An alarming number of complaints have surfaced after Elon Musk-founded AI chatbot, Grok, was used to generate sexualised images of women and children.

First created in July before being launched for public use in October, the AI image generator is hosted on X (formerly Twitter), allowing for fast, public and widespread sharing of Grok-created content. As recently as January 7th, the platform was allowing users to depict others in a sexually explicit nature.

One woman, Mollie, told The Cut, she found comments under a photo she posted to X in December, whereby users were prompting the AI chatbot to strip her down to a bikini.

“Put her in a micro bikini from this angle,” the user wrote, tagging the X AI chatbot. Grok complied, showing an AI-generated image of Mollie in the same position wearing a thong bikini instead of her original outfit.

“It was scary and it was uncomfortable to have that power asserted over you,” she says. “I’ve been sexually assaulted in the past, and it almost felt like a digital version of that.”

According to the publication, Mollie requested Grok remove the image, with the chatbot acknowledging “it violated your consent”. However, the image remains public on the social platform.

Not-for-profit organisation, AI Forensics conducted a report analysing 20,000 images created by Grok over a one-week period in December, finding two percent “depicted a person who appeared to be 18 or younger, including 30 of young or very young women or girls, in bikinis or transparent clothes”, Nine reports.

The social media platform addressed concerns via its safety account, but did not deny unconsensual sexualised content exists had been created by Grok.

“We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material, by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary,” the post reads.

Technology-facilitated violence against women and girls has been rising at an alarming rate, with the intervention of AI, UN Women expects rates to increase dramatically.

Recent studies show “38 percent of women have personal experiences of online violence, and 85 percent of women online have witnessed digital violence against others.

Further studies show 90 to 95 percent of all online deepfakes are non-consensual pornographic images, with around 90 percent depicting women. In fact, “many deepfake tools are not even designed to work on images of a man’s body”, UN Women reveals.

Platforms hosting these tools must be held to a higher standard, particularly when they enable the creation and circulation of non-consensual sexual content in real time.

“The technology is moving far faster than the protections,” UN Women has warned adding that “Less than half of countries have laws that prosecute online abuse.”

For victims like Mollie, the damage is already done. Even when images are flagged or acknowledged as violating consent, they can be impossible to completely erase or get back — compounding the harm long after the initial act.

Peter Meagher, one of 15 victims of the December 14 Bondi terror attack and the last to be laid to rest, was farewelled this morning at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, where over 1000 family members, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate his life.

The service, led by Father Richard Leonard, honoured the 61-year-old as a NSW Police detective and a much-loved figure in the rugby community. In his opening address, Father Leonard described Meagher’s death as “tragic and criminal”. “Peter’s life was taken suddenly, violently and far too soon,” he said. “It feels wrong, because it is wrong, and today the church does not pretend otherwise.”

In his eulogy, Peter’s brother, journalist David Meagher, made a powerful statement calling for further gun reform in Australia.

“What happened in Bondi on December 14 was undoubtedly an attack on Jewish people, that is not in dispute,” he said.

“Speaking about the Bondi attack, I heard a very famous Australian say over the weekend, ‘This is not a gun problem, this is an anti-Semitism problem.’ Neither myself nor any other member of our family have any desire to wade into the controversy that has arisen in the wake of the Bondi attack. We are here for Peter and to celebrate the life he lived.

“But when I heard this, I thought, ‘Why can’t it be two things at once?’ Just as we must ask why those killers did what they did, we must also ask how they were able to do it.”

Two days after the anti-Semitic attack in Bondi, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was “ready for the fight” to tighten gun laws in Australia, even as the Nationals and gun groups pushed back on his proposed gun reforms. The NSW Government also announced on December 19 that it would be introducing the “toughest gun laws in a generation”, limiting the number of guns one person can own from 10 to four.

“The killer on December 14 had six legally acquired high-powered guns, which were used to kill 15 people, including my brother,” David continued. “Under new laws, he would be allowed to have four guns.

“What can you do with six guns that you can’t do with four?

“Gun reform alone will not solve hatred or extremism, but an anti-Semite without a gun is just a hate-filled person; an anti-Semite with a gun is a killer.”

He continued: “All Australians should be able to attend a religious celebration or go to the beach, or walk the streets on New Year’s Eve or Mardi Gras without the fear of being shot. Unfortunately, for my family, we no longer have the luxury of being able to say, ‘That will never happen to us.’

“My brother was a police officer for more than 30 years. He carried a gun every day of his working life and he never drew it once. He was a cop and even he didn’t need a gun.

“My biggest fear now about Peter is that in the years to come, when people think about him, he will be remembered mostly for the way he died. So I ask you, when you think about Peter, it would be great if you could think about the life he lived, which was a full and rewarding one.

“But if you do think about how his life ended, perhaps reflect on what can be done to prevent it from happening to someone else.”

The post Hillary Duff’s Husband Just Entered The Toxic Celebrity Mum Group Chat appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

On January 1, Ashley Tisdale rang in the new year by publishing an essay via The Cut detailing her decision to leave a “toxic” mum group. Titled Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group.

If you haven’t yet read it, consider this the brief version. Ashley Tisdale, former Disney star and now a mother of two with husband Christopher French, has published a candid essay reflecting on her decision to step away from a mum group that no longer felt supportive and had begun to feel quietly exclusionary.

In it, she peels back the polished image of celebrity motherhood to reveal something familiar: being left out. Not in an overt or confrontational way, but in the subtle, emotionally bruising way many women recognise instantly.

A glance at Tisdale’s Instagram suggests this is no ordinary playdate circle. The group is widely believed to include Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore and Meghan Trainor, who have all been pictured together on multiple occasions, including a mums’ weekend away in August 2022, which Trainor captioned, “I have mom friends🥹 and I love them💖.”

Hillary Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, has since chimed into the discourse, all but proving his famous wife is who Ashley is talking about.

Naturally, this all adds a layer of intrigue. Even at the highest levels of fame, it seems, social dynamics remain surprisingly universal.

In the essay, Tisdale explains that she was seeking connection in the early months of motherhood, gravitating towards women in the same stage of life. She writes:

“I needed to talk to someone else who related to what I was going through: the mood swings, the late nights, saying goodbye to who I used to be and getting to know my daughter and the new person I was becoming. So I felt lucky when my friend brought together a group of new moms that she knew.”

At first, it felt like exactly what she needed. “By the time we started getting together for playdates and got the group chat going, I was certain that I’d found my village,” she writes. “But over time, I began to wonder whether that was really true.”

The shift was gradual. Invitations stopped. Plans happened without her. She recalls being left out of a gathering organised while she was there, adding, “I still don’t get why I wasn’t at the girl hang that they all planned at my daughter’s birthday.” Eventually, the pattern became clear. “This group had a pattern of leaving someone out. And that someone had become me.”

Ashley continued, “All of a sudden, I was in high school again, feeling totally lost as to what I was doing ‘wrong’ to be left out.”

While Tisdale never named names, readers were quick to speculate. Fans noticed that she unfollowed Duff and Moore on Instagram around the same time. Tisdale and her representatives have since claimed that the essay refers to a different group of friends entirely, though many remain unconvinced.

Adding fuel to the speculation, Hilary Duff’s husband, Grammy-winning musician Matthew Koma, shared a mock cover of The Cut with his face photoshopped over Ashley’s, a pointed nod to the essay she had written.

Koma captioned the Instagram story, “When you’re the most self obsessed tone deaf person on Earth, other mums tend to shift focus to their actual toddlers.”

For now, it appears the mum-group fallout is far from over.

A major escalation between the United States and Venezuela unfolded this week after U.S. military forces carried out a large-scale operation inside Venezuelan territory, striking military targets and capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

The Trump administration says Maduro is now in U.S. custody in New York facing criminal charges, including narco-terrorism and drug trafficking, after withdrawing him from Venezuela during the overnight mission.

The operation has sharply heightened regional and global tensions. Countries across Latin America, Africa and Asia condemned the U.S. action as an unacceptable violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty, with emergency United Nations Security Council sessions convened to debate the legality of the strikes. Interim Venezuelan leadership denounced the capture as a “kidnapping” and called for Maduro’s return.

Venezuela’s ambassador Samuel Moncada, described the US’ decision as an “illegitimate armed attack lacking any legal justification” that included “the kidnapping of the constitutional president of the republic, Nicolás Maduro Moros and the first lady Cilia Flores.”

A statement from António Guterres, the UN secretary general was also read aloud in the meeting, stating: “I am deeply concerned about the possible intensification of instability in the country, the potential impact on the region, and the precedent it may set for how relations between and among states are conducted.”

What Does This Mean For Australia?

Australia has responded cautiously to the dramatic escalation between the US and Venezuela.

In a brief statement, Albanese said his government was “monitoring developments” following the capture and transfer of Venezuela’s president and his wife to the United States.

“We urge all parties to support dialogue and diplomacy in order to secure regional stability and prevent escalation,” he said.

In an article for The Guardian, Donald Rothwell, professor of international law at the Australian National University, stated that “for Australia, given that it is deeply entwined in the US military and security framework through ANZUS and AUKUS, this has particular legal and defence implications.”

He goes on to question: “If US military action in the region was challenged, would that trigger Australia’s ANZUS treaty obligations, and how would Australia precisely come to the aid of Trump-inspired US military adventurism?”

We can only wait and see.

The first days of motherhood were a blur for Letitia. After a long labour and an emergency C-section, she found herself in a crowded hospital room, alarms blaring as nurses bustled in and out. She awoke at each wail, unsure whose baby was crying, and yet she felt she could handle anything.

“I just started having this feeling of euphoria,” she says. At home, Letitia felt unstoppable. “I’ve got this, I don’t need to sleep,” she told her husband, laughing nonstop at the dizzying joy of new motherhood. “This is the best thing!” she’d tell anyone who came to visit. But behind the euphoria, small moments of disorientation began to emerge. “I started having strange thoughts that I could achieve anything, but at the same time I couldn’t make decisions,” she says.

Letitia began considering outlandish ideas, like calling Richard Branson to ask for his money, or spending all her savings on a single lottery ticket. Her euphoria gave way to disorientation, but only when she started showing physical signs such as facial twitches did people realise something was wrong. When she finally called her midwife to describe what was happening, she was told to go straight to hospital.

That night, doctors diagnosed postnatal psychosis and admitted her. “I went into a full-blown psychosis. I don’t really remember much of that,” she says. She could see her baby only a few times a day to breastfeed, and the ward’s chaos – the shouting and alarms – scared her. “I did not feel safe, I did not feel secure and that’s all I wanted to feel,” she recalls. A slow recovery was complicated by living in regional New South Wales, which meant five-hour trips for specialist care, challenging when caring for a newborn.

A “full-blown psychosis” came after Letitia’s first baby, but for her second she was supported by the Gidget Foundation. Photography: Lauren Trompp. Hair: Max Serrano. Makeup: Monique Jones.

Perinatal psychosis affects around one to two in every 1000 new mothers. Though less common than perinatal depression and anxiety, it can be severe and sudden, like Letitia’s. Symptoms may include mania, hallucinations and delusions, and it can be life-threatening if untreated.

When it came time for a second child, Letitia had her fears, but through Gidget Foundation’s Start Talking program she was able to meet regularly with a psychologist via telehealth, even before the birth. “It was so reassuring to have that expert advice,” she says.

Letitia had no psychosis the second time and is navigating motherhood with confidence and steady support. Sharing her story has been a part of her healing, her way of turning a painful and difficult experience into something meaningful.

“If opening up helps even one person, then it’s worth it,” she says.

The Gidget Foundation is a not-for-profit that supports the mental health of expectant and new parents across Australia. Named for a vibrant young mother who tragically took her life while experiencing postnatal depression, the foundation was started by Gidget’s family and friends to ensure what happened to her would not happen to others.

In Australia, perinatal depression and anxiety affects one in five mothers and one in 10 fathers. “Perinatal mental illness does not discriminate. It affects mothers, fathers, partners and families regardless of background, income or postcode,” says Karen Edwards, the foundation’s clinical director.

“Early intervention and accessible support can make a profound difference.” Edwards explains that untreated perinatal depression, anxiety or psychosis can have long-term impacts on parent-infant bonding and family wellbeing. “It’s not just about helping the parent feel better, it’s about giving the baby and the family the best start possible,” she says. Edwards highlights the importance of accessible care from the earliest stages, especially for those in rural and regional areas. “Parents need to know that support is available … and that with the right guidance they can begin to enjoy parenthood so much sooner.”

Many who have experienced such challenges choose to share their journeys as Gidget Angels, volunteers with the foundation who speak about their experiences to support and encourage others. Letitia, Lynn, Fatima and Meg are four of these Angels, speaking to raise awareness, reduce stigma and offer reassurance to others navigating early parenthood. Their stories highlight resilience, the power of connection, and the fact that no-one needs to face these challenges alone.

