Vuitton gown, we also loved her rosy pink, pared back makeup.

The look was created by Emma’s make-up artist, Rachel Goodwin, with 100% Charlotte Tilbury products.

While Emma’s flawless complexion was achieved with a combination of creams, serums, mists, two shades of foundation and concealer, the highlight for us were her slightly rouged and highlighted cheeks, which were completed with the Beauty Light Wand in ‘Spotlight’ and the Matte Beauty Blush Wand in the shade ‘Pillow Talk Pink Pop’, both by Charlotte Tilbury.

Meanwhile, the lips used a combo of Lip Cheat lip liner in ’90s Pink’, Charlotte’s Hollywood Beauty Icon Lipstick K.I.S.S.I.N.G, also in ’90s Pink’, and finished with Pillow Talk Plumpgasm — which is yet to be released to the public.

You can read all the details of Emma’s make-up look, here.

Glow and Tell: How To Get Extra Mileage Out Of Your Hairstyle This Summer https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/summer-hair-styling-tips/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 07:30:16 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1271031 Five hair-boosting things a beauty director will be doing over the holidays

Heat and humidity are great at the beach, but not so amazing when you’re trying to get on with life and you need your hair to look fresh. I have coloured hair which, if it’s not at least a little bouncy, can look lank in high temperatures. And my blonde can also get a little dull, especially if I am in and out of water on hot summer days. Thankfully, there are things I can do though to keep my strands looking good. Here are five of them.

1. Get a cut at the start of summer

You probably have heard this one on repeat but booking in for a cut with your hairdresser before you head off on holidays really will help your hair get through the hot months without looking like straw. Blunt ends will prevent hair breakage and split ends and will keep your style looking fresh, which is why I always book in for a cut in mid-December. I also embraced 2024’s obsession with the bob and cut my hair to just below my chin (thank you Nasser at Salon Her) and it has really helped with the health of my hair. Yes, I do have to book in every six weeks for upkeep but my hair looks thicker and stronger as a result.

2. Invest in a leave-in product

I have long loved a post-shower leave-in product to detangle my hair and make it more manageable. The new generation products now offer added strand-strengthening abilities in the form of bond building formulas that help restructure damaged hair. I use Redken’s Acidic Bonding Leave-in Treatment regularly for adding hydration and strength to my hair as well as offering heat protection. I also like Revlon Professional’s UniqOne leave-in which has multiple benefits such as detangling, shine and hydration.

3. Get your scalp checked

Knowing your scalp up close can give insight in terms of what you need to fix issues such as tightness, redness and itchiness. I went to Sloans Salon in Lane Cove the other day and they put my scalp health under new technology by Kérastase. Called KSCAN, it’s an AI powered smart camera which can asses the health of my scalp in minutes. My hair stylist used the device to take a reading of my scalp (the process was completely painless) and I found out things that I wasn’t expecting. The good: I have thick strands – I always thought my strands were on the thinner side.

More on Kérastase KSCAN treatment at Kerastase.com

The less exciting: my scalp is lacking some microbiome, which are needed for a fully functioning head of hair. When we get to the basin, after a thorough shampoo and conditioner prescribed by the AI, I am given a dose of Kérastase’s famed Fusio Booster Reconstruction shot, a fortifying booster which helps prevent breakage. Back in the chair, my stylist adds some Kérastase Spécifique Potentialiste Vitamin C Hair And Scalp Serum, which helps to balance my scalp and boost my microbiome health. And the results weren’t only for my head, my blonde also looks shinier, my hair is more manageable (my style holds until my next wash) and that tightness on my scalp has gone thanks to added microbiome.

4. Apply a mask

I admit, I can get lazy with hair masking, especially when it involves the faff of an endless shower. So I make sure when I am in the bath (which is at least once a week), I apply a mask for 10 to 15 minutes while I soak. It does so much for hydration and hair manageability, so the wait time is worth it. Try Hask’s Keratin version which is not only budget-friendly but also adds strength and healthy shine to hair.

HASK Keratin Protein Smoothing Deep Conditioner, $6 at Priceline

5. Protect your hair

My hair can get dry if I expose it to too much sun so on the weekends I wear a hat and use a UV-filter leave-in treatment like Oribe’s Invisible Defence Universal Protection Spray to protect my colour against the elements and prevent dryness. I also like to swim laps so I tend to wear a swimming cap to keep the chlorine or salt off my hair. I’ll follow up with a deep conditioner (Briogeo has this great one) to get my hair shining again.

