However, as Coachella content rolled out over the weekend from the Indio Desert in California, it was evident that the beloved musical festival had a rebrand. Gone are the days of crochet knits, denim cutoffs, and tie-dye T-shirts as the festival ushers in a new era of understated style. Think simple sundresses, a great pair of jeans, and a leather jacket that could easily transition from desert to everyday wear.

This new era has been a long time coming. In 2014, the conversation around the cultural appropriation of festival fashion — kimonos, bindis as makeup, and Native American feather headdresses — came into the foreground, causing a seismic chic in the music festival dress code.

When Coachella returned in 2022, following a Covid hiatus, supermodels of the moment, Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, declared the former archetype of festival fashion officially dead. In her place, a cooler, more understated younger sister was born.

As weekend one kicked off on Friday, it was clear that celebrities were continuing to stand by the minimal dress code. Singer Lorde made a guest appearance during Charli XCX’s sunset set wearing jeans and a simple black T-shirt, while a star-studded crowd brought effortless fashion to the barricade.

Girl of the moment, Tate McRae opted for simple black shorts and an oversized leather bomber jacket, Kylie Jenner wore a plain white Tee and jeans with boyfriend Timothée Chalamet in tow, and Hailey Beiber sported the perfect LBD.

Wearing the right colours can give you a radiant glow, while the wrong colour palette has the exact opposite effect, making your skin look sallow and tired. And you don’t need a stylist to help you choose. Once you know the tricks of the trade, it’s easy to colour-analyse yourself. 

And, remember this is just a guideline. If you adore a colour that isn’t quite right for you, use it as an accent. (Think: shoes, belt, or handbag.) You do you!

How Do I Work Out My Skin Tone?

Cool, warm, or neutral are the colour tones that come through your skin from underneath the surface. And it’s not dependent on how light or dark your skin is.

Very fair to dark-skinned ladies can have cool, warm or neutral undertones. So working out your skin tone is a great place to start when it comes to finding the colours that suit you. Here are five different ways you can find your skin tone at home.

1. The White Paper Test

Start with a clean face that’s clear of makeup and creams. If you’ve just washed your face, wait at least 15 minutes for any redness to subside, then step into some natural light to properly examine your skin.

Grab a piece of pure white paper and hold it up to your face. How does your skin look in contrast? If you have a hue that leans towards a greenish, light brown or golden or yellow undertones, then you have a warm skin tone. Pink, rosy or blue? You’re as cool as a cucumber, baby! However, if your skin appears grey or ashen, it’s a neutral skin tone for you.

Acne, rosacea, or a tan can make it hard to determine your skin’s tone. It this is the case, ask a mate to do the paper test on the crease behind your ear instead. The delicate skin there is less likely to be affected.

2. The Vein Test

What colour are the veins in your hand and wrist? Blue or purple veins indicate cool skin, while a greenish hue, means warm skin. If you can’t decide between the two, you could have neutral-toned skin. Or, you may way to try another method to confirm your skin tone.

3. The Sun Test 

Another easy way to work out your skin’s undertone is to gauge how it reacts to the sun. Olive-skinned beauties who tan easily generally have warm skin tones. Gals with pale skin who burn in the sun, are usually cool. But that’s not to say that women with dark skin that doesn’t burn can’t have a cool skin tone. If you’re neutral, you may fall into either group.

4. The Jewellery Skin Tone Test 

Put on some different earrings, necklaces, rings or bracelets and see how the metal tones sit against your skin. Silver and platinum generally make cool skin tones pop, while for warm tones, gold is where it’s at.

5. Your Eye/Hair Colour 

It’s not an exact science, but eye colour and the hue of your hair can help to determine skin tone. People with warm skin tones tend to have amber or brown eyes with dark blonde to dark brown hair, while cool skin tones have grey, blue or green eyes and tresses that range from very dark (blue-black or very dark brown) to light blonde.

Interestingly, most people with neutral skin tones have hazel eyes, and hair that is is multiple colours like blonde with ashy streaks or brown with warm golden brown highlights.

Colour Palettes For Different Skin Tones

Once you know your skin tone, you can start finding colours that suit you, not only when it comes to clothes but also makeup and accessories.

What Colours Should I Wear If I’m Warm?

