A surprise self-eviction

For a brief, shining moment, Abiola Oreyomi felt like the soul of the Big Brother Australia house: sleepy, sharp, self-possessed.

When she introduced herself as a “fat, Black lesbian” on night one, she instantly became both a fan favourite and frontrunner for the $100,000 prize.

So when she suddenly vanished from the Dreamworld compound this week, viewers noticed immediately.

Eagle-eyed fans clocked that one of the beds had been removed. Abiola hadn’t appeared on the 24/7 livestream for hours. Then came an accidental confirmation. During a briefly unmuted moment, fellow housemate Emily was heard referencing her in the past tense. “Because Abs is gone,” she said casually, invoking Abiola’s beloved Clark Rubber beanbag.

Multiple feed cuts only intensified the mystery. So where exactly did she go?

Did Abiola Actually Leave ‘Big Brother’ Australia?

Yes. And she left with cash in hand.

In a Christmas-themed challenge that felt engineered to torment both housemates and viewers, anyone not up for nomination was offered the chance to walk out of the house in exchange for $15,000 of the total $100,000 prize pool.

On Sunday’s eviction episode, Abiola re-emerged to cheers from the audience. Daily Mail Australia later reported she exited on Day 20 after accepting the offer.

Network 10 initially stayed deliberately vague, teasing a “huge twist” and dropping only cryptic hints about her whereabouts.

From a game-playing perspective, Abiola didn’t lose. She opted out on her own terms, with guaranteed money in her pocket. In a show where most contestants leave with nothing but a sudden drop in Instagram engagement, that is, objectively, a win. From a viewer’s perspective, though, it feels like a small tragedy with Abiola being one of the seasons’ most charismatic contestants.

Reflecting on her time in the house, Abiola joked that she could have woken up a little earlier, but said she didn’t feel she had anything left unfinished.

“I feel like I made the relationships that I wanted to, and they were all left on really great notes,” she said.

“And the thing is, it might sound rogue to say, but I think that there are people who are more deserving of winning than I am.”

“I’ve been saying to everyone, if there’s 10k given, just nominate me. I don’t care. So when the 15k came up, I had to stand by my word — I just want to service my car and go to the dentist, bro.”

Abiola wasn’t the only person to exit on Sunday night, with Australia also voting out Holly.

Big Brother Australia airs weeknights at 7.30pm and Sundays at 7pm on Channel 10, with 24/7 livestreaming on 10play.
