The ‘skinification’ trend has well and truly taken over our feeds, ultimately transforming the way we view our hair and body care. The trend looks at how we care for our skin, not just on our face, but everywhere else.

For our hair, caring for our scalp as skin is key to seeing improvement, whether that be longer, stronger strands or if you’re looking to rid yourself of an oily, flaky scalp.  Dr Leona Yip shares some of her insights into why ‘skinification’ is the trend worth adopting.

Why Should You ‘Skinify’ Your Scalp

Much like the rest of our face and bodies, our scalp is actually skin. Sure, it’s easy to forget our scalp’s needs when we’ve gotten so used to our simple shampoo and condition routines.

If healthy, shiny strands are at the forefront of your wishes, then start with your scalp. Properly looking after your scalp can encourage not only hair growth, but it can also work to improve your scalp health, which in turn addresses any scalp concerns you may be having.

Dermatologically Backed Haircare

Finding a haircare routine that’s backed by science and dermatologists alike is key to having the hair of your dreams. Much like you choose active ingredients for your face, it’s time to start incorporating them into your hair wash routine.  Dr Yip tells marie claire “just like when you choose skincare products, it’s important to remember that active ingredients alone are not enough. You also need to consider product formulation and scientific innovations to determine whether the product will work well to target your scalp concerns.”

Look for ingredients such as salicylic acid and selenium disulphide to target the likes of buildup, oils and dandruff.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) that works as a gentle exfoliant. For your scalp, that means banishing buildup and opening up your hair follicles to allow for healthy, clean growth. And, as Dr Yip tells us, “it’s safer to use a chemical exfoliant than to scrub your scalp. Salicylic acid can unclog the skin pores and remove skin cell debris.”

Selenium Disulphide

Found in many dandruff shampoos, this antifungal, antiseptic active targets the source of flaky concerns and works to rebalance your scalp’s bacterial properties.