Blonde Hair Survival Guide For Summer https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/summer-blonde-hair-guide/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 01:03:43 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1267632 Your essential hot-weather hair routine

The post Blonde Hair Survival Guide For Summer appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Summer is finally underway in Australia and it’s time for blondes – whether real or salon-enhanced – to shine. And we mean that literally. We asked an expert for their top tips on keeping blonde hair vibrant, hydrated and protected from the holy trinity of summer – heat, sea and sun.

A salon visit, though one of our favourite self-care regimes, can rack up a hefty bill. When the cost-of-living pressure is on, we’re always on the lookout for savvy money saving tricks. Fortunately, keeping blonde hair looking fresh doesn’t have to be expensive.

According to celebrity hairstylist, David Keogh, you only need three (yes, three!) products in your repertoire for bright and beautiful hair. All year round, he recommends using the three-step John Frieda Blonde+ Repair System, but has also gifted us some pearls of wisdom on how your hot-weather hair routine should look.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

Blondes, we feel your pain—in summer, colour fading and dryness are your hair’s biggest struggles. Conditioning alone is not enough; you need to give your strands the love they deserve (and need). That’s where a deep conditioning treatment comes in.

“Deep conditioning goes beyond your everyday routine, strengthening hair from the inside out,” says celebrity stylist David.

Look no further than the John Frieda Blonde+ Repair Bond Building Pre-shampoo Treatment – David swears by it. The technical formula visibly repairs damage caused by colouring, bleaching and heat styling. Apply it as the first step before your shampoo and conditioner to rebuild your hair’s bonds, boosting strength and shine from within. Blonder, healthier hair has never been easier.

Beachside Protection

Hats are a must and a chic way to shield your hair from the sun. For an extra layer of protection, try applying a light coat of John Frieda Blonde+ Repair Bond Building Conditioner before you hit the beach. It’ll help guard your locks against the harsh elements while keeping them nourished – too easy.

As much as we love the beachy waves that come from salty, sun-kissed hair, David reminds us that “rinsing your hair after swimming is key. So, if you’re diving in to cool off, make sure to give yourself a quick rinse to prevent your locks from drying out.

Beat The Heat

Heat can dry hair out and it can also affect your colour. Overexposure to the sun or styling tools can make blonde tones look flat and faded. David recommends giving your hair (and your styling tools) a break this summer. “Use curling irons and straighteners only when absolutely necessary and mix things up with a sleek ponytail every other day,” he suggests. It’s a simple trick that can make a big difference.

Summer is an opportune time to embrace your hair’s natural texture—whether it’s curls, waves, or something in between. With less heat styling, your hair has the freedom to take its natural shape, and David anticipates this effortlessly tousled, texture-rich look to be one of the hottest looks this summer.

Alopecia Advocate Chloe Bean On Going Bald, For A Third Time https://www.marieclaire.com.au/beauty/hair/chloe-bean-alopecia/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 05:59:44 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1264229 "Wigs and extensions have become like matching a purse to my outfit"

The post Alopecia Advocate Chloe Bean On Going Bald, For A Third Time appeared first on marie claire.

Chloe Bean is an American influencer based in the state of Arizona, and uses her social media platforms advocate for alopecia sufferers. She uses her social media to destigmatise the autoimmune disease that she was diagnosed with when she was eight years old. Here she exclusively shares with marie clair Australia, in her own words ,what it was like to lose her hair for the third time.

Growing up, I always knew somebody had it worse than I did. I mean, I was just losing my hair. It wasn’t until high school that my hair loss really started to affect my self-esteem. That’s when the bullying began, and I almost ended up being homeschooled because of it.

When I first noticed my hair loss, I felt confused. I didn’t understand why it was happening, and even my parents weren’t sure. They initially thought I was pulling my hair out. As a child, I was always very compassionate because I knew my situation wasn’t the worst. To cope, I wore hats every day or thick headbands to hide the bald spots.

At first, I felt very attached to my hair and would try anything to stop it from falling out. I remember getting my first wig and customising it to look exactly like my hair before it fell out. I didn’t want anyone to know I was wearing a wig. Now, wigs and hair are like matching a purse to my outfit. It’s a way of expressing myself and embracing the fact that I can have any hair colour I want, whenever I want.

chloe-bean-alopecia

Losing my hair was a deeply personal and challenging experience. I had to deal with changes in my self-image, societal pressures, and I almost lost my sense of identity. For a while, I definitely felt like I lost my confidence, as hair is often seen as the centre of femininity.