Lynn always wanted to be a mother, but when it became clear she might not realise this dream in the traditional sense, she started her IVF journey solo. Nothing could have prepared her for the years that followed: chemical pregnancies, emergency room visits, an endometriosis diagnosis, multiple surgeries, miscarriages and a D&C with complications. “IVF is a world of extremes, each cycle a beautiful window of hope, shattered by the brutality of loss,” she says.

Lynn’s stay in a psych ward with her three-week-old was “the best thing for us”, but Gidget can provide earlier support. Photography: Lauren Trompp. Hair: Max Serrano. Makeup: Monique Jones.

The uncertainty and repeated setbacks took a heavy emotional toll. Every twinge or cramp became a source of anxiety, and the excitement of potential pregnancy was shadowed by fear.

“You wonder if you’ve done something to damage your chances,” Lynn says, capturing the constant fear and fragility of embryo transfers. After giving birth to son Micah, Lynn’s anxiety and intrusive thoughts intensified.

Following visits to a GP specialising in postpartum care, it was suggested she spend time at a mother and baby unit at a mental health hospital. “Desperate to be healthy and make the most of those early days with my son, we checked in when he was three weeks old,” she says. “I never would have thought we’d spend our first weeks together in a psychiatric unit, but it was the best thing I could have done for us.”

Through mindfulness exercises and practical strategies, Lynn learnt to ground herself in her mothering, and was able to savour moments with Micah, enjoying his cuddles without being consumed by fear. Lynn got involved in the Gidget Foundation after reading similar stories and joining its Virtual Village, an online community of parents who share experiences.

“Reading other women’s stories gave me the courage to get help,” Lynn says. “I’m sharing my story to thank those women and hopefully help someone else.” Intrusive thoughts are common in new parents, with research showing most will experience them. They often appear suddenly and vividly: imagining the pram rolling onto train tracks or picturing yourself tripping down the stairs while holding your baby. They can feel shocking and out of character, leaving parents anxious, guilty or ashamed. But as Gidget Foundation explains, it doesn’t mean a parent wants to act on these thoughts. Instead, they’re usually a sign of heightened anxiety, exhaustion or the huge adjustment of early parenthood – and with the right support they can be understood and managed.

After Fatima’s daughter Aya was stillborn, and following a subsequent early miscarriage, the months after the births of her sons were profoundly isolating and emotionally complex. “The most isolating part is that there is no awareness that you’d be suffering during a time like this.”

She notes that her partner also struggled quietly: “Because your partner isn’t getting any support or recognition for their grief, they also can’t extend themselves beyond what they’re going through to be there for you in a way that’s meaningful.”

For Fatima, the most isolating part of post-birth mental trauma was the lack of awareness that “you’d be suffering in a time like this”. Photography: Lauren Trompp. Hair: Max Serrano. Makeup: Monique Jones.

Fatima first heard about the Gidget Foundation when she was given The Bunny Books – a collection of stories by the foundation designed for little ones but with psychological strategies to support parents. From there, she turned to the Gidget Foundation resources in the middle of the night or while breastfeeding for comfort and guidance.

In part of her healing, Fatima founded The Still Nest, a space for families from culturally diverse backgrounds to share grief and access resources. “The Still Nest represents the kind of support and sanctuary that I needed,” she says. “There are so many others who are suffering in silence, and their pain is even more exacerbated because they don’t know how to explore resources and get support for themselves.”

Fatima shares her story to help break the silence, stigma and shame around the challenges of early parenting; she wants to “normalise that it’s a sacred and vulnerable time when parents need to feel held by their community”.

Fatima also highlights the broader realities of perinatal mental health, particularly for culturally and linguistically diverse families: for many new parents, the stress of early parenthood is heightened by the heartbreak of seeing humanitarian crises unfold in real time on their phones.

“For families with cultural or personal ties to affected regions, the weight is especially heavy,” she says. “Many silence their struggles, feeling not only ‘illegitimate’ but unworthy of care.”

Acknowledging this layered grief and building culturally safe, accessible support is essential: only then can families feel seen, valued and supported as they navigate parenthood in a fragile world. Arabella Gibson, CEO of the Gidget Foundation, wants to ensure that every parent has access to timely guidance, specialist care and practical strategies, regardless of where they live or their circumstances.

“We want parents to feel seen, heard and understood,” she says. “Parenthood is such a joyful time, but it can also be overwhelming. With the right support, families can navigate the challenges more confidently and enjoy the experience.”

Gibson also highlights the role of community and connection in supporting new parents. “Sometimes the difference between struggling in silence and feeling capable is knowing that there’s someone there who understands, who can guide you without judgement,” she says. Gibson points to the foundation’s programs – both in-person at Gidget Houses and via telehealth – as examples of how accessible care can make a real difference.

“It’s about giving families the tools, the reassurance, and the space to ask questions and be honest about what they’re feeling,” she says.

As a midwife and neonatal intensive care nurse, it was assumed Meg would handle childbirth and motherhood with ease.

“You’re a midwife, you’ll be fine!” she recalls being told repeatedly. Feeling bound by that expectation, she waited far longer than she should have to seek help. Her initial anxiety began before her children were born, when she had fertility treatments.

Years of anxiety from fertility treatments made Meg’s experience more difficult than it would have been with the foundation’s help, she says. Photography: Lauren Trompp. Hair: Max Serrano. Makeup: Monique Jones.

“I truly feel counselling should be required from the start,” she says, reflecting that had support been available earlier, her struggles might have been identified and addressed sooner.

Her second child was 15 months old when she hit rock bottom. Sitting on the side of the road with her baby in the car, she felt overwhelmed, suffocated by anxiety and unsure how to move forward.

It wasn’t until Meg found a psychologist who worked for her that things began to shift. The non-judgemental support allowed her to unpack years of anxiety and learn strategies to manage her mental health. Meg shares her story because, as she says, “shame dies in safe places”.

She hopes that by speaking up, she can give hope to others and highlight the support of the Gidget Foundation. Meg first discovered Gidget while doing her own advocacy work on social media. She got in touch, learnt about becoming a Gidget Angel, and jumped at the chance. “Had I been linked with Gidget earlier, I may not have had such a difficult journey,” she says. “If sharing my story helps just one family, maybe, just maybe, it can be someone else’s survival guide.”

Perinatal mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of background, experience, or circumstance. Yet with timely support, understanding and access to practical strategies, parents can thrive, building confidence in themselves and their families.

“Just knowing that there’s support and that you’re not alone is so important,” Gibson says. For her, the ultimate goal is generational change: a world where parents understand and support each other, and where perinatal mental health is openly acknowledged and prioritised.

Perinatal Mental Health Week, held across Australia from November 23 to 29, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the mental health challenges that can arise during pregnancy and the first year after birth. The week encourages open conversations, highlights available support and reminds parents that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

By shining a light on these issues, the week aims to reduce stigma and ensure all parents know they are not alone.

Congratulations are in order for Pete Davidson and his girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, who have welcomed their first child together — a baby girl.

Hewitt took to Instagram to announce the arrival of the bub, revealing the sweet name they picked out for her: Scottie Rose.

“Our perfect angel girl arrived 12/12/2025 scottie rose hewitt davidson ♥,” the post began, “my best work yet, i am absolutely overflowing with love and gratitude and disbelief. – elsie”

But it wasn’t complete without a cheeky Pete Davidson touch, adding: “wu tang forever. – pete”

The model confirmed the news of her pregnancy on her own Instagram account on 17 July, with a series of sweet snaps captioned: “welp now everyone knows we had sex.”

The Elsie Hewitt and Pete Davidson baby news comes just months after the pair were first snapped enjoying some time in the sun on a Palm Beach weekend getaway.

Although she might appear to be a departure from Davidson’s usual type, Hewitt is still very much a part of the celebrity universe. However, sources close to the couple confirmed to Page Six early on that the pairing felt different:“[She] is very different from anybody else he’s ever dated before.”

And it seems that was the case, with Hewitt confirming that she was pregnant and the couple – very much in love.

“He is so incredible,” Hewitt told People during a red carpet appearance in May. “Honestly, best person I’ve ever met, and I’m so grateful that he’s here tonight. It was just really important to both of us to come here and support the [Endometriosis Foundation of America] and keep helping, spreading the word and educating people.”

Included in the post was a video of the couple watching the sonogram of their baby together, with an assortment of adorably candid posts that capture the incredibly happy time.

While not much else is known about how far along Hewitt is, sources revealed that the baby is due sometime around winter (US time) – which could be a welcome Christmas present for the young parents-to-be.

Regardless of what people might say about the timeline of their relationship, Pete Davidson has never kept his desire to start a family secret, telling Kevin Hart during season 2 of Peacock’s Hart to Heart: “[I’m] definitely a family guy.”

“My favorite thing ever, which I have yet to achieve, I wanna have a kid. That’s like my dream. It’s like, super corny, [but] it would be so fun. Dress up the little dude. It’s just like, I’m so excited for that chapter.”

It’s been a bruising year for the news cycle. From the devastating Bondi attack this week, to the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine and the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Sudan, much of 2025 has felt heavy, relentless and hard to hold.

As the year draws to a close, the collective bad news fatigue is real — and so is the need for reprieve. Which is why, amid the grief and global anxiety, moments of kindness, resilience and joy have mattered more than ever.

Here are the feel-good stories that cut through and made headlines in 2025.

Fair Play

Record-shattering numbers defined women’s sport this year. Round one of Australia’s WNBL season saw a 51 per cent surge in attendance, America’s WNBA reported a 130 per cent increase over four years in boys under 18 tuning in, and the Rugby World Cup was the most-watched women’s rugby union tournament in history.

Meanwhile, after former AFL player Mitch Brown came out as bisexual, he credited players of the AFLW for paving the way and “providing a safe space for me to do what I did”

Treaty Yeah!

In November, the state of Victoria signed a landmark treaty with its Indigenous people, the first in Australia’s history despite many precedents in other colonised countries. The written agreement delivers a formal apology to First Nations people and establishes an accountability panel and “truth-telling” body to provide advice to the government (separate to the proposed national Voice, but perhaps a harbinger for the future).

“It is not about dwelling in the past, nor laying blame,” reads the treaty. “It is about acknowledging that the past still shapes the present and choosing to do better from here.”

First Ladies

At the Emmys, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri made history as the youngest Black woman to receive three acting nominations – and was also the first woman nominated for both acting and directing in the comedy category in the same year.

Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win a Grammy for Best Country Album. And Sarah Snook, former marie claire Woman of the Year, scooped her first Tony Award for her Broadway performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray. And don’t forget Barkaa’s ARIA gong for Best Hip Hop/Rap Release, the first Indigenous woman to win the category. Yes, these women deserve their flowers.

Fashion’s New Era

The spring/summer 2026 shows marked fashion’s most significant month in a lifetime. A round of musical chairs saw new creative directors at the houses of Chanel, Dior, Bottega Veneta, Celine, Versace, Loewe and Balenciaga – and their big debuts delivered.

Matthieu Blazy reinvented shirts and tweed jackets at Chanel, jazzed up with feathers and flourishes, while Jonathan Anderson melded classicism and campiness at Dior. Fashion should be bold and boundary-breaking, fantastical and thought-provoking, and now all roads and runways point north.

Big Reunion

Nothing says good news like nostalgia-core. In 2025, a pop-culture time machine whisked us back to the halcyon days of yore. From a Britpop renaissance at the Oasis tour, Victoria Beckham’s Netflix docuseries recalling the glory of girl power to a surprise Camp Rock reunion performance, Freakier Friday reboot and Joey, Pacey and Jen getting sentimental during a live read of the Dawson’s Creek pilot.

Justice Rewritten

French woman Gisèle Pelicot became an international figure in 2024 after publicly testifying at her mass-rape trial. This year, her courageous stand sparked systemic change.

France’s parliament voted to enshrine the need for consent to the legal definition of rape and sexual assault, a landmark reform that galvanised conversations across the world. Meanwhile, Pelicot, 73, was awarded France’s most prestigious civic accolade and named a knight of the Legion of Honour. Long live her legacy.

Homegrown Hits

In July, Triple J marked its 50th anniversary with a Hottest 100 poll comprised exclusively of Australian songs. The top gong went to the 1989 INXS classic “Never Tear Us Apart”, followed by The Hilltop Hoods’ “The Nosebleed Section”, “Untouched” by The Veronicas and another 97 bangers, ballads and political pub rockers. Queue up the playlist for your next roadie.

The Summer We Turned Obsessed

Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah? Either way, Team Monoculture. On Wednesday evenings in August and September, pubs turned TV into a spectator sport as masses gathered to view The Summer I Turned Pretty. In an age of choose-your-own-binge streaming, the joy of watching the same thing at the same time, of laughing and crying as one, of the inevitable water cooler conversation, was palpable. The series topped the charts on Prime Video in 140 countries, highlighting a collective craving for good old-fashioned romance.

The World’s Most Wholesome Man

First he broke the internet with his Bonds campaign, smouldering as a python coiled around his bare torso. Then he spoke passionately about his sister Bindi’s endometriosis journey, advocating, “It is time for men to discuss and prioritise women’s health.”

