"The more layers you add, the less it becomes about what it’s actually about"

Megan Gale has revealed she quietly married long-term partner Shaun Hampson in an exclusive podcast episode for marie claire, sharing the news publicly for the very first time on You’re Gonna Want To Hear This, hosted by editor Georgie McCourt.

In the candid conversation, the newly-50-year-old model confirms that she and Hampson tied the knot one year ago in a small, intimate ceremony overseas — with no announcement, no social media posts and no public record of the milestone until now.

“Yes, we did get married – married a year ago, a year ago yesterday,” Gale reveals. “Our ideal goal was to have it to ourselves just for a year.”

The couple, who have been together for 14 years and share two children, River and Rosie, made a deliberate decision to keep the wedding entirely private — a choice Gale says felt deeply important after decades in the public eye.

“It is really nice when so much has been public, to not have this shared or over shared, or turn it into content,” she says. “Just to have it for us and the family.”

“I did my own hair and makeup. The more layers you add, the less it becomes about what it’s actually about.”

The wedding took place at Vomo Island in Fiji — a location that holds personal meaning for the family and offered the privacy they were determined to protect.

“It’s like a home away from home for us,” Gale explains. “We knew the staff, we trusted everyone there – and we knew we could keep it airtight.”

So airtight, in fact, that even their mothers were only told the night before.

“We told them the night before,” Gale laughs. “We said, ‘We’ve got something planned as a family tomorrow’ – and then said, ‘We’re actually getting married.’ No one knew.”

The ceremony itself was intentionally pared back: just Megan, Shaun, their children and their mums.

“It was really simple and really beautiful,” she says. “I did my own hair and makeup. The more layers you add, the less it becomes about what it’s actually about.”

The Moments That Mattered Most

Some of Gale’s favourite memories aren’t the ceremony itself, but the small, joyful moments around it. “Getting ready with Rosie and my mum was really special,” she recalls. “Watching Rosie walk ahead of me towards her dad and brother – that was a moment.”

Later that night, the family abandoned formality altogether. “I jumped into the pool fully clothed and did a huge bomb,” Gale laughs. “The kids turned around like, ‘This is the best day ever.’”

There were vows too — and Gale admits Shaun stole the show. “I read mine thinking I’d nailed it,” she says. “Then Sean read his and I was like, ‘You’ve absolutely knocked it out of the park.’”

Why She Chose marie claire To Share The News

After keeping the marriage private for a year, Gale says she wanted to share the news in a considered, controlled way – and chose Marie Claire’s You’re Gonna Want To Hear This as the place to do it.

“At some point it inevitably comes up, especially in in-depth interviews,” she explains. “I didn’t want to lie, or be caught off guard. I thought, now’s as good a time as any — on my terms.”

She adds that there is still much she and Hampson intend to keep just for themselves.

“Otherwise it defeats the purpose, right?” she says.

“Nothing Changed – And It Shouldn’t”

Despite the significance of the milestone, Gale says marriage hasn’t altered their relationship — and she wouldn’t want it to.

“Nothing changes. And it shouldn’t, really,” she says. “It’s just a ceremony to celebrate your love and coming together as a family.”

The exclusive episode also sees Gale reflect on turning 50, navigating fame, motherhood, boundaries and why she’s fully embracing what she calls her “I don’t care era.”

“I don’t have enough time or energy to care anymore,” she says. “It’s quite liberating.”

She leaves listeners with one message she wants women to hear.

“Be kind to yourself,” Gale says. “A lot of peace comes from acceptance – of situations, of other people’s behaviour, of what we can’t control.”