” The turning point in my journey came when I went bald for the third time. It made me realise that I needed to stop fighting for something that wasn’t meant for me”

But in terms of confidence, it was when I started posting on social media that I truly felt empowered. I found people going through the same thing as me, and it made me realise how much I wanted to help others facing similar struggles.

From the start, my family has been my biggest support system. They did everything in their power to make me feel beautiful and confident, which I think helped me maintain faith and hope that things would eventually get better.

To others struggling with hair loss and self-esteem issues, I want to say: it’s okay. You don’t have to hide it. You don’t have to be ashamed. I know how hard it is to accept, but the moment you embrace your alopecia is the moment you take control of it, and that’s something beautiful. Remember, your worth extends far beyond your appearance!

Dealing with societal pressures and beauty standards that equate hair with femininity isn’t easy. I’ve learned to recognise that beauty is diverse and personal, and it isn’t confined to one specific look. Surrounding myself with supportive communities and individuals who value me for who I am has been crucial.

My self-care routines have been a big part of boosting my confidence. Joining support groups of people going through the same thing has helped tremendously. Daily mindfulness, regular exercise, journaling, and self-compassion practices have all contributed to building my confidence and maintaining a positive self-image.

My journey with hair loss has deeply influenced my approach to beauty and skincare products. It has helped me focus on what makes me feel confident and comfortable rather than adhering to traditional standards.

I vividly remember a moment that changed my perspective on self-esteem and hair loss. When my hair was falling out, I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. Shaving off the rest seemed like the only option, but I couldn’t come to terms with it. So, I started looking up women with shaved heads on the internet. Seeing so many bald women confidently smiling with genuine happiness made me realise that self-esteem is deeply rooted in how we embrace and express our true selves. This experience shifted my perspective, teaching me that beauty and self-worth come from within and are defined by how we choose to celebrate our individuality rather than conforming to external expectations.

The post Recreate The Chappell Roan Red Hair Trend At Home appeared first on marie claire.

Chappell Roan is red hot right now. The fiery Good Luck Babe singer/songwriter’s debut album has rocketed up the charts, she took home Best New Talent at the recent MTV Music Awards and anyone who’s heard of her will tell you she’s a vibe.

Roan has exploded into the culture with her bold look, seriously addictive 2000s-inspired synth pop, f-yeah lyrics and larger than life stage presence. And her flaming red mane has ignited a worldwide trend. Redheads (and wannabe redheads), this is your moment.

On a recent shoot for marie claire, we asked professional stylist and colourist Amiee Hershan for her pro tips for re-creating Roan’s fiery red. It’s a high-impact look, Amiee says, that’s easy to do at home.

“You absolutely can create this look yourself,” she says. “Always wanted to be red? Then do it. It’s hair, it grows and washes out. Don’t worry about it clashing with your clothes, either. Clashes are cool and bravery is always sexy.”

We’re convinced! So, here are Amiee’s tips for achieving a salon-worthy colour at home, and more celeb-inspired hues to put on your colour hitlist.

1. Choose A Quality Colour

“Be bold!” says Amiee. “There are some awesome reds in the Clairol Professional Colour Studio range. I love these products as they make achieving high end professional looks easy at home and on a budget.”

The range is a favourite with pros as it’s a three-step system that doesn’t just colour. Inspired by salon systems, step one is a pre-colour primer to protect your hair, step two is colour, and step three is aftercare, with a shampoo, conditioner and mask to keep your colour vibrant for longer.

2. More (Colour) Is More

If you have very thick or long hair, consider doubling up on the colour to ensure you get the best coverage.

“Make sure you have enough product,” says Amiee. “This may mean buying more than one box, but it’s better to have more than less.”

3. Watch The Clock

Make sure you set a timer according to the directions on the kit and stick to it.

“For a true, bright colour leave your colour on for the full recommended time,” says Amiee. “Otherwise, it might look a bit washed out and not the most fabulous version you’re going for.”

4. Take Care With Your Application

Apply a layer of petroleum jelly around your hairline to protect against staining, and ensure you get the tint right down to the hairline.

“Watch the application when you’re going round your hairline and ears,” suggests Amiee. “To be effortlessly cool, you don’t want to give the game away with patchy roots.”

Still not sure if Chappell Roan’s fiery red is for you? Take a scroll through more of our favourite redheads below, to get inspired and find the perfect shade of red to light your fire.