And finally, conservationist Robert Irwin cha-cha-ed onto America’s Dancing with the Stars ballroom with infectious energy, flair and raw emotion (check out his tear-jerking performances dedicated to his parents). Endearingly earnest, he’s been dubbed a walking green flag and Australia’s brightest export since his late, great dad, Steve Irwin. And did we mention he loves animals?

Coldplay-Gate

Kiss cams have always been ethically dubious, as is public shaming. But footage of a CEO and his HR director embracing at a Coldplay concert set the internet alight and provided some low-stakes levity when the world needed it. As did the subsequent promo video for the company involved, starring a wry Gwyneth Paltrow as spokesperson.

Not A Fun Run

British former footballer Fran Hurndall ran from Perth to Sydney to highlight Australia’s most urgent epidemic. Her inspiration was her sister, and all victim-survivors of domestic violence. “What I’ve had to go through is absolutely nothing compared to the struggle of those women who live with the threat of domestic violence every single day,” she said.

A Final Bow

Misty Copeland, the American Ballet Theatre’s first Black female principal dancer, has hung up her pointe shoes, but not before one final dance at a New York gala in October.

The people’s ballerina portrayed the role of Juliet alongside Calvin Royal III – the company’s first Black male principal dancer in two decades – in a performance rich in emotion and symbolism. Said Oprah Winfrey at the event, “Misty didn’t just perform ballet, she changed it.

The 2025 marie claire Women of the Year Awards had an unmistakable energy — the kind that fills a room when brilliant women come together. It was an evening dedicated to Australia’s changemakers: the activists shifting policy, the creatives expanding culture, and the leaders rewriting what influence looks like in this country.

From the moment guests stepped inside, it was clear this wasn’t just an awards night. Every detail was designed to celebrate women, from the decor and music to the quiet moments of connection across the table between honourees. Even the wine poured into each glass carried its own story of female excellence.

Celebrating Women in Every Moment

In partnership with Fine Wines by Constellation Brands, the event showcased the finest American wines from the world’s most iconic wineries: Robert Mondavi Winery, voted one of the top 50 wineries in the world. And behind these celebrated wines stands a trailblazing woman whose career reflects the night’s very spirit of achievement, Genevieve Janssens, Chief Winemaker.

Born into a French wine-growing family in Morocco and trained among Europe’s most respected winemakers, Janssens has spent more than two decades shaping Napa Valley’s most acclaimed varieties, like the renowned Cabernet Sauvignon Chardonnay. Her philosophy combines precision, intuition and creativity. It’s an approach that has established her as one of the most influential figures in modern American winemaking.

Genevieve, like many of the women celebrated at the awards is committed to her craft and bringing people together to celebrate. “I’ll never stop making wine. It’s so rewarding, the process, and then bringing people together at the table to share the joy” shares Genevieve Janssens

The Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay welcomed guests with its bright, elegant profile — lively yet refined, much like the honourees gracing the red carpet. As the evening progressed, the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon revealed itself to be the perfect partner during speeches — rich, structured and expressive. It was the kind of wine that invited conversation, connection and reflection; perfectly suited to a night celebrating extraordinary women.

Raising a Glass to Trailblazers

Throughout the night, honourees shared stories of resilience, reinvention and community. Some spoke with raw honesty, others with sharp humour, all with clarity of purpose. Glasses clinked in recognition, not just of personal achievements, but of the collective power of women shaping Australia’s future.

By the final toast, the symbolism was clear. This was more than an awards ceremony; it was a celebration of excellence, influence and legacy. And as guests raised glasses filled with wine crafted by a woman who has spent decades redefining her craft, it encapsulated the evening’s purpose: to honour the women shaping our culture, one extraordinary achievement at a time.

Australian actress Samara Weaving, 33, has announced she’s expecting her first child with husband Jimmy Warden, 34, in seriously chic fashion.

Naturally, the Ready Or Not star took to Instagram to share the news, showing off her growing bump while on the press tour for the film’s highly anticipated sequel. Equal parts polished and playful, the carousel captured Weaving glowing as ever.

From a chocolate-brown sequined gown to a sheer black lace top paired with fluid silk pants, her looks were a masterclass in modern pregnancy dressing.

Ready or Not: Here I Come 😏” she captioned the post, cheekily nodding to the film that helped define her career while debuting the pregnancy news.

While the actress didn’t directly address her announcement or share further details, the post was swiftly flooded with congratulations from fans and A-list friends alike. Fellow Australian actresses Phoebe Tonkin and Claire Holt were among the first to celebrate, alongside Sarah Hyland and Lucy Boynton, who all chimed in with messages of love and excitement.

Samara’s husband Jimmy also joined in on the fun, commenting with a tongue-in-cheek: “congrats! Who is the dad?”

The pair first met on the set of The Babysitter in 2017, where Samara starred as the film’s breakout lead, Bee, while Jimmy worked behind the scenes as a producer. Their on-set collaboration soon turned into a real-life romance.

Just two years later, in 2019, the couple became engaged before quietly tying the knot in a private ceremony. It wasn’t until 2022 that they publicly confirmed they had married — a typically low-key move for the famously private pair.

Now, with a baby on the way, it’s clear the couple are entering their next chapter and, true to form, they’re doing it entirely on their own terms.

Stolen. Adopted. Fighting Back. Inside Korea’s Adoption Scam https://www.marieclaire.com.au/news/stolen-adopted-fighting-back-inside-koreas-adoption-scam/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 22:23:05 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1499047 In the 1980s, many Australian couples bringing children home from South Korea thought they were saving abandoned or orphaned babies. Now adults, these adopted children and their families are discovering it was all a lie. With evidence of fraud and human rights breaches, a reckoning is afoot.

As a child, Anna* had a folder stuffed with documents, a biological jigsaw puzzle that pieced together who she was. “It had all of my adoption paperwork in it, including the story of why I was given up for adoption in South Korea,” she recalls. “It said my mum was a single mother and she couldn’t afford to keep me. She just wanted me to have a better life. Sometimes I’d go to my bedroom alone and read through the folder.”

Adopted by an Australian family as a baby in 1987, Anna grew up faintly curious about her identity but learnt to silence the questions. “I think I internalised the grief and pain so much that I shut off any connection with Korea,” she explains. “I thought, ‘I’m Australian, I don’t need to find [my birth family].’ And that’s how I handled it for most of my life.”

Decades later, Anna contracted Lyme disease, which spurred her to find out more about her family’s medical history. With tempered expectations, she reached out to the social worker agency offering search and reunion services. It set off a chain of events that upended her world.

Anna visited her birth family in Korea last year, which she found healing but also heartbreaking, especially when it came time to leave. Photography Rachel Raymen/Starr Photography.

“Within a week or two, they’d found my birth mother and said that she wanted to have contact with me,” remembers Anna, now 38. “I received a letter from my mum that said she didn’t know I was sent to Australia, and that the doctor had forced her to put me up for adoption. Well actually, [the adoption agency] Eastern Social Welfare Society had translated the letter from Korean into English for me, and they incorrectly translated ‘doctor’ as ‘father’ – I suspect on purpose – so it was a while before I worked it all out.

My mum also said I have three older sisters, and that my dad and her were married when I was born. I realised then that what I’d been reading and telling myself my whole life wasn’t true, because in my paperwork it says my mum was a single mother who’d only been dating my dad, and that I had no siblings. It was the opposite of what my paperwork said.” Anna is one of a reported 3600 adoptees sent to Australia via Eastern Social Welfare Society (ESWS), South Korea’s largest adoption agency, since 1978.

Now, a dark history of illicit practices and systemic human rights violations is coming to light. Earlier this year, the initial findings of South Korea’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a three-year inquiry investigating Korea’s international adoption program, revealed government agencies and adoption organisations had falsified birth certificates, misrepresented children as orphans and failed to secure legal parental consent. (ESWS was contacted for this feature, but declined to comment.)

“According to a social worker who worked at Eastern Social Welfare Society at the time of my adoption, social workers would go to the hospitals and compete against other adoption agencies,” says Anna. “They would tell the doctors, ‘We’ll pay you X amount of dollars. We will give you cash for newborn babies.’ It was almost like a sales job: they had to hit certain numbers and find babies to reach targets. And where do you get babies to send overseas? Directly from the hospitals where the babies are born.”

The inquiry also confirmed allegations of coercion in the system. “In my case, the doctor knew my dad had reservations around me being female because he already had three girls,” says Anna. “So he really played on that, telling my dad, ‘You should be having a boy.’ My mum said that my dad verbally agreed to [my adoption]. She didn’t consent to it, and neither of them legally consented because there was no written consent. In Korean law, you need to have written consent to relinquish a child, and at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission this year, a lack of written consent was confirmed as a human rights violation.”

While processing the shock, upheaval and institutional betrayal, Anna has nurtured a relationship with her birth family, and last year she visited them in Korea. “Leaving them felt like I was being adopted all over again, like I was being forced to separate from them again,” she recalls.

“Except this time I was consciously aware. It was heartbreaking.” The unravelling of truths has shattered her birth mother. “The impact on her is profound and unimaginable,” shares Anna.

“Immediately after I was born, I was taken away from her. She didn’t get to see or hold me. Women were being taken advantage of during their most vulnerable time. When I found my mum, it was almost like she had 30 years of pain locked away and she hadn’t spoken about it to anybody. It felt like I opened up this massive wound for her. To this day, she blames herself that she didn’t protect me enough by saying ‘no’ or just grabbing me. She still struggles to see that she’s a victim in a much larger operation to traffic children, basically.” In stories of fraudulent intercountry adoption, three victims often emerge: the child, the birth parents and the adoptive family.

“My [adoptive] parents have found [the inquiry findings] really hard,” says Pippa*, 39, who was adopted from South Korea in 1986, and grew up in Melbourne.

“They thought they did everything right. They were told to pay a donation that they thought was for nappies and formula in orphanages; now they’re finding out that it could have been to pay off doctors. It really upset them. They’ve read articles suggesting [adoptive parents] were trying to buy us, and they weren’t.” For more than four years, Pippa has been trying to connect with her birth mum, a search she says is marked by “a big cloud and a big question mark”.

One thing she knows is that her paperwork is filled with discrepancies, and that her birth certificate was likely fabricated. “I used to be happy with the unknown,” she says. “I never wanted to look for my birth family until I had my son seven years ago. And then I thought, ‘Wow, this is my first blood relative.’ It made me wonder more about my bloodline and my birth family history. I looked at my son and thought, ‘You’ve got my nose, you’ve got your dad’s eyes,’ that sort of thing … We call our children DoKADs: descendants of Korean adoptees. So he’s a little DoKAD, but he’s going to grow up wanting to know his origins. It’s intergenerational.”

Pippa today, with her seven-year-old son.

The Korean word sosokgam describes a sense of belonging, a deep and inexplicable yearning for home that resonates with many intercountry adoptees. When they discover their story has been steeped in lies, a new layer of existential insecurity rises to the surface. Samara, an intercountry adoptee, travelled to South Korea last year, where she discovered that she was not an orphan. Her paperwork had been falsified and her birth mother never consented to her Australian adoption.

“It really changed everything for me. I didn’t know who I was,” says Samara, who is doing a PhD on South Korean adoption to Australia at Flinders University. “To find out the very foundations of your life – your name, your birthday, your family, the reasons for your adoption – the pillars of your identity … everything you had trusted, everything you had been told, everything you had once believed was built on a lie – [it] was world-shattering. The discovery that my adoption was not a tragic circumstance, but part of a deliberate, calculated system designed to supply children to Western nations for profit, shattered everything I thought I knew about myself. The personal, cultural and existential grief, anger, loss and betrayal are immense and remain ever-present.” For Anna, the emotional heaviness has been consuming.

“There was a time when I didn’t think I’d ever be able to … smile or feel any joy or passion in my life again because I was just so devastated at hearing the scale and systemic nature of this issue,” she says. “I had no faith in humanity. I didn’t trust any government systems. I almost didn’t trust anything in my life.” Meeting her Korean family was healing, and so too was connecting with other intercountry adoptees, including Samara and Pippa, via online support groups. “Until now, I’ve never really felt that anybody truly understands how I feel or what I’ve gone through,” says Anna.

“But we truly can understand each other’s pain, desires – everything. It’s such a bizarre feeling.” Pippa adds, “Growing up, I was the only one adopted, and I didn’t really think I belonged. There was just something missing. But when you’ve connected with people who’ve grown up the same way, you realise you weren’t alone … It’s like long-lost sisters you never knew you had. We speak every day.” Now, the three women (together with a fourth, Blossom, who chose not to be interviewed) have formed grassroots group KADs Connect. They’re advocating for truth and accountability for the Korean adoptee community in Australia, and are lobbying for a national inquiry into the state’s role in unlawful and harmful intercountry adoption practices. “I think a public acknowledgement and inquiry is vital,” says Samara. “Australia carries a long and painful history of forced adoptions: the establishment of global commercial adoption coincided with the legislative end of the forced adoption era and the Stolen Generations. But despite national apologies and inquiries, we want to understand why similar abuses were permitted to occur within Australia’s intercountry adoption program.”

