Once upon a time, luxury was defined by excess – the bigger the logo, the louder the statement. It was weighted with status and measured in materialism. But in 2025, the landscape looks a little different.

At this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) event, marie claire and ELLE hosted a panel in partnership with Omoda, featuring industry leaders exploring how innovation, sustainability and technology are transforming what we value – and what we aspire to own.

We’re entering an era where intelligence is the new indulgence. From AI helping us decipher what to wear to innovation in mobility and quiet, tech-integrated design in our homes, the most coveted experiences and products are those that feel intentional and considered.

Luxury That Thinks

Mobility, in particular, is reaching a new level of sophistication. “Cars are no longer just transport – they’re a statement,” says Narine Salmasi, Omoda Jaecoo’s General Manager (Marketing) during the SXSW panel. “ We are designing vehicles as an extension of personal style.”

That sentiment perfectly captures the cultural shift playing out across fashion, beauty, design and mobility. Customers, particularly women, are drawn to brands that mirror their values, which are moving rapidly towards purpose-led, emotionally attuned and environmentally conscious. They want the innovation, but not at the cost of inauthenticity.

“Women are key decision-makers in most major household purchases especially when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.” – Narine Salmasi, General Manager- Marketing, Omoda Jaecoo

Experience Over Excess

Omoda is leaning into these emotional decisions as much as innovation. “The customer journey starts in the lounge room not the showroom,” says Salmasi. “We connect emotionally before the engine even starts”.

Their philosophy speaks to this new kind of luxury – one rooted in experience over excess, innovation over opulence, and purpose over performance. “With cars, you need that emotional connection now. It’s not just about specs – it’s about soul,” she adds. This idea, that technology should feel human, is shaping how we experience everything from the clothes we wear to the way we move through the world.

Image: Omoda

The panel also explored how the rise of AI, sustainability and hybrid technology is offering something deeper than just status. The new mark of luxury is choice – the freedom to choose how we live our innately hybrid lives. Omoda’s latest hybrid offering embodies just that. With both electric and petrol capabilities, the Omoda 9 Super Hybrid SUV fuses technology, sustainability and sophistication – a car that gets modern life.

If the SXSW conversation made one thing clear, it’s that the luxury of tomorrow won’t be defined by what we own, but by how we feel when we interact with it. We’re moving from collecting things to curating experiences. As Salmasi sums it up, “Omoda is proof you don’t have to choose between performance, style and purpose.”

Because in a world moving faster than ever, the most luxurious thing might just be the power to slow down and choose with intention.

There is nothing like the feeling of setting off on a summer road trip.

Whether it’s the freedom of the open road, the sun peeking through the windows, or the thrill of exploring somewhere new, a summer road trip is a quintessential Australian experience and one we can’t get enough of.

With so many incredible destinations at our fingertips, it can be hard to decide on where to go, which is why we have pulled together the ultimate itinerary from Sydney to Port Stephens that promises delicious food, boutique shopping, and some of NSW’s most beautiful sites.

So, curate that playlist, rally your favourite people, and set off on a journey up north.

Sydney to Mount White

It’s time to leave the city behind and set off early on the first leg of the trip, Sydney to Mt White. For any long-haul drive, travelling in comfort and style is essential, and the spacious new Volvo XC90 seven seater has everything you need to make the trip one to remember.

Once you arrive, be sure to stop by Saddles and take a seat on the open-air balcony before indulging in a gourmet breakfast.

After breakfast, take a stroll around the grounds before setting off to the Girakool Loop Track for a leisurely bushwalk. Set in the Brisbane Water National Park, on this track, you can expect picturesque waterfalls, native flora, and the perfect leg-stretching activity before getting back on the road.

Mount White to Newcastle

From here, the next leg of the journey into Newcastle takes approximately 1.5 hours, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your favourite tunes on the Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system. With 19 speakers, the Volvo XC90 will have your road trip playlist sounding like you’ve been transported to a live gig.

Once you arrive, a dip in the beachside Ocean Baths is a must before heading over to Lightyears for lunch. The lush décor and modern Asian cuisine make this the ultimate spot to perch for an afternoon of long lunching.

The nearby Darby Street is a go-to for boutique shopping, featuring stores such as Abicus, which offers a curated range of Australian fashion labels and vintage vinyls.

]]>
There was a time when Orange was apparently “the next big thing” in Australian food and wine. So that time is over – Orange has been home to the best restaurants and hotels for years now. Tucked into the cool-climate heart of Central West NSW, this country town has transformed into one of the country’s most exciting gourmet destinations. Here, winemakers rival the best in the business, chefs reimagine regional produce with playful precision, and boutique hotels restore heritage grandeur with a modern, design-led edge.

What makes Orange so irresistible is its blend of sophistication and soul. You’ll find polished dining rooms serving oysters beside live tanks and sparkling wines that give Champagne a run for its money. You’ll stumble across fibro shacks reimagined as soulful osterias, or heritage courtyards buzzing with locals on a Friday night. And when it comes time to turn in, you can choose between a velvet-draped boutique hotel, a stately 19th-century homestead, or a wine estate where the interiors are as memorable as the vintages.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a longer escape, this is your definitive guide to Orange – where to eat, where to drink, and where to stay. Consider it your ticket to the very best of this flourishing food and wine capital.

STAY: Yallungah Boutique Hotel

The first thing you notice when you roll your suitcase up Yallungah’s tree-lined driveway is the house itself. A stately 19th-century red-brick homestead, built in 1896 by architect William Lamrock, standing proud with twin chimneys, arched verandas and that distinctive symmetry that makes heritage homes feel so commanding. At dusk, when the garden is washed in dusty light, it looks like something plucked straight from a period drama. But beyond the façade, Yallungah is more than a relic – it’s a boutique hotel that’s been boldly reimagined for 2025.

The Yallungah Boutique Hotel
Lush lavender hedges and sculptural gardens frame Yallungah’s red-brick exterior, offering hidden nooks for guests to relax outdoors.

The private veranda of the Yallungah Suite, overlooking manicured gardens — the perfect spot for morning coffee or golden hour Chardonnay.

Acquired by the Travellers accommodation group in late 2024, Yallungah has become the crown jewel of a portfolio that also includes properties in Dubbo, Emerald and Bundaberg. The meticulous restoration honours the heritage architecture while adding a sleek modern extension, creating a seamless blend of history and contemporary elegance. “It’s more than a place to stay – it’s a refined, curated experience,” says Travellers Group Managing Director, Craig Smith.

Inside, the interiors are full of surprise. The Guest Lounge offers floor-to-ceiling windows framed by corten steel panels, bathing the space in dappled light. A green velvet sofa sits alongside graphic armchairs and colourful rugs, with shelves dotted with books and ceramics adding layers of personality. At one end, a grand fireplace flickers; at the other, low-slung modern tables invite you to stay and relax.

The heritage-meets-modern Yallungah Suite, blending original details with playful textiles — including patterned headboards and jewel-toned walls.

Across its 22 rooms and suites, Yallungah balances heritage detailing with bold, design-led touches. The main wing features Deluxe King, Queen and Twin Rooms, along with expansive Executive Suites boasting walk-through robes, double ensuites, freestanding soaking tubs and generous lounges. The original homestead houses unique heritage suites, including the distinguished Yallungah Suite with its marble fireplace, stately lounge and private balcony overlooking manicured gardens.

The Dining Room continues this dialogue between old and new. Original cedar details sit alongside contemporary colour, while curated Australian artworks – including a striking textile installation by Natalie Miller – transform the space into something closer to a gallery than a restaurant. By day it’s sunlit and airy; by night, it becomes intimate, hosting everything from high teas to long dinners overlooking the gardens. For business travellers, the Lamrock Boardroom provides an elegant meeting space that stays true to the building’s heritage roots.

Outside, upstairs and downstairs verandas are dressed with wicker lounges and patterned rugs, perfect for slow mornings with coffee or golden-hour wines. Lavender and hedges line the gardens, dotted with quiet nooks made for unhurried conversations. And tucked just off the driveway is Yallungah’s secret weapon: Ferment Wine Centre & Store, a cellar door and late-night bar pouring Orange’s finest cool-climate wines and small-batch gins.

What makes Yallungah feel more than just another boutique hotel is its connection to the community. The hotel works closely with regional artisans and producers to deliver an experience that feels both luxurious and rooted in place. It’s the kind of place you’ll be texting your girlfriends about before you’ve even checked out: the balcony suite, the wine bar, the art-filled dining room. More than a stay, it’s an experience – and a reason all on its own to plan a trip to Orange.

EAT: The Union Bank Hotel

Housed in a grand 1857 sandstone building, The Union Bank is both a landmark and a love letter to Orange’s thriving food and wine scene. It’s also well worth driving to Orange just for this dining experience. Since taking the reins in 2019, Executive Chef Dom Aboud and General Manager Sarah Crowley – alumni of Rockpool Bar & Grill – have reimagined the historic bank into a venue that balances heritage with modern Australian dining.

The menu is generous, with share-friendly dishes that sing with spice, citrus, and smoke, underpinned by produce sourced from the surrounding region. Start with Sugar Mill ciabatta with whipped tallow or marinated olives, or more indulgent bites like chicken liver pâté with wine jelly and rhubarb, or bone marrow with salsa macha, cornichon, and chilli. Mains range from whole barramundi with smoked fish cream and prawns, to pork loin chop with char sui glaze, sirloin with miso bagna cauda, and Sir Thomas Beef spare ribs with peperonata. Sides – broccolini with smoked sesame and togarashi, chips with aioli, or mixed leaves with burnt honey – round out a menu designed for sharing and celebration.

You'll enjoy lingering in the leafy courtyard with a local chardonnay.
You’ll enjoy lingering in the leafy courtyard with a local chardonnay.

Cocktails are equally delicious. Try a Negron-O with Parrot Dry Gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari, an Old Fashioned with rye, bitters, and maple syrup, a signature Maggie Loves a Marg (classic, Tommy’s, or spicy), or a Nitro Espresso Martini to finish the night on a kick. Sweet endings include peanut butter brûlée with raspberry jam, an Ice Cream Sambo with orange, wattle seed, and macadamia, or the delicate UB Mille-Feuille with passionfruit and orange blossom.

The Schoolhouse Restaurant has earned a Good Food Guide Chef’s Hat two years running – and you’ll quickly realise why. The award-winning wine list highlights benchmark Orange producers alongside Australian and international classics, making it as much a destination for vinophiles as food lovers. Whether enjoying the leafy courtyard with a local chardonnay, or enjoying an intimate dinner surrounded by history, it offers an unforgettable experience of region, heritage, and heart.

EAT: Printhie Dining

There are winery restaurants, and then there’s Printhie. Driving up through the Orange hills, past rows of vines with Mount Canobolas looming in the background, you already know this is going to be good. By the time you step along the landscaped path and see the sleek, modern cellar door – concrete walls softened by wild grasses and autumnal trees – you’ve decided Printhie won’t let you down. And that’s before a single glass has even been poured.

Inside, the design balances polish with warmth. The dining room is all clean lines and natural light, streaming through vast windows that frame vineyard views. Timber tables are paired with caramel leather chairs, while a striking sculptural ceiling installation ripples above like a soft cloud. Shelves dotted with preserves and greenery add homely detail, while the overall effect is contemporary without being intimidating. It’s the kind of place you can arrive in heels or trainers and feel equally at home.

Inside Printhie Dining: a light-filled space of timber, glass, and contemporary design that feels equal parts polished and welcoming.
Inside Printhie Dining: a light-filled space of timber, glass, and contemporary design that feels equal parts polished and welcoming.

For those after something more intimate, the private cellar is a design moment all on its own. Tucked away behind concrete walls, a long dining table sits beneath pendant lighting, flanked by shelves stacked with Printhie’s sparkling bottles. It feels secretive, indulgent, and a little bit cinematic – the perfect setting for a long lunch or special celebration.

The menu, meanwhile, is serious about flavour. Everything is seasonal, tied closely to what’s growing in the region (and even in the property’s own veggie patch). But there’s a playfulness in presentation. Starters like lamb shoulder dumplings, braised for two days, are comfort food dressed up as fine dining. The cured rainbow trout cone, served in hand-carved applewood holders from the estate orchard, has become a Printhie signature. Even if you’re not the type to Instagram your food, you’ll have your camera out.

And then, the oysters. Yes – ridiculously fresh oysters in Orange. Instead of outsourcing, Printhie built its own live oyster tank on-site. The custom set-up keeps Sydney Rocks happily bathed in Clyde River water, driven inland every few weeks. They’re shucked to order and served with a floral banksia nectar vinaigrette. Pair them with a glass of Swift’s award-winning 2016 Vintage Sparkling, and you’ve got one of the best food-and-wine matches in the country.

The striking entrance to Printhie Wines’ cellar door – one of Australia’s most exciting cool-climate dining and sparkling wine experiences.

Speaking of sparkling, Printhie’s fizz is a revelation. The 2016 Vintage, aged on lees for eight years, has just picked up trophies in both Sydney and Queensland. It’s layered with citrus, red-fruited pinot depth, and that unmistakable brioche richness – the kind of wine that makes you rethink loyalty to French labels.

But what makes Printhie truly memorable is the way it connects every detail back to place. The flowers on your plate were clipped from the garden that morning. The trout cones sit in holders carved from orchard applewood. Every vineyard block is planted with varietals matched to Orange’s soils and microclimates. Even the oysters tell a story about ambition and innovation.

So yes, the food is outstanding. Yes, the sparkling is world-class. And when you leave Printhie, you’ll spend the rest of your trip reliving the experience and wishing you could do it over and over again.

EAT: The Peacock Room & Bela Vista Bar

There’s a new name to know in Orange dining: Tiziano Botta. Swiss-born, raised on the Aussie west coast, and with a CV that spans Europe, Asia and the Middle East, he’s the new head chef at The Peacock Room and Bela Vista Bar inside the retro-chic Oriana hotel.

The Peacock Room has always been theatrical, but in the best possible way. Step inside and you’re met with a space that feels part old-world supper club, part modern stage set. Jewel-toned velvet chairs line tables decorated with cut-crystal lamps, opulent glass chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and at the centre of it all is a dramatic mural of peacocks in emerald and sapphire hues. Basically, nothing about this room is designed to fade into the background.