You’re looking for warm colours like oranges, golden yellow, honey gold, amber, and reds that will make your golden undertones sing. But you can also get away with warmer greens and blues, like deeper turquoise, green moss, olive, fern, pesto, and red-purples in magenta and orchid shades.

Neutrals like taupe, hot chocolate, cream whites, and latte will make your skin glow. Steer clear from icy shades and jewelled tones like amethyst, and sapphire.

What Colours Look Good On Me If I Have A Cool Skin Tone?

On the cool end of the colour chart, your best hues are bright blue, royal blue, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, deep purples, lavender, lilac snow. But don’t discount warm shades like shocking pink (not hot pink, which is warm), cerise, ruby, and bright rose.

Your neutral colours are grey, navy and pristine white, but avoid oranges and yellows!

What Colours Suit Me If I’m Neutral?

Wear jade green, dusty pink, lagoon blue and cornsilk yellow and you’ll make heads turn.

Neutral colours like off-whites, coffee, mid-range greys and black are also your best friend. Give colours that are too bright and vibrant a wide berth, though – they’ll overwhelm you.

Seasonal Colour Analysis

You can take it a step further, and try out seasonal colour analysis, which involves classifying yourself according to the seasons.

Once upon a time, seasonal colour analysis, or skin-tone matching, was broken down into four basic categories:

• Spring: Light hair and eyes, warm undertone
• Summer: Light hair and eyes, cool undertone
• Autumn: Dark hair and eyes, warm undertone
• Winter: Dark hair and eyes, cool undertone

But the narrow classification meant that many women weren’t accounted for. So, now we have 12 seasons to choose from:

• Light Spring
• True or Warm Spring
• Clear Spring
• Light Summer
• Cool or True Summer
• Soft Summer
• Soft Autumn
• True or Warm Autumn
• Deep Autumn
• True or Cool Winter
• Clear Winter

Colours Anyone Can Wear

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to adding colours that suit you to your wardrobe, consider looking for clothes in colours that suit most skin tones and colour palettes, including:

• Pure white
• Light blush pink
• Teal with a perfect mix of blue and green
• Eggplant purple
• Grey

You’ll find some of these colours will come in and out of fashion, but fortunately white and grey are usually always available. And if you wan to try bold colours, such as reds, yellows or a particular shade that’s trendy, you could always try something on to see how it looks. Take photos with and without a flash, then consider how the clothes and colour sits against your skin to decide if it suits you.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that what colours suit you might change or be up for debate – a fact Zooey Deschanel can attest to. The actress and singer posted a video of her getting colour analysis done earlier in 2024, where there was still debate in the comments (officially, she’s a True Winter).

Blake Lively’s Best Lily Bloom-Inspired Outfits

Lively stepped out in a very Lily Bloom-inspired sundress with floral prints, Christian Louboutin Carnaval satin sandals and wooden bangles on July 31st in New York City.

On the same day, Lively wore a Dauphinette Heaven Is a Place on Earth gown, which is reportedly inspired by the childhood diaries Lily Bloom reads in the film.

She paired the gown with some playful Christian Louboutin So Kate Rainbow heels and some dangly earrings.

Wearing a multi-coloured coat, red shoes and an glittery embroidered mini dress, Lively was strategically captured in front of an ‘interior foliage’ van.

Lively might have been at the afterparty for the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine but that didn’t stop her from dressing like Lily Bloom.

“Thank you to @balmain for the most incredible couture leather & patent dress covered in so I could still rep @itendswithusmovie bc I Lily always,” Lively wrote on Instagram.

Lively donned a gorgeous floral embroidered Balmain dress for a Book Bonzana event with This Ends With Us author, Colleen Hoover.

Lively wasn’t the only one embracing method dressing with her cool floral ripped jeans, her co-star, Brandon Sklenar was also spotted with some floral embroidery on his jeans.

For Chanel’s Tribeca Festival Artists Dinner, Lively chose to wear a two-piece Chanel suit from the brand’s 2024 collection.

While she doesn’t officially say its a nod to her It Ends With Us character, it would be a very coincidental choice.

In my wardrobe, I’m really happy to go to work in a great pair of jeans and a great jacket. It may look a little bit boring and repetitive to people but I don’t care because I like it, and it suits me and I feel dressed and confident.  