The Australian Government says it’s committed to investigating past wrongdoings. “Labor understands the lifelong consequences of poor adoption practices for intercountry adoptees and their families and the need for a thorough and transparent investigation,” says the Minister for Social Services, Tanya Plibersek.

“We recognise this is a particularly distressing time for Australians who are adopted from Korea. The government is considering the best approach to the investigation and the views that have been put forward by people affected by intercountry adoption.”

Meanwhile, in early October, the South Korean president offered an apology to adoptees and their families affected by the scandal, though many worry it is merely lip service. “The South Korean president’s apology is a positive step, but words alone are not enough,” says Anna, on behalf of KADs Connect. “This isn’t the first apology, and adoptees are still waiting for action. Delivered via Facebook, in Korean, with no adoptee representatives present, it fails to fully acknowledge the state’s role in the adoption system.”

Samara is doing a PhD on South Korean adoption to Australia at Flinders University. Photography Rachel Raymen/Starr Photography.

Fraudulent or not, intercountry adoption is mired in complexities, often flattened down to sugar-coated portrayals of celebrities and their multi-racial broods. “Historically, intercountry adoption has been framed as an act of humanitarianism – designed to ‘rescue’ children,” says Samara.

“This framing casts adoptees as pitiful children, their first families as incapable, and adoptive parents as saviours offering a ‘better life’. But these assumptions erase and hinder any complex conversation about adoption. They ignore and self- congratulate adoptive countries – like Australia and the US – who had a significant role in creating the traumas, violence and vulnerabilities in the countries we supposedly needed rescuing from. And they hide the dark reality that many adoption agencies … were designed to remove and ‘launder’ children from vulnerable women through ostensibly ‘legal’ means.”

According to Damon Martin, social worker and deputy CEO of International Social Service Australia, the ethics of intercountry adoption are muddied by financial incentives.

“When you’re adding money to the process of adopting children, it opens up all these loopholes for corrupt activity to occur,” he explains. “I’ve been working with intercountry adoptees for 20 years and I’ve seen too many examples of poor, illicit and illegal practices. The thing is, it can be really difficult for any receiving country to assess whether there’s been illegal practices, because the dossiers [from the countries of origin] tend to look legitimate.”

He points out that today, there are more than 10,000 intercountry adoptees in Australia and many have no cause to question their past. But with historical, high-profile examples of illegal intercountry adoptions involving Australia – including the Julie Chu child-trafficking ring from Taiwan in the 1980s, the Preet Mandir scandal in India in the noughties, and now the unfolding South Korea violations – more illicit cases are likely to emerge.

Presently, Australia facilitates adoptions with Chile, Colombia, India, Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea (following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, private adoptions through agencies like ESWS have been halted in Korea, with the state taking responsibility).

“Although the Korean program might start to wind up now, the intercountry adoption industry will continue to adapt and shift by sourcing children from other countries and exploiting vulnerabilities,” says Samara.

“We’re witnessing this now in Ukraine and at borders in countries going through social upheaval, with adoption agencies pressuring families to relinquish their children. We’re also witnessing the rise of international surrogacy … which remains almost entirely unregulated. You can see the same myths, assumptions [and] systemic vulnerabilities play out. This is why we really wanted to share our stories and call for an inquiry. We want answers but we also want to ensure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

Now, the women are connecting with what’s been lost and reshaping what comes next, together. “None of us can change what happened to us,” says Anna. “We’re all aware of that. But if we can change it for the future – for future adoptees and for our descendants – that’s what is most important.”

Australian actress Rachael Carpani, best known for her role on iconic drama McLeod’s Daughter’s, has sadly died aged 45.

On Monday, December 15th, the heartbreaking news came via her sister Georgia on Instagram.

“It is with great sadness that Tony and Gael Carpani announce that their beautiful daughter, beloved Australian actress Rachael Carpani, unexpectedly but peacefully passed away after a long battle with chronic illness, in the early hours of Sunday 7th December,” the post read.

No further details around the sad passing were shared, however Carpani’s family asked for privacy in their time of grief.

“The family requests privacy at this very difficult time and will be making no further statements.”

It is difficult to find words for the devastation felt in the wake of the Bondi Beach shooting.

Taking place on Sunday, December 14, two men — since identified as a father and son — targeted an event marking the first day of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights.

The antisemitic terror attack has claimed 15 innocent lives with some 40 others hospitalised at the time of publishing, and one of Sydney’s most beloved beaches remains an active crime scene.

As news of the attack broke, the nation collectively held its breath. Waves of despair, terror and grief followed. They have not receded, and they will not for some time. If, like us, you are searching for ways to support those most affected, there are meaningful ways to help.

Donate To Lifeblood

Lifeblood has called for donations in the wake of the attack, revealing a particular need for O type donors thanks to its ability to be used universally.

“Fewer than 7% of the population are O negative, making it a challenge,” a Lifeblood spokesperson said.“O negative and O positive blood are always in high demand because they are used in emergency situations when a patient’s blood type is unknown.”

The call for Sydney-siders to donate blood has led to an inundation of traffic to the Lifeblood website causing the platform to crash. Bookings to donate blood can still be made however, through the online booking platform.

The organisation assured followers on social media they are “working to fix a temporary outage on our website”, and that “our call centre is working through a high volume of calls”.

Support The Jewish Community

Speaking to the ABC, Jewish House CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel stressed the importance of standing together to ensure the Jewish community feels safe.

“Putting arms around us is absolutely appreciated and necessary,” he said.

“I think those arms need to get wider and wider and more and more people step up … and say we are with the Jewish community.

“The messages of Hanukah, of bringing light, of bringing piece, of bringing togetherness, that needs to be done together. We can’t do it on our own.”

We will update this article as calls for support are made.

Australians are set to be treated to one of the year’s most reliable sky shows, with the Geminid meteor shower reaching its peak this weekend.

The Geminids are expected to deliver bright, frequent streaks as the shower intensifies late Sunday December 14th and into the early hours of Monday December 15th. Early forecasts point to favourable viewing conditions across much of the country, and experts say this year’s low lunar interference could make the display one of the strongest in recent seasons.

For anyone curious about when, where and how to watch, here’s what to know now.

Can You See The Geminid Meteor Shower In Australia?

Yes. The Geminids are visible across Australia — everyone from Darwin to Hobart can catch meteors during the peak window, though how many you see depends on latitude, light pollution and cloud cover.

Northern Australia typically enjoys the highest hourly rates because the shower’s radiant rides higher in the sky up north; southern viewers still get a beautiful show, just fewer meteors per hour on average.

“The Geminids will be particularly good this year — the Moon is out of the way, so the sky will be really dark,” says Professor Jonti Horner (USQ), told SBS News.

When Can I See The Geminid Meteor Shower

The Geminids are active for many nights, but the peak for 2025 falls on the weekend around Sunday 14 December into the early hours of Monday 15 December (local dates). You’ll see meteors anytime after twilight, but the richest display tends to be from midnight through pre-dawn, with a pronounced peak in the early-morning hours (roughly 2–4 a.m. local time in much of Australia).

EarthSky and NASA predict the nominal peak for this year around mid-December, and multiple Australian observatories and news outlets confirm the strongest rates on the weekend nights.

Practical tip: the night before and after peak often still produce a high tally — so if clouds roll in on Sunday, Monday morning can still be rewarding.

What Time Should I Go Out To Watch The Meteor Shower?

Aim for the early-morning window when the radiant is higher and the sky is darkest. For most Australian cities that means:
– Be outside after midnight, with peak odds between 2:00–3:30 a.m. local time. ABC

Before you head out:
– Let your eyes adapt to the dark for at least 15–30 minutes (no phone screens).
– Find a wide, open view with the least light pollution possible.
– Bring a blanket, a reclining chair, and a thermos — you’ll be on deck for a while.

City / RegionBest Viewing Window (Local Time)Peak Conditions
Sydney2:00–4:00 a.m.Radiant high enough for strong hourly rates.
Melbourne2:30–4:30 a.m.Later rise of Gemini delays the best viewing.
Brisbane1:30–3:30 a.m.Radiant climbs earlier due to latitude.
Perth2:00–4:00 a.m.Dark western skies offer excellent contrast.
Adelaide2:00–4:00 a.m.Steady rise of the radiant through the night.
Hobart2:30–4:30 a.m.Lower radiant height pushes the peak slightly later.
Darwin1:00–3:00 a.m.One of the earliest and strongest peak windows.
Canberra2:00–4:00 a.m.High-quality dark-sky viewing just outside the city.
How Many Meteors Will I See Per Hour Based On My State?

There are no guarantees when it comes to the number of meteors we can expect to see during the shower, but given the expected favourable conditions, ABC Science reporting, local observatories and NASA have shared their estimates. The numbers vary per state, starting at an estimated 10 to 20 in Victoria and ranging upward of 40+ in Queensland. See the full breakdown below.

State / TerritoryExpected Meteors Per HourNotes
NSW15–30Best if viewing inland or along darker coastal stretches.
Victoria10–20Lower radiant height; rural VIC performs noticeably better.
Queensland20–40+Northern QLD often sees the strongest rates in Australia.
Western Australia15–35WA’s dry skies and open horizons help lift numbers.
South Australia12–25Ideal outside Adelaide’s light dome.
Tasmania10–20Crisp southern skies, but radiant sits lower.
Northern Territory30+High radiant altitude makes NT one of the best spots.
ACT15–30Great dark-sky access just outside Canberra.

Happy viewing!

Did Timothée Chalamet Just Confirm He’s UK Rapper, EsDeeKid? https://www.marieclaire.com.au/news/celebrity/timothee-chalamet-esdeekid/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 23:07:44 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1498039 We spy another celebrity alter ego

The post Did Timothée Chalamet Just Confirm He’s UK Rapper, EsDeeKid? appeared first on marie claire.

]]>
If there’s one thing the internet is never short of it’s conspiracies. It’s latest theory however, that actor Timothee Chalamet is the face behind mysterious UK rapper EsDeeKid, is actually quite compelling.

From his eccentric social media presence to his willingness to completely submerge himself in any role – whether it’s a simple SNL skit or his upcoming film Marty Supreme – the idea the 29-year-old could have an alter ego as a rapper doesn’t feel so farfetched.

Then, there’s the myriad of clues internet sleuths have been digging that could prove Chalamet is leading a double life…

Timothée Fuels The Flames Of Rumours

Currently on the press tour for his film, Marty Supreme, Chalamet was directly asked about the rumours when he sat down with Heart Radio.

The actor played extremely coy, saying: “I got no comment on that.”

But he did, in fact, have more to say. He added, “I’ve got two words on that…” then paused for a moment, searching for those two words and landing on—seven, actually: “All will be revealed in due time.”

Who Is EsDeeKid?

EsDeeKid is an up-and-coming UK rapper who, thanks to a thick Scouse accent, many have deduced hails from Liverpool, England. Produced by LIZZY RECORDS label, the artists dropped his first track in 2024 and has since released an album, Rebel, which features popular tracks like ‘4 Raws’ and ‘Phantom’. He also recently announced a tour across North America and Australia, including shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

EsDeeKid famously keeps his identity hidden by wearing a balaclava in all appearances. But, that hasn’t stopped fans pointing out some key identifiers that could prove he is in fact, the Oscar award-winning, Chalamet.

Is EsDeeKid Actually Timothee Chalamet?

Speculation began with a post from TikToker KJ.Freeman, who despite prefacing that what she was about to say is “probably one of the craziest things you hear on this app today”, began drawing parallels between EsDeeKid and Timothee Chalamet.

The first piece of evidence submitted to the jury (it’s us, we’re the jury), was Chalamet’s attendance of rapper fakemink’s London show earlier this year. Those familiar with EsDeeKid’s songs will already know fakemink appears on his TikTok-viral song, ‘LV Sandals’. Coincidence?

Then, there’s the resemblance of both Chalamet and EsDeeKid’s eyes (both green and with a distinct curve on one eyebrow, one TikToker notes). And, the fact both have been spotted wearing an identical black scarf plastered with white skulls on multiple occasions.

Another notable ‘clues’ or hints fans have pointed out include the double ‘e’ in both their names – Timothee and EsDeeKid – and the fact the actor would be well-equipped to pull off a Scouse accent to help hide his true identity.

Chalamet’s high-school aspirations to become a rapper are also well-documented in widely-shared clips from his teen years performing as “Timmy Tim.”

And, as Freeman put it, an anonymous alter-ego would prove the perfect route for Chalamet to pursue that career avenue without any impact on his pristine Hollywood star.

“The actor-to-musician crossover is very hard to do. The only person who really managed it was Jamie Foxx, and even then, people thought he was doing a Ray Charles impersonation,” she says.