Inside The Peacock Room: jewel-toned velvet, glittering chandeliers, and theatrical floral displays set the stage for a night of glamour.
Inside The Peacock Room: jewel-toned velvet, glittering chandeliers, and theatrical floral displays set the stage for a night of glamour.

There’s an atmosphere here that feels celebratory, even midweek. It’s glamorous, yes, but not intimidating – more like a dinner party where the host is just super fabulous.

Under Botta, the menu matches the drama of the setting. There’s seafood vol-au-vent and lamb saddle roulade which is filled with spinach and water chestnuts, and you won’t forget the twice-baked lemon soufflé which is so light and fluffy. Classic European dishes are reimagined with Orange’s produce.

Next door, the Bela Vista Bar keeps the same spirit – jewel tones, retro glamour, oversized cocktails. It’s where you’ll want to start (or end) the night. What did I think? The Peacock Room is dining turned into theatre. It’s bold, opulent, and totally joyful. Definitely put it on your list.

EAT: Fiorini’s Osteria Italiana

Some restaurants are polished within an inch of their lives – marble counters, mood lighting, Instagram-perfect tableware. You know the type. Fiorini’s is not that. Tucked into what looks like a fibro shack on the outskirts of Orange, this osteria could easily be overlooked. But step inside and you’ll discover one of the warmest, most soulful dining experiences in town.

The sage-green corrugated iron exterior, with its rustic garden beds setting the tone before you even walk through the door. Inside, the intimacy is immediate. Dark green timber panelling frames rustic wooden tables. The walls are dotted with vintage paintings and eclectic artwork, pieces that feel like they were chosen with love rather than by a decorator. Sunlight filters through wide windows. There’s beautiful antique furniture throughout. It feels cosy and simple, as if you’re dining in someone’s home rather than a restaurant (that’s exactly the point).

In 2025, the team gained even greater momentum with the arrival of Simonn Hawke, a celebrated chef of Lolli Redini and Birdie fame. With multiple hats to her name and a deep relationship with Orange’s local producers, Hawke’s appointment feels like a coup for the region.

The kitchen is open, both literally and philosophically. From the first clang of pans, you can see the team at work, crafting plates that bridge Italian flavours with the best of local seasonality. Hawke works alongside sous chef Mirko, and together they create food that’s led by a simple philosophy. And that is, if it’s not fresh, it doesn’t make the cut.

On the menu, expect Italian classics reimagined with both respect and creativity. The burrata with melon and prosciutto is creamy, sweet, salty. Lamb cutlets are charred and juicy. With Orange’s cool-climate varietals well represented, there’s also no shortage of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz to pair with hearty fare.

What really sets Fiorini’s apart is the magic is in the details: the paddock to plate approach, the charming antiques, the rustic setting, the sound of the kitchen buzzing in the background, and of course, the fact that everything is homemade and local. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, and of course, to return again and again.

After years living between Paris and Brussels, Mexican potter Perla Valtierra returned home. Having studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, then the Belgian art school La Cambre, she’s always been fascinated by travel, crafts and ceramics in particular. It was in Japan, thanks to a research grant, that “everything became clear. It changed my perception of my practice,” she says, referring to how she embraced the Japanese art of kintsugi, which honours the beauty of imperfection through the repair of broken ceramics. It’s a revelation that defines her style and anchors her in the utilitarian object she reveres. “I love handling the objects I create; I develop rituals with each one.”

Since her “return to her roots”, the Chihuahua native has been working with artisans in her two workshops in the Bajío region, northwest of Mexico City – where she now lives. “It’s a very dynamic city, with lots of creative people and always something to do, an exhibition to see or a concert to book,” she says of the capital. “In addition to being cosmopolitan, this city is very green, contrary to appearances.”

Follow her guide as she reveals her favourite spots in the shade of the treetops.

Café El Jarocho

A classic in the Coyoacán neighbourhood. Order a café de olla (spiced coffee cooked with cinnamon and dark brown sugar) and enjoy it sitting on a plastic chair on the sidewalk, just like the locals do. Cuauhtémoc 134, Col. Del Carmen, Coyoacán

National Museum of Anthropology

Opened in 1964, this museum is dedicated to the history of the country’s pre-Hispanic civilisations as well as contemporary indigenous cultures. Templo Mayor Museum

In 1978, archaeologists unearthed the Templo Mayor, a temple that had been destroyed by the Spanish colonial empire in the 16th century. Visible from the street, it is worth the detour, as is its museum located below. Seminario 8, Centro Histórico, templomayor.inah.gob.mx

Martínez Restaurant

Mexico’s culinary scene is in a league of its own. But at this restaurant, we indulge in classic French dishes: sole meunière, vol-au-vent and duchess potatoes, with a twist of local spices. It’s a delight in a contemporary setting, with polished concrete floors and aluminium lighting. For the best table head to the counter, where you can keep your eyes fixed on the busy kitchen staff. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo’s House-Studio Museum

Designed by the couple with architect Juan O’Gorman from 1929 to 1931, this house-studio is a colourful feast for the eyes. As the only barrier to the street, a row of cacti blurs the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Diego Rivera, Col. San Ángel Inn, Álvaro Obregón

An insider’s destination for those who want to admire thousands of flowers and discover a little bit of the city off the tourist trail. Marso Foundation

“A splendid house in the heart of the city,” says Valtierra, whose showroom is located inside the building. Contramar

The restaurant that is on everyone’s recommended list. This seafood paradise, in the trendy Roma Norte neighbourhood, is housed in a huge ground-floor room where bladed fans spin at full speed under a wicker ceiling. Here, you can enjoy the specialty, tuna toast, accompanied by octopus tacos and fancy fish fingers, not to mention the delicious desserts and margaritas. Campobaja

While the fun holiday-camp atmosphere of this restaurant might initially attract you, it’s the food that will see you returning. The grand parks and public spaces in the City of Lights are well known – and well visited. But step off the boulevards and avenues and you can discover a wealth of hidden gardens and parks that only locals frequent.

Parc Monceau

A rare municipal park where you’re allowed on the grass, Monceau dates to 1778 and has long been a favourite of locals: Monet painted there and Marcel Proust visited frequently. Original features include a tiny pyramid, along with trees, lawns, flower beds, statues, waterways and bridges.

Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac

“To make a garden, you need land and eternity,” said Gilles Clément, the designer of this impressive garden conceived as an “invitation to travel”. Its seven discrete sections linked by paths create verdant and accessible grounds, flanked by a vibrant wall of greenery along the side of the museum building.

ADDRESS 37 Quai Jacques Chirac, 75007.
HOURS 10.30am to 7pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
METRO Iéna/Alma-Marceau.

Square Georges Cain

This hidden square feels like an open-air museum, notable not only for its flora (including a century-old fig tree) but for archaeological remnants such as columns and a clock face from the long-destroyed Tuileries Palace, a Renaissance era rose window and evenfragments of sarcophagi from the Merovingian dynasty. This is truly a unique experience in Paris.

ADDRESS 8 Rue Payenne, 75003.

METRO Saint Paul/Chemin Vert.

Square Félix Desruelles

This tiny garden packs quite a punch. Among the lush and shady summer greenery, its most famous feature is the art nouveau arch: 12 metres high and 10 wide, it was built for the 1900 Paris Exposition to showcase the skill of the ceramic workshops of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres. After the exposition closed, it was installed in the square in 1905.

Musée Bourdelle

In the two beautifully kept gardens of this museum are more than 50 bronzes by renowned sculptor Antoine Bourdelle (1861–1929), a student of Auguste Rodin and a teacher of both Alberto Giacometti and Henri Matisse. The benches that dot the tranquil gardens are perfect for enjoying both the sculptures (such as Sappho, right) and the many flowers that bloom among them.

HOURS 10am to 6pm, closed Monday.
METRO Montparnasse-Bienvenüe.

Jardin Lazare-Rachline

The sort of garden you might stumble upon unawares, this was created in 1974 and sits in the courtyard of the Hôtel Donon. It’s a beautiful, formal French garden, with small, carefully pruned trees, meandering gravel paths and masses of flowers in the warmer months.

HOURS 10am to 5pm, closed Tuesdays.
METRO Saint Paul.

Petit Palais

Moments from the Champs-Elysées bustle, the inner garden of the palais – where Schiaparelli shows its haute couture in fashion week – is a haven of calm. Semicircular and verdant, it nestles in a colonnaded walkway with mosaic floor. Gaze at the portico’s frescoed ceiling, and relax in a shaded deckchair.

HOURS 10am to 5.15pm, closed Mondays. Late opening Fridays.

Let’s be honest – no one dreams of packing. Actually, that’s not true. I have friends who enjoy it. Weird, I know. I don’t. I dread it. I leave it to the last minute. And then I stress. It’s the pre-trip chaos – scrambling through drawers, trying to remember where your favourite white T-shirt is, wondering how on earth you’ll zip up your case – that saps all the glamour from travel.

And yet, there’s something deeply satisfying about a perfectly packed bag. The idea that you can just bring what you need, still feel put-together, and roll through the airport like an off-duty model? (Ok, not really, but you feel good).

Over years of fashion weeks, work trips, and family breaks, I’ve crafted a travel ritual that (almost) feels just as chic as the destination. Most recently, I put it to the test in for a trip to Scotland and Paris. I left armed with two Nere cases filled with a micro-capsule wardrobe (plus a couple of dreamy gowns from Rebecca Vallance).

Here’s how I pack light and stylishly -plus the bag brand I’ve fallen in love with along the way.

Firstly, Your Travel Companion Matters

Marie Claire editor Georgie McCourt carrying Nere luggage

Yes, what you put in your suitcase is important. But what you pack it in? That’s where the magic starts. I’m a convert to Strand, an Australian-born brand with almost a century of heritage, and a very modern approach to movement.

Founded in 1927, Strand knows something most brands don’t: we’re all going somewhere. Whether you’re commuting across the city or flying halfway around the world, your luggage should move with you – not against you.

My pick? The Nere Stori 75cm Check-In Suitcase. With its sleek ABS hard shell, signature matte-black round logo, and on-trend colourways (think sage green, dusty lilac and classic noir), it turns packing into a proper fashion moment. This is the kind of luggage that looks like you’ve got your life together (side note – I don’t).

Designed For The Journey – Built To Last

Every feature of the Nere Stori has been thoughtfully crafted to make travelling smoother, sleeker, and smarter. Glide effortlessly through terminals with quiet, dual spinner wheels, and enjoy peace of mind with a recessed TSA-approved lock that keeps your belongings secure. A self-repairing zipper means minor snags won’t derail your trip, while the ergonomic soft-touch trolley handle ensures comfort at every turn.

Inside, a multi-pocket internal packing system keeps your essentials organised (read: no more frantic rummaging), and with a 10-year warranty, it’s a suitcase built for a decade of adventures – and then some.

For the full look, I paired mine with a matching cabin-size Nere for the plane. Stackable, mixable, and impossible to miss on the carousel. It’s a suitcase moment.

Packing Cubes = Peace Of Mind

Checking into the hotel with Nere luggage

Let me introduce you to the concept that changed my packing life: cubes. No, not the ice kind. Think soft-sided compartments that make your suitcase feel like a boutique wardrobe on the go.

I use one cube for tops, one for bottoms, and a smaller one for underwear and accessories. Roll your clothes (not fold) to maximise space and avoid wrinkles. I even toss in a small lavender sachet or dryer sheet – it keeps everything fresh and adds a little unexpected luxury to the unpacking process.

Wear Your Bulk. Pack the Rest.

Rule one of packing light: don’t waste case space on your heaviest pieces. Instead, wear them. For the flight to Scotland, I wore my go-to black boots and coat.

Meanwhile, my softest cashmere knit (a travel essential I never leave home without) was tucked into my carry-on, ready to double as an in-flight blanket or throw-on layer once I landed.

Nere Packing Cubes 5 Pack, $39.99
Nere Packing Cubes 5 Pack, $39.99

The Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve learned the hard way that you don’t need 14 outfits for a week-long trip. You need a capsule wardrobe that does the heavy lifting. For my recent trip, I packed:

 • A white shirt (endlessly versatile)
 • A black blazer
 • Sneakers and boots
 • Two ribbed tanks (one black, one ivory)
 • A great pair of jeans
 • A slip skirt
 • Flat suede mules
 • Plus a couple of Rebecca Vallance dresses for a fancy gala dinner

Everything mixed and matched beautifully. From breakfast meetings to to late-night cocktails, I had every base covered.

The Essentials Kit (Never Dig Through Your Bag Again)

My handbag now houses a curated pouch of travel luxuries:

 • Deodorant
 • Facial cleansing wipes
 • Travel-sized moisturiser
 • Lip balm and hydrating mist
 • Travel-sized dry shampoo
 • Earbuds and a silk eye mask
 • A mini fragrance rollerball (for mid-flight refreshes)

These come with me at all times. Because nothing kills the vibe like having to dismantle your perfectly packed suitcase for your lip balm.

A Brand That Moves With You

What I love most about Strand is its understanding of modern movement. Travel today isn’t just long-haul flights and beach resorts. It’s the daily commute, the spontaneous weekend escape, the unexpected detour. It’s style in transit.

With options that range from statement handbags to business backpacks and matching luggage suites (hello, airport aesthetic), their Nere collection in particular feels like a love letter to stylish adventurers. Bold. Functional. Effortless.

And really? That’s the goal of every good packing edit: to move with confidence, comfort and zero baggage (emotional or otherwise).

Why The Bower in Byron Bay Is the Winter Escape You Didn’t Know You Needed https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/travel/byron-bay-winter-getaway-the-bower-hotel-review/ Tue, 05 Aug 2025 02:28:00 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1288861 Luxury, wellness, and style meet Byron

The post Why The Bower in Byron Bay Is the Winter Escape You Didn’t Know You Needed appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
I’ll be honest: I don’t really do slow. As creative director at marie claire, my world is a carousel of fashion shoots, emails, and back-to-back deadlines that leaves little room for… well, anything. So, in an act of self-preservation, I did something radical: I booked a three-day winter escape to Byron Bay. And not just anywhere in Byron – to The Bower, the boutique hotel that’s become the unofficial HQ for design lovers, wellness warriors, and those in need of a reset.