Your wardrobe becomes quite minimal when you get older, which is really great because I’ve got kids and getting ready in the morning, I don’t want to have to think about it and I don’t want to have to iron anything. I’d rather spend an extra half an hour reading my book rather than workshopping outfits. 

When you’re in your fifties, you want hard-working pieces, good tailoring, and a couple of good dresses. The basis of my wardrobe is a great jean, a skirt, and some staple shirts and sweaters, and then I add to it with accessories.  

I love anything that I can wear on high-rotation: I love to give my things a long life, and I really treasure them. I get all the trends out of my system when I’m styling shoots for the magazine: we just had the Prada pink bow dress and it was so great to put it on the model, but then I was done.  

My advice would be to not spend a lot on sweaters, but invest in jackets and tailoring. It does take a bit of work to find the right thing, you’ve got to try on a lot of pieces, and think about whether it’s going to work with what you’ve got and the right proportions for your body, but you will find it. 

Look One

The blazer

I opt for a great tailored jacket that’s big but not too oversized, because I have broad shoulders. Something that’s lightweight because of our weather – you can put a thin sweater underneath. The Toteme jacket goes from summer to winter, I’ve been wearing it for years – it’s possibly the best thing I’ve ever bought in my life.

It’s the perfect fabric and oversized but not too oversized. Toteme has some really good pieces for building a good wardrobe because they focus on classics.

The jeans

I have multiple pairs of jeans on high rotation. These Bottega Venetas are my favourite because they’re super long and they give me a chic polish for work. They’re medium-rise, so I’ll put on a belt and throw on a sweater half-tucked in.  

I love a faded jean, but I don’t feel like the slouchy style really works on me, and I’ve never been a ripped-jean girl. I also don’t usually embrace a high waist because my legs are long, so the proportion isn’t right.  

I’m also coveting the new Gucci jeans – they could be on high-rotation in my wardrobe in summer because they’re a nice light denim.

This Miu Miu shirt I love – it’s a cropped khaki shirt, which I wouldn’t wear without a jacket but it gives you that great silhouette and it stops you from having to tuck into your waist. It’s practical.

The mini-skirt

I’ll do a bare leg, but the shoe has to be super polished. This is my little Prada mini skirt – it’s a re-nylon skirt, it’s so simple and well-made.

I like a short skirt with a jacket or a three-quarter navy coat because it makes it grown-up.

The sweater

You can buy good, simple sweaters from Uniqlo or COS – I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on a sweater. Save that for jackets and tailoring.

Those are Saint Laurent slingbacks, and they’re very ongoing – the heel’s not too high, it’s that classic shape that you can wear for years.

This is the same Prada mini skirt and same Toteme blazer, but I updated the shoe for these little Row suede flats – I love them because they’re so comfortable, which is great for walking around Fashion Week.

When it comes to fashion, brands are also exploring western inspirations in their new collections.

One brand to do justice to the trend is Levi’s, who explore western influence in their 24 Autumn/Winter collection.

“The roots of our brand are deeply embedded in the Old West,” Levi’s Global VP of Women’s Design, Jill Guenza tells marie claire Australia.

“We have a style in the men’s H1’24 collection called the 517 Bootcut Jean with a rich history dating back to the 1960s. This cut was specifically designed to be ‘full from the knee for the boot,’ a significant style deviation from the norm (and a practical consideration for many including cowboys who needed a wider bell-shaped fit to fall over their boots).

“You’ll also see subtle Western-design influences in our new Ribcage Bell jeans, which offer a nod to the original Levi’s jeans cut for cowboy boots while feeling ultra modern in fit and finish.”

What Defines Western Clothing?

According to Jill, “western denim has its roots in clothing built for utility on the frontier.”

“Flourishes and flair have been added over time, incorporating influences from a variety of cultures, the rodeo, and Western films and music,” Jill explains.

“We’ve dubbed the references in our collection “quiet western”, meaning modern and sophisticated in execution but with a definite nod to the original utilitarian roots.”

However, there’s a distinction between a full-blown traditional western get-up and the way celebrities are wearing the trend today.