Australia’s Social Media Ban Has Officially Taken Effect— Here’s What To Know https://www.marieclaire.com.au/news/what-to-know-social-media-ban-australia/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 03:51:07 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1500141 Screens down for under-16s

The post Australia’s Social Media Ban Has Officially Taken Effect— Here’s What To Know appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

ICYMI, Australia has officially become the first country in the world to ban social media use for children under 16, in a landmark move that will see young users blocked from platforms including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.

Under the new law, which came into effect at midnight on Wednesday, major social media companies have been ordered to prevent children from accessing their services or face fines of up to $49.5 million.

While the ruling has drawn criticism from tech giants and free speech advocates, it has been widely welcomed by parents, educators and child safety groups.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the moment as a “proud day” for Australian families, positioning the ban as a necessary response to online harms that have rapidly outpaced existing safeguards.

Speaking at a press conference, he said the reform would bring about one of the most significant social shifts the country has seen in decades, with global implications.

A government-commissioned study released earlier this year found that 96 per cent of children aged 10 to 15 were active on social media, with seven in 10 exposed to harmful content. This ranged from misogynistic and violent material to posts promoting eating disorders and suicide.

One in seven children also reported experiencing grooming-style behaviour from adults or older peers, while more than half said they had been subjected to cyberbullying.

Ahead, everything you need to know about Australia’s social media ban.

When Does The Social Media Ban Take Effect?

The Australian Government passed the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill on November 28, 2024, introducing a mandatory minimum age of 16 for accounts on designated social media platforms.

The law came into force today, 10 December 2025, and notably removes the option for parental consent, meaning children under 16 will not be permitted to hold accounts regardless of parental approval.

What Time Does The Social Media Ban Start

Australia’s social media ban for children under 16 came into effect at midnight local time, on December 10.

Will YouTube Be Banned In Australia For Under 16?

Yes, from 10 December 2025, anyone under 16 in Australia won’t be able to keep or make an account on YouTube. The law does not penalise young people or their families. Instead, it places responsibility on social media companies, which must prevent under-16s from holding accounts or face fines of up to around $50 million.

Is Roblox Apart Of The Social Media Ban?

Roblox, an online gaming platform, is currently excluded from the ban. However, the government has made it clear that the current list of platforms included in the social media ban is subject to change, with the eSafety Commissioner noting she will not “totally turn off the spigot.”

“We’ve been talking to the likes of Yubo, which is a French site. We expected there will be some migration, and some of these will become age-restricted social media platforms,” she added.

Communications Minister Anika Wells has also described the policy as a “whack-a-mole situation,” acknowledging that new platforms and apps will inevitably continue to emerge for teens to use.

What Apps Are Included In The Social Media Ban?

The ban will apply to major platforms including YouTube, X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Twitch, Threads and Kick. The tech companies behind these services could face fines of up to $50 million if they fail to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from holding accounts.

Will Digital ID Be Mandatory In Australia In 2025?

Australia’s Digital ID is optional in 2025, however it will soon be hard to avoid. From age verification to business logins, Digital ID is increasingly the backstage pass to everyday digital life.

What Social Media Is Not Getting Banned In Australia?

Multiple education and messaging-based apps have been excluded from the ban, including:
Roblox
Pinterest
WhatsApp
Lemon8
LEGO Play
Google Classroom
Messenger
LinkedIn
YouTube Kids
Discord

How Are Tech Companies Verifying Users’ Ages?

To comply with the new law, platforms are verifying users’ ages using official ID or AI tools that estimate age via facial scanning. A government-funded trial last year convinced officials this could be done without compromising privacy, but the technology has raised concerns elsewhere.

In the UK, teens reportedly used video game character images to bypass age checks, while critics warn that biometric verification poses privacy risks for all users. In Australia, platforms will be required to delete users’ data immediately after age verification.

Pamela Anderson has opened up about the romantic relationship she shared with Liam Neeson, confirming that their connection began after filming wrapped on their summer box-office hit, The Naked Gun.

The actress revealed to People that while the pair developed a bond on set, their relationship only turned romantic once production had ended. Following the end of filming, Anderson and Neeson spent a private and intimate week together at his home in upstate New York.

“If you must know, Liam and I were romantically involved for a short while but only after we finished filming,” she told People.

She clarified that she stayed in her own room during the visit and that assistants and even family members were present at various points.

During that time, the two shared a series of sweet, domestic moments. They dined at a small French restaurant where Neeson playfully introduced her as the “future Mrs. Neeson”, and spent time tending to his garden, where Anderson helped restore a rosebush that had become overgrown with mint.

Their brief interlude together culminated in what she calls a “romantic, lost week,” before the pair parted to continue work on separate films.

Romance speculation reignited months later as the two reunited on the promotional trail for The Naked Gun, a reboot of the beloved comedy franchise originally spun from the 1982 TV series Police Squad!.

Throughout the summer, Anderson and Neeson appeared openly affectionate at premieres and public appearances in New York, London and Berlin.

They were also seen joking and flirting in promotional videos for the film, and Anderson was photographed giving Neeson a kiss on the cheek on the red carpet.

According to Anderson, their playful public dynamic was genuine and never intended as a publicity stunt. She has maintained that their feelings were real, and that their connection during the press tour was rooted in affection rather than performance, saying it was “a little bit like a Nancy Meyers film.”

Today, however, she describes their relationship as a close and supportive friendship. “I adore Liam,” Pamela says, “but we are better friends, in full honesty.”

After 4 Years, Toyah Cordingley’s Murderer Has Finally Been Charged https://www.marieclaire.com.au/news/crime/toyah-cordingley-murderer-charged/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 07:20:54 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1500052 "A loveable, innocent, full-of-life young woman"

A former Far North Queensland nurse has been found guilty of the 2018 murder of Toyah Cordingley, a case that now joins the long and devastating list of Australian women killed through gendered violence.

He has been sentenced to a non-parole period of 25 years.

After seven hours of deliberations, a Supreme Court jury unanimously found Rajwinder Singh, 41, stabbed Ms Cordingley and cut her throat on Wangetti Beach before fleeing to India, where he lived in hiding for more than four years.

In leaving the country, he abandoned his wife, three children and parents who were financially dependent on him and would later lose their home, according to ABC News.

During the trial, Singh was described as a capable and respected nurse by his colleagues, a portrayal that stood in stark contrast to the violence of the crime.

What Happened To Toyah Cordingley?

Toyah Cordingley’s Death

Ms Cordingley, a 24-year-old animal shelter volunteer, had gone to the beach on the afternoon of October 21, 2018, to walk her dog, Indie. Her father, Troy Cordingley, found her body the following morning after hours of searching. Indie was found alive nearby, tightly tied to a tree.

Police have said they believe the attack may have been sexually motivated.

The verdict was delivered at the end of a four-week retrial in Cairns, eight months after Singh’s first trial ended in a hung jury. As the decision was read aloud, emotion surged through the public gallery. Ms Cordingley’s father was heard calling out, “rot in hell, you bastard,” while Singh sat motionless in the dock.

Outside court, Ms Cordingley’s mother, Vanessa Gardiner, described the outcome as long-awaited justice, but not closure.

“Today is a big piece of this journey that needed an ending and most of all, justice for our Toyah,” she said. “This event turned our world upside down for years and we all know a special part of our fun, tight-knit family is now gone for ever, due to the actions of this individual.”

She remembered her daughter as a “loveable, innocent, full-of-life young woman” and said the family would never forgive Singh. She also acknowledged the wider circle of harm, including Ms Cordingley’s former partner Marco Heidenreich and Singh’s own wife and children.

“There are multiple victims in this,” she said.

Queensland Police Inspector Sonia Smith said the murder had left a “deep scar” on the Far North Queensland community and described the investigation as one of the largest and most complex in the region’s history.

Toyah Cordingley’s Death
Delhi Police officers escort Rajwinder Singh after being arrested in relation to Toyah’s murder. Image: Getty

“[Detectives] have made significant sacrifices to their personal lives to ensure no stone was left unturned in this investigation,” she said.

The case rested on circumstantial evidence tracing Singh’s movements through Ms Cordingley’s phone. Police determined that the movements of his blue Alfa Romeo matched the phone’s path after it left the beach, turning her device into a silent witness.

The morning after her body was found, Singh booked a one-way flight to New Delhi, telling his wife he would be gone only a few days. It would take more than four years, and a $1 million reward, before he was found.

Singh was arrested at a Sikh gurdwara in New Delhi in November 2022. He did not challenge extradition and was returned to Australia in early 2023.

During the trial, the Crown argued that only the killer could have possessed Ms Cordingley’s phone and that Singh’s sudden flight overseas was not coincidence but consciousness of guilt.

Justice Crowley told the court the most likely motive for the “shocking and sickening act of violence” was that Ms Cordingley had confronted Singh about behaviour of a “sexual and perverted” nature.

His decision to take her phone after killing her, the judge said, suggested she may have recorded Singh or was preparing to report him to authorities.

In that possibility lies one of the most confronting truths of this case. It reaches far beyond a single victim and into a national reckoning with how often women’s safety depends on navigating male emotions and actions as a matter of survival.

Clear your calendar for August 2, 2027. A total solar eclipse so rare and cinematic it’s being dubbed the “eclipse of the century” will sweep across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, plunging entire cities into midday darkness for more than six minutes.

According to NASA, the Moon will fully obscure the Sun for a staggering six minutes and 23 seconds, placing the eclipse among the longest totalities theoretically possible on Earth.

Although physics allows for a maximum theoretical totality of seven minutes and 32 seconds, eclipses reaching anywhere near that limit are exceptionally rare.

The last comparable event occurred on July 11, 1991, when a total solar eclipse swept across Hawaii, Mexico and much of Central and South America, lasting six minutes and 53 seconds at its peak.

The next eclipse of similar length is not expected until 2114.

Where Will The Eclipse Be Visible In Australia?

Unlike many long-duration eclipses that unfold over open ocean or remote terrain, the 2027 path of totality cuts across major, well-connected regions. For viewers in Australia, however, witnessing it in full will require some travelling.

The Moon’s shadow will cut across parts of North Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe.

Among the most sought-after viewing destinations is Luxor, Egypt, where observers will experience nearly the full length of totality alongside some of the world’s most iconic ancient monuments.

The map below shows the full path of the eclipse as it moves across the globe.

Eclipse 2027 100 years
Image: Time & Date

What Makes This Eclipse So Special?

Technically, the longest eclipse of the century occurred in 2009, but it peaked over the open Pacific Ocean, with land visibility limited to an uninhabited island. The 2027 event is capturing global attention because this time, millions of people will be able to see it clearly and safely from major cities.

The lengthy darkness is the result of a rare cosmic sweet spot. The eclipse will occur just hours before the Moon reaches perigee, its closest point to Earth, making it appear slightly larger in the sky and allowing it to block the Sun for an extended stretch.

Other Major Total Solar Eclipses Ahead

 • August 12, 2026 — Greenland, Iceland, Spain; partial eclipse in parts of northeastern U.S. and Canada
 • August 2, 2027 — Spain, North Africa, Middle East
 • July 22, 2028 — Australia and New Zealand, including Sydney
 • November 25, 2030 — Southern Africa and Australia
 • March 30, 2033 — Alaska, including Nome and Utqiagvik (2m 37s max)
 • March 20, 2034 — Africa, Middle East and Asia (intersects 2027 path in Egypt)
 • September 2, 2035 — China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea
 • July 13, 2037 — Australia and New Zealand
 • December 26, 2038 — Australia and New Zealand
 • August 12, 2045 — Sweeps across the continental U.S. with over six minutes of totality

What Is A Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun’s light and casting a shadow across parts of the planet. Depending on the alignment, the eclipse can be total, partial or annular.

During a total eclipse, day briefly turns to twilight as the Sun is fully covered and its glowing outer atmosphere becomes visible.

Australia was treated to a breathtaking celestial show just weeks ago and tonight, the sky is preparing for another encore. Ribbons of pink, green and violet may once again ripple across the horizon as a severe geomagnetic storm sweeps past Earth.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued an alert for December 9, with conditions ripe for the appearance of the Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights.

The phenomenon occurs when charged solar particles collide with Earth’s magnetic field, igniting the upper atmosphere in waves of luminous colour.

If the storm reaches its predicted intensity, the lights could be visible as far west as the outskirts of Perth, with Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia also in line for a rare display. And for anyone who missed November’s showing, tonight offers a second chance to catch the sky quietly blushing after dark.

Aurora Australis

Where Can You See Aurora Australis Tonight?

For the best chance of catching the show, head somewhere dark and clear with a view to the south. City lights will dull the colours, so rural lookouts, beaches and coastal cliffs are your best bet. Parts of New South Wales (including Sydney), Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia are all poised to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

While auroras can be visible to the naked eye, particularly the soft reds and pinks, the most vivid hues reveal themselves through a camera lens. A 10- to 15-second exposure is enough to capture the full sweep of colour.