Where Barefoot Byron Meets New York Cool

Think cool coastal vibes meet downtown New York grit – that’s The Bower Byron Bay in a nutshell. This boutique gem in Northern NSW takes the old-school motel and flips it into a sleek, sophisticated sanctuary that’s as stylish now as when it first opened in 2017. The owners nailed it, blending Byron’s laid-back, barefoot charm with the edgy, industrial chic of Manhattan’s Bowery. The result? A hotel that’s effortlessly elegant yet totally relaxed – part luxe hideaway, part creative playground.

Every room is its own curated haven, mixing natural textures like wood and metals with plush velvets and crisp linens, all wrapped up in a moody, neutral palette that feels both timeless and on-trend. Those century-old timber beams? Pure character. The interiors play with tradition and whimsy, making each stay feel personal and polished.

Outside, you’ll find lush tropical gardens and a dreamy magnesium pool framed by palms – the ultimate spot to chill, recharge, and soak up Byron’s artistic energy.

With just 14 beautifully appointed rooms, The Bower is your home away from home – if your home came with a minibar, espresso machine, down comforters, and 50-inch flat-screen TVs. Every room is designed for comfort and style, featuring premium bedding, designer toiletries, and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi to keep you connected (or help you switch off, your call).

Interior designer Kate Sacks described it best: “My design approach is always to create spaces with character that are unique, timeless and transcend trends.” Her goal? To take the nostalgic concept of the Aussie motel and give it a chic, bespoke twist.

Stylist Lynda Gardener, the layering queen behind the finishing touches, calls it a mix of traditional and playful: “Rooms are balanced through a mix of textures and tones – wood, metals, textiles, plush velvets and linens.”

Relaxing By The Pool (And The Spa)

Now, let’s get to the good stuff: the heated magnesium pool. The water is infused with magnesium chloride, which apparently helps with sore muscles and stress, though honestly, I didn’t need the science – I just knew I never wanted to leave.

The pool is set against lush tropical gardens, and just beside it? The Garden Bar, open daily from 11am. After a morning swim, I ordered a citrusy spritz and sank into a sun lounger under the palms, marvelling at the fact that winter here meant 22°C and no shoes.

And then came The Bower Spa. I could write an entire essay on this alone, but I’ll keep it simple: heaven. Tucked away in a leafy corner of the property, the spa is private, quiet, and utterly divine. I began with a warm foot bath, followed by the relaxation massage – a full-body treatment using aromatic oils and that kind of slow, intentional pressure that makes you wonder why you haven’t done this every week of your adult life.

But the real star was the Ultimate Indulgence treatment: 2.5 hours of ritual. A scrub, massage, customised facial using Mukti Organics, and a glass of bubbles at the end – because why not? My skin glowed, my brain turned off. It was the best kind of pampering.

Where To Dine

We loved Pixie Italian, a stunning space designed by the award-winning Flack Studio that channels the effortless cool of a nostalgic Italian summer – with a distinct Byron Bay twist. Inspired by the bold contrasts celebrated by 1970s architect Gae Aulenti, Pixie’s interiors marry vintage Italian flair with laid-back coastal vibes, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Sip a spritz on the terrace, enjoy a cocktail and snack at the bar, or settle into the chic main dining room – it’s all heavenly.

Byron In Winter Is A Serious Vibe

Here’s the thing no one tells you: Byron Bay in winter is a vibe. The crowds thin out, the skies go high-def, and the sherbet sunsets hit different. I came back relaxed, borderline insufferable about magnesium, and with a vow to never again underestimate the power of a well-designed getaway. Would I go back? Already booked. Winter? Handled.

You don’t just check into Hôtel de Crillon – you step into a living, breathing love letter to Paris. It sits poised on Place de la Concorde, but it may as well straddle two centuries. In one moment, you’re gliding past Corinthian columns and Marie Antoinette’s old piano rooms. In the next, you’re ordering CBD massage oil from a butler while admiring the ceiling of Bar Les Ambassadeurs – a ceiling, I might add, that’s officially protected as a national treasure.

Originally commissioned by Louis XV in 1758 and once home to the Count of Crillon, this palace-turned-hotel reopened in 2017 after a meticulous four-year restoration. And while it pays exquisite homage to its 18th-century bones, it doesn’t feel stuck in time. It’s timeless. A jewel box of Parisian excellence where every brass knob, velvet chair and Baccarat chandelier is telling you: you’ve arrived.

As someone who has stayed in some very special hotels, let me say this clearly: this is the best I’ve ever experienced. Everything – the marble, the lighting, the service, the silence – is a dream.

The Lobby That Speaks Of What’s To Come

Hôtel de Crillon

The entrance alone is theatre. Guests arrive not at a sterile reception desk, but into an opulently panelled antechamber, complete with plush armchairs and carved detailing. It’s the kind of space that invites you to sit, sip a tea, and recalibrate.

To the left: Butterfly Pâtisserie, glowing with the soft pinks and pistachios of world-class patisserie. To the right: Les Ambassadeurs, glittering with candlelight, live piano and a quietly decadent energy. The main hallway stretches forward like a runway, leading you to salons, dining rooms, courtyards and eventually the spa. Around every corner, another surprise: a floral installation by Djordje Varda, a Karl Lagerfeld-designed apartment, a perfectly preserved Louis XV panel.

Even check-in is elevated – handled in an intimate salon, not behind a desk. It sets the tone: this is not just hospitality. This is theatre, intimacy and reverence all rolled into one.

A Room That Feels Like A Parisian Dream

Hôtel de Crillon

My suite – one of 124 rooms, including 36 suites and 10 Signature Suites – was a masterclass in restrained opulence. Think soft dove-grey walls punctuated by powder-blue armchairs, a crystal drinks cart stocked with fine spirits, and Taschen books on Matisse nestled beside antique objets d’art. It felt both impossibly grand and quietly personal.

The bathroom? A marble sanctuary. Twin vanities, a rain shower, an in-mirror television, and a freestanding tub so deep I may have briefly time-travelled. The Officine Universelle Buly 1803 bath products, of course, were reason enough to linger. And the bed – sumptuous and cloudlike – wrapped me in Rivolta Carmignani linens that made it near impossible to leave. At one point I opened the portes-fenêtres, curled up on the chaise longue, and listened to the soft Paris rain while sipping tea. Heaven.

If you’re going all out, book the Suite Louis XV for views of the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais and Place de la Concorde, or the Suite Duc de Crillon, which retains the carved woodwork from the Count’s former private chapel – some of which now lives in the Met Museum in New York.

Dining Worthy Of Its Address

Breakfast the next morning was served in Jardin d’Hiver, where glimmering mica stone walls and fresh orchids set the mood. The menu is as elegant as the surroundings: from buttery pastries and housemade jams to the ‘Chic Breakfast’ (think eggs any way, smoked salmon and a mimosa in hand before 9am).

For lunch, I wandered into Comestibles, the chic little deli space set in the hotel’s courtyard. It’s perfect for a lighter bite – salads, sandwiches and pâté so delicate it should come with a warning label.

That night, I dined at Nonos, the newest restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Paul Pairet. The menu is classic French grill, reimagined. We started with Pairet’s reworked tzatziki and warm focaccia, followed by a roast of the day marinated in teriyaki and paired with a carafe of Château Gassier’s exclusive rosé, made just for Hôtel de Crillon. It’s Paris, with a twist.

And Butterfly Pâtisserie deserves its own paragraph. Headed by Matthieu Carlin, it’s an ode to confectionery couture. My favourite? The yuzu tart – sharp, silky, unforgettable.

Cocktails Under A Historic Ceiling

Hôtel de Crillon

Bar Les Ambassadeurs is the kind of place you’ll want to cancel your plans for. Once the hotel’s ballroom, its soaring, frescoed ceiling has been lovingly restored and paired with low lighting, velvet banquettes and a cocktail menu disguised as a board game. You roll the dice, land on a flavour note – herbal, smoky, spicy – and let the mixologist guide your adventure. I started with an espresso martini and ended with something so smoky and citrusy it felt like Paris in a glass.

The Spa: Serenity With 17,000 Gold Scales

Beneath it all lies Sense, A Rosewood Spa, a tranquil cocoon of pale stone, flickering candles and hushed corridors. The swimming pool – lined with 17,000 shimmering gold scales – glistens beneath a glass roof. There are eucalyptus steam rooms, heated stone beds, and a Himalayan salt wall that seems to absorb the stress of city life.

A Neighbourhood That Steals Your Heart

Hôtel de Crillon
Image: Supplied

Crillon’s location is unbeatable. Step outside and you’re in the heart of the city’s Golden Triangle. The Louvre is minutes away, as are the Tuileries, Musée de l’Orangerie, and the boutiques of Rue Saint-Honoré. On lazy afternoons, the concierge can book a cruise on the Seine, or arrange for you to be chauffeured in the hotel’s custom 1973 Citroën DS – an icon of French cool, fully restored by interior designer Tristan Auer.

Sustainability, The Subtle Way

It’s not often a palace hotel thinks about its footprint, but Crillon is quietly progressive. Beauty products come in recyclable aluminium tubes, plastic is avoided wherever possible, and room keys are made from sustainably sourced wood. In the kitchens, fish and vegetables are locally sourced, and the spa’s products favour botanicals over synthetics. Even the staff uniforms – redesigned by Hugo Matha – favour comfort and circular fashion.

Final Thoughts? Just Book It.

Hôtel de Crillon is all about thoughtful detail, living history, and slow-burning luxury. If you’re looking for the best hotel in Paris – the hotel that will spoil you, ground you and absolutely ruin you for all others – this is it.

And if you’re lucky? You’ll never want to check out.

Marie Claire Recommends:

 • Don’t miss: the CBD massage and cocktails at Les Ambassadeurs
 • Book now: Suite Louis XV for the ultimate Eiffel Tower view
 • Bring: your most glamorous outfit – and your appetite
 • Best moment: slipping into that bed, rain tapping on the balcony
 • Final tip: Ask your butler to book a floral design workshop. Très chic.

Forget what anyone tells you, travelling light is an art, and there’s definitely a feeling of slight (self) superiority that comes from being able to nail your carry-on essentials. Because, let’s face it, you might have meticulously planned the contents of your checked suitcase, but it’s no use to you stowed away.

What really matters on the flight (especially a long-haul one) is what you’ve managed to fit within your on-board allowance, so once you’ve selected your chic carry-on luggage, it’s time to start curating your cabin-ready picks.

Whether you like to keep your seven-step skincare regime going while sky high, or settle in with an on-board beauty routine that’ll have you touching down ten years younger, there’s a winning carry-on combination for everyone.

But when it comes to my own personal preferences, I refuse to compromise on the tried and true basics that work overtime in the air, and on the ground.

Scroll on for the best on-board basics to keep you comfortable from take-off, to touchdown.

A marie claire Editor’s Carry-On Essentials

 1. Slip Lovely Lashes Contour Sleep Mask, $60, Sephora (here’s why)
 2. OnTrac Noise-Cancelling Headphones, $799, Dyson (here’s why)
 3. Metro Hanging Toiletry Case, $145, Monos (here’s why)

7 Carry-On Essentials For Travel

Carry-on essentials Slip lovely lashes black contour sleep mask

01

Slip Lovely Lashes Contour Sleep Mask

$60 at Sephora

Best for: Sleeping in style

While I can’t vouch for this sleep mask’s ability to send you into a blissful slumber (as sadly, I can’t sleep on planes), what this mask does do, is provide a silky soft blockade between me and the outside world. As someone who’s conditioned my brain to the wonders of a sleep mask (on land), there’s no travelling without it for me, and this contoured version equals top-tier comfort for my tired eyes. Plus, if you’re anything like me and are constantly rummaging around in the bottom of your bag in search of your carry-on essentials, then the festive print makes it easier to spot.

02

OnTrac Noise-Cancelling Headphones

$799 at Dyson

Best for: Zoning out

I’m definitely partial to my AirPods when on the ground, but when I’m travelling, there’s nothing that makes me panic more than the thought of losing them, so I tend to leave them behind for safekeeping. Enter the over-the-ear substitutes – the perfect combination of noise-cancelling and comfort. With a 55-hour battery life – enough to withstand the longest of long haul flights – and up to 9 hours from just a 30-minute charge, the new Dyson OnTrac headphones are an investment worth making. I love the customisable ear caps (khaki for me, thanks) and the cushioned strap that’s one of the only models on the market that doesn’t leave my head aching after hours of use. Plus, there’s no need to swap these out when it comes time to switching on the entertainment with the handy Dyson in-flight adaptor.

Monos carry-on essentials hang on toiletry case

03

Metro Hanging Toiletry Case

$145 at Monos

Best for: Compact convenience

A place for everything, and everything in its place. As far as my toiletries are concerned, if I can’t fit them into a single bag – they’re not coming on board! I only recently discovered the lifechanging convenience of a hanging toiletry case, which seemingly designed with some kind of Mary Poppins-esque magic, manages to be both ludicrously capacious and compact. Go figure! Whatever stitching sorcery is going on here is not for me to judge, but its mix of function and form had me hooked from the very first use, and being able to take it back and forth from the minute cabin bathroom with ease is always a win!

Among myriad other benefits, One Dines Free gives you one complimentary main course when dining at partner restaurants across Asia Pacific. 05

Assembly Label Bateau Organic Long Sleeve Tee

$56 (usually $70) at The Iconic

Best for: Chic comfort

I cannot stress just how much I value super comfy clothing on a flight. But, that doesn’t mean you’ll be catching me in my Sunday Best (read: sweatpants) in public any time soon. That’s why I reach for elevated boarding basics like this Assembly Label organic cotton number time and time again. With its super soft finish and loose-but-luxe silhouette, it’s my Goldilocks go-to (not too-cold, not too-hot) that deserves its place on any top carry-on essentials list.

The Ordinary Lip Peptide Balm Carry-on essentials travel

06

The Ordinary Squalene + Amino Acids Lip Balm

$16 at Sephora

Best for: Multitasking hydration

I would say I’ve becoming a little bit of a balm aficionado over the years, and this newbie has managed to secure its place among the top contenders on my lip-loving list. What I like about The Ordinary Squalene + Amino Acids balm, is the silky texture that leaves a hydrating gloss without a sticky residue. Also, the formula makes for a fantastic cuticle cream, which especially when dealing with the dehydrating cabin air, can definitely come in handy.

