Set in Tall Pines, the kind of small town you might think you’d dream of settling in, but beneath its polished exterior lies something far more sinister. When newcomer police officer Alex Dempsey (Martin) and his pregnant wife Laura (Sarah Gadon) arrive, their fresh start takes a chilling turn.
Drawn into the lives of Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind), two girls desperate to break free from a strict reform school, Dempsey finds himself on the edge of uncovering the town’s darkest truths.
The limited series is more than just an edge-of-the-seat mystery, it also has an intriguing and recognisable cast including Australia’s own Toni Collette.

Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey
Mae Martin – who also created and co-showruns Wayward – takes on the role of Alex, a police officer drawn into Tall Pines’ mysteries. You may recognise them from their career as a comedian as well as Feel Good (where they co-wrote and starred) as well as appearances in The Flight Attendant.
Toni Collette as Evelyn Wade
Toni Collette plays the formidable head of Tall Pines Academy, Evelyn Wade. Her past roles are wide-ranging and powerhouse: The Sixth Sense, Muriel’s Wedding, Little Miss Sunshine, Hereditary and Pieces of Her are just a few examples.
Sarah Gadon as Laura Redman
Sarah Gadon is Alex’s pregnant wife Laura, whose past in Tall Pines complicates everything. You might know Gadon from Alias Grace and Enemy.
Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila
Alyvia Alyn Lind plays Leila, Abbie’s friend caught in the unfolding horrors of the academy. She’s been in Daybreak among other titles but she may look more familar due to her famous family ties. Alyvia is the daughter of One Tree Hill actress Barbara Alyn Woods and sister of We Were Liars star, Emily Alyn Lind.
Sydney Topliffe as Abbie
Sydney Topliffe plays one of the two troubled teens, Abbie, which may prove to be her breakot role. Previously, she’s appeared in The Murdoch Murders, Davie & Jonesie’s Locker and Doin’ It.
Brandon Jay McLaren as Dwyane Andrews
Brandon Jay McLaren plays Dwayne Andrews in Wayward, a key figure whose loyalties and motives are tangled in Tall Pines’ dark secrets. He’s best known for roles in Power Rangers S.P.D., Graceland, Ransom, The Rookie, and Snowfall.
Patrick J. Adams as Wyatt Turner
Patrick J. Adams stars as Wyatt Turner in Wayward, a character whose charm and intelligence hide deeper ties to the town’s unfolding mysteries, particulalry given his job at the local highschool. Best known for his breakout role as Mike Ross in Suits, Adams has also appeared in The Right Stuff and Orphan Black.
John Daniel as Rory
The young Canadian actor has had a few minor roles including Donald Dukay in The Hardy Boys, and Simon MacDonald-Venturi in Life With Luca (a reboot of the popular Family Channel sitcom Life With Derek).