Patience is also key, with displays often lasting between 15 minutes and several hours.

What Time Is The Aurora Tonight?

Auroras are most active in the hours surrounding midnight, typically between 10pm and 2am local time.

With stronger geomagnetic conditions forecast for tonight, that window could stretch earlier into the evening and closer to dawn. While sightings are possible outside these peak hours, displays tend to be fainter and less defined.

For real-time tracking, the Space Weather Prediction Centre offers rolling 30-minute forecasts showing the aurora’s location and intensity as conditions evolve.

CityEstimated Best 2-Hour Window (Local Time)
Sydney8:15 PM – 10:15 PM
Melbourne8:40 PM – 10:40 PM
Hobart9:10 PM – 11:10 PM
Adelaide8:40 PM – 10:40 PM
Perth7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Brisbane6:50 PM – 8:50 PM
Canberra8:20 PM – 10:20 PM
Darwin6:45 PM – 8:45 PM
Why Is Aurora Australis Happening?

The lights are caused by a geomagnetic storm, a celestial ripple created when charged particles are ejected from the Sun during an event known as a coronal mass ejection.

When those particles collide with gases in our atmosphere, they glow like neon.

Which Direction To Look For Aurora In Australia?

In Australia, you should look towards the south when searching for the Aurora Australis. Auroras form around Earth’s magnetic poles, and because Australia sits in the southern hemisphere, the lights typically appear low on the southern horizon, especially from southern states like Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and the southern parts of Western Australia and NSW.

The feud between rappers Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson and Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs is long and well-documented – partly in thanks to Jackson’s often amusing antics throughout the years. With the release of the 50 Cent-produced documentary on Diddy, The Reckoning, interest and commentary (again, led by Jackson) on the rift is renewed.

Last week, the ‘Candy Shop’ rapper gave an exclusive interview with ABC News in the U.S. about the new doco and fans were quick to point out that it was a potentially strategic choice.

“50 Cent agreed to do an interview with ABC news station because it’s one of the few stations they’re allowed to watch in prison,” one comment claimed.

Turns out, they were right with 50 Cent commenting on the post to write: “I thought about it – what’s wrong with that?”

However, in the ABC interview, Jackson explained that his actions aren’t because of a “beef” with Diddy, rather exposing his behaviour.

“What they consider pre-existing beef for 20 years is me being uncomfortable with him suggesting that he takes me shopping,” Jackson explained, “It’s not personal.”

“I think it’s important to also let people know that the show is not completely the perspectives of people that did not like Sean,” director Alex Stapleton added, “We weren’t trying to just get the highlights, the salacious details. You know that the real goal was to storytell.”

Since The Reckoning premiered (and well before) Jackson has been sharing a string of humuous memes and posts on his Instagram.

50 Cent & P Diddy’s Feud, Explained

Early 2000s

In November 2002, 50 Cent and Diddy worked together on a remix of a song by the late The Notorious B.I.G.; during the remix, 50 Cent subtly diss-rapped Diddy.

By 2003, Diddy presented 50 Cent with the “Best Rap Video” award at the MTV Video Music Awards, indicating they were still publicly on good terms at the time. However, 50 Cent later described their relationship as more professional than friendly, saying he never really “partied or hung out” with Diddy.

2005–2006

In August 2005, their beef deepened over business when 50 Cent tried to sign rapper Mase to his G-Unit label after Mase sought to leave Diddy’s label. According to 50 Cent, Diddy made the deal unworkable.

Then in September 2006, 50 Cent released the diss track ‘The Bomb’ (also known as ‘Hip Hop’), in which he insinuated that Diddy had knowledge about The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 murder. That marked the moment their rivalry became public and deeply personal.

Late 2000s–2010s

Despite the diss track, the two sometimes still crossed paths professionally; for instance the 2007 remix, ‘I Get Money’ along with Jay-Z, which saw all three appear at Screamfest months later, together.

Business rivalry became a recurring theme for the duo. Diddy was aligned with Ciroc vodka, while 50 Cent later aligned with rival brand Effen Vodka (from 2016). 50 Cent used this rivalry to continue mocking Diddy’s business ventures and singing voice — arguing, for example, that Ciroc “wasn’t real” vodka.

Even though tensions remained, there were times when the feud seemed to cool. Notably in 2018, after the death of Diddy’s longtime partner Kim Porter, 50 Cent publicly offered condolences — a moment that suggested some degree of respect or at least distance.

In that same year, Diddy publicly downplayed the feud: on a radio show he claimed 50 Cent “loves me,” and invited him to be friends — though many saw it as more public damage control than genuine reconciliation.

2023–2024

In November 2023, when news of a lawsuit from former partner Cassie Ventura against Diddy became public, 50 Cent publicly mocked the settlement and hinted the drama was “just beginning.”

“First, he denied that it even happened, and then the tape comes out — so that means everything that n—- says is a lie,” 50 Cent told The Hollywood Reporter. “When someone watches that, if they have a daughter and they can imagine her being under those circumstances, that s— is crazy. Like, they let him get away with it.”

After Diddy’s arrest in September 2024, 50 Cent announced that he was producing a documentary about Diddy, signalling he wasn’t just trolling, but engaging in a long-term strategy to “expose” Diddy.

Lando Norris held his nerve in a tense Abu Dhabi finale on Sunday, December 7, to clinch his first Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, finishing third behind race winner Max Verstappen and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.

Waiting trackside was one of his most vocal supporters, Portuguese model and actress Margarida Corceiro. Overwhelmed with emotion after the chequered flag, Norris broke down in tears in his cockpit before leaping from the car to celebrate.

Moments later, he was photographed in an emotional embrace with Corceiro, who was also visibly crying, before joining his family for post-race photos.

The 23-year-old model, widely known as “Magui”, has been linked to Norris since 2023, though both have repeatedly played down their relationship.

On this night, however, their very public display left little room for doubt. With Norris now crowned world champion, attention has naturally shifted to the woman celebrating beside him.

Scroll on for everything we know about Lando Norris’ girlfriend.

Margarida Corceiro is a Portuguese model, actress, business owner and social media influencer. Born on October 26, 2002, she began modelling at just 10 years old and is signed to Portugal’s Central Models agency. She has built a successful acting career across Portuguese television and film, with credits including Morangos com Açúcar, Punto Nemo and Hotel Amor.

She is also an entrepreneur, having co-founded the swimwear brand Missus with her cousin, Marta Matia. Beyond the screen, Corceiro commands a major digital following, with more than two million followers on Instagram.

How Long Have Lando Norris & Margarida Corceiro Been Together?

Lando Norris and Margarida Corceiro were first linked in May 2023, with their relationship quietly unfolding over the following year. The pair dated until around August 2024, marking an initial on-and-off relationship that spanned roughly 15 months.

They later parted ways, with Norris confirming in late 2024 that he was single. But the split proved short-lived. By May 2025, Corceiro was once again a familiar presence at Formula 1 circuits, cheering Norris on at the Monaco Grand Prix. The pair were later spotted holidaying together in Ibiza that August, before Norris publicly confirmed their reunion in September 2025.

Speaking to British Vogue, Norris reflected on their bond:

“We met a few years ago, but we were never really together….until more recently. She’s someone I can very much be myself with. Very down to earth and she lives quite a crazy life as well. It’s nice when we can both just [rent] a boat for the day or go home together and chill.”

When they’re not at the track, their shared guilty pleasure is The Summer I Turned Pretty which Corceiro introduced him to.

Norris has also been candid about navigating public scrutiny. “I don’t think anyone can look at a bad comment from someone and move on like nothing’s ever happened,” he said. “But [Margarida is] quite wise to all of it… It affects me. A lot less than it did. I pay a lot less attention to it now.”

Trigger Warning: This article discusses alleged sexual assault and sex trafficking.

A week before Sean ‘P Diddy‘ Combs was arrested on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution, a novel purported to be the late Kim Porter’s memoir titled Kim’s Lost Words: A Journey For Justice, From The Other Side, began making its way up the Amazon Best Sellers list.

As the federal trial for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs began and its first week of testimonies – including that of Combs’ other ex, Cassie Ventura – were heard details from the alleged memoir once again made headlines.

The 59-page book, published under Kimberly A. Porter’s name along with “Jamal T Millwood” – a pseudonym – claims to be collated from Porter’s diaries, which were allegedly saved on a flash drive and shared with friends before her death, with the opening page reading: “Kim Porter’s final wishes was for this Memoir/Diary to be made public…”

The ‘memoir’ details alleged sexual encounters between Diddy and other celebrities, as well as graphic and disturbing accounts of Kim’s own experiences.

It’s since been revealed that the author behind the pseudonym is Chris Todd (real name Todd Christopher Guzze), who – in an interview with Rolling Stone – admitted he was unable to provide proof of the content’s legitimacy. Though he “believes it to be true,” the files he allegedly received from two “music industry” sources have been immediately debunked by Kim’s four children, three of which she shared with media mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

In a joint statement released to Instagram by Kim’s four children, Christian, 26, and Jessie and D’Lila, 17-year-old twins, whose father is Sean Combs, along with Quincy Brown, Porter’s eldest son with AI B. Sure! the children said they felt compelled to “speak out” after seeing “so many hurtful and false rumours circulating” about their parents.

The post went on to say: “Claims that our mom wrote a book are simply untrue. She did not. And anyone claiming to have a manuscript is misrepresenting themselves. Additionally, please understand that any so-called ‘friend’ speaking on behalf of our mom or her family is not a friend. Nor do they have her best interests at heart.”

The controversy came to light at a time when more details about Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and his inner circle were starting to come to light, subsequently causing people to rethink public perception of Justin Bieber, and even question the extent of Diddy’s relationship with Usher.

Separately, 50 Cent confirmed he’ll be producing a docuseries for Netflix about the allegations against Diddy.

As the landmark trial against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs continues, we take a deep dive into his relationship with Kim Porter, his ex-partner and mother of his children.

Kim Porter And Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Relationship

Born Kimberly Antwinette Porter, model, and actress Kim, and Sean Combs first began dating around 1994, just as his star was beginning to rise. Before meeting Combs, Kim had a child with her ex-husband, singer AI B. Sure.

Quincy, Kim’s eldest son, was three by the time she and Diddy started dating, with Combs officially adopting Quincy as their relationship continued.

In 1998, Porter and Combs welcomed their first child together, but just a year after their son Christian Combs was born, the couple split, and Diddy’s relationship with Jennifer Lopez began.

The separation resulted in a year-long Family Court battle, the details of which were never disclosed but a statement from Diddy’s lawyer noted that the agreement allowed for “full involvement by both parents.”

In 2003, Combs and Porter reunited and the couple went on to have two more children – twin daughters, D’Lila Star Combs and Jessie James Combs, in 2006.

However, their short-lived reunion only lasted until 2007, when just a year after giving birth to their twins, the model broke things off for the last time.

Why Did Kim Porter And Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Break Up?

In an interview with Essence, Kim spoke about the circumstances surrounding her and Diddy’s final goodbye as being marred in an unravelling of trust.

After the interviewer asked Kim why she left in such a “dramatic” way – referring to reports that she waited till he was out of town before she packed up the house and left – cars and all, Kim responded: “Because there was no other way. You think he would have let me walk out the door? He wouldn’t have wanted me to go.”

Clarifying that she wasn’t scared, Kim went on to say “I wanted him to know I wasn’t breaking up with him for two weeks-or maybe leaving for two days. If I pack up everything – twins and all – it means I’m out! Puffy’s an action person, not a talk person. So I had to have an action. Telling him, ‘Babe, I’m leaving’ was not gonna do it.”

“I left because at this point in my life I want something different for myself. I invested ten years, I have children, and I’ve always stood by him. But now it’s time for me and what I want to do for Kim.”

Who Are Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Seven Kids?

While Combs has seven children in total, Kim Porter and Diddy share three biological children: Christian, 26, and 17-year-old twins Jessie and D’Lila, as well as Quincy Brown, Kim’s son with AI B Sure, whom Combs legally adopted when he was three.

Sean Combs’ eldest child is Justin Combs, 30, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Misa Hylton.

His eldest daughter, born in 2006, the same year as his twin daughters, is Chance Combs, 18, whom Diddy shares with businesswoman Sarah Chapman.

In 2022, Love Sean Combs was born to model Dana Tran, and although Combs has remained single, he announced the birth of his youngest via X (formerly Twitter): “I’m so blessed to welcome my baby girl Love Sean Combs to the world. Mama Combs, Quincy, Justin, Christian, Chance, D’Lila, Jessie and myself all love you so much! God is the Greatest!

What Happened To Kim Porter?

Combs ex-girlfriend Kim Porter was only 47 when she died of lobar pneumonia. Porter had reportedly been suffering from flu-like symptoms for weeks at the time of her death, as confirmed by a coroner’s report following the death.

In an Instagram post shortly after Porter’s death, Sean Combs broke his silence, sharing: “I don’t know what I’m going to do without you baby. I miss you so much. Today I’m going to pay tribute to you, I’m going to try and find the words to explain our unexplainable relationship.”