07

Strand Venture Dual Open 76cm Suitcase

$270 at Strand

Best for: Packing it all up

Say hello to Nere Venture, the travel companion that’s as stylish as it is functional. With a sleek, scratch-resistant shell, clever dual openings, and compartments designed for people who pack with purpose, it’s made for travellers who like their luggage as put-together as their outfits. Bonus? It won’t break the bank.

The Seven-Seater Electric SUV That’s A Seriously Luxe Drive https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/travel/seven-seater-electric-suv-volvo-ex90-review/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 22:46:42 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1284808 Volvo keeps on surprising us all

The post The Seven-Seater Electric SUV That’s A Seriously Luxe Drive appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
Picture this: rolling South Australian hills, a golden sunrise, and a sleek, all-electric SUV waiting patiently outside a charming country hotel. That’s exactly how I met the new Volvo EX90 – a big, beautiful seven-seater that’s quietly rewriting the rules on what an SUV can be.

Now, I get it. When you think “Volvo,” your mind probably jumps to words like safe and sensible. But Volvo’s come a long way since those boxy wagons (and other more scene-stealing versions) of yesteryear. The new generation of electric Volvos – like the elegant luxe EX90 – is proof they’re not just safe – they’re sleek and polished with that unmistakable Scandi cool. So brag worthy.

The Electric SUV That’s Big But Not Bulky

At first glance the EX90 is impressive – we’re talking seven seats, over five metres long, so it’s undeniably a presence on the road. But surprisingly, it doesn’t feel like you’re driving a lumbering beast. Thanks to clever engineering, it handles with the agility of a sporty car, even if you’re carting around seven passengers (or seven seats’ worth of gear and kids).

Inside, it’s Scandinavian minimalism at its best. Think bright, airy spaces, soft timber trims that whisper “quiet luxury”, buttery leather seats (some even offer massage – yes please!), and a giant touchscreen that controls everything from your climate to your playlist.

Speaking of playlists, the speaker system performs for both that Adele singalong with your besties, or if you’re catching up on the latest episode of your true crime podcast. And that panoramic roof? It’s a total gamechanger for mood and light that will flood you with enough sunshine dopamine for days.

The control panel of new Volvo EX 90 electric SUV

Let’s Talk Safety. Because Volvo

For the brand that practically invented the concept of car safety, Volvo has stepped it up a notch with the EX90. Thanks to its network of cameras, sensors and radars this SUV is basically wrapped in a high-tech safety cocoon – spotting dangers even before you do. Plus the new Pilot Assist system helps with lane changes and keeps you centred in your lane. It’s the kind of help that’s subtle, but oh-so appreciated, especially on long drives when fatigue can creep in.

When it comes to performance, what is surprising is that this giant SUV is fast. Like, really fast. This isn’t just a big, safe family mover – it’s a performance SUV with some serious zip. The Ultra model rockets from zero to 100 km/h in under five seconds, which gives classic zippy sportscar vibes. Even better, the ride is super smooth and whisper quiet. The suspension and braking system is so gentle your passengers won’t spill a drop of their coffee (or their wine – hey we were in South Australia!), even when the road gets bumpy or twisty like on those Barossa Valley curves. It may be a massive size but it certainly doesn’t feel like it when you’re behind the wheel.

The third row in the luxe Volvo EX90 electric SUV
The seven-seater Volvo EX90 electric SUV boasts plenty of space – even in the third row

An Electric SUV That’s Family-Friendly And Luxe

When it comes to space the EX90 doesn’t mess around. Unlike competitors it actually has a real third row. It’s comfy enough for kids (or adults on short trips), and the middle seats slide forward to give you extra luggage room when you need it. Inside, there’s thoughtful little touches everywhere, like a built-in booster seat in the middle row and quad-zone climate control to keep everyone comfortable.

Eco-Friendly & Future-Focused

Finally, Volvo is serious about the sustainability. From the materials inside the cabin to the way this SUV is built, the EX90 isn’t just about looks and sophistication – it is designed with the planet in mind. So while you’ll be loving the new elevated look and design, you can also feel good about your eco footprint. If you’re thinking of going electric but have range anxiety (that’s when you’re worried if the car will run out of juice before you reach the next recharge station), the EX90 has you covered with a range of a massive 570km on a full charge.

Bottom line? The Volvo EX90 feels like a grown-up, glamorous, tech-savvy SUV that doesn’t compromise on safety or sustainability. It’s proof that safety and family-friendly don’t have to be boring or basic. It’s big and bold but refined, fast but thoughtful, tech-savvy but intuitive. And yes, it’s got that subtle Scandinavian chic that demands attention – without trying too hard.

If you’re tired of settling for “safe and sensible” then the luxe EX90 is how you go electric with style. Dare you.

You Can’t Skip These Designer Vintage Stores On Your Next Japan Trip https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/travel/where-to-designer-vintage-shopping-japan/ Mon, 16 Jun 2025 02:02:23 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1284579 Nothing beats the thrill of a rare thrift find

The post You Can’t Skip These Designer Vintage Stores On Your Next Japan Trip appeared first on marie claire.

For lovers of vintage fashion, shopping in Japan is unlike anywhere in the world. A treasure trove of designer thrift and consignment stores, the island country is a haven for shoppers with a penchant for labels.

From major vintage chain stores like Ragtag and Bookoff to local secrets, the sheer scale of Japan’s vintage store offering can feel overwhelming.

So, we turned to one of our favourite shopping and travel creators, Sam Todd, whose Japan thrifting videos we simply can’t get enough of, to share all her tips…

@samjtodd

Replying to @Kaila🩷 Disney Creator🐭 Hope you don’t mind the drums in the background 🤣🤣🤣 The Kōenji Awa Odori Festival was happening directly outside the @atlantisvintagetokyo shop door 🎎🥁👏🏻💃🏻 ✨ #atlantisvintage #atlantisvintagetokyo #japanshopping #vintagedesigner #secondhanddesigner #shoppinginjapan

To begin, Sam recommends carving out enough time to shop to your heart’s content. For us, that time limit doesn’t exist, but she does note that finding your dream bag, watch, or accessory won’t be a matter of walking into the first thrift shop you come across.

“You’re going to need time! The reason I find so many bags is because I comb through so many stores. And the truth is, 90% of the time I don’t find anything,” she tells marie claire Australia.

“Set aside a couple of days on your trip dedicated solely to digging through second hand designer stores and hopefully you’ll hit the jackpot.”

She also recommends starting your vintage shopping further out of the city.

“The further you go out from central Tokyo, the cheaper the bags are going to be.

“I suggest starting shopping in the outer cities and making your way in towards Shibuya/Shinjuku. That way, when you get into the city centre, you’ll know if you can get a better price elsewhere,” she explains.

Finally, if you have your heart set on a specific item, you can and should reach out to consignment stores in advance.

“If you’re chasing a particular bag, your best bet is to message a store ahead of time – I recommend Atlantis Vintage – and have them secure the bag for you in advance,” Sam suggests.

Where To Go Designer Vintage Shopping In Japan, According To Sam Todd

Atlantis Vintage (Koenji, Tokyo)

“If you follow me on social media, you’ll know this is my all time favourite store in Japan. Atlantis Vintage (Koenji) is a modest store just a few train stops out of central Tokyo (Shibuya/Shinjuku area) which means that they don’t have to compete with the inflated pricing in those areas,” Sam says.

“You’re guaranteed to find the bag you’re looking for much cheaper at Atlantis, and if they don’t have it, Yuji will do his best to source it for you. You can DM him on Instagram ahead of your trip with your bag wish list & he will work his magic to find it! Yuji has a fun, eclectic style & they always keep an amazing curation of bags in store that reflects that – think vintage Louis Vuitton x Murakami, rare colourful Chanel flap bags & lots of Balenciaga City/Town bags!”

Vintage QOO (Omotesando, Tokyo)

“Rather than shop here, I more so treat this store like a museum. They keep an expansive range of archival designer pieces, most notably Chanel. There is a wall with an entire rainbow of vintage Chanel bags, cabinets upon cabinets of costume jewellery and even ready to wear pieces – though you’re looking at $10k AUD for a T-shirt,” she explains.

“It’s a rite of passage to visit here when you come to Tokyo, and just across the street is Amore Vintage which is also a shrine to vintage Chanel!”

BOOKOFF PLUS (Namba Ebisubashi, Osaka)

“Historically, this particular store is where I have had the most luck finding second hand Coach bags! A lot of the higher end stores don’t carry Coach, so your best bet is a Bookoff or 2nd Street,” Sam tells us.

“This Bookoff is located on a really popular shopping street in Osaka (which is full of second hand designer stores!), but this store is my favourite. I’ve found Coach Pillow Tabbys & Coach novelty shaped bags here, all for a few hundred dollars each. Plan a shopping day in Osaka & start here, then wander your way down Shinsaibashi Shotengai perusing all of the other secondhand designer stores.”

2nd Street (Japan-wide)

“Similar to Bookoff, 2nd Street is known to sell low-mid tier brands & here is where you can find some serious bargains. This is a fabulous chain that you can find ALL over Japan, wherever you’re at just type in 2nd Street on Google Maps & I have no doubt at least one will pop up,” she says.

“They carry a lot of indie brands, handmade pieces & Coach, of course. You might have to do some digging through all the racks, but you can definitely find gems here. My best find at 2nd Street was a hand beaded Susan Alexandra bag that retails for almost $800 – I got it for $150.”

Rag Tag (Ginza, Tokyo)

“I’d like to give an honourable mention to where potentially my greatest secondhand designer find of all time occurred. Ginza is a very affluent area in Tokyo, so naturally the secondhand designer bags that are available here are very premium,” Sam details.

‘They often carry super current & elusive pieces. Imagine my surprise when I walked in one day and found a brand new Prada Crystal Re-Edition for just 40% of the RRP! Of course I immediately snatched it up and have treasured it ever since! This Rag Tag has multiple floors sorted by brand & is always fun to look through.”

8 essentials every mum needs according to Renée-Claire Bargh https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/health-wellness/8-essentials-every-mum-needs/ Tue, 27 May 2025 23:07:50 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1282796 From self-care to strollers.

The post 8 essentials every mum needs according to Renée-Claire Bargh appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
The parenting journey is a wonderful balance of joy and carefully choreographed chaos.

For new mum-of-two, and Australian Television Presenter Renée Bargh, it’s all about finding those small wins – whether that be with versatile products, wellness rituals, or routines that bring a little more ease (and a lot more calm) to everyday life.

From the early morning rush to beachside resets and everything in between, Bargh appreciates the value of products that prioritise quality and style, and how they have the ability to save time and reduce stress.

Following the birth of her second child, Soleil, Bargh is embracing the joyful chaos of motherhood with a toolkit designed to ease the load, keep her grounded, and help her stay present for the moments that truly matter most.

Whether you’re heading out for a day with your little ones or carving out five sacred minutes of alone time, here are the 8 essentials every mum needs.

For when you’re out and about

At the top of Bargh’s everyday essentials list? A reliable, flexible pram that can keep up with her fast-paced and ever-changing routine.

Her pick: the Bugaboo Kangaroo.

“My first impression was that it offered excellent storage space, which is ideal for day-to-day outings, and rare to find with tandem prams.” The design of the Bugaboo Kangaroo is not only incredibly chic, but it seamlessly blends form and functionality with over 20 flexible configurations.

The bassinet sits up high for easy access to bub, while her toddler loves sitting up front and facing outwards, enjoying the ride. When it’s time for a little more fun, Bargh switches out the front seat for the toddler board, “which makes all the difference when you’re on the go!”

Having a well-stocked pram is essential for the busy mum on the go, and with a great range of storage space in the Bugaboo Kangaroo, Bargh’s pram caddy is packed with mum-life must-haves.

“I’ve always got my bottle of Koala Eco hand sanitiser handy, especially for park hangs (hello germs), and sunscreen is a non-negotiable for me and the kids. I’ve always got a huge bottle of water in the pram as I’m feeding both babies and need to stay hydrated.”

The Bugaboo Kangaroo is crafted from bio-based materials, with a reduced carbon footprint, meaning not only are you “choosing something better for the planet, but you’re also still getting top-quality design.”

For when you need some me time

While self-care definitely looks a little different these days for Bargh, carving out some time to move her body can make a huge impact. “I’ve just started getting back into Pilates, which I’m loving. Otherwise, running down to the beach for a swim or having a sauna is absolute bliss – any moments to myself are few and far between, but essential!”

Trying to juggle family, work, and a personal life can sometimes feel like an impossible feat, but it’s the little things that can help to make you feel more grounded and less overwhelmed.

A quiet moment to herself, reading in the bath with a good magnesium soak, or indulging in a massage every now and then, can make all the difference. By taking the time to fill your own cup, you’ll find you’re more present and able to truly enjoy all the special moments with your family.

Sydney’s Darling Harbour has long played host to the city’s more theatrical gestures – fireworks on weekends, water taxis, and crowds that ebb and flow between Barangaroo and the ICC. And now, it’s home to the W Sydney hotel.

From the outside, the hotel is impossible to miss – a blue ribbon of glass and steel, curved like a wave against the skyline. It’s playful, futuristic, and already one of the most talked-about hotels in the city. Inside, the theatrics continue in a way that feels considered, contemporary, and distinctly Sydney.

This is a hotel with a pulse. The lobby (or “Living Room,” as W brands it) sets the tone. Think neon-lit nooks, bold art pieces, and a soundtrack that might make you hang around longer than planned. But energy alone doesn’t carry a property, and W Sydney – while exuberant – takes the details very seriously.

Inside W Sydney’s Guestrooms

Guestrooms feel like capsules from a marine dreamscape. Think deep blues, circular motifs, and design nods to the harbour just beyond the glass. Even standard rooms are fitted with oversized soaking tubs, Davines amenities, and 55-inch TVs, while suites – particularly the aptly named Extreme Wow Suite – offer expansive views and lounge-like living spaces. The minibar, or “Mixbar,” is stocked for in-room cocktail creation, a reminder that here, staying in can be just as social as going out.

And for those looking to unwind, the AWAY Spa on Level Two offers a different kind of energy – calm and serene. Only, this isn’t your standard wellness space. Neutral tones with graphic pops, social manicure and pedicure stations, and a small bar serving light bites and post-treatment drinks. It’s spa culture, but with a lot of personality. There are five treatment rooms, including a suite for couples, as well as a sauna, steam room, and relaxation zone.