The post Glow & Tell: My Hair Fell Out After My Pregnancy, Here’s What I Did appeared first on marie claire.

I have never thought of my hair as a defining characteristic of who I am. My hair is, after all, only hair. But then again, it’s not just hair as well, is it? Perhaps more than any other element of our outward appearance, our hair is intrinsically linked to how others see us. How they describe us even. So when my hair started to fall out in patches around my hairline, especially around my temples after I stopped breastfeeding my second son, it did raise a few alarm bells inside.

Long at the time, the hair lining my face looked thin, broken and decidedly wispy. I would pull it back behind my ears to try and hide it, but there was no hiding it from the professionals. Anthony Nadar at RAW in Sydney got his (expert) comb onto that section of hair and told me “we need to clean these bits up”. Cutting what frayed hair was left was the stopgap way to blend them into the rest of my hair; it also shored up the weakened hair and gave it time to grow back into the blunt edges that Nader (and I) love so much.

My other hair expert friend, celebrity colourist Michael Kelly at Salon Her in Sydney, suggested I look at upping my diet with ingredients such as zinc, biotin, selenium and riboflavin, as he blow-dried my hair one day and noticed the spindly bits where my hair used to be. I definitely beelined to the shops for Brazil nuts (which are high in selenium) and cashews (natural zinc bombs) immediately after my appointment.

Hormones. While we’re on the topic, let’s unpack just how linked they are with our hair. My hair shedding was an issue called post-partum hair loss, or telogen effluvium. It affects a lot of us during pregnancy, a time when our hormones are acting like a three-year-old after a sugar-filled birthday party (think: a little all over the place) and causing normal internal function to go haywire.

Telogen effluvium can happen for a number of reasons, from pregnancy to hormone fluctuations, medication changes or metabolic stress. And you can lose up to 30% of your head of hair. Thirty per cent. It’s a lot. And although this type of hair loss is temporary, seeing clumps of strands in the shower drain, or pulling wads of hair out of your hairbrush is far from how we want to start (or end) our day.

Pair it with the other things in my world that were going on at that time – like going back to work, or experiencing a body that isn’t quite what it was before I was pregnant, or, oh I don’t know, having another whole human being in the house – having my hair fall out on top of it all, felt a bit like a cruel joke.

Of course, there is a bit of a caveat here. I very possibly had more hair during my pregnancy than I did before I fell pregnant. This is because pregnancy hormones cause hairs in the growing phase (called anagen) to enter the resting phase (called telogen), meaning hair sticks around a lot longer when you’re expecting a baby. It’s a win for sure. Especially with all the other less exciting things happening to your body (like bloating and indigestion). But it’s short lived.

Losing the hair after all the hormones stopped is normal. It also won’t last forever. You should only lose hair for 6 months and your hair should go back to its former glory. But in the meantime, it’s very possible to lose up to 100 hairs a day. Which, let’s be real, isn’t a fun time.

One big thing I did do to curb the issue was cut my hair. I was desperate for a change anyway and a bobbed style suited the parameters of my hectic morning routine. The wash and wear abilities of shorter hair also meant I didn’t have to overuse heat styling if I wasn’t in the office. On the days that I am, I still love my Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer and my Shark SmoothStyle Heated Comb on the comb setting, which both deliver me polished hair in a flash without heat damage.

I still colour my hair but instead of the bright icy tones I used to favour, and which require regular upkeep, my wonderful colourist, celebrity colourist Simon Bright at Jonny & June, now gives me a more natural look with tonal beiges, pops of blonde and lowlights, which allows my hair to grow out naturally and lets me extend my appointments by a week or two.

Also, I overhauled my haircare routine. Thankfully the market has been populated with a crop of new hair boosters over the past few years, which promise to improve hair health and shine.

Very science-y, this ingredient multitasks to both fill in a porous surface (my over-worked hair) as well as fill the centre of the hair (the cortex) for smoother hair. I follow up with the shampoo, hair mask and the hair oil from the range and honestly my hair feels like a pro has done it. It’s silky and shiny and feels healthy and full.

07

Robe Haircare Tonic

from $69.99 at Robe Haircare

A targeted haircare range, Australian brand, Robe Haircare, harnesses actives to help get hair on the brink looking healthy and transformed. The scalp restoring tonic is a hero and I spray it into my hair often. It can go on at any point in your wash cycle and doesn’t wreck a hairstyle, nor is it fragranced, both of which are a big positive, especially as I like to spray it around my hairline. Great for boosting hair health and shine.