In a statement released by Kim’s children addressing the emergence of their mother’s “fake” memoir, the children also requested that her memory “not be tainted by horrific conspiracy theories.”

Unpacking The Controversy Around Pantone’s 2026 Colour Of The Year https://www.marieclaire.com.au/news/opinion/pantone-2026-colour-of-the-year/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 04:47:31 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1499701 Serenity or controversial privilege?

The post Unpacking The Controversy Around Pantone’s 2026 Colour Of The Year appeared first on marie claire.

]]>

Pantone’s Colour of the Year is more than just a design choice; it’s a cultural marker, reflecting the collective mood, direction, and energy of the moment. Each selection is meant to capture where we are and where we’re headed.

Which is why the announcement of Cloud Dancer, or 11-4201, a delicate, almost spectral white, as the 2026 choice has left many feeling perplexed.

White, after all, is the quintessential neutral—a colour traditionally linked with purity, clarity, and simplicity. Yet, Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute, contends that the choice symbolises “a calming influence in a frenetic society rediscovering the value of measured consideration and quiet reflection.”

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone, echoes this sentiment, describing the hue as a “billowy, balanced white imbued with a feeling of serenity.”

She positions it as a minimalist antidote to the sensory overload of modern life, offering not just a colour, but a reprieve.

In colour theory, it’s a soft unassuming presence — a space for stillness to step away from the noise and reflect.

However, we’re not just dealing with theory and herein lies the controversy of Cloud Dancer’s selection. White, after all, is not a neutral entity; it carries a historical and political weight. As such, some are arguing that the choice feels out of touch, calling it “dystopian” and “pretentious.”

It has long been a symbol of wealth, privilege, and exclusion, and in today’s climate of heightened racial tensions and anti-immigration rhetoric, choosing white can be easily perceived as insensitive or even tone-deaf.

In 2024, Pantone selected Peach Fuzz as its Colour of the Year, followed by Mocha Mousse in 2025, both hues reflecting natural skin tones.

Responding to critics who questioned the racial undertones of these choices, Laurie Pressman explained, “Skin tones did not factor into this at all. With Peach Fuzz and Mocha Mousse, people were asking if this was about skin tones. And I think we were going, ‘Wow, really?’ Because, for us, it’s really about, at such a basic level, what are people looking for that colour can hope to answer?”

Yet, as The New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman points out, “Given the recent political discourse, when I hear ‘white,’ less salubrious associations leap to my mind.”

Fashion analyst and trend forecaster Mandy Lee echoed similar sentiments in a video, calling the choice “tone-deaf.” She argued that Pantone’s decision is “inaccurate” for failing to consider the broader cultural, political, and economic context. “How is it not a factor?” she asked, pointing to the rise of white nationalism and its increasing prominence on the global stage.

Some have also compared the selection to Sydney Sweeney’s infamous American Eagle ad, where the wordplay on “jeans” and “genes” led to accusations of promoting eugenics. “Did Sydney Sweeney have a say in this,” one commenter remarked on Pantone’s announcement post, while another wrote, “is this rage bait?”

Despite the criticism, Pantone remains firm in its explanation. The selection of Cloud Dancer is meant to offer a symbol of peace and reflection, a colour that provides a sense of calm in an age of hyperactivity.

But in the current political climate, where race, identity, and nationalism are such charged issues, can a colour so intertwined with historical and social significance truly offer the reprieve Pantone envisions?

The German state banquet at Windsor Castle on December 3 delivered all the expected pageantry of royal diplomacy, but it was Princess Kate’s jewellery choice that quietly stole the night.

Arriving alongside Prince William for the white-tie event hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the Princess of Wales unveiled the largest and rarest tiara she has ever worn.

For the first time, Kate stepped out in Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara, a 19th-century heirloom that had not been seen in public for 20 years. The appearance marked only the fifth tiara of her royal life and her third tiara moment of 2025, reinforcing just how sparingly and deliberately she deploys the most formal jewels in the collection.

Commissioned in 1853 by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, the circlet is set with more than 2,600 diamonds. It originally featured opals before they were later replaced with rubies, which remain part of the design today.

The tiara was worn by both the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II, although the late monarch wore it only once, during a 2005 visit to Malta. Kate’s decision to debut the piece at a German state event carried quiet symbolism, given Prince Albert’s own German heritage.

The Princess of Wales paired the historic crown with a shimmering ice-blue Jenny Packham gown, featuring an asymmetric neckline and flowing cape sleeves that trailed behind her through St George’s Hall. She completed the look with the Royal Family Order sash, the Royal Victorian Order star and a pair of diamond drop earrings once worn by Queen Elizabeth.

Until now, Kate’s tiara rotation had remained tightly curated: the Cartier Halo for her 2011 wedding day, followed by appearances in the Lotus Flower Tiara, the Strathmore Rose Tiara and Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot. The Lover’s Knot had been her most recent favourite, worn for both the French and U.S. state visits earlier this year following her return to public life after cancer treatment.

Inside the castle, 152 guests gathered beneath a towering Christmas tree for the glittering banquet. Among those in attendance were Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, along with cultural figures including Claudia Schiffer and composer Hans Zimmer.

Yet amid the ceremony and spectacle, it was the revival of a long-slumbering royal jewel that lingered longest in the memory.

Miley Cyrus and her partner of four years, Maxx Morando, are reportedly engaged. The couple stepped out together on December 2 at the Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere in Los Angeles, where Cyrus was spotted wearing a glittering diamond on her ring finger.

While the pair have kept details of the proposal firmly under wraps, the red carpet appearance served as their first public confirmation of the next chapter in their relationship.

Cyrus and Morando have been together since 2022, after meeting on a blind date. The singer’s engagement ring, which has since sparked widespread discussion among jewellers and fans alike, was custom-designed by Los Angeles-based designer Jacquie Aiche.

The chunky, cushion-cut diamond fuses classic bridal codes with a distinctly modern, rock-and-roll sensibility, a direction we have seen echoed across multiple celebrity engagements this year, including Dua Lipa’s own bold ring choice.

As personal style continues to move toward greater individuality and self-expression, it is little surprise that many are stepping away from the traditional solitaire in favour of designs that feel more eclectic, expressive and deeply personal.

How Many Carats Is Miley Cyrus’s Engagement Ring?

“The ring features a stunning 4-carat cushion-cut stone set in an eye-catching east-west orientation, all anchored in a bold, thick 18k yellow gold setting that gives it a modern-yet-timeless feel,” says Alexandra Samit, founder and CEO of Alexandra Beth Fine Jewelry.

How Much Did Miley Cyrus’s Engagement Ring Cost?

Blue Nile’s vice president of merchandising, Daniela Tarantino, told People that the ring could be valued as high as AU$685,000. She described the design as a “chunky gold east-west bezel-set ring,” noting that the bold, sculptural setting reflects one of the strongest trends currently shaping the bridal jewellery market.

Based on her assessment, Tarantino estimates the modified cushion-cut diamond to be approximately four to five carats, placing its value between AU$400,000 and AU$685000.

A slightly more conservative estimate comes from Reyne Hirsch, brand ambassador for Worthy and a former Antiques Roadshow appraiser. She places the ring’s retail value between AU$230,000 and AU$380,000. “It’s a stunning piece with a very modern, minimalist feel,” Hirsch told People.

“The four to five-carat cushion-cut diamond is bezel-set east to west, and depending on the stone’s colour and clarity, that valuation range feels appropriate.”

Who Designed Miley Cyrus’s Engagement Ring?

Miley Cyrus’s engagement ring was custom-designed by Los Angeles–based jewellery designer Jacquie Aiche, whose distinctive, bohemian-luxe aesthetic has long attracted celebrity clientele. One of the ring’s most striking features is its bold yellow-gold setting — a metal that continues to surge in popularity across modern bridal design.

“Miley Cyrus’ style has always been cutting edge, and her engagement ring is no exception,” says Jillian Sassone, founder of Marrow Fine.

“The band is bold, and it appears to be a bombe-style ring with an east-west diamond. Bombe rings are gold-forward with a rounded, dome-like silhouette — a modern interpretation of the classic solitaire.”

According to Sassone, the ring’s sculptural weight and secure setting speak directly to how contemporary brides are redefining engagement jewellery. “We’re seeing more clients gravitate toward chunkier designs with settings that feel substantial enough for everyday wear,” she explains. “It’s edgy, statement-making and perfectly aligned with Miley’s aesthetic.”

Miley Cyrus is engaged to her long-time partner and creative collaborator, Maxx Morando, marking a new chapter in a relationship that has largely unfolded away from spectacle.

The news was confirmed on December 2 after Cyrus stepped out at the Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere in Los Angeles wearing a diamond ring on her left hand. While the couple has yet to publicly share details of the proposal, multiple reports indicate the engagement is recent.

Cyrus and Morando were first linked in late 2021 after attending Gucci’s Love Parade show in Los Angeles. What initially felt like a fleeting fashion-world intersection soon revealed itself as something more enduring.

Weeks later, they were photographed together backstage at Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, and by April 2022, a kiss in West Hollywood placed their relationship firmly in the public eye.

Their beginning, however, was far more unassuming than their profiles suggest. The pair met on a blind date. “It was blind for me, not really for him,” Cyrus told British Vogue. “I thought, the worst that can happen is I leave.”

For the occasion, Cyrus stepped onto the red carpet in custom Gucci from Demna’s debut collection for the house, La Famiglia. The black strapless gown featured a sequin-embroidered, sweetheart bodice with a drop waist, flowing into layered black tulle that formed a soft train finished with a bow detail.

Who Is Maxx Morando?

Morando, 26, is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work with the indie rock band Liily, following a stint with the Regrettes from 2015 to 2018. His creative reach extends well beyond music.

He also works in fashion design and helped create one of Cyrus’ festival looks in 2021 alongside designer Shane Kastl, a collaboration Cyrus praised for its sustainable and reinventive spirit.

Their creative worlds soon began to overlap. Morando contributed to Endless Summer Vacation, the 2023 album that marked one of Cyrus’ most defining commercial and cultural chapters, working on “Violet Chemistry” and “Handstand.”

He later took on a larger role in her forthcoming ninth album, Something Beautiful, producing several tracks and co-writing the title song.

What Is Miley Cyrus And Maxx Morando’s Age Difference?

Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar in November 2024, Cyrus reflected on the subtle generational differences that shape her relationship with Morando, who is six years her junior.

“He looks at life really differently than I do,” she said, pointing to the digital divide that shaped their upbringings. Morando, she explained, grew up with a laptop at his fingertips, while her own childhood involved sharing a single desktop computer with her siblings.

Even their approaches to everyday life reflect this contrast. “Honestly, he’s raised our dog off Reddit,” she laughed. “I’m like, are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this?”

Despite these differences, Cyrus described their emotional alignment as remarkably natural. “He’s very similar to me,” she said. “We just don’t take life too seriously.”

Who Has Miley Cyrus Previously Dated?

For Miley’s long-time fans, her love life has unfolded in parallel with her public coming of age. We met her as a Disney ingénue on Hannah Montana, watched her fall into young, cinematic love in The Last Song, followed her through pop rebellion in the Bangerz era, and arrived with her at the self-possessed confidence of “Flowers.” As her identity evolved, so too did the shape of her relationships.

Her most defining romance was with Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, a decade-long, on-again, off-again love story that culminated in marriage in 2018 and separation less than a year later. The heartbreak became cultural shorthand, later reframed through the lens of reinvention with “Flowers” in 2023.

Between those chapters, Cyrus had a series of brief but headline-making romances with numerous stars including Kaitlynn Carter, Cody Simpson, Stella Maxwell and Nick Jonas.

Today, her relationship with musician Maxx Morando feels distinct in both its privacy and its steadiness.

In a reflective interview with The Cut in 2025, Cyrus spoke candidly about unlearning the patterns that once shaped her choices in love, and how time had reshaped her priorities.

“I ended up with a person who treats me really well and respects me,” she said. “My man’s hot, but my man also respects me.”

Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, returned to a Manhattan courtroom this week for a pretrial hearing. Once again, he arrived as both defendant and spectacle.

Outside, a cluster of fangirls reportedly waited for hours in freezing temperatures to catch a glimpse of him.

Inside, Mangione entered alongside his legal team in a grey suit and red chequered button-down, neatly groomed, freshly cut and, as netizens quickly noted, immaculately styled.

His courtroom looks have become part of the cultural discourse surrounding the case. In February, Mangione styled his bulletproof vest with dark green knit sweater, khaki trousers and brown loafers. Within 24 hours, searches for “Luigi Mangione outfits” spiked by 350 percent on Google, while interest in his loafers surged by 1,400 percent, according to WWD.

Yet the crowd waiting in the cold and the fashion chatter that ripples outward from each appearance represent only the most visible layer of a far larger and stranger support ecosystem that has grown around Mangione since his arrest last winter.