Fitness enthusiasts have access to the FIT gym, open 24 hours and stocked with Technogym equipment. And for those who prefer their wellness with a view, two pools beckon. The WET Pool on Level 22 is an indoor, light-soaked retreat, while the WET Deck on Level 29 is a rooftop oasis complete with cocktails, skyline views, and a scene that begins at golden hour and lingers into the night.

Dining at BTWN

Much of the hotel’s social orbit revolves around BTWN, its signature restaurant perched on Level Three. Under the direction of newly appointed Head Chef Matt Bentley, the restaurant has undergone a quiet transformation. Bentley, who has spent his career in Michelin-starred kitchens across the UK and Europe, brings a sharp eye for balance to BTWN’s new autumn menu.

There are reimagined comfort dishes like Red Leicester and cider scones, slathered with a rarebit. There’s a roasted yellow belly flounder, flanked by a warm tartare sauce and Sydney cockles. And the Gooralie Farm Berkshire pork cutlet is grilled to perfection and finished with a classic sauce Charcutière. The wine list is local, and dessert is handled by none other than Janice Wong, the celebrated Singaporean pastry chef renowned for her sculptural sweets.

You could come here for a quiet solo retreat and never feel out of place, or host a weekend-long celebration that spills from pool to rooftop.

W Sydney Is Serving the Most Luxe Martini Moment This June

Martini season has arrived—and W Sydney is making it a main event. In partnership with Belvedere, the hotel has launched an exclusive Turn Up Service for suite guests: think a private, in-room martini ritual featuring the ultra-premium Belvedere 10, mixed to your exact preferences.

Downstairs at BTWN, you’ll find three limited-edition martinis paired with gourmet bites for just $25. And on June 21, aka World Martini Day, hotel guests are treated to complimentary mini martinis. Cheers to that!

The Sydney Stay That’ll Make You Cancel Your Plans

Located steps from the city’s vibrant Darling Quarter and Barangaroo precincts, the hotel is well-positioned for exploring. But many guests, once checked in, find themselves staying put. The design alone is a journey. Corridors curve and twist and light fixtures nod to surf culture.

The verdict? It’s a hotel that’s not only worth writing home about, but one that makes you want to stay up a little later, swim a little longer, and ultimately, come back for seconds.

Melbourne Place, the city’s latest addition to its hospitality landscape, opened its doors last November at 130 Russell Street. Designed by local firm Kennedy Nolan, the 14-storey hotel pays homage to Melbourne’s historic architecture with its brick-and-masonry exterior, while introducing modern elements like a sculptural façade and large circular rooftop windows. The building’s design integrates traditional materials with contemporary aesthetics.

Inside, the hotel features 191 rooms and suites, each adorned with a warm palette of magenta, indigo, and green, complemented by Jarrah wood furnishings. The rooms are designed to offer a chic and calming retreat amidst the bustling city, with amenities like oversized soak tubs (yes, please) and custom-designed furniture by local artisans. It’s all very cool (this is Melbourne, after all).

The Rooms

We’re in the Everyday King, which feels more like a stylish flat than a hotel room. There’s an excellent bed (king-sized, Frette linen), urban views, and a sculptural armchair that’s not just there for show. A sleek desk makes it easy to set up with a laptop. The bathroom, with its Leif products and walk-in rain shower, is all clean lines and good lighting. Melbourne Place may be new, but it’s nailed the balance between comfort and cool.

The Dining Situation

Melbourne Place hosts three dining venues, each offering a unique culinary experience. On the rooftop, Mid Air, led by hatted chef Nick Deligiannis, serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes that blend flavors from Greece, Turkey, Spain, and Italy. The menu features items like baked eggs with chorizo and spanner crab rosti, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Yum. You’ll want to return time and again.

At street level, Marmelo, the first Melbourne venture by Ross and Sunny Lusted, offers a menu influenced by the coastal cuisines of Portugal and Spain. Dishes include wood-grilled southern calamari and suckling pig shoulder, cooked over a custom-built charcoal grill. The basement bar, Mr Mills, provides a late-night setting with Iberian-inspired small plates and an extensive cocktail menu.

There’s also Mr Mills, the basement supper club, where the vibe is darker, the cocktails stronger, and the Iberian menu better than it needs to be for a hotel bar.

Celebrating Local Talent

Art plays a central role in Melbourne Place’s identity. Curated by MARS Gallery, the hotel showcases works by local artists, including vibrant portraits by Atong Atem displayed on each floor. The lobby features a two-storey digital screen exhibiting works from six Australian artists, reflecting the city’s dynamic art scene.

The hotel’s interiors continue this celebration of local craftsmanship, with custom furniture and fixtures designed by Australian artisans. From terrazzo tiles by Fibonacci to lighting by Volker Haug, each element contributes to a cohesive design that honours Melbourne’s creative community.

Modern Comforts

Beyond its design and culinary offerings, Melbourne Place provides a range of amenities for guests. If you’re the kind of person who packs their trainers and actually uses them, we admire you. The hotel features a 24-hour fitness center equipped with cardio machines and strength training equipment. For events, the Emerald space accommodates up to 250 guests and includes an open-air terrace overlooking Russell Street.

Sustainability is integral to Melbourne Place. The building is carbon neutral, incorporating features like passive solar shading and locally sourced materials to reduce its environmental impact. Garden spaces designed by Amanda Oliver bring greenery into the urban setting, enhancing the guest experience while promoting ecological responsibility.

Melbourne Place is the kind of hotel you recommend to friends who are over the big-name stays and want something more personal. It’s ideal for design lovers, work travellers who still want to enjoy themselves, and anyone with a soft spot for strong hospitality and great lighting.

No spa, no pool – but honestly, you won’t care. Not when you’re waking up in a Jardan chair with sun spilling across your bed, or sipping a spicy margarita on the rooftop.

The post Inside the Real-Life Resorts Behind White Lotus Season 3 – And Yes, You Can Stay There appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
There’s a certain seduction in the way HBO’s hit series The White Lotus paints its destinations – a dreamscape of shimmering waters, lush greenery and lavish lodgings, all while maintaining an underlying sense of exclusivity. The drama – and there’s plenty of it – unfolds against backdrops so idyllic you’re quick to forget the chaotic nature of the show. The latest season, the third, is set on Thailand’s Koh Samui island. Interestingly, much of the plot, which uses the plush surroundings, exotic wildlife and Thai culture to further the narrative, was conjured by series director and mastermind Mike White during a medically induced hallucination.

White was initially hesitant to shoot in Thailand, but while being treated at a Thai hospital for severe bronchitis, inspiration struck. The White Lotus producer David Bernad told The Hollywood Reporter, “I saw Mike the next morning, and he told me what he’d hallucinated. That’s basically what we shot.”’

The White Lotus Effect: Turning Destinations Into Designer Tourism

Thanks to the virality (“Piper, noooo,” anyone?) and initial success of this season, Koh Samui is poised to become a bustling hub for luxury tourism. It’s called The White Lotus effect, the travel boom that unfolds after each hotly anticipated season and transforms locales into zeitgeist designer destinations.

The first season, which launched in 2021, used Maui’s winding coastline and the Four Seasons Resort Maui hotel to set the scene. Four Seasons has said that led to a 425 per cent uptick in website visits and a 386 per cent increase in availability checks. Season 2, which starred the formidable Jennifer Coolidge, saw audiences flocking to Sicily in pursuit of an eccentric la dolce vita lifestyle, and the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace Taormina was reportedly booked out for six months post-airing. Season 3 has already inspired another tourism boom, with a 65 per cent spike in searches for Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui. Unlike previously, season 3 was shot at an array of hotels – as many as seven. The Four Seasons Koh Samui, priced from $3000 a night, was the official hotel of the series. But a large portion was also shot at the Anantara chain destinations: Lawana Koh Samui Resort, Mai Khao Phuket Villas, and Bophut Koh Samui Resort.

Behind the Scenes at the Real Resorts

The Anantara resorts were a perfect White Lotus fit, with the Phuket Villas, for example, boasting a lotus-filled central lagoon that snaked between the feathery gardens, spas, recreational centres and 5-star rooms. The lagoon, an alluring mossy green, played a pivotal part in setting the tone for this season. Without giving too much away, the opening scene saw one of the characters submerged in the lagoon after frantically fleeing the stark sound of gunshots amid ghastly shrieks. The lagoon is patrolled by some (seemingly) friendly monitor lizards, one of which managed to nab a White Lotus cameo of their own.

Mai Khao Phuket Villas resort has 83 private villas cocooned by tropical gardens and the aforementioned lagoon. Luxuriously spacious and secluded, these sanctuaries feature their own private pool, deck and outdoor bathtub – heaven! The villas played home for the returning character of Belinda, and were also featured in some of the spa montages. Taking inspiration from this season, the resort’s restaurant has released a designer dining adventure named the Lotus Experience that takes place in a bespoke beach set up. The stretch of pristine beach overlooks the Andaman Sea and is particularly dreamy at sunset. The evening is centred on a menu that heroes the lotus flower, celebrating its versatility, unique flavour and influence in Thai cuisine. The tom kha lotus, a creamy coconut milk soup that includes lotus root, kaffir lime leaves, fresh lemongrass and tender chicken, is a sumptuous stand-out. Equally deserving of a mention is the sang kaya med bua dessert, a sweet coconut custard infused with lotus seeds and steamed lotus flower.

Living the Lotus Life: Spa Rituals, Cocktails and Culture

While you’re there, mosey into the hotel’s acclaimed Bua Bar. Its premium cocktail offerings range from richly sweet to deliciously bitter and tangy, with grandeur presentation across the board. The Whisper of Lotus is a must-try, featuring a smoke bubble dome that, once popped, lifts the ice cube upwards in a swan-like movement. It’s the culmination of science, art and Thailand’s knack for dramatic flair, all in beverage format. A stone’s throw away on the other side of Phuket, you will find the newly opened Layan Life by Anantara.

Perched between cascading mountains of forest trees, the impressive three-storey oasis with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls offers a comprehensive wellness experience that integrates traditional Thai healing practices with modern medical advancements. Bespoke consultations and tailored treatments are prescribed with their four key pillars in mind: longevity medicine, traditional Thai medicine, complementary medicine, and lifestyle medicine. The space is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities like vitality pools, saunas and fitness studios (there are many). A variety of treatments incorporate local traditions and techniques; for instance, the Pao Ya Heated Herbal Therapy uses heat and herbs to support digestion and reduce fluid retention. High-powered technical treatments such as cryotherapy, hypobaric oxygen therapy, and colonic hydrotherapy are also available. It’s the holistic, diagnostics-backed approach to wellness that equips guests with a new lease on life.

Arriving at Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort, things will appear familiar to White Lotus fans. The tree-lined entrance will take you past a security station (thankfully manned), around the employee parking lot (where Jason Isaacs’ character may have partaken in one too many frantic phone calls) and to the famous three-monkey statue.

Stepping out, we’re greeted by staff member Sandy, affectionately known as the Lotus Queen, who ushers us through the familiar lobby and into a welcome space. As we’re handed a butterfly pea tea, a Thai tradition to welcome guests, we’re told the room we’re standing in had been transformed during filming into a jewellery store (where a certain robbery took place). “It’s incredible how they transformed these rooms: the crew brought full sets of furniture, vases, pillows,” says Thomas, the hotel manager. “They let us keep some of the pillows actually.” Thomas enthuses about the filming experience.

“We hit the jackpot. Mike [White] and the team displayed such attention to detail and care about portraying the Thai community and culture – it was incredible to witness.” Quizzed on similarities between the characters and real-life patrons, he’s quick to dispel a few. “We don’t have any LWWs [losers without wives, an archetype referenced in the show]. But for the most part [the characters] are not so different to the guest we see walk through. I’ve definitely met a few Patrick Schwarzeneggers – that does happen. The hotel staff are a lot more sane in real life, though.”

As we explore the grounds, it’s hard not to be impressed by the impeccable landscaping and garden, designed by the renowned Bill Bensley. With closer attention, you’ll notice a great many playful sandstone monkey statuettes and intricate gilded Buddhas throughout. “This was a conscious choice,” says Thomas. “We wanted to celebrate southern Thai heritage and its rich culture. We want it to be an authentic experience of true Thai hospitality on the island.”

Staying at the lush oasis, days can be spent drifting between infinity pools and golden shores, with the hotel set against the tranquil waters of the Gulf of Thailand. If pit-stopping at the spa (also featured in the series), the signature Lotus Indulgence Experience is the gold-standard of what a massage should be, and its concoction of lotus oil and herbal remedies gently massaged into the skin will take you to pure bliss.

As day turns to night, the Singing Bird Lounge at Anantara Lawana is the place to be. Mounted high (the view is incredible) and surrounded by jungle-like flora, the bar that appeared on screen early in the season is full of charismatic ambience. Along with its wide variety of signature cocktails, it’s unveiled a range of White Lotus inspired drinks. A twist on the spicy margarita, the tequila-based The Mook blends orange and cranberry in a nod to the White Lotus staffer. A quick meander will take you to Tree Tops Signature Dining for a gourmet experience in which locally sourced and sustainable ingredients are transformed into elegant dishes that honour the Thai cuisine (over eight incredibly delicious courses). There’s a distinct level of care taken with each dish, each room, each moment of your stay. In fact, this level of care permeates every facet of the Anantara White Lotus experience. It’s the perfect intersection of nature, hospitality and luxury – minus the drama.

It isn’t easy to impress a beach snob. I’ve seen a lot of beaches in my time – beaches where the sand squeaks like white sugar, beaches where the ocean is so flat it looks ironed. Still, stepping onto Natadola Bay, I’m speechless.

Two kilometres of flawless white sand curves along a turquoise bay so perfect it borders on ridiculous. Somewhere behind it – framed by tropical gardens dense with hibiscus and the occasional nonchalant lizard – sprawls the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. It’s five stars, naturally, but not in that brash, look-at-me way. The luxury here is quietly confident.

The journey from Nadi International Airport takes about 55 minutes, although time behaves strangely in Fiji – slows down, turns soft at the edges. By the time you pull up under the soaring, thatched porte-cochère, you’re already half-feral with relaxation.

