The summer season is upon us, and usually that means a trip to the salon to refresh the strands and get ready for the warmer weather. But if you’re feeling the pressure of the rising cost of living, dropping a few hundred dollars at the salon is probably the last thing you’d want to do.

But just because an expensive salon visit is out of the question doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve the season’s trending tones from the comfort of your own home. Jaye Edwards of Edwards and Co gives us the inside scoop on all the colours we can expect to see this summer season. And with the help of Clairol, we will show you how to achieve the look for a fraction of the price.

At-Home Summer Colour

Glassy Brunette

A huge trend at the moment is ‘lived in’ healthy hair. Edwards has been seeing a “big shift towards glossy, light reflecting brunettes. Think hair that radiates health and that ‘expensive’ finish.” To recreate the glossy tone at home, you’re going to want the perfect toned brown, courtesy of Clairol’s Nice’n Easy in ‘Natural Medium Brown’ ($9.99 at Chemist Warehouse). With the brand’s ColourSeal Conditioning Gloss worked into the formula, you’ll be seeing shimmering, glossy colour and silky soft strands from the get-go. The key to keeping the ‘glassy’ finish is to maintain your hair hydration with a good in-shower wash routine, and top up your root colour with the easy-to-blend Clairol Root Touch up in the same colour ($13.99 from Chemist Warehouse).

No Bleach Bronde

A bleach-free colour is the perfect way to add long-lasting (and easily maintainable) dimension. Edwards suggests this colour is for “naturally light brown clients wanting a pop of warmth and dimension.” Opting for the blending, toning and highlighting Clairol Nice’n Easy in ‘Natural Dark Blonde’ ($9.99 from Chemist Warehouse) will give your tresses those moments of sun-kissed warmth while still being easy to maintain.

Buttercream Blonde

You can’t go past a summer season without seeing an influx of blondes. The rumours are true, they really do have more fun. So, with that in mind, take your strands to a fresh, vibrant tone this summer. Edwards tells marie claire that ‘Buttercream Blonde’ is “defined by its dimension, darker roots and pops of brightness at the front, creating a luminous blonde”. Our favourite aspect of this colour is how easy it is to achieve. Normally, taking your hair blonde can take several harsh tries before nailing the perfect colour and tone. But with the deeper roots, you can simply brighten the mid to ends of your hair with the Clairol Nice’n Easy in ‘Light Beige Blonde’ ($9.99 from Chemist Warehouse). Bonus points if you also pick up Clairol Frost & Tip Blonde Highlighting ($20 from Woolworths) to add the brightening face-framing pieces.