 “Classic western dress included clean raw denim head to toe for dressed up moments and jeans perfectly worn and dusted from work on the range. 

“Western denim hallmarks can be seen in subtle details like stitch treatments, flared leg shapes in jeans, deconstruction, patching and contrasting denim fabrics. The women’s Iconic Western shirt has been a long-term staple in our range, slightly fitted with just the right amount of ease, and the new Teodora Shirt offers a relaxed take on the classic style.

“Our denim collection includes both ends of the spectrum, from clean rinses in truckers and jeans to tinted and faded finishes that evoke life on the frontier. As a brand with a history deeply tied to Western wear, we love seeing this trend continuing to evolve and become more inclusive.”

How Can I Wear The Western Trend This Season?

According to Jill, denim is one of the best ways to embrace the trend.

“Denim is having a huge moment, but not just in jeans. Denim on denim continues to gain momentum with proportions and styles evolving way beyond just the classic trucker jacket and 501s.  Traditional silhouettes like trenches, pencil skirts, and trousers are modernized in denim while fashion pieces like blouses and flowy dresses get an unexpected refresh in lightweight denim and tencel blends. 

When it comes to pieces from Levi’s own collection, Jill suggests starting with a pair of classic flares.

“The Ribcage Straight is one of our most iconic styles, and we’ve taken our highest rise yet which has become a waist-defining, leg-lengthening obsession, to develop the new season Ribcage Bells. This fit includes an ultra-flattering, vintage-inspired bell leg silhouette.”

“It’s a mix of ’70s-inspired flare and our Western heritage, and we think it’s going to be one of our most iconic styles yet.”

Jill also recommends people give chambray another chance.

“Chambray is an incredibly versatile fabric – soft and lightweight with the same beautiful look of indigo dye you see in denim.  Historically, chambray has been used in workwear shirts, thanks to its durability.  We love using chambray in our feminine styles, combining it with ruffles or eyelets for that compelling contrast of pretty and tough elements.”

Last night, a host of Australian women gathered in Max Mara’s Sydney store to celebrate the Italian fashion house’s meaningful collection, and hear exclusive styling advice from the marie claire Australia fashion and editorial team.

This collection is an ode to the Women’s Land Army, colloquially known as the ‘land girls’, who nourished the British nation through wartime crisis during World War Two. They came from different backgrounds and social classes, but they banded together in a show of unity and feminine strength to achieve something great.

The Sydney store was transformed similarly to the original runway, using natural grasses and ferns to infuse the space with the flora the land girls became known for.

Guests were welcomed by Are Media’s General Manager for Fashion & Beauty, Nicky Bridger, who spoke about how dear this new line is to her. A fashion show followed, styled by marie claire’s fashion director Naomi Smith, featuring a series of looks that faithfully delivered the strength and femininity of the original runway, but interpreted for the Australian woman.

The looks embodied both utility and glamour, utilizing belts as a device to cinch the waist and enhance an hourglass silhouette. Smith chose to style the looks alongside heels, which she explained are a great stylistic tool to elongate the leg and add a little ‘strut’ and confidence to our body language.

The display echoed the original runway, with bright colours opening the show like a flower in bloom, filtering toward Max Mara’s signature neutral tones and camel.

The curated looks were followed by a panel discussion between marie claire editor Georgie Abay, fashion director Naomi Smith and model Victoria Lee, who shared their style advice.

“I make a very conscious decision to pick pieces that will last me season after season, year after year,” Lee explained when speaking about the SS24 line.

“I love the stories and the memories that you can create in these pieces. I think Max Mara is an amazing example of that because the pieces that were their first designs are still hanging on these racks.”

Guests then had the opportunity to wander around the store, interact with the Max Mara team and styling staff who could help them craft the perfect ‘land girl’ look to cherish for a lifetime.

Sipping on champagne and Aperol spritz, and snacking on caviar and macarons, the evening was filled with intriguing conversations, interesting people, and a whole lot of truly exquisite fashion.

As Lee says, “Confidence comes from within, and when you find pieces that you feel amazing in and you feel the best version of yourself…Fashion is a wonderful tool for self-expression, self-exploration, creativity and through that we discover ourselves.

“That’s why I love fashion so much, it’s a constant exploration and evolving of ‘you’.”