Village Life, Reimagined

The resort is designed as a kind of fantasia of a traditional Fijian village, all pitched roofs, timber beams and air perfumed with frangipani. But don’t be fooled – the ‘village’ comes with Cleopatra bathtubs, private terraces, and beds big enough to lose yourself in for days.

There are 266 rooms and suites, yet the clever layout – think winding paths and tucked-away courtyards – means it never feels like a theme park. Every so often you catch a glimpse of the ocean, sparkling smugly in the distance, just in case you forgot where you were.

Suite Dreams

Then there’s the Natadola Suite. A three-bedroom hilltop hideout that feels more like a very chic friend’s private villa than a hotel suite. Think sweeping views, a private plunge pool, and a design sensibility that whispers ‘Fiji’ without beating you over the head with seashell motifs. (Also: exclusive access to the Club InterContinental lounge, where the drinks flow like common sense on holiday – that is, liberally.)

Choose Your Own Escape

The rest of the rooms are no consolation prize. Beachfront Rooms get you up close with the sand, while Lagoon View Suites are set back for those who prefer a little distance from the drama. Tucked into tropical gardens, the Garden View Rooms feel like falling into the pages of a lost Somerset Maugham story. Families are looked after, too, with connecting rooms and accessible options.

Eating, Drinking, and Everything In Between

Food is serious here – but not in a fussy way. At Navo, the fine-dining restaurant, the degustation menu leans heavily into local ingredients: coconut, mud crab, yellowfin tuna, and all the other things that taste suspiciously better when you’re barefoot.

Sanasana is the go-to for buffets (themed nights, generous spreads), while Toba Bar & Grill turns out pizza and poke bowls. Kama Lounge – with its torches and sunset cocktails – verges on cliché, but somehow sidesteps it with just the right amount of Fijian charm. Also worth noting: the coconut coffee at Lai Lai Café should probably come with a warning label.

All the Things You’ll Pretend You’re Going to Do

If you feel guilty about the sheer volume of lying around, there’s an 18-hole golf course with enough sea views to ruin your swing, jet-ski safaris, and reef dives.

Fitness classes, a 24-hour gym, and the resort’s bee sanctuary – part of its sustainability program – round out the offerings for people who can’t sit still. For the truly energetic, Planet Trekkers Kids Club has the smalls sorted, with Fijian crafts and adventures that might make them forget their screens.

When You Want to Float Away

The Spa InterContinental is everything you hope a tropical spa will be: fragrant with gardenia and coconut oil, airy, and blissfully calm. The treatments draw on ancient Fijian rituals, using herbs plucked from the on-site garden. A Bobo massage here is less about pampering and more about being spiritually ironed out.

Insider Secrets: Club InterContinental

Upgrade to Club InterContinental if you can. There’s an infinity pool, a private lounge, champagne breakfasts, and afternoon teas so civilised they might tempt you to pack a linen dress instead of your usual beach wrap.

The Heart of Fiji

If there’s a magic ingredient, it’s the staff. The Fijian hospitality stereotype – warm, unforced, joyfully genuine – turns out to be true. They remember your name. They stop and chat like you’re an old friend. One you’ll want to return time and again to see.

Austen Lovers, This Is the Ultimate Pride & Prejudice Stay https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/travel/pride-and-prejudice-jane-austen-film-locations-stay/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 03:10:32 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1273850 To be mistress of Pemberley might be something!

The post Austen Lovers, This Is the Ultimate Pride & Prejudice Stay appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
It can be argued that some of the most memorable period dramas are built on the homes they inhabit.

So often do authors use the grand settings of stately homes as essential points of reference for their richly woven narratives, that visiting famous film locations has become a major travel drawcard for anyone looking to indulge their fictional fantasies with real-life experiences.

Case in point, Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, which counts the notable locations referred to throughout its pages, as some of the most memorable in the author’s repertoire. Particularly, the family home and estate belonging to one, Mr. Darcy, otherwise known as Pemberley.

Fans of the enemies-to-lovers tale of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy know Pemberley well, as it was upon seeing the “large, handsome, stone building” that Lizzie’s preconceived notions of Mr Darcy first begin to falter.

Like the brooding Darcy himself, Pemberley’s imposing force leaves quite the impression on Lizzie, as Austen narrates during her first visit to the grand estate.

“Its banks were neither formal, nor falsely adorned. Elizabeth was delighted. She had never seen a place where nature had done more, or where natural beauty had been so little counteracted by an awkward taste. They were all of them warm in their admiration; and at that moment she felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something!”

A sight to behold, indeed, that up until recently remained in our imaginations, most ardently. That was, until we discovered that – not only can you visit the real life Pemberley – but you can now stay on its storied grounds, bringing us one step closer to living out our own literary fantasies one Austen location at a time.

Can You Stay In Mr. Darcy’s House?

Mr Darcy 2005 Pride And Prejudice

While you can’t stay in Mr Darcy’s fictional Pemberley House, you can stay at the estate used as the location for his grand house in Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen.

Fans of the film can live out their Austen dreams with a tour of the iconic Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, England, most months of the year, but to avoid disappointing oneself, it’s best to book in advance.

Chatsworth House Pride and Prejudice Pemberley House

Austen aficionados will recognise rooms such as the Painted Hall and its grand staircase, where Lizzie and the Gardiners are first introduced to the beguiling building and begin their tour of Pemberley.

The film’s memorable sculpture gallery scene, in which a conversation with Darcy’s housekeeper provides an integral moment of realisation for Lizzie, was also filmed within Chatsworth House, and is available to view on select days throughout the year.

Fun fact; the bust of Mr. Darcy displayed in the scene was kept by the estate’s owners, albeit relocated to the orangery, for visitors to admire.

Can’t make it out to the estate just yet? Worry not gentle readers, for the famous figurehead has proven to be such a popular drawcard for Austen fans, that a replica is now available to purchase from the Chatsworth House shop.

If the full Elizabeth Bennet experience is what you’re after, then the multiple accommodation options around the estate will prove most sufficient for those wanting to immerse themselves in the Pride & Prejudice universe for as long as possible.

What Is The Location of Pemberley In Pride and Prejudice?

Chatsworth Pemberley House Pride and Prejudice Mr Darcy Sculpture (1)
Image: DPC Photography/Chatsworth House Trust

Chatsworth, which is also the largest private country house in England, is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, who’ve been the caretakers of the estate since it was first built by the Cavendish family in the 17th century.

Rumour has it that the literary version of Mr Darcy’s Pemberley was based on the very real Chatsworth. And given that it was only down the road from Bakewell, the town where Jane Austen was staying when she wrote the novel between 1796 ad 1797, it’s not a wild theory either.

Austen describes the Derbyshire estate, most commonly accepted to be inspired by Chatsworth, in great detail throughout the novel, and even mentions it specifically (though in a smaller capacity) as a place Elizabeth Bennet visits prior to arriving at the fictional Pemberley.

And while we’ll never truly know if the rumours are entirely correct, we do know that the closer we can get to Mr. Darcy, the better. So excuse us while we add Chatsworth to our dream literary itinerary with haste.

The city of angels is known for many things; palm-laden boulevards, high-end shopping and of course, being home to the world’s biggest celebrity names. For those who subscribe to the celebrity set, any trip to Los Angeles would be remiss to not eat, stay and shop as the A-list do. So where do you go? West Hollywood, of course.

The cultural and geographical heart of LA, West Hollywood (also known as WeHo) is home to the iconic Sunset Strip, infamous rock’n’roll clubs and celebrity hot-spot restaurants–you just have to know where to go.

So, if you want to be in-the-know on the coolest spots to stop on your visit, we have the ultimate guide for you.

Where To Stay In West Hollywood

West Hollywood Hotels

Mondrian Hotel

A luxury boutique hotel located on the famous Sunset Strip, the Mondrian feels fresh and eclectic–both thanks to a recent renovation and its surrealist aesthetic. When you’re not relaxing in a generously sized room, we’d personally be spending our extra downtime at the stunning Skybar, swimming, partying or sipping cocktails while taking in the view out over LA. The hotel is in the perfect spot for some of the city’s best nightlife, located within walking distance of The Comedy Store, Whisky A Go Go for live bands and Saddle Ranch (a celeb fave for its chop-house cuisine and mechanical bull).

Soho House Holloway

The reputation of Soho House speaks for itself, really. But, the newest of their three LA locations, Holloway, is truly divine. For a taste of tranquility amid the hustle and bustle of busy LA streets, Soho House Holloway channels ‘60s Southern Californian cool with its neutral yet artistic interiors. Located in the Santa Monica Boulevard district of West Hollywood, you’re close to some of the area’s most coveted hot spots.

Kimpton La Peer

For all things trendy, across fashion, culture and food, the design district in WeHo is the place to be and the hotel to stay at is the Kimpton La Peer. Perfectly wedged between iconic shopping strip, Melrose Ave. and bustling Santa Monica Bld., when you’re not soaking up the meticulously designed hotel (complete with rooftop pool and pickleball court) you can relish in the nearby art and architecture.

Where To Shop In West Hollywood

Shopping west hollywood

Melrose Avenue isn’t just some of the best shopping in West Hollywood, but arguably LA. Home to luxury boutiques for all the big-name brands, there’s also smaller boutiques and cult favourites many Aussies will delight in having access to; Glossier and The Real Real, in particular.

Where To Eat In West Hollywood

West Hollywood Restaurants
Image: @theformosa via Instagram

Whether you’re a certified foodie or you’re hoping dining out might lead to a celebrity run-in, there’s no shortage of beloved cafes and restaurants in WeHo to try.

Dan Tana’s

This vintage Italian restaurant has a reputation–spanning 60 years, we might add–for good reason. Attracting both A-listers and locals, the authentic restaurant is a must for those with a craving for pasta–we recommend having your hotel concierge booking as soon as you arrive as they can be tricky to get a table (even more sign it’s worth the visit).

Formosa

Marked by it’s retro striped entryway and neon green sign, Formosa instantly transports you back to old Hollywood and even features a vintage train carriage you can dine in. Here you’ll find a delicious blend of American-Asian cuisine perfect for sharing.

SUR

Reality lovers will relish the opportunity to visit the famous SUR Restaurant and Lounge. Made more notable by Vanderpump Rules, you’ll devour everyone any one of their New-America dishes expertly thought up by Executive Chef Nico Medina.

I Went To Zanzibar To Discover Mnemba Island’s Barefoot Paradise https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/mnemba-islands-luxurious-getaway/ Sun, 02 Feb 2025 05:53:00 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1282850 On the east coast of Africa a tiny,
unspoilt utopia is waiting to spoil you.

The post I Went To Zanzibar To Discover Mnemba Island’s Barefoot Paradise appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
I’m approaching Mnemba Island on a speedboat. I can see the team standing on the white coral sand, waving at me. I wave back. It feels like I’m arriving on the set of the comedy-drama The White Lotus, only thankfully there’s no plot to kill me this season. I step into the ocean, and wade through the shallow, azure water that looks like someone has put TikTok’s ocean-blue filter on it. I arrive on the shore.

&Beyond Mnemba Island
Image: &Beyond Mnemba Island

My jeans are soaked, and it feels wonderful not to care, because soon I’ll have no need for jeans. Or shoes. I needn’t have packed three pairs of sandals, because I wear none of them. I press pause on the concept of time – it’s irrelevant now. I can’t remember what day or time it is. I don’t care, because all that matters, in this moment, is that I’m in Zanzibar. The archipelago of Zanzibar has long been on my bucket list. I’ve made it to Tibet, to Bhutan, to Cuba, but never to East Africa. For me, the appeal of travel is its ability to transport you to a world so unlike your own, just like Jasmine stepping onto the magic carpet in Aladdin.

It’s the ultimate form of escapism – and Mnemba Island feels as exotic and remote as one can get. The lodge has recently undergone an eight-month renovation, reimagined using white coral stone, coconut palms, traditional Lamu plaster, artisan wood and locally woven textiles. There’s even a traditional dhow boat that was made on the island itself, the wood carefully heated and moulded into shape by local craftsmen.

Mnemba Island’s Palm-Frond Thatched Bandas

There are 12 newly refurbished palm-frond thatched bandas, or bungalows, inspired by the form of a nautilus shell. When first hatched, these shells are divided into seven or eight small chambers, and the bandas mimic this flow, curving from space to space. There’s not a spare banda on the island, and yet it feels deserted. The only people I encounter are the staff, who are ever so discreet as they make sure your every need and want is met.

&Beyond Mnemba Island
The Luxurious Lounge Area Of A Banda. Image: &Beyond Mnemba Island

I glance at other guests at a distance, occasionally at the restaurant, but most dine in their private outdoor beach lounge. This rare privacy is not by accident, and the island’s operator, &Beyond, has thoughtfully designed the island to make you feel like you’re the only person in paradise. After all, true luxury is quiet and always unpretentious. While it’s not confirmed, celebrities like Paul McCartney, Naomi Campbell and Tom Cruise are reported to have stayed on the island. You’d never know, of course, because everyone feels like they have Mnemba all to themselves.

I wake and move dreamlike from bed to breakfast. From the spa to snorkelling to a cruise on the Sunset Dhow at dusk, happily being told what to do and where to go. Everything is taken care of. There’s nothing to worry about. It’s the antithesis of modern life. There is no rushing. I don’t set my alarm. I stop and notice little things. I absorb the inner workings of island life. Little crabs going busily about their day, furiously digging holes and scurrying sideways up and down the beach with an urgency and focus that now seems foreign to me. They have deadlines, I don’t. “What’s the hurry?” I ask. But they’re too busy to stop and talk.

&Beyond Mnemba Island
Image: &Beyond Mnemba Island

I walk around the winding sandy paths under the dappled shade of the casuarina pine forest where I meet two antelope species, Ader’s duiker and suni antelope. The tiny animals freeze upon sighting me, and I hold their gaze for what feels like hours. I can wait, I think. Apparently, so can they. I always break eye contact first. In the morning, I go on another snorkelling trip, and ride next to a pod of bottlenose dolphins, bobbing in and out of the water. I slide into the ocean and look through my goggles to find trumpetfish and parrot fish gliding below me. It becomes instantly clear that there’s a reason Mnemba is the most popular snorkelling spot in Zanzibar – the marine life is incredibly vibrant. At night, I lie under crisp cotton sheets, enclosed in an embroidered linen canopy. I wonder why I don’t sleep under a cloud of linen each night at home, and then remember that this is paradise, and beds like this exist only in paradise.