As his case has unfolded, he has become an unlikely avatar for an overlapping mix of internet stan culture, anti-corporate anger, criminal justice activism and obsessive parasocial devotion.

Supporters enter the courtroom. Image: Getty

From inside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, Mangione reportedly receives as many as 115 letters a day from more than 50 countries. Some supporters insist on his innocence. Others believe he is guilty but see the act as vigilante justice against the health insurance industry.

Still others support him regardless of the facts, framing him as a symbol of institutional corruption and state overreach. His image now circulates as meme, martyr, folk hero and political lightning rod, often all at once.

Each court appearance only intensifies the feedback loop. Protesters arrive with handmade signs and LED trucks displaying victims of alleged insurance denials. Activists distribute health care reform literature steps away from fans in “Free Luigi” merchandise. Online, thirst posts sit beside fundraising links for his legal defence and calls for death penalty abolition. The spectacle has become inseparable from the case itself.

With proceedings expected to continue throughout the week and a full trial slated for January, Mangione is likely to remain a fixture of both the legal system and the internet’s strangest cultural crossover, where true crime, protest politics and fashion commentary collide.

Trigger Warning: This article discusses alleged sexual assault and sex trafficking.

Throughout Sean ‘P Diddy‘ Combs’ career in the public eye as a rapper, record producer, and record executive starting in the 1990s, he’s had a slew of high-profile girlfriends.

Most notably, R&B singer Cassie Ventura, whose lawsuit against Combs opened up a pathway for other brave women to come forward and assist with the federal indictment case currently on trial.

Following the rap mogul’s arrest, charges and trial, there’s renewed focus on everyone in his orbit, including the artists he mentored, the women he dated and had children with. We take a look back at his past relationships, from the early nineties, until now.

How Many Kids Does Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs Have?

Sean ‘P Diddy’ combs has seven kids, ranging in age from 33 to one, including his first child – adopted son Quincy Taylor Brown.

Quincy Taylor Brown was three when his mother, Kim Porter, began dating Diddy, soon after which he was adopted.

Kim and Diddy went on to have four more children together, including Christian Combs, 26, Chance Combs, 18, and twins D’Lila and Jessie Combs, both 17.

Justin Combs, 30, was born in 1993 and is Diddy’s first child with stylist and fashion designer Misa Hylton.

In December 2022, Combs announced the arrival of his youngest child, daughter Love Sean Combs whom he shares with model Dana Tran.

How Many Times Has P Diddy Been Married?

Although Sean Diddy Combs has had many long-term girlfriends over the years, the embattled media mogul has never officially been married.

In a 2022 interview, Diddy was asked why he’d never been married despite being in several high profile relationships.

Revealing the reason why he never wanted to take the next step, he said: “Just wasn’t ready, just wasn’t ready,” Combs said, according to Revolt. ” … Just didn’t wanna … never had a desire to get married, you know what I’m saying?

“When I was growing up, my father got killed when I was young, when I was 2. And my mother, she just like, never wanted to have men around … it was something during that time, having men around your children. So, I never really saw a relationship like that, I was just raised around women. I never really had those aspirations.”

Diddy – then known as ‘Puff’ or ‘Puff Daddy’, started dating fashion designer Misa Hylton in the early nineties, after she began working with him as he rose through the ranks at Uptown Records.

In a 2023 interview with BET, Hylton spoke about working with Combs on the styling for music group, Jodeci, after which her own career really kicked off.

In December of 1993, the pair welcomed their first – and only – child, Justin, only to break up shortly after.

While the couple’s relationship was short-lived, they have seemingly maintained a close co-parenting arrangement, confirmed when Hylton was photographed at Diddy’s 50th Birthday party.

In 1994, not long after Combs and Hylton parted ways, he would begin his near decade-long on-again, off-again relationship with model, Kim Porter.

“The first time I saw her, she was at the studio with her ex-boyfriend,” Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs shared in an interview with Essence. The rapper was referring to Kim’s ex -boyfriend, singer AI B. Sure, the father of Kim’s child Quincy.

“She kind of made me nervous,” Combs continued“She wasn’t like a New York girl. She was Bohemian, mixed with Georgia-peach hospitality. I got the idea she’d like doing stuff like walking barefoot in the grass. I didn’t think I could get her to like me. She was smooth, you know, like ice. She’s cool and collected and thinks before she speaks. You meet a lot of young ladies, and they just don’t do that. Kim was never pressed; she was always in control.”

The tumultuous relationship was not without its flaws. After welcoming Christian “King” Combs, their first child together in 1998, the couple ended things just a year later in 1999, when Diddy began dating actress and singer, Jennifer Lopez.

After the breakdown of Lopez and Combs’ relationship, Kim and Diddy rekindled theirs, getting back together in 2003 and welcoming twin daughters D’Lila Star and Jessie James Combs in 2006.

The one-year-after-kids pattern seemed to rear its ugly head again, as the couple parted ways for the final time in 2007.

It was revealed later, that Kim had found out about Diddy fathering a child with friend, Sarah Chapman, the same year she gave birth to their twins.

The ex-partners remained on good terms right up until Porter tragically passed away in November 2018 at age 47.

The year was 1999 and J. Lo’s debut album On The ^6 produced by Combs, had just been released, earning Lopez her well-deserved A-list status.

But while they may have started work as colleagues, a professional Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs relationship soon turned romantic, with the pair announcing their partnership in 1999.

During this time, J. Lo’s star was rising at a rapid speed, with a global hit record and of course, that green Versace dress, catapulting her into the pop culture stratosphere. But that same year, the couple were involved in a disagreement at a Manhattan club in which shots were fired resulting in three people being injured.

While Combs and Lopez were both arrested after leading police on a chase through New York City before a stolen gun was found inside their car, charges against Lopez were quickly dropped.

Combs, however, was forced to stand trial for gun possession and alleged bribery, before being acquitted.

Despite the scandal, J. Lo and Combs stayed together until 2001.

Two years after the pair broke things off, Lopez spoke with Vibe magazine about Diddy’s infidelity. “It was the first time I was with someone who wasn’t faithful.” ”I never caught him, she continued, “but I just knew. … I had to think, ‘Do I want to be home with kids in 10 years wondering where somebody is at three in the morning?’”

Though neither Diddy or Cameron Diaz ever confirmed either way, the pair were surrounded by dating rumours briefly in 2008.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs & Cassie Relationship

R&B singer, whose real name is Cassandra Ventura, was first linked to Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in 2007 shortly after he and ex-girlfriend Kim Porter had split for the final time, but didn’t go public with their relationship until 2012.

However, Cassie was first introduced to Combs in 2005, when he began work producing the then-teenager’s first album.

According to a lawsuit filed against Combs in the Federal District Court in Manhattan, on Thursday 16 November, 2023, Cassie claimed that Combs began abusing her soon after that initial meeting in 2005, up until Cassie was able to finally end the relationship in 2018.

“After years in silence and darkness I am finally ready to tell my story, and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships,” Ventura said in a statement at the time of filing, per The New York Times.

While Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs denied the allegations filed against him in November 2023, the complaint obtained and shared by PEOPLE, stated that: “All aspects of Ms. Ventura’s life were controlled by either Mr. Combs or his management companies.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and ex-girlfriend Cassie reached a legal settlement before the case made its way to court, but her brave testimony set in motion the events we’re seeing play out today.

Sean Diddy Combs, 49, and then-22-year-old Lori Harvey sparked dating rumours in July 2019, after they were spotted by photographers walking together through New York City’s SoHo.

Shortly after their initial link, the pair were snapped holidaying with Lori’s mum and stepdad, Steve Harvey, in Nerano, Italy.

Since then, the named of any Sean Diddy Combs girlfriends have been nothing but murmurs, maintaining his single status.

Influencer Chiara Ferragni Could Go To Prison Over A Cake https://www.marieclaire.com.au/news/crime/chiara-ferragni-pandoro-cake-prison/ Tue, 02 Dec 2025 03:53:50 +0000 https://www.marieclaire.com.au/?p=1499396 A recipe for scandal

The post Influencer Chiara Ferragni Could Go To Prison Over A Cake appeared first on marie claire.

A Christmas cake may become the most expensive mistake of Chiara Ferragni’s career.

This week, Italy’s most recognisable influencer appeared in a Milan courtroom as prosecutors formally sought a 20-month prison sentence over an advertising scandal that has quietly become one of Europe’s most consequential legal tests of creator power.

The charges stem from a 2022 holiday collaboration with Italian confectioner Balocco.

The limited-edition co-branded pandoro cake, wrapped in Ferragni’s signature pink and promoted across her vast social platforms, was presented as a charitable initiative tied to donations for the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital in Turin.

What Is The Pandoro Cake Scandal?

Prosecutors allege that consumers were misled into believing that each purchase of the cake would directly generate hospital funding. In reality, authorities say Balocco had made a single €50,000 donation months prior to launch, with no mechanism linking individual sales to further giving.

What Ferragni later described as a “communication error” swiftly escalated into a national scandal. In December 2023, Italy’s competition authority ruled that the campaign constituted a misleading commercial practice.

Ferragni’s companies were fined more than €1 million, while Balocco received a smaller penalty. The deeper rupture, however, was reputational. On December 19, 2023, she posted an emotional video to Instagram, captioned in part:

“My mistake remains, but I want to make sure that something constructive and positive will come from this mistake.”

What Was The Fallout Of The Pandoro Cake Scandal?

The fallout was immediate. Ferragni lost followers, major brand partnerships were terminated, and her once-dominant presence across the European fashion circuit largely disappeared.

The controversy also prompted legislative change. It directly accelerated what has become known as the “Ferragni Law,” a reform designed to tighten oversight of influencer marketing, particularly when commercial promotions involve charitable claims. The shift signalled that influencers would now be regulated as formal commercial operators rather than treated as informal digital personalities.

The criminal investigation soon followed. Milan prosecutors opened a formal case into whether Ferragni and campaign executives had committed aggravated fraud. This week, they confirmed their request for a custodial sentence.

While first-time offenders in Italy often receive suspended sentences, the pursuit of prison time represents a significant escalation in how influencer misconduct is being treated under criminal law.

At the same time, Ferragni’s business empire began to unravel. At its peak, her companies were valued at €75 million.

She held licensing deals across fashion and beauty, operated a talent agency, and managed multiple media platforms. By 2024, revenue had fallen from €14 million to €2 million, with losses exceeding €10 million. Stores in Milan and Rome were closed, investment deals collapsed, and a restructuring specialist was appointed as CEO.

Is Chiara Ferragni Still With Fedez?

Her personal life also came under strain. In early 2024, Ferragni separated from her husband, rapper Fedez, after six years of marriage. The former couple share two children together.

In early 2025, Italian podcaster Fabrizio Corona, who has claimed close ties to Fedez, alleged on his show that Ferragni had been unfaithful during the marriage and that Fedez had harboured feelings for another woman throughout their relationship.

Ferragni responded publicly via a series of Instagram stories, firmly denying any infidelity. She stated that she had remained in the marriage despite being aware of at least one betrayal by Fedez, and alleged that he ultimately left her in an effort to distance himself from the fallout of her legal scandal.

Ferragni further claimed that in December 2024, Fedez contacted her and admitted to having maintained a long-term affair dating back to 2017, saying he had considered calling off their 2018 wedding shortly before it took place but did not know how to do so publicly.

Fedez later addressed the controversy in his own Instagram statements, saying he had married Ferragni “with conviction” but acknowledged making serious mistakes.

What Other Scandals Was Chiara Ferragni Involved In?

As the pandoro investigation continued, regulators expanded their review to include other charity-linked promotions. Scrutiny turned to Easter-themed collaborations involving Ferragni-branded chocolate eggs connected to children’s charities, which were later incorporated into the wider regulatory case.

By the end of 2024, Ferragni had paid more than €3 million to resolve multiple consumer and charity-related disputes tied to both the pandoro and Easter-egg campaigns. This included a €1 million fine from Italy’s competition authority, a €1 million payment to the Turin children’s hospital, and a €1.2 million settlement with a children’s autism organisation.

She also compensated pandoro customers through a consumer advocacy settlement and donated €200,000 to a women’s charity. That same year, her company pledged to no longer pursue commercial initiatives tied to charitable fundraising, and Ferragni parted ways with her longtime manager.

What Is Chiara Ferragni Doing Now?

In April 2025, she moved to regain control of her business, purchasing 99 per cent of her holding company through a reported personal investment exceeding €6 million.

Since then, Ferragni has made a careful return to public life. She has resumed select advertising partnerships, appeared on multiple magazine covers, and accepted limited fashion invitations in Milan and Paris. Over the summer, she confirmed a relationship with Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, heir to the family that controls Pirelli. Her social media presence now focuses primarily on commercial content and luxury travel.

Despite this, prosecutors argue that Ferragni’s digital reach significantly amplified the misleading nature of the Balocco campaign and that she benefited most from the promotion. Her former business manager and several manufacturing executives are co-defendants. A verdict is expected in the coming months, with proceedings projected to conclude in early 2026.