I leave all my doors and windows open. I don’t need to face the glaring blue light of my phone searching for calming sounds promising to lure me to sleep. Instead, I have the music of the ocean all to myself while my fan spins above me. I easily slip into a routine of nothingness. Tasks that at home feel small, insignificant and always hasty become important. There are endless moments of mindfulness to be enjoyed. I stop and sit for breakfast. I linger in the shower, using the island’s coffee, cinnamon and orange body scrub. I wash my hair and let it dry naturally. The hairdryer goes unused. I nap and nap and nap some more, because there is always more sleep to be had. The days feel full, and I adjust to this new way of living. It’s the simple life, only there’s nothing simple about it. I now live in an exquisite wooden banda with the most decadent shower I’ve ever seen.

Private Dining Enhances The Serenity – And The Menu Is Always Superb

Each morning, I take a moment to ponder the daily menu displayed on a chalkboard. The food is exquisite, which comes as no surprise given Zanzibar is famous for its spices. I eat freshly caught seafood. For lunch one day, I order the poached lobster roll, served with garlic butter, creamy bisque and thinly sliced paprika crisps. For dinner, it is fish and coconut ceviche with mango and tiger-nut milk and lobster risotto. For dessert, I try the mango sorbet and toasted coconut.

&Beyond Mnemba Island
Image: &Beyond Mnemba Island

Between meals, I sip on masala tea served with spiced biscotti. I eat homemade ice-cream, spiced with vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. At cocktail hour, my butler arrives barefoot at my room with my drink of choice – always a margarita – and a platter of canapés. As the days pass, the friendly butler and I throw thumbs up back and forth to one another, because every moment feels like a thumbs-up moment here.

“I adjust to this simple life, only there’s nothing simple about it”

I take morning and afternoon walks around the island, a distance of just 1.5 km, passing the sandbag erosion wall, a sustainability innovative built to mitigate erosion and protect the future of the island. I attend yoga classes and stretch into my hips and wonder why I don’t do more yoga when it feels this good. I breathe deeply and remind myself to do this more when I get home.

I swim in the ocean more times than I can remember, immersing myself in the saltwater, a healing tonic for my mind and body. In the spa, masseuse Eva rubs African potato balm into my entire body. It soaks deeply into my skin, and I sink into the bed like a jellyfish.

It’s Perfect For Honeymooners Or Those Wanting To Escape The Grind For A Peaceful Paradise

Children are welcomed, but there are never more than two aged under 12 at any one time. It’s an island more suited to honeymooners or adults wanting to escape the daily grind and sit peacefully in paradise. The appeal of this lodge is twofold: there’s the barefoot luxury, but there’s also knowing that &Beyond has been an innovator in sustainable travel since its beginnings.

There are zero plastic water bottles on Mnemba – a rarity in a world that by 2050 will have more plastic in the ocean than fish – and the island is powered by solar. Mnemba’s marine conservation efforts are expansive, and speak to the company’s impact mission, “to leave our world a better place”. The island’s new Discovery Centre is a dedicated space for guests to explore the conversation and community initiative enabled by Oceans Without Borders, a marine conservation initiative managed in collaboration by &Beyond and Wild Impact.

Its long-term green sea turtle monitoring program is one of the most extensive in the Indian Ocean, and the island provides a safe haven for these precious creatures to nest. If you get lucky, you’ll experience a turtle hatching (this usually peaks between April and August). One morning, I meet with Dr Camilla Floros, Oceans Without Borders’ marine program manager and principal scientist, and she tells me about the island’s coral nursery and reef restoration project. “My mantra is that there is no Planet B – this is the only one we have,” she says.

&Beyond Mnemba Island
Image: &Beyond Mnemba Island

Floros explains that approximately a quarter of the world’s coral reefs – corals have been around for 500 million years, but modern reefs “only” about 60 million years – have been damaged beyond repair due to human mistreatment and climate change. For this reason much of Mnemba is now protected, and tourists who aren’t staying on the island are forbidden to enter the area; there’s only so many yacht anchors coral can take before it literally breaks. Floros has been instrumental in driving the island’s coral nursery – a healthy coral colony that will eventually be transplanted back to the reef – as well as new artificial reef structures which have been placed outside restricted zones to reduce pressures on protected areas.

On the drive back to the airport, we pass a hotel that markets itself as being directly on the beach, overlooking the island of Mnemba. I pinch myself. Most people are lucky if they just look out to Mnemba in the distance. I stayed there. I step onto the plane, the feeling of wearing shoes now unfamiliar, and wonder if it was all a dream.

&Beyond Mnemba Island collects guests at Zanzibar International Airport or Stone Town, followed by a 90-minute road trip and a 15-minute boat ride.

I Stayed In A Tiny Home And It Was A Rewilding Gamechanger https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/tiny-home-rewilding-review/ Fri, 31 Jan 2025 03:10:12 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1273090 A getaway in a tiny house brings big lessons

Rewilding may be the biggest wellness trend of the moment, but it scares me. Sure I want all the benefits of going back-to-nature, but without the panic-inducing thought of having to pitch a tent. Could a stay in a Tiny Home tick the boxes I’m after: a sustainable escape with luxe benefits? Well, when it comes with the added offer of getting there in a new luxury all-electric car, the answer is yes.

Tiny Astrid and Volvo EX30
From the fire pit to the hot tub, to the luxe car trip, this tiny home stay delivers

Let me rewind a second. Without meaning to, our family have been living a little too large. With three grown children (all still at home, thank you Cost of Living crisis), our home in Sydney is heaving with bodies and stuff. There’s old furniture waiting for my DIY-era to kick-in, packed bookcases with unread bestsellers, cupboards stuffed with rarely-used gadgets and chargers that have unconsciously uncoupled from their original purpose. And don’t get me started about the cobwebbed discarded gym equipment. But lately, the weight of it all has been suffocating.

I always loved the idea behind Tiny Home stays – perfect little doll houses dotted across the country encouraging us all to scale down our living spaces and to tread more lightly on the planet. And when I saw this perfectly proportioned eco-friendly, off-grid tiny house on the Into The Wild Escapes website, I decided to do it. She is called Tiny Astrid. (So cute!)

To make the experience even better we took up the special package on offer from Volvo. Volvo Cars Australia has formed a neat collab with Into The Wild Escapes, offering guests the opportunity to travel to and from Tiny Astrid in the new all-electric Volvo EX30. It gives guests the chance to experience an entirely eco-conscious journey – in total minimalist luxury – from start to finish. Genius. If we were going to embrace sustainability, we might as well go all in.

Tiny home stay in NSW's Blue Mountains with Volvo EX30
Tiny Astrid perched on the edge of the NSW Blue Mountains provided a perfect rewilding experience

The day of our escape arrived on a scorching hot summer day. At the pickup point, the electric Volvo waited with an added promise of adventure. It didn’t take us long to get used to the silence of the engine while working our way through all the cool things on offer on the hi-tech, centre console big screen. It honestly provided extra fun entertainment for the entire trip. They say it’s the smallest electric SUV, but it felt roomier than our car back home and hugged the mountain’s curves to perfection. The drive out of Sydney felt like shedding layers of city stress with each kilometre.

Two and a half hours later we arrived at Tiny Astrid in the NSW Blue Mountains. Inside, it was a masterclass in minimalism. Every inch had been considered, every corner crafted with purpose. The queen bed in the loft looked down over a space that somehow managed to feel both cosy and expansive. The luxe finishes were impressive: from the French linen bedding to the St Ali coffee, to the extra blankets that we wrapped ourselves in around the fire, to the hot water bottles in their tiny, knitted jumpers hidden away in one of the perfectly executed storage solutions.

The lounges called to be lied down on, while the low-slung outdoor chairs around the fire pit beckoned relentlessly as did the thoughtfully supplied hammock which we hooked up to nearby trees.

the firepit at the NSW tiny home
The firepit gave great views and the best spot to watch a sky full of stars

But it was the hot tub that sealed the deal. As the sun set and the temperature plummeted, we jumped in – watching the stars emerge above the trees. The only sounds were the gentle crackle of the wood fire heating the tub. Not a flickering screen in sight. It was bliss.

This was rewilding at work – disconnecting from the modern rat race and reconnecting with nature – albeit with the mod-cons of a working shower , a composting toilet system and air-con.

The hours passed in a blur of simple pleasures. Morning coffee sipped from enormous mugs, bushwalking on nearby tracks. Short trips to nearby picture-postcard hamlets. Afternoons reading on the compact deck, before cooking up home-cooked meals on the BBQ. Evenings in the hot tub or around the fire, solving all the world’s problems over a bottle of red, purchased from Frankie and Mos at nearby Blackheath.

Volvo EX30 at tiny home in Blue Mountains
Getting there was half the fun with the offer of trialling a Volvo EX30 all-electric SUV as an added extra with the stay.

By the end of our stay when we were packing up the Volvo, we realised we didn’t really have much to pack – we hadn’t needed much at all . Our EX30 hummed to life silently, ready to carry us back to the city. We had travelled approximately 160km and still had a healthy 30% charge – but thought we’d better find a charging station before hitting the motorways. After a Google search on the console screen, we found one at a car park in Lawson on the way home and recharged the car while we had a pub lunch at the nearby grand old Henry Hotel. The recharge cost us $24 – which was substantially less than a fill-up at the petrol pump. The EX30 is Volvo’s smallest ever fully electric SUV, but certainly doesn’t skimp in the style or sophistication stakes. Also, we couldn’t fault it’s range – we never felt like the juice was going to run out at any minute. For those of us who’ve never driven an electric car before, it was all easier than we imagined.

As the mountains started to disappear in the rearview mirror, I realised something in me had shifted. I’d come seeking a cute escape but realised that living large didn’t require a large space, and that sustainable living can definitely be done in style.

Tiny Astrid stays start from $349 a night. Booking the Volvo EX30 costs a flat-fee of $220 for the duration of your stay. The offer ends in March. For sll the details and booking info go to intothewildescapes.com

It’s never too early to be prepared, and when it comes to contending for the best spot to get your New Year’s Eve fireworks fix – the sooner, the better!

Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display is renowned for being one of the most impressive in the world, and while many of the best vantage points used to be reserved for high-paying ticket holders, the City of Sydney put an end to that recently, opening up the prime viewing spots to the general public.

Once you’ve got your New Year’s Eve outfit sorted, you can start to think about where you’ll be heading. Luckily for you, the marie claire team have scoured the internet to bring you a wrap up of sites around Sydney to secure the best (free) fireworks-viewing spots.

Free Places To Watch The New Year’s Eve Fireworks In Sydney

Barangaroo Reserve

Barangaroo Reserve is one of the closest vantage points to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks display, with panoramic views of the fireworks and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Because of it’s prime position, City of Sydney recommends you get there before 7pm to avoid missing out on a spot.

Open Hours: 12pm – 12.45am

Address: Hickson Road, Millers Point

Capacity: 9000 people

Birchgrove Park

A family-friendly location away from the crowded city spots, Birchgrove Park in Sydney’s Inner-West has amazing views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Open Hours: 8am – 1.30am

Address: Grove Street, Birchgrove

Capacity: 5000 people

Blues Point

(Credit: James D. Morgan/Getty Images)

One of the most popular spots to see the fireworks in Sydney on New Year’s Eve, Blues Point has views of both the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. This is another one to get to early, with the council stating that last year, the site reached capacity just before 5pm.

Open Hours: 9am – 12:30am

Address: Blues Point Road, McMahons Point

Capacity: 8000 people

Bradfield Park & Mary Booth Reserve

Close to transport, with a much more open area than other spaces around Sydney, Bradfield Park is a popular spot for families and groups, but because of that, it’s recommended you get your seats before 5.30pm.

Open Hours: 9.30am – 12.30am

Address: Fitzroy Street, Milsons Point

Capacity: 16,000

Campbells Cove

East of The Rocks and north of the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Campbell’s Cover offers another prime vantage spot to catch the New Year’s Eve fireworks. If you’re thinking about nabbing a spot here, then you might be in for a big day, as the council recommends getting there before 2.55pm, based on when the area reached capacity in 2023.

Open Hours: 9 am – 1 am

Address: Hickson Road, Sydney

Capacity: 11,000

Dawes Point (Tar-Ra) Park

You can’t get much closer to the Harbour Bridge than Dawes Point Park, but because of the proximity, it does impact the view. It’s definitely still worth the trip for the wow factor.

Open Hours: 9 am – 1 am

Address: Dawes Point Park, The Rocks

Capacity: 36,000

East Circular Quay

(Credit: Don Arnold/WireImage)

Between The Rocks and the Sydney Opera House, East Circular Quay has amazing views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which makes it one of the most popular spots to view the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney. Note though, from the East side, you won’t be able to see the Sydney Opera House and you’ll need to get here before 2pm – which is when it reached capacity in 2023.

Open Hours: 9 am – 1 am

Address: Alfred Street, Sydney

Capacity: 9500

Hickson Rd Reserve

Hickson Rd Reserve is up there with the most iconic spots to view the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney. You’ll need to get here early to secure your spot before it reaches capacity, but because of its prime location, it’s definitely worth it. This is the one to beat if you want to impress any family or friends visiting from overseas or interstate.

Open Hours: 9 am – 1 am

Address: Hickson Road Reserve, The Rocks

Capacity: 3000

Lookes Avenue Reserve

Despite this site being significantly smaller than others, it does fill up early with all the locals who know where to go. If you’re willing to get to the site before the surrounding areas are closed off to public transport – usually between 2-3pm – then you’re in for some stellar uninterrupted views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Open Hours: 8 am – 1.30 am

Address: Lookes Avenue, Balmain East

Capacity: 1000

McKell Park

This location might be small, but you’ll have guaranteed views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge with less noise and bustle than the other spots closer to the city.

Open Hours: 12 pm – 12.30 am

Address: Darling Point Road, Darling Point

Capacity: 1000

Mort Bay Park

(Credit: Jasske/Getty Images)

Super popular with families, Mort Bay Park in Sydney’s Inner-West is a great spot to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks on the western side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As this vantage point is located in Birchgrove, the surrounding streets are closed to vehicles from 3pm onwards, so you’ll need to plan ahead.

Open Hours: 8 am – 1.30 am

Address: Cameron Street, Birchgrove

Capacity: 3000

Rose Bay Foreshore

While this one is a little further away than others, the Rose Bay Foreshore still makes for a great spot to spend New Year’s Eve, especially if you’re wanting to watch as a group. Bring a picnic and a bottle of wine (or two) and setting in for the night, so a calmer way to experience New Year’s Eve.

Open Hours: 3 pm – 12.30 am

Address: Calendonia Road, Rose Bay

Capacity: 3000

While these vantage points aren’t an exhaustive list, as the countdown to New Year’s continues, we’ll keep updating the page as more information becomes available.

Mexico has long been one of my most-loved travel destinations, and my first time visiting Cabo San Lucas was nothing short of magical.

Nestled along the idyllic coastline between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo, sits a sea of stunning, luxury resorts. Travellers are truly spoilt for choice along what’s being aptly dubbed the tourist corridor, so for the Four Season’s second venture in the region they wanted to “raise the bar”. That’s exactly what they did.

So what sets this luxury resort apart? Where others rely on the golden corridor’s expansive and scenic lure, the Four Seasons finds balance in generous, contemporary spaces that still feel warm and intimate.

Inspired by Pueblos Mágicos–Mexican towns known for their enchanting qualities–you will be so spellbound by Four Seasons’ Cabo San Lucas At Cabo Del Sol that you’ll never want to leave (take it from me).

Stay

In such a beautiful beachfront destination, to spend more than the minimum required amount of time in your room should feel wasted, not not here.

Each of the Four Seasons’ rooms offer breathtaking outlooks to the Sea of Cortez and a generous amount of space, designed to blend architecture and environment.

The Ocean-View Casita Room with Plunge Pool was a standout, seamlessly transitioning in and outdoors through floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors, private pool and outdoor shower so tranquil you’ll wonder how you’ll ever confine yourself to four walls while bathing again.

Dine

For foodies, any of the eight original-concept dining and drinking experiences will prove a culinary delight. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Miguel Baltazar and Food and Beverage Director Matt Myers, dining experiences span barefoot poolside lunches to stunning sunset drinks at Sora Rooftop Bar which features open fire pits and sweeping coastal views.

The recently opened Cayao from Chef Richard Sandoval is a must, harmonising Nikkei cuisine by bringing together the flavours of Japan and Peru, to create unique dishes and flavour combinations you’ll never have experienced before.

If you’re looking to immerse yourself further in the Baja Riveria, Palmerio focuses on locally sourced seafood and regionally grown produce.

Rest & Recreation

There’s no shortage of experiences to indulge or embrace in, you simply have to choose your vice. For those looking to relax, the Tierra Mar Spa is the pinnacle of tranquility, featuring ten private rooms and relaxation areas, it’s expertly designed to maximise privacy and rejuvenation. The spa combines the power of indigenous botanicals and their healing properties and products from both renowned skincare brand 111SKIN and Apotheca Beauty.

For those seeking something a little more adventurous, the swimmable beach offers crystal clear water ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving and freediving or you might consider shoreline surf-fishing, SUP (stand-up paddle), boogie boards, kayaks, or a water-skimming Schiller bike more your speed.

For moments in between, Three large pools and hot tubs, including one adults only, are the perfect place to sit back, soak up the sunshine, scenery and a few margaritas. There’s an abundance of shaded loungers to choose from or for those who love to spend an entire day pool-side (me) the private cabanas are simply divine.

When it comes to luxe locations, it doesn’t get much more fabulous than Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. We check into two of the city’s most iconic hotels.

Poolside at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel.

Waldorf Astoria

There’s a reason Hollywood star Sofia Vergara was spotted at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills several weeks ago: the Art Deco-inspired hotel – situated at the iconic intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards – is one of the most impressive destinations in the city. It’s also one of its newest hotels, having opened in 2017, after a rumoured $US200 million, decade-long build.

Stepping into the lobby, a mammoth bronze chandelier and awe-inspiring three-storey-high ceilings captivate guests from the moment they arrive. While the hotel’s design is grand, the flawless service is what truly sets it apart. Staff here treat you like royalty.

There’s also the fact that the rooms are fit for a queen. Crafted by French interior design legend Pierre-Yves Rochon, the spacious guest rooms (even the smallest option is an impressive 58.5 square metres) feature floor-to-ceiling windows, which fill the rooms with natural light. Private balconies offer picture-perfect views of Beverly Hills.

The rooms are, of course, elegantly styled – think warm white stone and rich wood accents – and complemented by state-of-the-art technology that ensures you have every modern comfort at your fingertips.

From Bluetooth audio connections to iPads that control everything from lighting to window coverings, there’s no shortage of smart tech at this hotel – or glamour, for that matter. In the marble bathrooms, you’ll find toiletries from either Diptyque or Ferragamo, depending on your room type. And if spas are your thing, the hotel’s La Prairie Spa provides an indulgent retreat.

The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills doesn’t just offer a chic place to stay, it’s a culinary destination in its own right. At Espelette Beverly Hills, chef Steve Benjamin crafts a Mediterranean-inspired menu that focuses on farm-to-table and locally sourced fare. And for those seeking an alfresco experience, The Rooftop is a must-visit.

By day, it’s the spot to go for a leisurely lunch by the pool. At sunset, it transforms into one of Beverly Hills’ hottest scenes, serving up craft cocktails alongside bites like crispy fish tacos.

In a city jam-packed with storied hotels, the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills is simply unforgettable. Just ask Sofia Vergara.

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel

If you were to name the most iconic films of the ’90s, Pretty Woman would likely be high on the list. Which is probably why stepping into the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, feels so nostalgic – it was where much of the rom-com was filmed.

The hotel first opened its doors back in 1928, and over the years it has welcomed everyone from Hollywood stars (yes, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere) to world leaders (Barack Obama, and even the Dalai Lama). At one stage, Elvis Presley called it home.

Recently renovated, the Beverly Wilshire’s 395 rooms and suites are a perfect blend of California style and Old Hollywood glamour. The David Collins Studio-led redesign features light grey palettes, marble accents, and Art Deco-inspired touches.

And for those seeking the ultimate in luxury, the hotel is home to one of the largest penthouses in Los Angeles, along with presidential suites in both wings.

The hotel houses the flagship location of Wolfgang Puck’s renowned steakhouse, Cut, where the celebrity chef himself is often seen in the kitchen or chatting with guests. For all-day dining with a view, The Blvd offers California-fresh cuisine on a sunny patio, the dream spot for people-watching on Rodeo Drive.

The hotel’s Forbes Five Star spa offers a blend of traditional and cutting-edge treatments, from technologically advanced facials to holistic body therapies using all-natural products. Then there’s the Mediterranean-style outdoor pool, modelled after film star Sophia Loren’s private Italian villa.

You could easily lie on one of the chic poolside cabanas here all day long.

There’s so much to love about this hotel, including the “Pretty Woman for a Day” experience, which allows guests to re-create iconic moments from the film. To give you an idea of what it entails: imagine getting into a Rolls-Royce and going on a personal shopping spree on Rodeo Drive, followed by a massage and romantic candlelit dinner on your private terrace.

Whether you’re living out your favourite film fantasy or just lounging by the pool, the Beverly Wilshire offers an experience that’s quintessentially LA: glamorous, star-studded and memorable.

Whether it’s a weekend away, a staycation, business or pleasure, Sydney has so much to offer as a dream travel destination, especially when it comes to the city’s growing list of boutique hotels.

From the stunning harbour with Australian icons like the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House to fine dining, entertainment and all its natural beauty (hello, countless beaches) there’s a seemingly endless list of things to do and see.

That’s probably why 36 million people visited Sydney in 2023, spending a total of 30.7 million nights in the city, according to data from the NSW government.

So before you plan your travel hit list, you’ll need to find the perfect hotel. In our opinion, there’s no better option than a luxe splurge or niche boutique hotel for really taking in the feel of the city. Luxurious, modern and far from your plain, run-of-the-mill rooms, a luxury or boutique hotel will elevate your stay in Sydney.

There’s no shortage of stunning boutique hotels in Sydney either, the best of which we’ve rounded up below.

And if it’s a real weekend inside you’re after, there’s no need to leave, with a vibrant menu by Head Chef Kezia Kristel (ex-Icebergs and Bennelong) offering up day-to-night dining with a difference.

Plates of creamy burrata with sundried tomato sauce, kingfish tartare spiked with dashi cream, and wagyu topped with lashings of Café de Morris butter are just some of the standout dishes complemented by a fun and approachable drinks menu to shift your night into the next gear.

Then, whenever you’re ready to retreat, finish off the day with an ice cold negroni delivered to your art deco-inspired suite before putting your feet up and drifting off into staycation bliss.

Proof That Luxury Can Be Both Sustainable And Sexy https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/volvo-ex30-sustainable-car/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 02:44:03 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1265176 Volvo's latest innovation is the perfect example

The post Proof That Luxury Can Be Both Sustainable And Sexy appeared first on marie claire.

As the conversation around sustainability grows louder, each year feels like a small yet promising step forward. And when it comes to all things luxury, the shift from the large and loud to the thoughtfully crafted is steering the way.

These days, it’s less about the opulence and more about the impact our choices have on the world – how we live, and, perhaps most intriguingly, how we move.

As cities get smarter and sustainability becomes less of an option and more of a lifestyle, the way we travel is undergoing its own quiet revolution. A new wave of innovators has entered the chat, and they’re asking: can how we choose to get from A to B help lighten our footprint and make sustainability feel, well, stylish? The answer is yes, yes it can.

Volvo's EX30 is making a good case for sustainable luxury.

Enter a new breed of vehicles that do more than just get you from point A to B – they redefine the journey itself. Leading this charge is an innovation that’s not only sleek but purposefully designed to be both sustainable and chic. With the new 100 per cent EX30, Volvo reminds us of the beauty of restraint, swapping out oversized vehicles and roaring engines with a smaller and smarter package, crafted to fit seamlessly into the flow of modern city life.

Small but mighty, this sleek SUV is redefining what it means to drive smart, thanks to its chic Scandinavian design, eco-conscious materials, and a true attention to safety. From its interiors, crafted with a mix of recycled and responsibly sourced materials including denim and flax, to intuitive technology that anticipates your needs, every inch of the EX30 exudes quiet innovation.

Volvo's EX30 is making a good case for sustainable luxury. Image: Supplied

Where the EX30 truly surprises is in its high-end touches that make everyday life a little bit easier. From the panoramic glass roof to the soundbar speaker which spans the dashboard, freeing up door space for essentials, no detail has been missed. Meanwhile, the minimalist 12.3-inch tablet display offers both Google and Apple CarPlay integration, meaning staying connected on the road has never looked so chic. Volvo has even integrated a smart digital key that allows you to access the car with just a tap of your smartphone. For those of us juggling bags, keys, and coffee as we dash out of the door, this feature is a game-changer.

But it’s not just the design that turns heads – Volvo’s commitment to safety shines just as brightly. Equipped with the latest in advanced safety features, the EX30 keeps its drivers protected on the road with technology that detects and responds to potential hazards in real-time. It’s a vehicle designed to care not only for those inside but also for the world it navigates.

Volvo's EX30 is making a good case for sustainable luxury.

The smallest of Volvo’s vehicle offerings, the EX30 comes with a Single Motor Extended Range (200kW and 480 km per charge) and a Twin Motor Performance variant (315kW and up to 460 km). Translation? A thrilling yet silent ride with plenty of power under the hood. And if you’re running low on juice, both versions can go from 10% to 80% battery charge in about 30 minutes.

While the EX30 may not promise to solve all our environmental challenges, it might just offer an opportunity to make every drive a stylish and sustainable one – proving that true luxury doesn’t have to be loud.

How To Hire A Superyacht In Sydney https://www.marieclaire.com.au/life/travel/how-to-hire-a-superyacht-sydney/ Mon, 14 Oct 2024 05:11:43 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1263841 Sail into holiday season in style

The post How To Hire A Superyacht In Sydney appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
As holiday season approaches thoughts naturally shift to celebratory pursuits, and what better way to plan the party of the season than aboard a superyacht?

Despite what any number of boat-life reality shows may have led you to believe, luxury yachting is no longer a pleasure reserved solely for the super rich. With a number of companies, vessels and options for everything from intimate charters to extravagant celebrations, there’s a bespoke on-board experience to meet any festive fancy.

Whether you’re charter curious or ready to set sail, here’s everything to know about turning your holiday event into a superyacht soirée to remember.

What Type Of Events Can Be Held On A Superyacht?

The better question might be – what kind of events can’t you have on a superyacht? From birthdays and bespoke fishing trips to hens parties and christenings, the possibilities are truly endless – just ask Christine Kotsis, founder of Sydney Harbour Bespoke Events.

“We get the opportunity to work on events that are extremely versatile and from one extreme to the other,” says Christine. “One day we could be planning a milestone birthday function, where we organise the yacht hire, styling and even fireworks in the middle of the ocean of a barge! Another day we could be planning a conference-style corporate event that requires live food stations and team bonding activities.”

What Are Some Of The Services Available On A Superyacht?

If you’re looking to level-up your next nautical activity, then vessels from companies like Ghost Elite Charters offer a host of unique and memorable services.

“From arranging a private jet for our VIP clients to private beach picnics via our tender, yoga sessions, massages, and customised dining experiences, anything is possible,” says charter manager Ivana Dvorakova from Ghost Elite Yacht Charters.

Working with companies like Sydney Harbour Bespoke Events, Ivana and her team manage every element of the minutia so all that’s left for guests to do, is turn up and enjoy.

What’s It Like Organising Events On A Superyacht?

Whether you’re organising an intimate party or a huge event, it’s not as easy to implement as first-timers may think.

“When brining to life an event on a superyacht, there’s a lot to consider regarding the wharf locations, access times (only 15 minutes), facilities available on board for food storage or drinks, and even whether or not shoes can be worn!” says Christine.

“These are the details clients booking in yachts are unsure about, so we pride ourselves in having all the answers to make the process smooth sailing and stress free.”

There’s nothing quite like a celebration at sea to elevate any event, so why not take the pressure off this party season, and let the professionals take over.
